Chapter 8: Christmas Eve
Ethan knocked on Andy's door, "Hey bro, I'm done wrapping your gifts. I'm heading downstairs to wrap everyone else's."
He heard a loud thump and some other things moving around, "Okay, I'm almost done with yours and I'll meet you down there," she said through the door.
"You okay in there?"
"Yeah just tripped over this stupid box!"
He shook his head, "What time are the others getting here?" He asked looking at his phone to check the time.
"Um, I think Angel said they were coming around four to wrap up some gifts for their parents."
It was only nine in the morning and tonight they were going to go over to Lynn's parents house for a Christmas Eve get together. She told them that it was a casual thing. She would play the piano and Alex would play his guitar and Brian would play the percussion box. They would play some of their own songs and some Christmas carols. Every now and then some one else would take up the piano or the guitar and would do a song or two.
Andy felt like she was hinting towards something but she just dismissed it and told her that she couldn't wait. Andy told Lynn that her family had this tradition to open one gift on Christmas Eve. She was wondering would she like to do that with her family this year. Lynn said she would bring it up to them and she would let her know.
If her parents went for it, that would be the time Ethan and her would give them the keys to their new home. Also break the news to them about the move.
"Want me to make you a fruit bowl?" He asked already knowing the answer.
"That would be amazing. Could you start a pot of coffee as well? I'm gonna need like six cups today," she said with a small laugh.
"Long as you work your magic mix," he said as he started to walk down the stairs and to get things ready.
Andy looked at her wrapped gifts and she shook her head. She should have just had that one store gift wrapped everything. The only ones that were wrapped nicely were the ones she got for Ethan and Lynn at the shop she went to with Alex and Brian.
She had paper bags labeled with a name on each of them and she sorted out the gifts. She and Ethan decided to get the trio's families gifts together and say that they were from the both of them. They asked them what they liked and before they left for Boston and did some Christmas shopping while in Virginia.
She looked at the paper bags and saw that the only one that was really full was Ethan's. They were going to wrap the trio's gifts together along with their families gifts today. She grabbed a few full plastic bags and started to head downstairs. She could smell the coffee and it was a welcoming scent.
She put the bags down in the living room and saw that there was a few more on the other side. She walked into the kitchen just as the coffee machine beeped and patted Ethan on the back letting him know that she was behind him.
"It's like we're back at work," he joked as he finished up putting some strawberries into a small bowl. Andy poured two cups of coffee and stirred them up and gave one to Ethan. She looked down at the counter and saw two fruit bowls. She looked up at him with a confused look.
"I figured since you made breakfast yesterday and ate a pancake, I'll eat a fruit bowl. No strawberries for me of course." She smiled and they both took their coffee cups and fruit bowls into the living room. She turned on the TV and found a movie channel.
"Thanks for making breakfast," she said as she put the wrapping paper and the scotch tape on the coffee table and sat down across from Ethan.
"No problem, thanks for making breakfast yesterday," he said with a smile and popped a piece of apple into his mouth.
"By the way how is your stomach? I know you ate a lot of stuff that you haven't eaten in a while." He looked at her with a worried look.
"I mean it hates me, but Brian was right, we're on vacation. I just have to be a little more mindful. My nights have been me getting up to go to the bathroom every thirty minutes."
"What about having smaller portions?"
She nodded, "Yeah, I could do that."
They started to wrap up their gifts and continued to talk about the rest of their vacation and what they wanted to do. The only thing that they were worried about was the trio's reaction about them moving. They also decided after they wrapped their gifts one of them would go and get a copy of one of the keys so Angel could have one too.
The six of them really clicked in a short amount of time that everything seemed way too good to be true. But they were taking it one day at a time and living in the moment. That's all that mattered.
********************************************************************************
"Nope, not as good as Andy's" Alex said as he took a sip of his coffee. They were at Lynn's parents house wrapping up gifts for Ethan and Andy. Then, they would head over to the town house with Angel and wrap up gifts for their families. Lynn smiled at Alex as she finished wrapping one of her gifts.
"What did you put in it?" Brian asked with a piece of ribbon in his mouth. He was wrapping a gift for Angel and he refused to use the sticky bows.
"The same exact things she puts in." He said with a sigh.
Lynn took his cup and took a sip and then pondered for a moment. "Did you put the sugar, honey, cinnamon, and then pour the coffee. Then add the powder creamer?"
"Damn it! I poured the coffee first." He said with a sigh and got up and walked into the kitchen.
"Are you going to have Andy sing tonight?" Brian asked still struggling with the ribbon bow.
Lynn looked up at him and could help but chuckle, "Ohh, yeah. I want to show her off." She said as she started to wrap a stack of books. Tim walked into the living room and smiled.
"Looks like Christmas exploded in here," He said looking at them.
His daughter looked up, "I'm sorry dad, we'll clean up when we're done."
He waved her off, "It's okay sweetheart. Your mother and I did the same thing last night." He walked over and gave her a kiss on her forehead. He started to walk away and Lynn remembered what Andy had asked her. She got up from the floor and rushed over to him.
"Hey dad I have a question," she said walking up to him.
"Sure honey," he took a sip of his coffee and waited for her to ask.
"Well Andy has this tradition with her family on Christmas Eve where everyone opens one gift. I was wondering if we could do that tonight with everyone." Just then Cathy walked up them and gave them both a kiss on the cheeks.
"What's going on?" She asked as Tim put his arm around her.
"Lynn was just asking if we could all open one gift tonight since it's one of Andy's traditions back home."
"Oh, how interesting. I think we could do that. What do you say honey?" She asked looking up at Tim. He looked between his wife and his daughter. His two favorite women in the world and he knew he couldn't say no.
"I don't see why not. We'll do it after you and the guys do some songs." Lynn smiled and she gave them both a hug.
"Thank you, thank you, thank you," she said with a big smile and rushed back towards the living room.
"This Andy sure has put a spark in her," he said looking at his wife.
She just nodded, "I'm just glad to see her smiling again." She said and gave him a small kiss on his lips. She pulled away and walked into the kitchen and started to get ready for a full house tonight.
Lynn came back into the living room and sat down on the floor and picked up her phone with excitement. She sent Andy a text saying that her parents said they could do her tradition. Once she sent it she smiled and went back to wrapping her gifts. Her phone chimed just as Alex sat down and took a sip of his brand new cup of coffee, "Nope, still not the same." He said with a sigh.
