Chapter 8: Game Day Part 2: Football, A Night Out
"They're here!" Alex said looking out the window.
"Okay, pull out couch is set and her favorite video game is cued up. We have her books and snacks ready. Pillows and blankets for her to be comfortable. Finally, a stack of DVDs on stand by in case she wants to watch one." Brittany said straightening out the blanket on the pull out couch.
"Uh oh." Alex said looking at his phone.
"What's wrong?"
"Wendy said Andy has barely said a word since they left. She said that Andy doesn't want to be around people right now. Chris is going to explain everything. We better go to the back."
Brittany nodded and they both rushed to the backyard. Alex explained everything to everyone and they nodded.
"Okay, one sec, let me move all of these shoes." Ethan said holding the door open. When the path way was clear Andy was able to pass through. Using her crutches to help her stand.
"I didn't brush my teeth." She said in a monotone.
"I'll got get your toothbrush and toothpaste and meet you at the downstairs bathroom." Wendy said and waited until Andy was fully inside the house.
Chris closed the door and rubbed his face in his hands. He watched Ethan guide Andy into the bathroom and he closed the door. He asked if she was okay and she gave an answer back. Wendy came down the stairs and went to the bathroom. She knocked on the door and opened it slightly. After giving her big sister the toothbrush and toothpaste the door slammed shut.
"I'll get everyone together and I'll watch the kids. She'll be fine around the kids. She'll have on a brave face for them. But as for everyone else, I'm not sure how she's going to act." Wendy said with a sigh.
"I'll stay here and let her get settled." Ethan put a hand on her shoulder and gave her a gentle squeeze. They heard the knob to the bathroom door rattle and Ethan rushed over to it. Wendy and Chris started towards the backyard.
Chris stood on the deck and Wendy gathered everyone. She stayed behind when they approached the deck. He gestured for them to sit at the table. They all settled around the table and Chris stood at the head of it. He gave them a small smile and took in a deep breath. He let it out and began to tell them everything.
"The good news is nothing is torn to the point where she needs surgery again. The bad news is that she has a grade two MCL sprain. Along with a bone bruise that didn't heal right. She's to start physical therapy as soon as possible. Serenity she told me to tell you that music video has to be postponed until she's well again. She was hoping you could also handle all the gallery stuff."
Serenity nodded, "Already planned on it. I'll call the crew and my boss tonight and let them know."
"Thank you. She still wants to go to the football game. After the game, Veronica and I will take the kids for a couple of days. While the rest of you and Andy stay in Atlanta. She has to stay in her immobilizer for about a week or so. The doctor prescribed her painkillers. But she refused, the doctor insisted anyway. Per Dr. Samson we are to hide them from her." He sighed and looked at each of them.
"She's barely said a word since we left the hospital. I know my niece and she hates being a burden to everyone. But I think of this a sign for her to finally slow down for once."
"That's what we thought too." Alex said and everyone agreed.
"Give her some time guys. I'll take the kids tonight. Shey and Hayley could you two help Wendy get their things? Leslie will drop them off at the stadium tomorrow and I'll pick them up." Chris said looking at them. They nodded and stood up. Chris held up his hands and stopped everyone before they left the table.
"I want to make one thing clear to all of you. I already talked to Wendy and Ethan about this. Andy is NOT to touch those painkillers. Even if she asks she is NOT to touch them. Do I make myself clear?!"
They all nodded looking surprised at how he said that statement.
He cleared his throat, "She's going to be withdrawn for a while. The only people she's going to want to be around is Ethan and Wendy. With the football game tomorrow she's going to be fine. BUT she'll go back to being withdrawn. Just bear with her. She'll get past this. Just let her be and give her time. For right now, do not ask her if she's okay. Do not ask her how she's feeling. Do not ask her if she needs anything. Understood?"
Again everyone nodded.
"She's going to want to do things herself. Let her until she finally asks for help. Just let her come to you. Let her play her video games. Let her watch her movies. Let her rest. Ethan has all her medicines. Wendy called Kevin and Susan, but she told them to stay in Canada and they will see them in two weeks. Knowing Andrea she's going to want to be able to be better by her birthday. Don't crowd her or she'll lose her temper."
Wendy came out of the house saying that the kids were ready to go. They were with Andy asking her if she's okay. Chris nodded and looked at the group again, "Let her sulk for a little while longer. Call me if you need anything." With that he left the group to their thoughts.
Wendy walked into the house with Chris. To help him with the kids.
Justin sighed, "At least nothing's torn. But her mental state is another thing."
"We just have to follow what Chris said and everything will be okay. Lynn, we should check on dinner. Maybe Andy will want to eat soon." Brittany said and the two stood up and went into the house.
"I know my dad said she just wants to be around Ethan and Wendy, but I'm gonna go in there and sit with her." Addy said getting up and walked into the house.
He reached the living room and saw playing Andy a video game. She didn't acknowledge him when he came into the room. He didn't mind it, after what his dad said. He sat down in the armchair and just watched the TV screen. He didn't have to say a word. He just wanted to let her know he was there. Just like she was there for him time and time again.
Brandon, Alex, and Justin joined them as well. They also didn't say a word. They each found a spot somewhere in the living room and just watched. Wendy and Ethan were upstairs packing for everyone. Since Andy still wanted to go to the football game they decided to pack.
