Part 8 – Brown Eyes:
“Honey yah it’s no surprise
That I got lost In your brown eyes” - Lady GagaZack realized a lot of things on his last trip to California. Their argument had reaffirmed his fears that they were at different points in their life and had different ideals for what they wanted out of their relationship. Zack had had enough of the clubbing scene and was ready to settle down into a long term committed relationship where as Brian enjoyed going out too much to just stay at home with one man for the rest of his life. His hinting of a threesome and constant flirting with various men right in front of Zack made that painfully obvious.
He found himself spending most nights by himself just thinking about his life, which usually ended up in him crying when he realized that there was nothing left in his relationship. He still talked frequently with Brian, but the conversation just didn’t seem to flow like it would have only a few weeks ago. He could begin to feel his heart start to break as every minute he thought about Brian turned into hours and the plunging feeling would not go away.
He often found himself daydreaming at work, thinking back to the first time he met Brian, the first time he kissed Brian and the first time he had sex with Brian. The best Summer of his life. He imagined Brian standing in front of him with that Adonis body of his, every feature absolutely perfect, with that charming smile he loved so much.
He also found himself dreaming about his lover. His dreams were always the same; he would always be coming home and waiting on the other side of the door was Brian with the biggest hug and kiss for him. He would always wake up smiling but then stop when he realized it was a dream.
He knew he had to stop leading the other man on.
It wasn’t until the weekend before Brian was due to fly to New York that Zack had finally made his heart wrenching decision. He told Brian to not come and while his boyfriend was concerned at first, Zack’s reassurance that he would instead be flying to California seemed to quell any doubts that were in his mind. This only added to Zack’s guilt.
The usually quick flight across the country due to excitement was considerably slower this time, his stomach churning as he imagined Brian’s face when he told him the news. He glanced at his watch every now and then, feeling slightly frustrated each time he checked when he saw that less then five minutes had elapsed. He groaned as he tried to indulge himself in the book he’d brought with him, failing when he couldn’t even concentrate on the words, his anxiety about what was about to happen was far to much to delve into the fictional story.
He felt his heart begin to beat faster when he heard the captain announce that they were about to land at the Los Angeles terminal. He stood up warily after they landed, his legs turning to jelly as the enormity of the situation finally dawned on him. He tried to take deep, relaxing breaths but discovered that his body did not want to cooperate with him; his heart beating so fast that he was sure he was going to have a panic attack.
He collected his luggage and walked slowly towards where he saw Brian was waiting for him, grinning at him. He tried to concentrate on calming his breathing as he approached the other man but the hard hammering of his heart was making that increasingly difficult.
Brian looked at him oddly for a moment before smiling as he kissed the slightly smaller man on the cheek and took his luggage. “I’ll take that.” He said in that irresistible voice of his. “You look like you’re struggling.”
“Thanks.” Zack muttered as he dropped his gaze to the airport floor, suddenly becoming interested in his sneakers.
Brian didn’t seem to notice as he steered his slightly smaller lover to his waiting Black Mustang in the car park.
He did notice that something was wrong, however, when almost half way through their drive that Zack was dead silent and staring longingly out of the passenger side window, his green eyes clouded over in obvious sadness. “What’s wrong?” He asked bluntly.
Zack didn’t even bother to turn to face the other man, knowing that the emotion would get the better of him. “Nothin’.” He mumbled.
“If nothing’s wrong, then can you talk?!” Brian said shortly, his voice growing louder in volume.
“There’s nothing to talk about.” Zack said plainly, his head finally turning to look at the other man, who looked furious.
“Are you serious?” Brian snapped, his attention on the road had become not as important. “I haven’t seen you for two fucking weeks. Surely there is something to talk about!”
“I’m just tired, okay?” Zack said weakly, watching Brian intently.
Brian sighed and turned his attention back to the road. “Great fucking start to the weekend.” He mumbled as he turned up the music on his CD player, the familiar Metallica echoing through the car.
Zack was thankful for the distraction as he turned away from the other man just as he felt a single tear roll down the right side of his face.
The only sound during the remainder of the drive to Brian’s house was the stereo in the car playing both familiar and foreign tracks for the pair, who was not even acknowledging the other person. This stopped, however, when they pulled into Brian’s driveway and he shut off the engine and turned to smile at his lover. “Welcome home.” He said, flashing his straight, white teeth.
Those two words tugged at his heartstrings more then he could have imagined as he smiled back before climbing out of the car. He went to grab his luggage from the back seat only to have it snatched away from right in front of him by the other man with that cheeky smirk of his.
He followed Brian into the large house, keeping a slight distance as he shut the door and went to take a seat on the couch while Brian ran upstairs with his large carry bag. It only took an instant before Zack found the familiar hands of his lover wrapping themselves around his body.
“Brian, we need to talk.” Zack tried to protest as he found himself being pushed harshly up against the couch, Brian’s strength too much to compete with.
“We can talk later.” Brian purred as he pushed his small lips hard against Zack’s luscious, pouty ones.
Zack struggled for a moment against his much stronger lover but reluctantly found himself giving into the delicious temptation that had him pinned to the couch. He felt Brian’s tongue push hard into his mouth, the thick muscle plunging into his moist cavern, rubbing hard against his own tongue.
He could not have stifled the moan that escaped his lips even if his life depended on it. The feeling of Brian’s muscular body pinning him hard to the couch while their erections rubbed together feverishly through their pants felt so amazing that he didn’t want it to stop.