"Did you do what Lynn said?" Brian asked and now the ribbon he was trying to work with some how ended up wrapping around his head.
"Yes! I need to ask her what she does." He shook his head and he started to wrap a gift for Ethan.
Lynn checked her phone and saw text from a number she didn't know. "Hey, does this number look familiar to you guys?" She showed them and they looked.
"Hold on," Brian said pulling out his phone and started to type in the number and none of his contacts came up. Alex did the same thing and the same thing happened to him as well.
"What does the text say?" Alex asked putting his phone down. She opened up the text and they saw a confused and worried look.
"It says, 'She's not good enough,'" she looked at the two of them. Alex looked through his contacts and tapped on a name. She already knew who he was calling.
Brian scooted over to her and put his arm around her, "Kara's coming tonight right?" She just nodded.
"Okay, look," he took her phone away, "Before everything starts we'll talk to her and she can look into it." She just nodded. "Don't let this stop you from having a good time tonight. We're home and we're going to be surround by our friends and family and tomorrow is Christmas. You and Andy are going to have fun tonight. I'm sure she can't wait to see you."
Lynn leaned against her best friend, "You're right. It's probably some one we know but is too scared to say something to my face." She sat back up, "Now, let's finish this up and we'll head over to their place for some more wrapping."
"That's my girl," he said and kissed her cheek.
Alex came back in and sat down next to Lynn, "Kara's on her way over to their place right now to ask Andy if she got any messages as well." She just nodded and Alex rubbed her back comforting her.
"We'll figure this out." He told her. She nodded and kissed his cheek. They went back to wrapping their gifts.
Tim peaked into the living room and couldn't help but go down memory lane. He remembered when the three of them were figuring out their sound in that exact room. It took them months to find it and when they finally did, he told them to keep going, keep fighting and that the sky was the limit. He turned down the hallway and walked into the kitchen.
"Did you tell her?" Cathy asked as she wiped her hands on her apron. He shook his head and leaned against the counter.
"I can't seem to bring myself to tell her that the two people she doesn't want to see are going to be here tonight."
Cathy touched her husband's cheek, "Honey, I know you were caught in a tight spot yesterday and invited them on instinct, but you have to tell her at some point today."
He nodded and kissed her forehead, "I will. I'll tell her before she leaves for Andy's. Maybe we can try to keep them away from each other."
"One can only hope," she said as she patted his arm and returned to cutting up some vegetables for tonight.
***************************************************************************
"Kara?" Andy asked as the woman walked into the house. Andy closed the front door and followed her to the living room. Ethan looked up and he scrambled to stand up when she entered the room.
"Has Lynn gotten a hold of you in the last twenty minutes?" She asked as she sat on the couch. Andy walked over and stood next to Ethan and checked her phone.
"Just her saying that her parents are letting us open one present tonight."
"So she hasn't said anything about the text she got from a number she didn't know?"
Andy and Ethan looked at each other and shook their heads. Kara sighed, "This is what I was talking about. Now, I did see the video you posted and Lynn did tell me that she told you it was okay. But this is how things start. As for her cell phone number, obviously the people closest to her have it. So for some one to have her number is concerning."
"Well, what did the text say?" Ethan asked. Kara took out her phone from her purse and pulled up the text and gave it to them.
"Not good enough?" Andy asked.
"Andy, I need you to not think about this. Not now, from what I saw yesterday Lynn really does have strong feelings for you. But let me work on this and I'll let you know what I find. I'll be at the party tonight and we'll discuss it further before the festivities begin." She took her phone back and put it back in her purse.
"Don't worry we'll figure this out," she said and gave Andy a comforting pat on her arm.
"I'll see you tonight," without another word she walked towards the front door and let herself out. Andy looked at Ethan and then they both grabbed their phones and it wasn't a question who they were calling.
"Hey babe," Andy heard.
"Hey, Kara was just here. Did you get a text from someone?"
Andy heard a frustrated sigh, "Yeah. I got it right after I texted you. We don't know who it is. But if Kara was just there it was because this is what she was worried about. She already knew about the video, because I told her. But it has to be someone I know that has my number. I don't know if it could be Alexa, but I have a feeling it might be."
Andy ran her fingers through her hair and was pacing back and forth in the hallway.
"Please say something," she heard and she knew that Lynn was worried. Andy leaned against the wall and shook her head. She let out a breath.
"Are you okay?" Andy finally asked. Even though this seemed like a bit much, she just wanted to make sure she was okay.
"I'm okay, just a little worried."
Andy nodded, she looked at her watch and it was only noon, she would see her in a few hours.
"Andy?" She heard her soft voice say.
"Are you sure you want to do this? Us?"
Andy started to pace slowly. Everything in her head told her no, but everything in her heart and her gut were telling her to give this a chance. The last time she ignored her heart it got stomped on. There was something different about Lynn, something more and she didn't want to give her up.
"I got on this ride with you. This, crazy, rollercoaster ride. I don't think I'm getting off any time soon."
"There you go again, knowing exactly what to say," she could hear the smile in her voice and her heart skipped a beat.
"How about we talk about this more when you get here okay baby?"
"Sounds good, I'll see you soon."
"See you soon, bye beautiful," Andy hung up her phone and walked back into the living room. Ethan was just getting off with Alex.
"How did your conversation go?" He asked as she went to the liquor cabinet and was trying to find her favorite whiskey. When she did she poured some of it into one of the glasses and she took it straight.
"That bad?" He asked as she walked over to the couch and put the bottle and the glass on the coffee table.
"Hey, we don't need you drunk before tonight. So take one more shot and we'll call it a day. Can't have too much because we have to go to Midnight Mass tonight too," he said and poured her small amount of the whiskey. She took it and he took the glass and the bottle and put them back in the liquor cabinet.
"Ethan what did we get ourselves into? Or what did I get myself into?" He heard her say. He sighed and walked over to her and kneeled in front of her.
"I think that I haven't seen you this happy in four years. Yes you were making yourself happy on your own. Then, you and Lynn happened and I don't know what it is, but you started to become the Andy I met. You're smiling more, and your life seems to be going in the right direction. Finally. We've always talked about taking big risks. This may be one of them. Take this one day at a time and we'll go from there. You heard Kara, she wants to protect us from stuff like this.
