Several weeks later after more wildly successful dates with Louisa Josh got in his car and made his way to the Upper West Side of Manhattan for a scheduled access visit with his sons. He parked in the street outside Lisa’s apartment block then made his way inside greeting Tony the doorman with a curt nod as he went. Things had been going swimmingly with Louisa in the two months he had been dating her and he had started to think after their last date now was the time to introduce her to Josef.

Josh reached the fourth floor where Lisa’s apartment was and knocked on the door apprehensively. Almost instantly it opened and Lisa stood there a look of pure loathing on her face.

‘Come in’ she said curtly.

‘Lisa can we at least try and be civil to each other?’ Josh asked tiredly closing the door behind him ‘the snappy greetings are getting a bit wearing’

‘And what’s the point?’ Lisa snapped ‘just collect the boys and piss off’

‘Hey what’s with the attitude?’ Josh asked as they walked through to the kitchen.

‘None of your fucking business!’

‘Hey not in front of Josef!’ Josh hissed spying his son watching a Wiggles program on the television.

‘Fuck you Josh!’

Josh felt his temper flare.
‘No fuck you’ he hissed ‘Jesus Lisa ‘it’s been five months now why the hell are you so hostile? I’ve well and truly moved on it’s time you did’

‘Oh yeah I know you’ve moved on’ Lisa said acidly turning around her arms crossed across her chest ‘I know you’re with some whore young enough to be your daughter’

‘Hey do not use that word and Louisa is not a whore!’ Josh shot back.

‘Oh Louisa is that her name?’ Lisa spat.

‘And she is not young enough to be my daughter!’ Josh snapped an edge to his voice ‘not that it would be any of your damn business if she was! You’re not longer my partner Lisa you’ve got one of your own remember? Who I choose to share my life with should be none of your fucking business!’

‘I don’t want her around my sons!’ Lisa stormed.

‘She hasn’t met them yet’ Josh said tiredly ‘I wanted to make sure things were serious before I did that! The most important things in the world to me are our son Lisa and you know I would do nothing to harm them or surround them with anything or anyone that would harm them! And you know fuck all about Louisa at least be fair and find out more about her before you pass judgement’

‘Fuck that!’

‘Come on Lisa at least pretend to be reasonable’ Josh said leaning against the kitchen bench ‘Louisa is very important to me and so are the boys I want them to meet. I know you’ve introduced them to your new partner and I think it’s only fair you let me do the same to mine’

Lisa stared at him in stony silence her arms still crossed tightly across her chest

‘I don’t know anything about her!’ she said stiffly after a moment.

‘And I don’t know anything about your partner either!’ Josh exclaimed ‘but even after you ended things I still trust your judgement. Don’t be so poisonous and trust mine!’

‘I don’t know why the hell I should’

Josh sighed and ran his fingers through his hair.
‘Don’t make me fight you on this Lisa’ he said wearily ‘I don’t want to get lawyers involved’

‘I’d fight you if you did’

‘And you know I’d win Lisa’ Josh said with a heavy sigh ‘come on I’ve asked nothing of you since you ended things. Remember I haven’t done anything wrong you were the one who dumped me....by text no doubt! I mean teenagers do that not women in their forties!’

‘You da-‘ Lisa began

‘Yeah I dare’ Josh said bluntly ‘come on even your parents think what you did is disgusting! Why didn’t you end it when I came home for Easter? That would’ve been the decent thing to do. To have done it to my face not by text when I was on the other side of the world and not been able to do a dammed thing about it! I mean what the hell did you tell our sons?’

‘I didn’t tell them anything you were on tour and you know I didn’t introduce James to them til recently’

‘Oh so you do have some modicum of decency!’ Josh said sarcastically.

Lisa’s temper flared again.
‘Don’t start Josh’ she snapped ‘I do not want Josef to have any contact with this slut you’re fucking’

Josh had to use all his self control not to punch the wall.
‘Okay one Louisa is not a slut’ he hissed his face inches away from Lisa's and his voice trembling with rage ‘she’s a beautiful woman who makes me the happiest I’ve been in YEARS! And two not that it is any of your god dammed fucking business but we are not ‘fucking’. After all the shit you put me through I want to make sure that going that far is the right thing to do. I want this to be the last relationship I’m ever in. I want you to be my last mistake. You know that weekend in Madrid I was going to ask you to marry me?’ Jesus Christ Lisa I was in love with you! I wanted to make you my wife!’

Lisa’s eyes widened to the size of saucers and her jaw dropped.

‘Yeah and I spend a hundred thousand bucks on a ring from Tiffany’s too!’ Josh spat ‘boy am I glad they have a return policy!’

‘I-I-I-....’ She stuttered.

‘What? You wouldn’t have dumped me if you knew I was going to propose?’ Josh said with a snort ‘course you wouldn’t have! My question is how long was this thing with James going on before you dumped me?’

