It had been a week since Cyanide had taken Poly to meet Serene Madness. Whenever they went on missions together, they visited Serene. Usually, when they caught up with her, she was at the store. Two weeks before Poly's training was to end, they met her at the gas station. She was busy stocking shelves with various odds and ends. She turned and smiled when they walked in, but Poly noticed it didn't reach her eyes. She quirked an eyebrow, but kept walking.
Poly wasn't the only one who noticed and Serene knew she was caught. "I can't keep anything from you guys can I?" she asked, standing with her fists on her hips.
"What's wrong?" Poly asked, concerned.
"Nothing."
"No," Cy said sternly. "It's not nothing. It's definitely something."
"I'm just having one of those days." Cy nodded knowingly, but Poly still needed an explanation. "I was never diagnosed, but I always suspected I had depression in some form. It's much better than it used to be, but I still get days when I just want to sink in a hole and not come back. Also, one tiny little thing could go wrong and it'll throw my entire day off kilter. I've gone into rages simply because someone drank one cup of my favorite tea." Poly nodded. She understood the feeling. In all honesty she suspected everyone was like that.
Serene stood with her left hand on her hip, her right arm supporting her weight on the nearest shelf. "So, what's up?"
Cy smiled. "We just came to say hi and to feed Neon."
"Ah. Use me and abuse me then go about your merry way," Serene said with a smile. Poly and Cy both laughed and nodded. That seemed to be a pattern with the three killjoys. They'd visit each other long enough to get what they needed, then leave with the promise to visit again. "Alrighty, then."
The three girls headed out to the gas pumps and continued talking as they filled up the red mustang. A few minutes after the car was filled, the girls were still talking and laughing. Serene caught a flash of something from the corner of her eye and shushed the other two girls. She grabbed a knife from one of her hidden sheaths and stalked around the gas station.
"What's going on?" Poly whispered.
"I don't know," Cy shrugged. "But Serene must've seen or heard something we didn't otherwise she would've said something."
Serene reappeared moments later, violently shoving a Drac in front of her to the gas pump. She pinned him by the throat with her left arm and held a knife to his face with her right. "Where are the others?!" she demanded. "Tell me or this takes out your eye!"
When the Drac spoke, his voice was filled with hatred. "They're right behind me."
A raygun blast hit the pump, just missing Serene's head. Poly and Cy looked behind them in shock. Serene moved her eyes ahead. On either side of them, five units of Dracs made their way to the diner. "Twenty," Poly gasped. "How did they get here without us knowing?"
"You're going to die," the Drac laughed. "You're going to die here."
Serene's face contorted in rage. Poly would've thought it comical if not for the murderous intent in her eyes. She finally understood what Cy had been talking about when she said Mad over-felt things. If Poly was to draw Mad's face at that moment she would've chosen a style similar to Elmer Fudd when he had just been outclassed by Bugs Bunny.
The Dracs descended on the gas station, quickly surrounding it. Before Poly could blink, Serene's right arm shot out toward the closest group and the Drac in front fell. Mad's throwing knife had embedded itself into his skull, just above his left eye. Cy and Poly opened fire on the Dracs as Serene dragged the one she'd trapped into the gas station. She chained the Drac to the back of the counter and walked back outside.
Together the three women shot, stabbed, and beat their way through the wave of Dracs. When the last Drac fell, Serene took command of the situation. "We need to get out of here." She turned and looked back at the gas station with sadness in her eyes. The sadness was replaced with anger just as quickly as it had come. "First, I wanna question that Drac." She stormed into the gas station, Cy and Poly following behind her. When she reached the Drac, she knelt down and put her hand at his throat. "Why are you here?"
The Drac said nothing. He stared blankly out from behind his mask. Serene stalked out of the gas station and began pulling her knives from the corpses outside. When she returned her eyes were a deep cerulean color. She knelt in front of the Drac and brandished a knife in his face.
"What are you doing?" Poly asked.
Serene ignored her. She removed her mask, then the Drac's. The man was younger than Serene, but older than Poly and Cy. He had blonde hair and brown eyes. He looked like he could've played football in school.
The man and Serene stared at each other. "Why are you here?" Serene demanded. When the man didn't answer, she took the knife in her hand and stabbed the man in the left thigh.
"What are you doing?!" Poly screamed, lunging toward Serene. Cy held her back, but she was having difficulty.
"I'm getting the information we need."
"You can't do that!"