She said something like this would happen. But I know you and I know how strong you are. You and Lynn will make this work. I have faith in both of you. She's not Nicole and you're not Alexa. Both of you have big hearts and you care about everyone around you. I know this is scary for you. You haven't been with some one since Nicole and this thing with Lynn, is exciting and new. But when I see you two together, you two look at each other like no one else. You look at her as if she was your the missing piece in your heart. She looks at you just the same.
With that being said, don't let these other people influence your relationship. The six of us are all in this together. We'll take as it comes, okay?"
Andy smiled and nodded, "I'm so happy you're my best friend" she said and he smiled and he gave her a hug, "I don't know what I would do without you," she said wiping her tears away.
"I could ask the same about you," he said.
"Now, come on let's hide these and get ready for the others." He helped her up and they started to clean up their mess. They took their gifts up to their rooms and sorted them out. They decided that they wouldn't change until it was close to leaving for Lynn's parents house. So they stayed in their basketball shorts and sleeveless shirts. To kill some time Andy suggested they do some workouts while they waited. Ethan laughed at her and told her that he would get some snacks ready instead. She shook her head and decided to do some stretches, sit ups, and push ups for about thirty minutes and then went to help Ethan.
She put on some Christmas music and they started to dance and sing in the kitchen. All the worries they had earlier were forgotten. Ethan was right, they would take it as it comes.
"Shit! We need to get Angel a copy of the key," Andy said.
She started to walk out of the kitchen but Ethan stopped her, "You stay, I'll go. You're better at making these things anyway," he said with a smile. He went up the stairs to change and Andy went back into the kitchen to finish up the snacks.
Ten minutes later Ethan came back down stairs dressed for the cold, "I'll be back," he called out as he walked out the door.
"Stay safe!" She yelled at him as she heard the door close. She turned up her music and started to sing along to her favorite version of "Santa Clause Is Coming To Town."
Then, she had an idea for tonight. She stopped the music playing on her phone and looked through her contacts and tapped on a name. After a couple of rings she heard, "Hello?"
"Hey Alex, it's Andy. Are you alone?"
"Hold on," he said. She could hear him say that he was going to the bathroom and after a couple of minutes she heard, "What's up?"
"How long does it take for you to learn a song?"
"Well it depends if I'm the lead or if I'm rhythm."
"I need rhythm. There's a song I wanna do tonight. But I need an extra person. I have a feeling Lynn is going to make me sing."
He chuckled, "Yup, she plans to put you on the spot. But it shouldn't take me too long."
"Is there ANY chance you can come over early and we could work on it?"
"I'm actually almost done with my gifts. I'll just tell them I'll head over early because I have to get a couple more things or something and that I'll meet them at your place. Give me an hour?"
"Sounds good. I'll see you then."
"Awesome, see ya." They both hung up
Tonight was going to be a good night.
**********************************************************************************
Alex and Andy were sitting in the living room of the town house and they were going through the song for about the sixth time. They both were helping each other on how they could make it sound better. It was getting close to the time for when the others would show up.
Ethan was setting up everything while they continued to play. After he came back with the spare key and said that it was mad house out there; he was surprised to see Alex sitting on the couch. Andy explained everything and Ethan joked about how he needed to freshen up. They laughed as he rushed upstairs and after five minutes came back down. They asked if he wanted to hear what they were working on and he nodded.
He liked it, but he said that Andy needed to be a bit softer with the vocals when it came to second chorus. She nodded and they tried it again and he told them it sounded better. Now they were doing a final run through and Ethan said that the last one sounded amazing.
They both smiled and thanked him. She looked at her watch and said that they needed to put the guitars away. She was lucky that she caught Alex before he left and asked him to bring an extra one because she didn't fully think it through.
The two rushed up the stairs and went into Andy's room and put the guitars in their cases.
"She's going to be so surprised when you go up there with me," she said with a small laugh as she closed one of the cases.
"She won't know what hit her." He said with a smile. After they put the guitars away they went back down stairs just as Ethan was opening the door. They saw Brian, Angel and Lynn walk in with bags and they went over to help.
"Geez, did you guys but the whole town?" Andy asked jokingly as she grabbed a couple of bags from Lynn then, gave her a kiss on the cheek. She led everyone into the living room and they all sat on the floor.
Earlier, Ethan and Andy moved the coffee table out of the way and pushed the couch back. They figured it would be easier that way. They did keep the TV on the movie channel. At one point in morning the two of them got distracted when 'The Boondock Saints' came on and they ended up watching most of it. They kept quoting the movie long after it was over and would laugh talking about their favorite parts.
"You guys are more than welcome to the snacks and drinks in the kitchen. Figured we were going to have a lot of food tonight so some snacks would tie us over until then," Ethan told them as he set some bags down next to Brian. Alex came walking out of the kitchen with a small plate of snacks and a bottle of Mountain Dew. Everyone stopped to look at him as he was eating.
He looked up and saw everyone staring at him, "What?" He asked and everyone just laughed. He shook his head and walked over to them and saw on the couch. Everyone was going through their bags and picking out what they wanted to wrap first.
"Just to warn you guys, my wrapping skills suck ass," Andy said as she grabbed an item from her bag.
"Well lucky for you, I'm pretty good at wrapping," Lynn told her and kissed her cheek.
"Good, because wait until you see the presents I already wrapped. So bad," she said with a small chuckle.
"Andy I tried making your coffee this morning and it wasn't the same." Alex said shaking his head.
"Trust me, I know. I tried to do it too, but nope, wasn't the same." Ethan told him as he was getting the wrapping paper ready.
"What's your secret?" Alex asked trying to get a piece of tape off of his fingers.
"Nothing really. Just put in the sugar first, then the honey, then the cinnamon, pour the coffee, and then add the powder creamer. Stir and serve. When you tried to make it what size spoon did you use for the cream and sugar?"
"What do you mean?"
"Like okay, did you use the adult spoon or the kid spoon? Don't ask why I'm asking like that." She said shaking her head.
"The adult spoon?" He said unsure.
"Try using the kid size spoon next time. Might work then."
"No, not true, I did that too and it still didn't taste same," Ethan said taping up his gift.
The three continued to talk about the coffee while Angel, Brian, and Lynn were talking about the text message. Again Brian was having trouble with the string ribbon and Angel couldn't help but laugh. Lynn caught a peak at the way Andy was wrapping her gifts and shook her head. She was right, her gift wrapping skill did suck ass.
