When Night Falls(Pt8)
16yr old Crystal Griffith lounged by the pool, slim headphones plugged in her ears. Her long manicured fingers tapped on the chair to the beat. A small smile curved her lips at the good fortune her life took the turn for......
Losing her mother when she was 12, she became custody of the state, shipped from one foster home to another. Crystal gave up any hope of finding a stable family life with any of them and took up with the other homeless teenagers on the streets of LA. That's where she learned of the secret society of vampires in LA. She and a friend stumbled upon one late one night walking back to the shabby building they called home. They were lucky to have escaped unhurt, when he noticed them. Her friend begged for their lives and he threatened to hunt them down if they told anyone. She learned how to pick them out of any crowd after that.
Crystal met Dan a few weeks later. He basically swept the young 16yr old off her feet. Showering her with gifts of clothes, jewelry, hot decent meals and a better place to stay. She moved into his sparsely furnished apartment two months later. Crystal learned quickly that Dan was a different person. He dealt drugs out to anyone that would buy them, using her as the go between. She hated him for using her and dealt a harsh blow every time she tried to run away.
Then she met Joe one night in the alley behind a club where she had delivered a package for Dan. His soft accented voice close to her ear startled her, causing Crystal to scream. She spun around so fast that she landed on her rump, a sharp pain shot up her arm. Turning her heated glare at the man that caused her to fall, all words left her thoughts. Crystal knew immediately what he was. She sprang to her feet intent on running when he grabbed her arm. His mere size against her much smaller one of 5' 4" was enough to frighten her. But his soft voice quickly calmed her fears, the concern in which he showed for causing her injury, was genuine.
Crystal spoke briefly with him and learned of what Joe needed. He told her that he had heard that she could get what he wanted and would pay a good sum for it. She agreed to meet him at the appointed club in one week to deliver it.
Two men showed up at the apartment a few weeks later. They threatened to kill Dan if he so much as interfered with them taking Crystal. She knew what they were and who had sent them. She packed what little belongings she possessed, punched Dan in the face and left. She soon found herself flying over the Atlantic Ocean toward Ireland. When she arrived at Joe's house and knocked on the front door. She could tell by his shocked expression that he wasn't expecting her, giving her second thoughts that it was Joe that sent for her. The uneasiness quickly took hold in the pit of her stomach. Joe had left her standing in the doorway and a few minutes later heard him yelling. Stepping into the house, she followed his voice to find him on the phone. When he finished, he had slammed it down, stared long and hard at her and left the room, leaving Crystal at a loss of what to do. She would latter learn that Joe had no idea that she was coming to stay with him.
Now she was in a strange country, in a stranger's home. Although she had met Joe on numerous occasions while he was in LA she barely knew him. If the look that he gave her was any indication, he didn't want her there. She had very little money left, surely not enough to buy a plane ticket back to the States. Glancing around the lavish room, Crystal's eyes fell on his wallet that was carelessly tossed on the table. She snatched it from the table and left the house.
Having no idea which way to go, she walked down the dark country road. Mentally kicking herself for not paying better attention at the passing scenery, picking out road signs in the dark while on the ride to his house. She didn't know how long she had been walking, when Joe landed in front of her, scaring her again, like the first time. Joe had apologized for his behavior and didn't get angry at her for stealing his wallet. Crystal clang tightly to his neck, hoping he wouldn't drop her, as he flew them back to his house.
Since that night, Crystal learned so much about Joe. He didn't hesitate in signing the legal guardianship papers that she had brought with her. How he went out of his way to make her stay more comfortable. Wouldn't take no for an answer when he took her shopping for whatever she needed. Threw a big party on her 17th birthday, where she finally met Amber, who took an instant liking to her. All his other friends, vampire and mortal alike came to the party.
Certain nights she would find Joe out on the balcony, several bottles of blood wine sat empty on the table. In his drunken babble, Crystal listened to him talk about Sav or his given name Rick, which confused her in the begining. Any other time he wouldn't do that. She knew him from what others had said about Sav and meeting him that one time in LA and by the old pictures that were scattered around the house. Crystal understood his pain and sadness and comforted him when he needed it. What she couldn't understand, was how this man that could never want for anything, would live forever and larger than life in her eyes, could break down in tears. Amber took her aside one evening and explained it all to her.