Mad shot to her feet and rounded on Poly. "These… things are trying to kill us! We need to know why! I'm gonna use whatever method I need to get any information he has." Serene turned back to her prisoner.
"But you can't torture another human being!"
Cy looked from Poly to Serene with wide eyes. She'd always trusted Mad's judgment- especially when it came to situations like this- but part of her also agreed with Poly, though for different reasons. Poly still thought of Dracs as people. She obviously didn't want anyone to get hurt, but that way of thinking could get you killed out in the zones.
Cy, however, didn't like seeing Mad this way. The Mad she knew was kind, caring, and fun. This Mad was cruel and cold. She hated watching Serene interrogate Dracs, but she never tried to stop her.
Mad rounded on Poly once more. "Human beings?" Her voice was deadly calm. "Is that what you think these things are? Human beings?" She chuckled darkly and pointed at their prisoner. "Look at him. I stabbed him in the leg. A human being would be writhing in pain or screaming. Look. He's just sitting there. He's so drugged, he can barely feel anything." She grabbed Poly by the arm and forced her to kneel next to her. She pointed at the man's face. A single tear hung at the corner of his eye. "See that?" Poly nodded. "The nerve endings still work. The medications act like a block in the brain. When you were shooting those Dracs and they didn't even flinch, that was the medication blocking the signals to the pain receptors in the brain. Thing is, any block you put in the brain can be punched through with the right amount of stimulation."
Poly's eyes narrowed. "What do you mean?"
Cy knelt down beside them. "If you overload the nerve endings and create enough signals, they'll overwhelm the medication and punch through the barrier."
"So, what you're saying is that you have to use him as a pincushion?"
Serene looked Poly in the eyes. "Look, I was like you once. In the early years, I didn't want to hurt or kill anyone. But the more I observed, the less I cared about them. Yes, they're human beings, but right now, they're just a shell." She pointed to the man in front of them. "The medication has taken away everything that made him human. When we finally get the information we need from him, he'll still want to kill us, because that's what BLI has reprogrammed him to do."
"The medications never did that to us," Poly thought out loud.
"Because you were a citizen, not a soldier," Cy said softly. "Dracs get higher doses to override their humanity."
"So, why isn't Korse medicated?"
"Because Korse is a sadistic fuck," Mad ground out bitterly between clenched teeth. "He doesn't need the medication. He enjoys the cat and mouse game we've been playing all these years. He loves the hunt and he loves to hurt us." Serene turned her back on the other two killjoys. She focused on the man she'd taken hostage. If she didn't get the information she needed soon, he may bleed out before she got anything.
She brandished another knife in his face. He blinked. "You gonna answer my question?" He blinked again. "Looks like you still need a little help." With all the force she could muster, Serene rammed the knife into his other leg. Poly jerked back in surprise as the man physically jumped. "Can you answer me now?" Serene's voice had calmed slightly. The man didn't speak, but his eyes were squinting shut. "I'm sorry," she whispered before driving a third knife into his arm.
A muffled cry escaped the man's closed mouth. He squinted his eyes shut and rode out the pain. He hadn't felt pain in years. He'd only felt numb, detached for so long. It wasn't what they promised. They promised a life without pain. A life without sorrow and fear. What they gave him was a life of nothing. No feeling, no emotion at all. Where was the happiness? Where was the love? He didn't feel any of that. He just felt… empty.
The woman with the knife was speaking to him. He knew how this was going to end. He needed to hold on to this moment of clarity before it was taken over by the drugs again. He looked the woman in the eyes and waited for her to speak again.
"Can you speak now?"
"Yes." His voice shook with the pain but he was otherwise steady. He was resolute in his decision.
"What is Korse planning?" Serene's eyes had changed. They were no longer the deep cerulean they had been when she started her interrogation. They looked the color of a warm spring sky before a cooling rain.
The young man shook his head. "I only know what my unit was told."
"And what was that?"
"We were told to storm this gas station. We were told the resistance was planning an assault on a secret facility not far from here and that this was the headquarters."
"What secret facility?" Poly asked.
The man shook his head, eyes downcast. "I don't know."
"There isn't one. This is Zone 6. BLI doesn't have enough influence out here to successfully run a secret facility. Besides, we own this part of the desert. Nothing goes on around here without us knowing about it. We know everything that happens within 50 miles of this station. What were you supposed to do once you killed us?"
"Scorch it."
"What?!" Poly shouted. "Why?"
