Daylight bleakly attempted to stream in through the curtains, as it had been for many hours. Georgiana lay on her side, staring blankly at the red velvet fabric shifting gently in the breeze. Her mind had felt so detached, so empty that she had skipped every lesson of the day. Part of it was to prove a point to the whole lot of them on the other side of the door and partly she felt so down that she had no desire to step out and see them all. Carlene had made her at least four cups of tea that morning before leaving and had left her with a harsh warning that if she failed to show up at any of her lessons she would only get in more trouble. Georgiana felt past caring, what was the point in feeling anything if all that was out there was a black and white list of rules without alternatives.
Sweeping her red curls from her face, Georgiana glanced towards the clock, it was five already. She wiped her eyes in surprise that she had lain in bed for so long. She wondered if she should stay here and see how long it would take for them all to realise, or the other alternative was to go down to Mr Firth’s office at six thirty and do exactly as she was told. Sighing she slid herself up to sit with her face in her hands. She knew if she did not go down she might face the wrath of the headmaster as Eliza had done. That thought scared her, she had to admit.
After a well needed shower, Georgiana sat herself at the mirror, staring out her angry, bruised reflection. Running a brush through her hair and pulling it back into a ponytail, she frowned at the purple raised skin under her lip. Nothing a bit of foundation wouldn’t sort out, as she watched the colour disappear she felt a little brighter. With her confidence seeping back she pulled her skirt up carefully over her stitches and grabbed her shirt from the chair.
When it came to six thirty, Colin had to admit to himself that he was surprised when there was a gentle knock at his door.“Come in!” He called, not looking up from his work. “Please make sure you lock the door behind you Lady Alderley, I don’t expect any more visitors this evening.”
Georgiana turned the key and made her way over to his desk, rubbing her arms nervously. So much for her grand entrance, he hadn’t even looked at what she was wearing and how much make up she had managed to spread across her face. Eventually, and what seemed like an hour later he looked up over his glasses and frowned.
“I’m glad you managed to get here on time, however I don’t think the make up was necessary was it?”
Georgiana shrugged and sat down on the chair, fiddling with her fingers.
“Before we go any further, there is something I have to ask, and that is why you haven’t attended any lessons today, I have a list here of complaints from both tutors and they would like some answers.” He sighed, flicking through the papers that lay at the side of his desk. Georgiana watched, her eyes feeling glazed and hopeless. So what was this, another reason for her to get into trouble, another to add to the list.
“I didn’t feel like going” She answered eventually, sullen faced.
“You didn’t feel like it, well I’m sure plenty of other girls don’t feel like doing any of this but the point is that you have to!” Frustrated he banged the papers back down on the table and waited for her response.
“Look, I have tried really hard and it doesn’t matter what I do, I just end up getting in trouble so what is the fucking point!” She blared back at him, utterly fed up with the whole situation. She watched him stand up, holding her breath for a moment wondering what he was going to do. Calmly he removed his glasses with an annoyed sigh, placing both hands on the desk and leaning towards her with a steely glare.
“Lady Alderley, if you would like to go through the door to the left there is a bathroom where you can wash that mess off your face and then sit down, mouth shut and I will deal with you in a moment.”
Georgiana jumped to her feet and banged her hands on the desk, mirroring him and staring back with a face full of fury. She stared him out for several silent minutes before the sound of his phone bleeping furiously from inside the drawer broke the silence. To his surprise Georgiana bit her lip in annoyance, gave her biggest frown ever, then turned on her heels and flounced out of the door. Flopping back into his chair he took a deep sigh of relief whilst covering his face, feeling like he had just literally lost the will to live. Rolling the phone between his fingers he reluctantly scrolled through the seventeen text messages that flashed angrily at him from the last fifteen minutes.
He looked up with a start as the door creaked open and a very downcast Georgiana crept back through. She stood awkwardly in the corner for a moment, waiting to see what was going to happen next.
“That’s better!” He began, pausing as he noticed the bruising on her face that gave away the reason she had used so much make up. “Now, seeing as you’re here for another hour or so, and I need a break from my work. Tea or coffee?”
“Um, tea...thankyou...” Georgiana replied, stuttering in surprise and following him through to the back room. She nervously propped herself down on the edge of the sofa, picking up a nearby cushion and hugging it to her chest. She wasn’t aware of why exactly she felt nervous, in fact since she had arrived at the school, it had been her sole intention to show the staff exactly how much she was not going to allow them to have power and control over her. But this was different; he was being nice to her which had sent her off her guard. From her knowledge of how things worked here, she felt unsure about whether to trust him or not. Who could tell if this was one of the weird mind games they chose to play. Gripping the cushion close she stared blankly ahead of her, this situation was even further out of her comfort zone especially as she was now sat in a tutor’s private apartment which was strictly forbidden.
“So, are we going to be able to find out why you weren’t at your classes this morning?” He asked, making her jump with a start out of her daydream and take the mug that he was holding out I her direction.
“I told you, I didn’t feel like it.”
“What was it exactly that you didn’t feel like doing, it was a posture, poise and deportment class wasn’t it?”
“Yeah,” She sighed, “Half an hour of walking up and down with a stupid book on my head, I mean who the hell is ever going to care about how I walk, and especially if I can walk with a book on my head.”
“It can’t be that bad?”
“Yes it can! Especially when it just doesn’t work on me and you have all those stuck up their arse bitches that laugh and think they’re better than me just because I can’t balance a fucking book on my head.” She buried her face in the cushion. “I mean how ridiculous is that?”