They were enjoying their time together. Laughing, talking, joking, wrapping, and just being themselves. They were making fun of how Andy was wrapping her gifts and they all kept giving her helpful hints which she took gratefully. Brian was still trying to figure out the ribbons and wouldn't take advice from any one saying that he had everything under control.
It was almost seven and they had to be at Lynn's parents house around eight. Andy and Ethan thought that the four of them were going to head out so they could get ready, but Angel said that they brought their clothes with them. Just to make it easier and they could all go together.
"I still need to take a shower. I did a small workout earlier and I need to not smell like a gym," Andy said as she put a bow on her last gift.
"What did you do?" Brian asked as Angel was trying to help him untangle from the ribbons he manged to get wrapped around himself.
"Well since I can't really run in the snow because of my knee, I just did some stretches, push ups, and sit ups. Just so I don't get too lazy during this vacation. Also, thanks to you Brian, my stomach was messed up for a while after that pancake." She said pointing at him.
Lynn rubbed her back, "That's why you were so selective at lunch and dinner yesterday," and Andy looked at her and nodded.
"But you were fine at dinner the other night," Alex said finishing up his last gift.
"True, maybe because Lynn's mom is an amazing cook," She said looking at Lynn with a smile.
"How did it go with Kara?" Angel asked putting her wrapped gifts in her bags.
"Which time the first time or today?" Ethan asked getting up and started to clean up the mess. Andy got up as well.
"Both?" She asked and started to help clean up as well.
"Well the first time Andy got pissed off because she wants our home address. Today, she came and told us about the text message Lynn got. She told Andy to not let this kind of thing get to her. Also that whoever has Lynn's number is some one she's close to. All I can say is that it could be a person that has a new number and still has Lynn's." Ethan explained as he put some of the left over wrapping paper in a trash bag.
"All I can say is that there are going to be people out there that don't like who a famous person is going to date. Only because people they want to date that person. I mean, it happens. They're going to get upset and they're not going to like it, but they'll get over it. It happens to other people too. Like, okay, Ethan, remember when Clint started to date that one girl and like three other girls hated it because they wanted to be with him." Andy said tying up a trash bag.
"Oh my God dude, that was like the worst six months at work ever!" He said and he gathered up all the trash bags and put on his coat.
"Andy can I give you some advice?" Angel said coming up to her and putting a comforting hand on her arm.
"Sure."
"Brian and I have been together long before he was in PVRIS," she started to say and Andy nodded.
"At first it was hard, with him being on the road, and not being able to see him for months. I thought we were going to break up at one point. But I knew in my heart he would always come back to me. We talked every day and we video chatted when we could, and I knew everything was going to be okay. I kept my faith in him, and I support his dream. I stand by him no matter what. Some people say love isn't enough, but I disagree. If the love is strong enough it can overcome any obstcale."
"Thank you," Andy said giving her hand a gently squeeze. Lynn watched the exchange from the kitchen and couldn't help but smile. There was something about Andy that just made her feel like a whole new person. After her last relationship she wasn't sure if she would be able to have feelings for some one again. Then, Andy happened and she couldn't explain what she was feeling. All she knew was that every time she looked at her, every time she saw her smile, every time she felt her touch, and every time they kissed, she would get butterflies. Her heart would race, and she would feel as if she could do no wrong when she was around her.
Just being in her arms made her feel safe and warm. Ever since Charlotte, Andy was all she thought about. This was definitely a different feeling for her. A good different and she didn't want it to ever go away.
"You okay?" Ethan asked as he brushed off fresh snow from his jacket.
She smiled and nodded, "Yeah, I was just thinking about Andy," she said and he smiled.
"When are you not thinking about her?" He asked with a smirk and gently touched her arm as he passed her and walked into the kitchen to start cleaning up. Alex and Brian were in there talking already and started to help Ethan.
"Hey Ethan, you wanna take a shower first or me?" He heard Andy call from the living room.
"You go ahead, I'm cleaning the kitchen," he called back.
Lynn watched as Andy and Angel moved the coffee table back to its rightful spot, then Andy pushed the couch back to where it was before. She thanked Angel for the help and they both started to walk towards the kitchen. Angel and Lynn smiled at each other and Andy stopped in front of her.
They both didn't say a word as Andy just wrapped her arms around her. Lynn did the same and they stayed like that for a few minutes. Again, Ethan couldn't resist and pulled out his phone from his pocket and snapped a quick picture of the two. He sent it to Andy and went back to cleaning.
"I'll be right back, gonna take a shower and get ready," Andy said and kissed the top of Lynn's head. She felt her just nodded against her chest and she just smiled.
"In order for me to do that, you need to let go baby," Andy whispered as she felt her arms tighten around her.
"Just a few more minutes," Lynn said softly.
"Okay, few more minutes."
"Lynn we all still have to get ready too," Alex said. She let out a sigh and dropped her arms, letting go of Andy and she did the same but with a smile.
"Fine, if you must go," she said jokingly and waved her hand. Andy gave her a quick kiss and rushed up the stairs.
Lynn walked into the kitchen and started to help clean up. She looked up and saw four pairs of eyes looking at her and the four faces had smirks.
"Shut up," she said and they all laughed. They finished up the kitchen and Ethan told them they could pick a room to get ready in. As long as it wasn't his room or Andy's room since they had presents in there for them. Also he didn't want Lynn to see the two guitar cases in Andy's room.
He went upstairs to just as Andy was walking towards the bathroom with a towel and a couple articles of clothing.
"Hey did you find a church?" Ethan asked.
"Yeah, it's not too far from Lynn's parents house. It's like half a mile or so. Just gotta leave around eleven to at least get a seat."
He nodded and heard laughter come from the kitchen, "So how are we going to tell them that we are going to Midnight Mass?"
Andy shrugged, "I guess we just tell them. Just keep an eye on the time. I mean if they want to go with us they're more than welcome too. But I highly doubt it since they don't really follow a certain religion."
"I'm surprised she didn't ask about your FAITH tattoo." He said pointing at her right forearm. Where the world "FAITH" was tattooed on her in old English font.
"Or my ring," she said showing him her right ring finger which said, "Walk By Faith, Not By Sight"
"Or that cross on your neck," he said with a smirk pointing at her necklace which was a cross.