It was then that he realized that what he was doing was wrong.
He pulled back from the kiss and pushed Brian partially off him, who only looked at him curiously. “What’s wrong? I thought you were enjoying it.” Brian said curiously, his brown eyes laced heavily with lust as he stared down at the other man.
“I was.” Zack admitted. “But, we need to talk.”
Brian pulled back and sat on the couch, forcing Zack to do the same. “About what?” He asked.
Zack couldn’t help but notice how Brian’s beautiful brown eyes suddenly became laced over with sadness. “About us.” He said simply, the guilt inside of him made his stomach churn.
“Why?” Brian asked, his eyes turning even sadder.
“It’s not fair for either of us.” Zack answered, watching his lover go rigid. “I know it as well as you do that we both want different things from this. I want someone I can settle down with but I can see you’re not ready or willing to give up your lifestyle.”
“I see.” Brian said quietly, his left eyebrow cocking up slightly.
“I didn’t want to do this at all!” Zack blurted out and watched as Brian almost looked angrily at him. “I love you but it’s not going to work. We are two different people living on opposite sides of the country wasting our time because we want different things!”
Brian just stared at him blankly; those brown eyes had no emotion whatsoever.
“Are you going to say anything?!” Zack cried, his eyes watering up.
But Brian said nothing.
“Please?!” Zack cried, the first of the many tears that would soon be following escaped.
“I don’t know what you want me to say.” Brian said plainly after a few minutes. “I don’t know where this has all come from. I thought we had a good relationship but apparently I was wrong.”
Zack opened his mouth to speak but the only noise that came out was a muffled sob.
“Zack, please stop crying.” Brian said quietly. “I love you.” He tilted Zack’s chin up to look at him, their respective brown and green eyes staring longingly into each other, both sets showing their sadness and love.
“Brian…” Zack whimpered as more tears dripped down the sides of his face, his green eyes turning brighter in colour with every tear.
“I’m sorry I can’t give you what you want.” Brian said softly, his brown eyes starting to fill up with tears. “I wish I could be what you’re looking for but I’m not.”
“You are what I’m looking for.” Zack tried to protest.
“No, I’m not.” Brian said simply. “I don’t want to settle down just yet. I wish I did, for you. But I don’t. I’m sorry you had to waste all this time on me.” He added as he stood up and started to walk away from the couch.
“Where are you going?” Zack called out but he received no response as he watched his love walk up the stairs before he heard the soft click of the door closing upstairs.
Zack couldn’t have stopped the waterfall of tears that escaped him as he collapsed on the couch, burying his head deep into one of the cushions, letting all the emotion wash over him and start to ruin Brian’s furniture. He tried to stop but every time he managed to control himself, all his memories flooded straight back to him. He hoped he did the right thing.
He didn’t know how long he stayed like that.
It wasn’t until early the next morning that he woke up, wrapped tightly in one of Brian’s sheets and his head buried deep into a different pillow. He sat up slowly, his head throbbing in pain as he looked around the bright beach house. His attention immediately became focused on another room where he could hear some beautiful music playing.
He followed the sound and smiled as he saw Brian playing an acoustic guitar and singing. He watched with excitement as he saw Brian deriving so much pleasure from playing. But the amazing music ended all too soon when Brian turned around to see him watching.
“You should probably be getting ready. Your plane flies out in 3 hours.” Brian said plainly as he packed away the battered acoustic guitar into its case.
“Thanks.” Zack said quietly as he turned to leave the room.
“I’ll take you to the airport.” Brian mumbled as he walked past the other man and through to the kitchen.
“It’s alright, you don’t have to.” Zack said quietly as he followed Brian towards the kitchen.
“I know I don’t have to. I want to.” Brian responded with a slight smile. “It’s probably going to be the last time I ever see you, anyway.”
The next few hours seemed to fly by in record time. Zack found himself in the passenger seat of Brian’s car and on the way to the airport. The pair barely spoke on the way to the terminal, making it even more awkward as Brian parked the car and insisted on seeing him check in.
It also led to Brian insisting that he wanted to make sure he made it on the plane alright.
“Flight 43L to New York now boarding.” The automatic female voice said over the intercom after a little while.
“That’s me.” Zack said awkwardly as he stood up. “Thank you.”
“The pleasure is all mine.” Brian purred, almost seductively, making Zack feel even more awkward. “If maybe by some miracle you ever want to come back to California one day, let me know.”
“Maybe. If you’re lucky.” Zack said with a smirk.
“Hope so.” Brian said as the female voice paged again. “Hope I’ll be ready for that day.”
Zack felt himself tear up as he hugged the other man tightly, burying his head deeply into Brian’s chest.
He felt Brian’s arms squeeze tightly around him and place a soft kiss on the top of his head. “Love you.” He mumbled against Zack’s soft hair.
The pair finally pulled apart and looked at each other once more, their brown and green eyes staring hard in thought at the others, almost like they were looking for something deep within.
“Love you.” Zack mumbled as he gathered his bag and headed towards the departure gate, a smile on his face as he felt Brian’s brown eyes watching him intently.
As he arrived back home after a long flight and drive from the airport, he picked up the photo of himself and Brian in his tiny apartment that sat next to his fish, the picture taken right after they’d just met, and wondered if he’d done the right thing after all. It made him feel physically sick when he realized he could have just given away his key to happiness.
He put the frame back down and smiled. If they were to be, then they would.