Colin sat down beside her, “I know you don’t want to hear this but it is a case of practice. “ He said encouragingly, gently rubbing her back.
“Its not fucking practice, my head is the wrong shape, I don’t know, it’s just all crap. I hate this place, I want to go home.” She broke down finally, sobbing onto his chest. For a second he wasn’t sure how to react but instinct kicked in and he put his arm around her, pulling her in close while she cried.
This wasn’t the first time he had one of the girls come into his office and burst into tears, but it was the first time he had actually felt the compassion to comfort one of them. He shot a look to the door, wondering if it was locked, he was pretty sure it was. It was there in the rules, no emotional contact, no physical reassurance and most definitely never invite a student into your personal quarters. Looked like he had broken all of those rules all in one evening, but for once he didn’t really care. Although the headmaster had warned him about this girl, so far he had secretly felt enchanted by her ways. There was something ever so different about her but so far he hadn’t a clue what it was.
After a few minutes she calmed down and sat back, wiping her eyes and reaching for her drink.
“I think you need some help, maybe if I help you practise while you’re in here in the evenings then it may just put you one step ahead.” He offered. Georgiana looked up at him, red eyed and puffy faced, shocked at his offer of help.
“I don’t know...”
“Well, it’s either that or you have to explain to Mr Green why you were absent and then he isn’t going to be too pleased. By rights I should be punishing you for this morning, and the make up, and the occasional swearing. Only problem is, the list is growing and to be honest, I’m feeling generous today.”
“No, I mean, thank you, yes I would like some help.” She replied feeling relieved that he was being so nice but cautious about how long that might last.
“Good!” He smiled, pulling her up to stand and handing a large book to her. Ignoring her initial frown, he lifted her hands which were holding the book, and placed them upon her head.
“You could smile.” He suggested.
“I look like a twat!” She pouted in annoyance.
“Not at all,” He replied, “Now close your eyes.”
Georgiana made a face for a moment before closing her eyes. He moved behind her, his hands gripped her shoulders, pulling them back a fraction before slipping down to her waist.
“It’s all in your centre of gravity.” He said softly, pushing her hips forward ever so slightly and sliding back up under her arms, his fingers gently pulling her chest back towards him. She quickened her breath at the sensation of feeling him so close behind her. He held her still for a moment in that pose, his hands holding her softly against him.
“Now ever so slowly, I want you to remove your hands from the book.” He whispered into her ear, with her eyes shut she could only sense his expression; her only sensation of touch had gone as he removed his hands from her. As she opened her eyes and realised she was managing to stand effortlessly with the book balanced on her head she let out a small giggle.
“It’s working”, she squeaked.
“Don’t lose your concentration.” He warned, taking hold of her hands and pulling them outstretched towards him, slowly she took a few steps forward.
“Bloody hell, you’re a miracle worker!” She smiled, for the first time her eyes brightening. He looked impressed and waited as she took a few more steps towards him.
“Close your eyes for a moment try and keep your centre of balance.” He said, keeping himself inches away from her, close enough that she could feel his body heat. His breath warm against her face. Georgiana closed her eyes, relaxed herself into the pose, her mind wandered into drifting back to happier times, back home, away from the hell of the last few weeks.
Her mind shot suddenly back to reality as she felt his lips gently brushing against her own. Moving with her own intuition she instinctively reacted, opening her lips slightly and returning his kiss. They stood silently for a moment, she hardly dared move as he kissed her, holding her cheek softly, pressing her against him. Losing herself in the heady taste of him, she took a sharp intake of breath, the warm feelings surging through her body took over and she flung her arms around his neck, pulling him even closer, hearing a dull thud as the book fell to the side of her.
A few minutes later he pulled away suddenly, she stood still, watching him pace around, head in his hands.
“This shouldn’t be happening.”
“I know that.” She sighed, “So what now?”
“I don’t know.” He shrugged, bending down to pick up the book that had fallen to the ground. “I’m so sorry Georgiana; you’d better go back to your room. Please don’t speak to anyone about what just happened, for your own sake as well as mine.”
She nodded, confused by his sudden coldness. Rubbing her arms she picked up her bag and without speaking a word, ran towards the door, not wanting him to see the tears that were already falling down her cheeks.
Carlene looked up from her book to see Georgiana race back into their room and throw herself into bed, covering herself with the duvet and sobbing hard into her pillow. Why had he done this, and more to the point, why had she allowed it to happen? If this was one of the sick mind games in this place then she was done, done with all of it. Her fingers gently brushed along her lips, the memory of his touch and the taste of his kiss lingering and hurting her even more.
Colin sat with his head in his hands; he couldn’t believe how stupid he had been tonight. This girl had done something to him, he wasn’t sure what it was but he knew that ever since he had met her there had been something about her. That mysterious thing that had made him want to help her, made him notice her sweet smile and her infectious giggle. What had possessed him to act upon it though; he had never felt like this about any of the other students. In fact it had always been an emotionless thing, a job, faceless people who did not interest him. He sighed again, this was dangerous. It had never been known for any of the staff to have feelings towards the students; in fact any of the acts carried out by his colleagues were purely in reaction to the behaviour of the girls. Nothing could stay secret in this place, even if you wanted it to be that way. How could he keep hidden the fact that he had feelings for her, and how the hell could he explain all this to anybody.