"I can't believe you just quoted their song," she said shaking her head and laughed. She was about to go into the bathroom when Alex came up to them.
"So I need to figure out how to get my guitars from your room without them knowing," he said looking downstairs.
Ethan smiled, "Come on I have an idea." He led him to Andy's room and just as she was about to turn to go into the bathroom; she saw Lynn at the bottom of the stairs looking up at her. She just winked and smiled and walked into the bathroom. She really needed to get her heart to stop racing every time she saw her.
******************************************************************************
Andy was standing in front of a full length mirror that was hanging in the closet. She was buttoning up her sleeve buttons on her red button down shirt. She looked in the mirror and started to adjust her shirt that was tucked into her black dress pants. She picked up a green tie that was hanging on the door handle and popped her collar and started the process of tying her tie.
Her hair was finally long enough on the top to have slicked over to the side and her sides were shaved to have an undercut haircut. She gave herself a once over and then grabbed her dress shoes and sat down on the bed and started to put them on.
Alex and Ethan were able to ge the guitars out of Andy's room while everyone was still in the kitchen. They snuck them out back and rushed to his car. They hurried back inside as if nothing ever happened. Alex told them that he had to get going to help set up the formal living room for them. But he really wanted to practice the song one more time. They gave him hugs and he left.
That's when Ethan heard Andy's voice telling him the shower was all his. He told them again that they were welcome to use any room to get ready besides his room and Andy's room. Again since they had the presents in their rooms. They all went upstairs and Ethan pointed out a couple of bedrooms for them to get ready in. They thanked him and they each choose a room to get ready.
Lynn walked in the direction of Andy's room and Brian and Angel smiled giving each other a knowing look. The closer she got to Andy's room she could hear music playing and her singing along. She took a peak inside and caught a glimpse of her putting on a tank top, before Andy fully put it on; for the first time she saw just how fit she was. She was mesmerized as she watched her starting to get dressed.
She couldn't help but lean against the door frame and just watch. She could watch her forever. But the moment ended all too soon when Angel gently touched her shoulder breaking her out of her daze.
"Come on, I'll help you with your make up," she said softly. Lynn just smiled and looked into Andy's room one last time. She was picking out her shirt for the night and that was the last thing Lynn saw before Angel led her to another room.
Andy finished tying up her shoes and walked back to the mirror to check and make sure she looked alright. She adjusted her black belt and then adjusted her shirt one more time. She ran her fingers through her hair to make sure the gel would hold and it was, for the moment. She walked over to the dresser and started to put on her watch.
"Aren't you right handed?" She heard a voice coming from her door way. She smiled as she saw Lynn wearing a maroon blouse and black dress pants. Her hair was pulled back into a braid and her face had a hint of make up.
Andy nodded still smiling, "I am." She finished putting on her watch and grabbed her wallet, keys and cell phone. She looked at all the bags and started to pick them up. Without a word Lynn started to help. They grabbed all of them but they left Ethan's bag since her and Ethan were going to do their Christmas tomorrow morning.
They met Angel downstairs and they smiled at her, "Geez did YOU buy the whole town?" She joked. Her hair was in soft ringlets, and she was wearing a simple floor length black dress. Andy assumed Brian would be wearing all black as well.
"Maybe," Andy said with a small smirk. Ethan came down the stairs with Brian behind him both also carrying bags. Just like Andy thought Brian was in a all black three piece suit. Ethan wore a blue button down dress shirt tucked into his black pants, and his black and white checkered Vans.
Andy leaned in towards Lynn and whispered, "You look beautiful." She looked up her with a blush and a smile. Andy kissed her cheek and started to help her with her jacket just as Brian was doing with Angel. Ethan started to load up the car and was confused when he didn't see another car outside.
"Oh, David dropped us off. He said he was heading into town anyway and it would be easier for us to ride with you guys back. Hence, the bringing of clothes," Angel explained when she saw the look of confusion on his face.
"Maybe this would be a good time to see who gets the front seat," Andy said looking at Ethan and Lynn.
"Okay, well the that night of the Christmas party I made an exception. Plus I had to drive Trey's car." Ethan said giving Lynn one of his goofy grins.
"So you wouldn't mind if Lynn got the front seat?" Andy said looking at Ethan. He still had his goofy grin on his face and walked out the door.
"Ethan?" Andy asked as she was putting on her jacket. He didn't look back he just kept walking. She gave Brian the key to the town house, "Lock it up. Ethan!" She said as she rushed out with her bags. The three looked at each other and grabbed their bags and started to follow behind Andy.
"Ethan!" She yelled out into the snow.
****************************************************************************
"Are you happy?" Andy said to Ethan who was in the front seat.
"Yes I am!" He said in a sassy tone.
"I'm sorry babe," She said looking in the rear view mirror.
Lynn just waved her off, "He was right he let me in the front seat when we were in your hometown."
She winked at her and changed the radio station, "Oh my God! Finally!" She said and turned up the music a little bit.
"Oh by the way here's your key back," Brian said and Ethan reached around and took it from him. He put it on his key chain and then rolled his eyes when he heard the music that Andy finally picked.
He looked at her and she could feel his eyes on her, "Seriously?"
"Oh, come on, I've been without country music since we left. Plus this song mentions our hometown. Just wait."
The three in the back watched the exchange and Angel heard Andy sing for the first time.
"She's pretty good."
"Lynn's gonna make her sing tonight after we're done," Brian told her in a whisper.
"Okay you had your fun. Time to change it."
"Ethan! The driver picks the music."
"Tell that to your dad!"
"Parents are different they have a higher standard!"
"Andrea!" He warned.
"Ethan!" She warned back.
He changed the radio station and Andy went back to the country song. They went back a forth a few more times until a song came on and they looked at each other and started to smile and sing along at the top of their lungs. They forgot all about the three passengers in the back who were trying to hide their laughter.
They continued to sing along to the song as Andy pulled up to the house. She parked in the same spot she did the other night. Before she got out she looked at the driveway and saw that there were a few more cars than last time. On the other side of the street there were a few more cars too. She started to get nervous again. She felt a hand on her shoulder and she didn't have to guess who it was. She brought her hand up to hers and she felt a gentle squeeze.
They all got out of the car and gathered all their bags. Andy made sure the Jeep was locked and they started to walk up to the door. Tim and Cathy greeted them again and helped them with their bags.