‘That’s none of your business!’

‘Oh I think it is’ Josh said venomously.

Josh’s tone alarmed Lisa and she stuttered.

‘Sixmonths’ she muttered.

‘Sorry I didn’t quite hear that’ Josh said sarcastically cupping a hand behind his ear.

‘Oh you heard’ Lisa snapped ‘six damn months’

‘Oh since the beginning of my tour that explains a whole lot!’ Josh stormed ‘fucking hell Lisa does James know we were still being intimate at that stage? I bet he doesn’t’

The look on Lisa’s face said it all.

‘I bet your parents don’t know either’ Josh said rolling his eyes ‘or you have issues with me wanting to introduce Louisa to the boys? Why is it only you with this beef? I was talking to your mother during the week and even she reckons I should do it! You know what her words were?’’

‘I-I....’

‘They were’ Josh continued cutting across Lisa’s stuttering ‘Josh if you ever meet a new woman that you have a real connection with and you want to be with long term introduce her to the boys. If she’s the right one she won’t have any issues with you being a father and will want to meet him’ I’ve asked Louisa if she wants to meet them and she does. Now I won’t introduce her to them if you truly have a valid reason for not wanting me to but they are my sons and I think they deserve to meet the woman who’s healed my heart’

‘But I don’t know anything about her!’

‘So?’ Josh exclaimed ‘I don’t know anything about your new man! Apart from the fact you were doffing both of us at the same time!’

‘Can we drop that?’ Lisa snapped ‘that is not relevant to the subject at hand’

‘Okay I’m going to say this and say this only once’ Josh said ‘her name is Louisa Anne Riminton she’s an Equine Veterinarian at Leacham and Byley large animal hospital near Aqueduct racetrack. She’s thirty years old about five feet seven inches tall and about a hundred and fifty pounds or there’s abouts. She has long red hair, blue eyes, a piercing below her bottom lip, a small mole under her left eye. She likes horse riding, photography, reading and her hobby is playing and restoring old violins and violas. She got her education at Melbourne University in Australia where she’s from. And she graduated with a double degree in Veterinary Medicine and Music specialising in the Violin. She taught herself to play the viola off watching videos on YouTube and she has a dog called Mocha she adopted from the Queens A.S.P.C.A and a cat called Mocha she adopted from a breeder in Florida. And no we are not being intimate’

Lisa’s mouth hung open.

‘There you know all about her now’ Josh said abruptly leaning against the refrigerator ‘now she doesn’t sound like such a bad person to introduce to our sons does she? That doesn’t sound like a slut does it?’

‘Well I suppose not’ Lisa said stiffly.

‘Your dammed right it’s not’ Josh said ‘now if it’s alright by you I was planning on introducing them this weekend. Please don’t stand in my way Lisa as I said I don’t want to fight you on anything concerning our sons. You didn’t ask me if you could introduce James to them so I shouldn’t really have to ask you if I can introduce them to Louisa. I’m doing the decent and honourable thing here’

There was a long silence as Lisa considered his statement
‘Alright you can introduce them to this woman’ she said screwing up her nose ‘just don’t expect me to like it’

‘I’m not asking you to like it Lisa’ Josh said wearily ‘just go with it yeah? Louisa isn’t an evil woman. I wouldn’t be with her if she was and two I wouldn’t introduce her to my boys if she was. You may think differently but I am not stupid’

Lisa rolled her eyes.

‘Can I collect my sons now?’ Josh asked tiredly ‘I want to spend this week with them as productively as possible’

‘Go on’

Josh left the kitchen and sneaked into the lounge room creeping up behind his son and calling BOO!

Josef jumped and turned around his round little face splitting in two with the biggest smile when he saw his Dad.

‘Daddy!” he shrilled throwing his arms around Josh’s neck.

‘Hey monster’ Josh said affectionately ruffling Josef’s hair ‘how’s things?’

‘I’m watchin’ the Wiggles! Gramma got it for me!’

‘Have you finished? D’you want to watch it at my place or save it for when you come back to Mommy’s?’

‘Save it’ Josef said squeezing Josh around the neck ‘can we go sliding today?’

‘Sure but we have lunch first alright?’ Josh said ‘a good lunch not chicken nuggets’

‘Aw but I wuv chicken nuggets!’

‘I know but they’re only for a treat not every day. Mommy and Grandma don’t give you chicken nuggets all the time do they?’

‘Naw’

‘Come on then d’you have any toys you want to bring with you?’

‘Nah Mommy packed everythin’

‘Let's find your brothers and go then’

Josh picked Josef up and Lisa approached them kissing Josef on head.
‘You be good for Daddy alright Jo?’ her whole demeanour changing to something more friendly and soft ‘go to bed when he tells you and remember to brush your teeth. I love you’

‘Wuv you too Mommy’

Within an hour Josh was back at his apartment with Josef, Sam and Ben and serving up noodles for lunch.