"This is a killjoy friendly gas station. Every killjoy in this part of the zone gets their gas and supplies from this gas station. If they torch it, we have no way to keep our cars fueled and running." Serene shook her head. "Korse is smart. He's probably figured out the location of all or most of our stations. He's probably sending Dracs to torch every one." She turned to Cy. "Radio Dr. D and tell him." Cy nodded and hurried to the car.
The man grabbed Serene's arm. "You know what you have to do." His eyes were wide and fearful. "I can feel it. I'm clouding over. Do it now before I try to kill you. Then run. There are other stations you can defend." He pointed to his left front pocket. "There's a map in there. It has the locations and dates of the targets my unit was supposed to hit. You can still defend them." He grunted from the pain. "Do it. Now."
Serene sighed heavily and brought out her raygun. It was emerald green with yellow stars, red hearts, and blue music notes. She pointed it to the right side of his head and closed her eyes. She silently flipped the switch to kill. "I'm sorry," she whispered as she fired.
When Serene stood she noticed Poly standing there. "What?" she snapped.
"Did you have to kill him?" She spoke no louder than a soft whisper. She didn't understand why he had to die.
"You heard him," Serene sniffed. Years of interrogations and she still had trouble with the final part. "The medication was kicking back in. He knew it. If I hadn't killed him, he would've tried to kill us. He would've slipped back into that black empty world where he only hears Korse's twisted little lies beating around his subconscious. That is not a place you want to be. Trust me, what I did was merciful. And before you ask, no, he wouldn't make it to be turned into a killjoy. The medications BL/Ind gives those guys doesn't just numb them to pain and suffering. It steals a piece of them away. The doses they give those guys and the time they're on those medications is like putting their mind and their soul through a meat grinder. Even still, the wounds I caused him when I was trying to get him coherent enough to talk were bleeding enough to kill him eventually anyway."
Poly didn't agree with it, but she let it go. Serene took one final look at the body before them and turned to Poly. "Did you ever look at Cy's wounds?"
"What?"
"When Cy was injured, did you get to look at her wounds?"
Poly's face twisted in disgust. "No! I was too busy trying to keep her alive, I didn't stop to study her like some animal!"
"Come here." Mad left no room for discussion. She grabbed Poly's arm and forced her to kneel next to her again. "Look at this," she pointed to the man's head. Poly tried to move, but Serene held her still. "Look. This is stuff you need to know."
"Cy already told me raygun blasts cauterize as they pass through."
"Yeah, well knowing that and seeing the effects are two totally different critters. Now look." Poly turned reluctant eyes toward where Serene was pointing. She could see the hole Serene's gun blast had made. It blasted a hole straight through the man's head. The skin was cauterized. "Smell that?"
"What?" Poly asked.
"Smell the air around the wound."
Poly sniffed and wrinkled her nose. "It's burnt."
"As should be expected from a raygun. And inside, completely cauterized. No blood. No mess. The perfect killing weapon." She chuckled darkly. "Leave it to BL/Ind to invent a clean weapon." She shook the thoughts from her mind and focused on teaching Poly. "Look what happens when the gun is set to stun." She flipped the little switch on the back of the gun and shot the dead man in the leg. "See the difference?" The blood-covered pants were further marred by a circular black mark. The blast from the raygun didn't puncture the skin. "Now look." Serene cut away the cloth where the raygun had burned. The skin was burned as well. The barrel of the gun left a perfect imprint in the dead man's skin with a solid black center. "When the switch is set to kill, the electric charge is high enough it becomes a solid laser and acts the same as a bullet. However, when the switch is set to stun, it acts just like a taser gun."
"How long is a person stunned for?"
"That depends a lot on the person. You have to take in several factors if you were to actually figure it out. Weight, height, and overall body mass are huge factors. I'd be unconscious longer than say Jet or Rad. You would be out about as long. Also, medication plays a small role. Not as much as mass, but it does play a role. A Drac won't be out as long as a refugee and a refugee won't be out as long as a killjoy."
Poly quirked her head. "The medications block the effects of the stun?"
"Yes," Mad nodded. "Also, where you shoot them is a big one. I'm gonna be out a lot longer if you shoot me in the head than I would be if you shoot me in the leg. Make sense?"
"Yeah. I think so."
"Alright. Now we've gotta get moving. Let's gather as many supplies as we can and take 'em back with us." Serene and Poly grabbed two big duffle bags from under the counter and started emptying shelves. They left the superficial items- lip gloss, knick knacks, toys- and only took the important items- food, water, maps.