After getting settled, Tim offered Andy and Ethan some of the Scotch he still had and they both declined saying they had to be up really early in the morning. When in truth they were going to a Midnight Mass at a Catholic church just down the street. Andy also told him that she had to drive tonight as well.
He smile and put his hand on her shoulder, "You never cease to impress me," he said and directed them towards the formal living room. She saw a percussion box, a baby grand piano, and two acoustic guitars. She saw so many new faces that she was getting even more nervous.
Lynn came up to her and took her hand and smiled, "Come on, I'll introduce you to everyone," she said and started to lead her around. Alex was doing the same with Ethan. They were getting asked all the usual questions. Where they're from, what they did for work, why was Andy wearing a brace. How did they meet.
Next thing Andy knew she found her self in the kitchen wishing she had that glass of Scotch. She looked around and found a punch bowl but decided not drink it. She finally saw a few bottles of water and grabbed one. It wasn't long until Ethan joined her and did the same thing.
"My throat is getting so dry from answering the same questions over and over again," he said opening a bottle of water and taking a few sips.
Andy couldn't help but agree, "I knew I should've taken some Advil."
"What time is it?"
"Ten minutes til nine," Andy said taking a few more sips of her water.
"I can't believe I'm going to say this, but I can't wait until Midnight Mass," he said looking at his phone, then putting it back in his back pocket.
Andy was just about to tell him something when David walked in, "Hey guys come on! They're about to do a few songs," he said grabbing their hands and leading them out of the kitchen. He made sure Andy and Ethan were at the front and she made eye contact with Lynn and winked at her.
She smiled and blushed. She really didn't know why she always blushed when she would wink at her. She thought she would get over this stage but she didn't. She cleared her throat and looked around the room, "Thank you everyone for being here. Um, this year is pretty special because two people came into our lives and we all kind of clicked rather quickly. So we wanted to say to them, thank you for making the trip up here, and putting up with us for the two months while we were finishing up our tour. We talked about it and we want to dedicate a couple of these song to you. So Ethan and Andy, Merry Christmas and I hope your stay in Boston is as magical as the both of you are." Everyone clapped as Ethan and Andy were trying to hide their blushing cheeks.
"Okay so here we go," Lynn said with a smile and she started to play they keyboard.
**************************************************************************
Alexa and Cacie walked into the house they could hear music playing and Alexa knew exactly what was going on. Tim was walking out of the kitchen with Cathy and saw the two women at the door.
"Did you tell Lynn?" Cathy said in a whisper to her husband.
"I forgot," he confessed as they got closer to them.
"Well, you're going to explain this to her, not me." She said quickly as she walked up to them.
"Alexa, it's so good to see you," she said giving her a quick hug. Tim did the same and they both hugged Cacie as well.
"Come on, they're about to finish up and then Lynn said she had a surprise for everyone." He said and led them into the formal living room as everyone clapped again.
"Okay this will be our final song of the night and then, I have a surprise for some one," when Lynn said that Alex looked over at Ethan and Andy giving them a knowing smile.
"So for this song we normally would do it stripped down, but on this tour we did it with the full arrangement, only because it sounded better. Then, we brought it back. Before, there wasn't a person in mind when I would sing this song in the last couple of years. Now in the last couple of months, some one has been on my mind. This is called, 'You and I.'" She looked right at Andy and smiled.
Alexa could see Lynn smiling at some one but she couldn't make out who. She just assumed it was a family member. She didn't know that Andy was there.
"You and I.
I know it's warmer where you are
And it's safer by your side
But right now I can't be what you want
Just give it time
Andy and Ethan couldn't help but sing along softly. They heard this song so many times but this time for Andy it felt different.
And if you and I
Can make it through the night
And if you and I
Can keep our love alive, we'll find
Singing these words felt different for Lynn. She didn't know why, but she thought about Andy with every word. Especially when they were in Europe.
We can meet in the middle
Bodies and souls collide
Dance in the moonlight
When all the stars align
For you and I, for you and I, oh
Lynn and Andy's eyes met and they didn't want to take their eyes off of each other. It was one of those moments where they just knew. Andy could help but give Lynn her half smile and she had to look away to hide her blush.
I know it's cold when we're apart
And I hate to feel this die
But you can't give me what I want
Just give it time
Alexa started to slowly lead Cacie towards the front and every time she would try to get closer she was stopped by some one and a small conversation would strike up. It was then Kara noticed Alexa and made a beeline for her. This was something that was unexpected. Right before Lynn started to introduce Andy to everyone she brought all six of them together, and told her that she hasn't found any one yet and suggested for Lynn to change her number. To change it as soon as possible and they all agreed. But seeing Alexa here now, she really didn't want a scene to happen.
And if you and I
Can make it through the night
And if you and I
Can keep our love alive, we'll find
Andy checked her watch and saw that it was nine forty five. She looked at Ethan and mouthed the time. He just nodded and took out his phone and started to take a small video. He smiled as he got all three of them and then panned over to Andy who was softly singing along and looking at Lynn.
We can meet in the middle
Bodies and souls collide
Dance in the moonlight
When all the stars align
For you and I, for you and I, oh
"What are you doing here?" Kara asked steeping in front of Alexa.
"Tim invited us. I couldn't say no," she said.
"You stay away from her. You stay away. It's bad enough you're here already!" She said trying not to raise her voice.
"Kara we used to be friends, don't be like this."
"Key words 'used to be.'" With that Kara made her way through the crowd and found Andy and Ethan.
But for now we stay so far
'Til our lonely limbs collide
I can't keep you in these arms
So I keep you in my mind
"Tim, what are we going to do?" Cathy said after she saw the exchange between Alexa and Kara.
"I'll handle it. Right now look at our girl and how happy she is." They both looked at Lynn and they could tell she was looking at Andy from time to time while singing the song.
But for now we stay so far
'Til our lonely limbs collide
I can't keep you in these arms
So I keep you in my mind
"Alexa is here, do not turn around, do not look for her," Kara said standing next to Andy. She could tell Andy tensed up, "Just relax. Turns out Tim invited her. I'll talk to him. But the two of you stay away."
Andy slowly took a deep breath and then leaned over and told Ethan. She told him not to look or turn around. He just nodded and Andy checked her watch again. This time the checking of her watch didn't go unnoticed by Lynn.