‘I have a question for you three’ Josh said as they sat down to eat.

‘Am I in twouble?’ Josef asked his brown eyes awash with worry.

'Are we?' Ben asked

‘No no on you’re not in trouble’ Josh said ‘I have a very special friend who wants to meet you this weekend when she comes to visit. Do you want to meet her?’

‘Is she your girlfrwend?’ Josef asked

Josh took a deep breath.
‘Yeah she is’ he said ‘she’s very special to me and she wants to meet you three’

‘She does?’

‘Uh huh. She’s coming over tomorrow and I thought we could go for a picnic in Central Park’

‘Can we go sliding?’

‘Sure’

Josef lit up like the Vegas strip.
‘Okay then!’ he said brightly ‘what’s her name?’

‘Louisa but you can call her Lou or Louie okay?’

‘Okay!’

Later that night after Josef and the Twins were in bed Josh picked up his Blackberry and rang Louisa. Almost instantly the line picked up and she answered with.

‘Fancy hearing from you Mr Bell’

‘Hey sweetheart how are you?’ he said tiredly.

‘I’m alright. You? You sound stuffed’

‘I am I’ve been chasing the boys around all day’ Josh said with a yawn ‘my kids are like the energizer bunny they goes and goes and goes and goes’

‘The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree then does it?’ Louisa said with a giggle ‘after our horse riding expedition a few weeks ago I would definitely say that’s the case’

‘Oh don’t mention that I’m still walking funny’ Josh said.

Louisa giggled shrilly.
‘That doesn’t sound dirty at all’ she said ‘imagine how you’d walk if we had done something dirty?’

‘Maybe we can do that the next time we go out’ Josh said huskily.

‘J you know I’m not ready for that just yet’ Louisa said softly ‘I want to make sure going that far is the right thing to do, you understand don’t you?’

‘You know I do’ Josh said ‘sorry if I was pushing you’

‘No you’re not and I appreciate that’ Louisa said ‘so what did you get up to today?’

‘Lots of kid stuff’ Josh said ‘two Wiggles DVD’s and Toy Story three and Jo insisted we make some chocolate cookies so of course we had to go shopping for the ingredients. Then we both made an enormous mess of the kitchen. I have chocolate where I’m sure there shouldn’t be chocolate’

Louisa let out a great snort of laughter.
‘Ahahaha! But was it worth the end product?’ she said with a snort ‘should Wolfgang Puck be worried?’

‘Oh definitely’ Josh said ‘I’ve discussed it with my sons and I’m going to quit the music business and open a chain of cookie shops. I think selling the Strad would be the capital I need to get going’

‘Ha ha’ Louisa said dryly ‘that’s not going to happen. I like your humour’

‘Ah all the chicks say that’

‘Oh yeah I’m sure they do’ Louisa said with a giggle ‘so how did picking the boys up go?’

‘Oh well that could’ve gone better’ Josh said dryly ‘Lisa and I had a blazing argument and she had several less than complimentary things to say about you but thankfully Jo didn’t know anything about it’

‘Why would she be so mean about me?’ Louisa exclaimed in surprise ‘I don’t know her! I’ve never met her. I don’t even know what she looks like!’

‘Yeah well you tell me that and we’ll both know’ Josh said wearily rubbing his face ‘but I put her in her place that you were the one for me and I wouldn’t take any more of that vitriolic bullshit’

‘So you defended my honour?’ Louisa asked softly.

‘Yeah if you call it that’ Josh said feeling his face grow warm ‘I was thinking how would you like to come over a bit earlier on Saturday? I’d like to introduce you to my sons’

‘Sure! B-but is Lisa alright with that?’ Louisa asked uncertainly.

‘Well she wasn’t entirely happy about it’ Josh said ‘but I reasoned with her. I said if she could introduce her partner to them without asking me I could introduce Josef to you without asking her but I was asking because it’s the decent and honourable thing to do. She couldn’t argue with that and is reluctantly alright with you meeting our boys’

‘Okay then so would eleven be alright?’ Louisa suggested ‘then maybe all five of us can go somewhere for lunch’

‘Sounds good’ Josh said happily ‘Josef is especially excited to meet you especially when I told him you were an ‘animal doctor’

‘He sounds like a cool kid’ Louisa said ‘I look forward to meeting him. If he’s as charismatic as his father I’m sure we’ll get on like a house on fire’

‘Oh you’re the one sucking up to me now’ Josh said with a chuckle.

‘D’you like it?’

‘From you sweetheart yes I do’ Josh said with a yawn ‘sorry about that’

‘Nah that’s alright I better let you go’ Louisa said ‘the boys will probably be up early which means you’ll be getting up early and you’re going to need the sleep. I’ll ring tomorrow alright?’

‘I look forward to it’ Josh said ‘sweet dreams sweetheart’

‘You too Josh’