When the duffle bags were fully loaded, the two girls threw them in the back of Neon Nights. Cy sat in the driver's seat, Poly in the passenger's seat and Serene in the back. As Cy sped off, Serene took one last look at the gas station, tears threatening to spill. When she faced the road ahead, her eyes were cold and filled with rage. No Drac would survive this fight.
***
The Drac's map contained the date and time of the attacks on the killjoy friendly gas stations. Listed with them was the number of units sent to each station and their attack formation. It proved to be a very useful tool. However, the map only showed the stations the dead unit was to attack. Several more stations were attacked that weren't on that map. The killjoys managed to save a third of them before the Dracs could burn them down.
Of the remaining gas stations on the map, ten were lost, three were saved, and five had yet to be hit. Dr. D took preemptive measures to ensure as many of those five could be saved as possible. With her station torched, Serene demanded that she be sent to one of the last stations to help defend it. Show Pony's scouting missions became more frequent and more dangerous. Even Poly and Cy were sent on scouting missions.
Three of the last five attacks occurred on schedule. There was no change in Korse's plan. The killjoys defended them easily. Party, Ghoul, Jet, Kobra, Lost, Poly, Cy, and Serene met with Dr. D and Show Pony at the secondary headquarters. The ten had decided that meeting in the diner might be too risky until the attacks stopped.
Dr. D opened the map and they began discussing the last three successes. Party Poison and Fun Ghoul detailed the preparations that had been taken and how quickly the Dracs were eliminated. Dr. D continued to stare at the map, lips pursed and eyes squinted in concentration.
"What's the matter, Dr. D?" Jet questioned.
"It feels like Korse is up to something." Dr. D scanned the map. "The last two just don't feel right."
"Well, we defended the last three pretty easily," Poly suggested, "maybe Korse doesn't know we have the map."
Serene shook her head. "He knows. A unit goes missing and we start fortifying our gas stations? He knows. He's got something planned."
Party Poison looked between Serene and Dr. Death. "Okay, so what do we do?"
"We anticipate," Dr. D stated.
Poly looked at him with wide eyes. "Anticipate what? We don't know anything to anticipate with."
"We anticipate everything." Serene's stare was cold. "We anticipate as many possibilities as we can think of and defend against them all."
The ten killjoys set about making plans. For hours they discussed the layout of the gas stations and the best fortifications. They decided it was best to increase not only the fortifications, but the number of killjoys defending both stations. Dr. D sent Party, Kobra, Jet, and Ghoul to oversee the defense of one station. Lost, Cyanide, Polyphonic, and Serene he sent to the other. Show Pony served as the scout for Party's group and Dr. D asked Panicked Joy and Warped Revenge to act as scouts for Serene's group.
Two days before the scheduled attack, just before dawn, the two groups of killjoys sat in their respective stations as they ate. "Ew. Beans again." Poly turned her nose up at the smell.
"Get used to it," Mad chuckled. "It's all we've got. "
"Son of a-"
The radio crackled. "Shh!" Lost glared at Poly. He leaned in closer to the radio. Mad and Cy exchanged worried glances. When the crackling ceased and no other sound emanated from the radio, Lost straightened up and glared at Poly. "You need to stop running your mouth so much. What if that had been the other team? What if they'd needed backup?"
Poly scrambled for an apology. "I-I'm sorry."
"Chill out, Lost," Serene growled. "If you're gonna jump down her throat about it, you've gotta jump down ours too. We've all been talking." When Lost huffed, she continued, "We've been talking all night, keeping each other awake. Besides, the only thing that's come across the radio is static. No harm done."
Poly sat with her shoulders hunched in defeat. "I'm sorry," she whispered.
"Don't apologize." Serene glared at Lost. "You had no reason to go off like that. Waiting for a fight aggravates me just as much as it does you, but that's no reason to get pissy."
Lost glared at Serene, but didn't say anything. A heavy silence settled in the room. The four killjoys remained by the radio as the rest slept in the back of the station. Cy sat by the window and kept watch over the outside.
Staring out into the dark, Cy exhaled softly. "I miss summer vacation."
Poly stared at the floor. "Yeah. That was my favorite thing before the bombs." She chuckled. "My brothers and I used to eat ice cream on my balcony and throw globs of it at Granddad on the pool deck below."
"I bet he didn't like that," Lost grumbled.
"Actually, he loved it. We used to try to sneak past him to go walking along the beach a couple hours later and he'd pick us up and throw us each in the pool."