Reaching out, can’t feel you now
Can we meet in the middle?
Bodies and souls collide
Dance in the moonlight
When all the stars align
For you and I, for you and I, oh
(Song and Lyrics by PVRIS)
Everyone clapped and they stood up and put their arms around each other and thanked everyone. They did a little bow and Alex and Brian walked away leaving Lynn by herself.
"Andy come on up here," she said holding her hand out for Andy to take. She looked a little surprised and walked up to her and took her hand. Alexa saw this and couldn't help but think that Andy cleaned up nicely.
"I know after we are done some of you come up and sing a song or two. But tonight if you guys don't mind, I would like for you to hear Andy sing. Then after, since Andy is away from her family she has this tradition. That she and her family open up one gift on Christmas Eve. Would that be okay with everyone?"
Everyone clapped and there were soft cheers. Lynn put her arm around her waist and kissed Andy's cheek, "So who wants to hear Andy sing?" The room cheered a little louder and Andy kissed Lynn's temple.
"The floor is yours," she told her and gave her a quick kiss on the lips. Alex walked up and started to put a strap on one of the guitars. Lynn and Brian looked confused when he handed her the guitar with the strap. Then he sat down and they both started to tune the guitars to where they wanted them to be.
He gave her a thumbs up and then she nodded. She strummed the guitar and took in a deep breath. She looked around and smiled, "Um, I kinda had a feeling Lynn would do this, so I called Alex earlier to help me with this song. So to Lynn and also to Brian uh I guess a surprise is in order," she said and she got a few chuckles out of it.
"Uh, I would like to thank Tim, Cathy, and David for welcoming Ethan and I into your lovely home and also with open arms. Also to Brian Sr., Hannah, Robert, and Lisa for also welcoming Ethan and I with such warmness. I've been a fan of PVRIS since I first saw them back home opening up for another band. It was then I knew I had to see them again. So, over the summer I found out they weren't coming back to Norfolk, but they were going to be in Charlotte.
Soon as I found that out I bought the meet and greet tickets and next thing I knew I was a babbling idiot in front of them." Again she received some chuckles.
"Then, Ethan won the raffle to hang out with them, and we spent the first few hours of my birthday getting to know them. That night I will never forget. Then, they came to my hometown and off to Europe they went. I never thought in a million years I would be friends with one of my favorite bands. Let alone have strong feelings for the lead singer." A few people said "Awww" and Alexa rolled her eyes. She started to strum her guitar, "I wanted to find the perfect song to describe everything that I have been feeling for the last couple of months. When I heard this one the other night I knew it was the perfect one. So this is one of Lynn's Christmas presents and I hope y'all enjoy."
She cleared her throat and then nodded towards Alex and they both smiled at each other and they both started to play the melody.
Is this the end of the moment or just a beautiful unfolding
Of a love that will never be or maybe be
Everything that I never thought could happen or ever come to pass and I wonder
If maybe, maybe I could be all you ever dreamed, cause you are
Lynn couldn't help but smile when she heard the lyrics Andy was singing. Angel came up to and put her arm around her and smiled, "I think she's a keeper," she whispered and she couldn't help but agree.
Beautiful inside, so lovely and I can't see why I'd do anything without you, you are
And when I'm not with you, I know that it's true
That I'd rather be anywhere but here without you
Andy didn't want to take her eyes off Lynn during this song. Everything she was feeling was in this song. From the melody to the lyrics, just everything.
Is this a natural feeling or is it just me bleeding
All my thoughts and dreams in hope that you will be with me or
Is this a moment to remember or just a cold day in December, I wonder
If maybe, maybe I could be all you ever dreamed cause you are
"Wow she's really good," Cacie whispered to Alexa. Even though she wanted to disagree with her she couldn't help but think that she was right.
Beautiful inside, so lovely and I can't see why I'd do anything without you, you are
And when I'm not with you, I know that it's true
That I'd rather be anywhere but here without you
Brian looked at one of his best friends and put his arm around her. He could see a small tear escape from her eye, "You okay?" He asked taking out his handkerchief and gave to her.
She smiled and sniffled, "Yeah, it's just she's just so amazing," she said as she gently wiped her eyes.
Is this the end of the moment or just a beautiful unfolding of a love that will never be for you and me, cause you are......
Andy took a step closer to Lynn and smiled. She wasn't really good with expressing herself through words unless they were written down or explained in a song; and this was the perfect way to express how she was feeling about Lynn.
You're beautiful inside, you're so lovely and I can't see why I'd do anything without you, you are, and when I'm not with you, I know that it's true
That I'd rather be anywhere but here without you"
(Song and Lyrics by SafetySuit)
Both Alex and Andy stopped playing their guitars as Andy sang the last chorus of the song. When she finished singing she was caught off guard when Lynn went up to her and kissed her deeply. There was a loud applause and everyone clapped and cheered louder when Lynn and Andy kissed.
Alexa looked around and couldn't help but think that she made the mistake of saying yes to coming here tonight. She just wanted to see how Lynn was doing. By the looks of it she had truly moved on and for some reason that bothered her and she didn't know why. She had to talk to Lynn and she had to talk to her tonight.
*********************************************************************************
"Alright who hasn't opened their gift yet?" Cathy asked looking around. Lynn, Brian, Alex, and Angel were the only ones that didn't receive one.
"I thought Ethan and Andy got you guys something," She said with a confused look.
Just then Andy and Ethan walked into the room, "Hey sorry we couldn't seem to find them," Ethan said with a small smile. Andy gave Lynn, and Brian theirs, while Ethan gave Alex and Angel theirs and then stood in front of everyone.
"We also have some to announce after you open them," Andy said.
"Go ahead," Ethan nodded and the two watched as they opened up their gifts. Once they all were opened they each had a charm bracelet and attached to each on was a key. They looked confused and Andy smiled.
"Ethan and I are moving from Virginia to Georgia. My Uncle has given us positions as general mangers of his new restaurant. These keys for you guys to come and go as you please to our new house. Angel I'm sorry your charm bracelet is different from the other three. We had to find one last minute for you," Andy said.
"Wait you're moving?" Alex asked.
"Once we get back we are packing up our apartment and making the drive down. But like Andy said you guys are more than welcome to come and go as you please." Brian and Angel came up to both of them and congratulated them on the promotions. Alex and Lynn looked at each other then back at Ethan and Andy.