Pulling her thoughts back to the present Crystal hit the repeat button on the player and adjusted her sunglass. A sense of being watched came over her. "You're up early." She yelled out, then smiled and waved knowing that Joe had heard her.
Inside the house, shielded by the heavily tinted glass that blocked the sun. Joe leaned against the sliding glass doorframe that over looked the sparkling blue water of the pool. He chuckled to himself upon hearing the music she was listening too. Pyromania. ‘Talk about ancient oldies.' He thought. It was one of Crystal's favorite albums from Def Leppard, since Joe had shown her the vast music collection he had. She would spend hours in there during the day reading the titles as she listened to something else.
Joe raked his eyes over her petite figure. Her breast rose with every breath she took. The sun sparkled off of the thin gold chain that was fastened around her waist. His eyes traveled further down to her slender legs. Her hair wasn't the dark blonde that it used to be when she first came to live with him. The sun had lightened it by the many hours she spent out by the pool or in the gardens. Just as the sunflower colored bikini highlighted her tan.
Joe let his mind wonder. Imagining what her skin would feel like warmed by the sun, to kiss her full lips and have her legs wrapped tightly around his waist. To taste the blood that raced just below the surface. Leaning his head on the door, he hoped the sun heated glass would burn those images from his mind. He knew for certain that Crystal had never been touched by a man, not even by that creep of a boyfriend she had. Dan didn't care about the sexual part of their relationship, only that she delivered the packages and brought back the money. If she was late or tried to leave, Dan would smack her around. Joe learned about those times by their talks late into the night. He told Crystal that she would never have to worry about that while she was with him. No harm would come to her and if it did, Joe would take care of it.
"Get a grip Elliott, she's too young." He mumbled to no one.
The shrill ringing of the phone nearly sent him through the roof. Taking a deep breath, he quickly went over and snatched it up.
"Hello!"
"Since when did you yell into the phone when answering?"
Joe was speechless by the voice he hadn't heard in months.
"Joe, are you there?"
"Wha...yeah...yeah I'm here." He finally answered, easing down on the chair. "How are you Rick?"
"I'm fine, doing really good. How about you?" Sav was greeted by the slight static over the line. "Aren't you going to say anything?"
"N....yes!...I'm just shocked that you called me. I sent dozens of letters and phone calls, you never responded to any of them."
"I read the letters. Phil and Gail gave me your messages. I had a lot of thinking to do, work things out on my own."
"Did you work them out?" Joe's heart slammed into his chest waiting for the answer that seemed to take forever to come over the line.
"Yes." Sav heard the sigh of relief filter through the line. "I love you Joe. I never lost sight of that the whole time I was here, going over everything in my mind."
"When are you coming home?"
Sav heard the waver in his voice. "In a few days. I'm in New York, visiting with Thomas and his family. I'm staying at Kyle's, so you can call me there."
"Rick, I'm so sorry for what happ..."
"We'll talk about it when I get home."
"Does this mean you forgive me?"
"Is Nick there with you?"
"Um... h.he's upstairs, still sleeping." Joe answered after a long pause and then quickly added. "In his room."
"Listen I have to go. Kyle is leaving soon, he has to go play lawyer for the day in court." Sav chuckled. "I want to see him off before I go to sleep."
O.ok." Joe mumbled, he wanted to talk longer, but knew that Sav needed his rest. "I'll see you soon....love you too."
"I'll be there in a few days."
"Great...bye Sav."
"Oh and Joe." Sav paused on the line. "I do forgive you."
Joe heard the soft click of the line as Sav hung up. He slowly replaced the receiver in its cradle. He slumped back in the chair, trying to control the jitters that tingled through out his body. He felt like jumping around the room, yelling at the top of his lungs from shear giddiness, that Sav had forgiven him and was coming home.
He quickly sat up, mind reeling with ideas. A frown replaced the smile on his face. He glanced toward the ceiling in the general direction of Nick's room.
"You are not going to be here when Sav gets home." Joe said out loud and bounded up the stairs to wake Nick and kick him out of the house.