Cy stared at her in awe. "Every day?" Poly nodded. "That sounds like an amazing way to spend your summers!"
"Yeah." Poly stared forlornly at her hands. "Yeah."
Silence descended on the killjoys once more. It was several minutes before anyone spoke again.
"I miss ramen." Three pairs of eyes stared at Serene in shock. "What?"
Lost gawked at the older killjoy. "Of all the things you could possibly miss, you chose ramen?"
"Well, it's not the only thing I miss! It's just what I miss the most at the moment."
"Ramen." Poly repeated.
"Hey, ramen was a slacker's best friend! You only needed to wait for the water to boil and your food was done in three minutes! And like the perfect food, it was ideal for hectic people too! It even came in little cups!"
"Okay, Mad," Cy laughed, holding Serene's shoulders still. "Chill."
Serene blushed a deep scarlet. "Oops." Poly yawned, making a small sound in the back of her throat similar to that of the old pop caps on glass drinking bottles. "I think you need to get some sleep," Serene laughed.
"Um, I think that's gonna have to wait."
Mad looked toward the window in alarm. "Why? What's wrong?"
Cy turned frightened eyes back to her old friend. "Joy's comin' back. She's being followed."
"She gave the signal?"
"Two flashes."
"Lost, wake everyone up. Poly, get the radio together. You're in charge of calling for backup if we need it."
"What if I get shot?"
"Lost is gonna make sure that doesn't happen. Right?" Mad pointed a glare in Lost Star's direction.
Lost turned around and headed for the back of the station. "Whatever."
As Lost disappeared into the back, Panicked Joy burst through the door. "Six cars and more on the way," she pushed through heavy breaths.
Serene sprang into action. "Poly, radio Party and tell them code: orange." She rushed to the door and bolted it shut, bracing it with a stack of shelves. She fired a shot at the glass through a hole in the back of the shelf to create a firing hole. "Lost, get everyone up! We need them now!" she shouted toward the back of the station.
"There are more coming from the back!" Warped Revenge shouted.
"Why didn't you tell us sooner?!"
Lost burst in from the back and shouted, "Because he fell asleep at his post!" He slammed his fortifications in place, ignoring the shouts and groans emanating from the waking killjoys. "Static fell asleep and Warped didn't bother to tell us! Instead he just waited until the last minute and fell asleep too! We're lucky we're not all dead already!"
"Static! Get your ass out here!"
Static Rage was fifteen years old with sea green eyes and long black hair. Normally, he kept it pulled back in a simple ponytail, but tonight, it was braided. "Yeah?" he mumbled.
"Why didn't you tell us you were sleepy?!" Serene yelled.
Cy saw the young boy's eyes widen and fill with fear. "Mad, we don't have time for this!"
"I'm sorry! I was talking to him and before I knew it I was out! I'm sorry, Mad! It won't happen again!"
Serene didn't say anything. She just turned her back on the boy and concentrated on the fight coming. "Everyone at their stations!" she shouted. Static took his place by Serene, Cy stuck close to Joy and Lost kept watch over Poly and the radio. Warped Revenge took the front center sniper's position on the roof along with five killjoys Dr. D picked himself. Radiant Psychosis was put in charge of the six killjoys in the back. Each killjoy had a spare gun and spare batteries, plus the backup weapons they carried with them.
With the new moon, the night was pitch black. As the first sniper took his first shot, he aimed for the white uniforms. He missed the heart, but his second shot was more successful. The Drac fell under the trampling feet of his comrades.
Dracs swarmed the front and back as raygun shots flew. Reds, Blues, Greens, and Yellows blasted from the killjoys as whites exploded from the Dracs weapons. "We can't hold them all off!" Cy shouted.
Mad fired with furious intent. "Poly! Get on the radio and tell Party code: red!"
Poly slumped against the fortifications and brought the radio mic to her lips. "Party Poison! Code: Red! I repeat! Code: Red!"
The radio crackled with static. "Th-… -n Ghoul. Can't- … -backup. We are-… red. Hol-" The radio went silent.
Hey guys. It's not mandatory, but reviews would help me greatly. I'm using this as practice for my other stories and I really need feedback. So, please, tell me what you think. Is it progressing okay? Am I moving too slow, too fast? Is my story line believable? Are my characters well thought out? Even just a vote or two would be most helpful. I really need to know because this is an effort to improve my writing as a whole. So, please, if you have time, or if you feel like it, could you let me know what you think of this? Thanks, Lucidia89 (Serene Madness)