Brian and Angel stepped aside and the other two walked up to them. Andy couldn't tell if she was happy or upset. This is what they were worried about their reaction. After a few more moments Lynn smiled and put her arms around her and pulled her close.
"I'm so proud of you," she whispered and when she pulled away she gave her a soft kiss. Alex looked at Ethan not knowing what to say.
He did just smiled and gave Ethan a lingering hug. He pulled away and smiled even bigger, "I can't believe this."
Ethan smiled at him and winked, "You two okay? You seem a little upset." He said and out of the corner of his eye he saw Andy check his watch and then he felt her tap him on the arm. They had to leave.
This didn't go unnoticed by Lynn, "What's going on?" She asked and Andy looked at her.
"I have this other tradition in my family that we go to Midnight Mass at a Catholic church. Normally Ethan and I go to a more diverse gay friendly Christian church. But growing up my family and I always go. I've kept up with it ever since and I don't plan on stopping now."
Alexa couldn't help but smirk when she overheard the conversation. It felt as if everyone was trying to keep her and Cacie away from Lynn. But she was determined to talk to her before she left.
Lynn looked at Andy and smiled, "You and your traditions," she touched her cheek.
"Look, I know y'all don't really believe so you don't have to come if you don't want to. But Ethan and I have to go in a few minutes to get a seat. If not we're going to be standing and I can't really stand for long."
Lynn nodded, "Which church?"
"Um the one up the road St. Matthew's I think it's called," She said.
"I know it. Every Sunday growing up we couldn't go anywhere until about two in the afternoon because of the traffic," she gave a little chuckle.
"I didn't know that you believed," she added and Andy nodded.
"All my life," she unbuttoned her sleeve button and rolled up her sleeve and showed her the "FAITH" tattoo on her arm.
"Sometimes I need a reminder," she said softly and Lynn gently touched her arm. They both felt something when they touched. It was the same feeling they felt that night on the bus, only this time it was stronger.
"Andy we have to go," Ethan said softly coming up to her giving her, her jacket. Andy nodded and Lynn took her hand in hers and entwined their fingers and they started to walk towards the front door. Tim, Cathy, and David were standing there talking to Ethan.
"You guys are more than welcome to come," Ethan said as he put on his jacket.
"We're not really church people," David said with a smile and gave him a hug.
"It's nice that you keep up with your family's traditions," Cathy said to Andy giving her a hug.
"Also, thank you two for that wonderful snow globe," Tim said giving Andy a hug as well.
"And thank you for the hoodie," David said with a smile and gave her a hug as well. She put on her jacket and looked at Lynn. She kissed her forehead.
"Thank you for tonight. Thank you for the necklace," Andy said taking the small rectangular box from her pocket. Inside was a sliver chain necklace with a small key. Lynn was wearing a necklace with a small heart that had a key hole.
"Thank you for the bracelet and the key. I can't wait to see your new house and meet your family face to face." They wrapped their arms around each other and stayed like that for a few moments.
Cathy and Tim were watching the exchange and couldn't help but smile. Alexa was also watching what was going on and she rolled her eyes and walked into the kitchen.
They pulled away from each other and they both leaned in and gave each other a soft kiss.
"I don't think I'll ever get used to this," Lynn whispered with a smile against Andy's lips. All Andy could do was nod. She would always be too scared to say anything because her mind would be going a mile a minute when their lips touched.
"I'll see you in the morning," Andy kissed her forehead, "What time should we be over?"
"How does eight sound?"
She nodded and took her hand and kissed the back of it, "Sounds good. Good night and sweet dreams beautiful." She kissed her forehead one more time.
"Good night," she whispered and Andy turned towards the door and started to walk away. She looked back at Lynn, gave her a smile and wink. As usual she blushed and smiled. Once Andy left she walked down the hallway and was met with her parents.
"Honey, I have something to tell you," Tim said looking worried.
"What is it?"
Just then Alexa came out of the kitchen with a small smile, "Hey you."
Lynn started to back up. This wasn't happening, this couldn't be happening. Alex was looking through his phone and wasn't paying attention when he bumped into Lynn.
"Oh shit, I'm sorry," He said and then looked at her face. He looked at where she was looking and he stood in front of her.
"Okay guys Angel and I are calling it a night," Brian said walking up to them with Angel's hand in his. They looked at her their faces and looked in the same direction. Brian and Angel did the same thing Alex did, they stood in front of Lynn as if to be her shield.
Cacie came walking in from the downstairs bathroom, "Hey babe are you ready to go?"
Before anyone could react they heard the front door slam and Lynn was gone.
*******************************************************************
Andy was looking around the church and saw a lot of people still trying to make their way in. Once they left the party they drove the half mile to the church and went they parked she texted Lynn saying that her phone was going to be off for about an hour or so. They walked in and they were glad to see that not many people were there yet and they found a decent seat. They didn't want to sit too close or too far.
"How are you going to kneel?" Ethan whispered pointing to her brace.
"I'm just gonna stretch it out and put my butt on the pew." She whispered back as she pulled one of the books from the back of the pew in front of her and started to look through it until she came to the hymn number in the book.
After about ten more minutes of waiting the service started and everyone stood up and started to sing the hymn. The priest and the alter boys were walking down the main aisle singing along. The hymn finished and he started to talk. It was the mostly the same thing that Andy was used to growing up. Bowing of the head and saying a little prayer, then taking a seat. The readings were going on and more hymns and once again they were standing.
Andy was singing along when she felt some one close to her. She was singing along to the hymn as she moved closer to Ethan to make room. Then she felt some one gently take her arm and she looked and saw hazel eyes looking back at her.
She stopped singing and put the book down.
"What are you doing here?" Andy whispered.
"Can I stay with you tonight?" Andy looked at her and saw that she was scared about something.
All she did was nod, "Yeah, yeah of course." She put her arm around her and pulled her close. Lynn closed her eyes for a moment. Just being in her arms made everything better.
They sat down and Andy kept her arm around her. Ethan looked over and saw Lynn and looked at Andy with a confused look. She shook her head and gently shrugged, "We'll talk about it later," she whispered.
"So this is Midnight Mass huh?" Lynn whispered and Andy smiled. It was officially Christmas and in the morning they would be waking up in each other's arms.