"Think all of us are going to fit in the living room tonight?" Ethan said with a small chuckle.
"Oh, I'm sure Brittany will figure it all out. She always seems to." Wendy replied with a smile.
Ethan nodded and he took a look at the backpacks and duffle bags, "Okay the guys and Andy's stuff is all ready to go. Minus Andy's toothbrush and toothpaste. We know why."
"I'm done with our stuff." Wendy sighed and sat down at the foot of the bed. "We can't let her sink back into it Ethan."
He sat next to her and put his arm around her. She leaned in and he kissed her forehead, "We won't. In case you haven't noticed everyone in this house has put a lot on hold since she came back. We know she puts all of us before her. She's gonna feel like a burden. She's gonna lash out."
"Yeah, I noticed the alarm clock in when I came up here to pack." Wendy said pointing at the broken alarm clock on the floor.
They heard a small knock at the door and they looked up and saw Shey standing in the doorway, "Hey guys, Brittany says dinner is almost ready. We're all gonna eat in the living room with Andy. She asked me to come get you both."
They two friends nodded and stood up, "Do you think she's gonna eat?" Shey asked.
"I don't know. If anyone can get her to eat it's her little sister." Ethan said with a smile and they headed down the stairs. They saw the guys and Andy in the living room. Wendy went up to Andy and put a hand on her shoulder. She kneeled down next to her and gave her a small smile when she turned towards her.
"Hey, dinner's almost ready. We're gonna eat in here. Wanna me to pop in a movie?"
Andy just nodded and turned her attention back to the TV. Using the controller to turn off the gaming system.
"What movie do you want to watch?"
"I don't care." Andy said tossing the controller to the side.
Wendy stood up and went over to the stack of DVDs by the TV stand and started to look through them. After looking through for a few minutes she smiled and found the one she thought would cheer up Andy.
She turned on the DVD player and put in the DVD. She found the remote and changed it until the DVD VIDEO logo came on. She kept it there.
"Okay guys, let's go help Brittany. No, no, Andy stop. You stay right there." She said pointing at Andy when she went to get up.
"Am I not allowed to go to the bathroom?" She asked sarcastically.
"Oh, I'm sorry. Here let me help." She made a move towards her but Andy held up her hand.
"It's not my first time on crutches." Andy said in an angry tone. With a painful grunt she slowly started to get up. But she fell back down, "GOD DAMN IT!" She yelled.
Ethan told everyone in the kitchen to just stay put and he rushed out. He saw Wendy looking at her sister knowing she felt helpless because Andy didn't want any help. Wendy looked at him and she shook her head. They went through this before. When Andy tore her ACL.
They watched as Andy struggled to get up again. This time she did and she grabbed her crutches. She started to slowly make her way towards the bathroom. They jumped when they heard the door slam.
Wendy shook her head and put her hands on her hips, "It's four years ago all over again. Like you said she's lashing out."
Ethan rubbed his face in his hands and nodded, "Yeah, the thing is, we were the only ones that were around it. These guys," he said pointing towards the kitchen as he took a step towards Wendy, "Weren't, they're not used to this. This time she's surrounded by more of her friends. Not like last time where it was just you, me, and your parents."
"Chris talked to them, but I don't know if they're ready for this." Wendy said shaking her head.
"Maybe we should warn them one more time." Ethan suggested.
They heard the bathroom door open and Wendy spoke softly, "I'll warn them, try to get her comfortable." She walked passed him and went into the kitchen to talk to everyone.
Ethan waited for Andy. She turned the corner and he smiled at her. He knew she wouldn't smile back, but he just wanted to let her know he was there. He watched her closely as she slowly got settled back on the pull out bed. He heard her let out a soft painful moan. He knew not to ask if she needed anything because he knew the answer. She looked up at him and she let out a sob. She broke, that's all he needed to rush over to her and wrap his arms around his best friend.
Back in the kitchen Wendy started to explain what Andy was going through.
"Okay guys I've been through this before with my sister. So has Ethan. Uncle Chris already said she's going to be withdrawn, but what he didn't mention was that she lashes out. Ethan and I went through it for close to a year. Her depression hit full force, she felt useless. She lashed out to the point where she hit Ethan and came close to hitting me. But we didn't give up on her. We helped her through it. So whatever she says, whatever she does do NOT take it personally. She's just so used to be feeling needed that when she feels useless she feels horrible about it.
"So don't let it get to any of you. This is who she is. We all know how she's always on the go and always has to be doing something. We just have to be patient. We've all seen her cry, we've all seen her break down. But this is different. This is her feeling like a burden to everyone. Just do things without question. She's gonna put on a face tomorrow for the game. Just let her. Don't let her get to you." Wendy finished and they all nodded. Ethan came into the kitchen and sighed.
"Um, I know we want to sit and eat dinner with her. But she asked if we could all eat in the dining room and she stays in the living room." He told them and Brittany handed him an empty plate.
"Did she say why?" Justin asked.
"She just wants to be alone for a bit. She needs to process everything. She said she'll be okay tomorrow. But as for the night out she's gonna wanna stay in the hotel room, because she doesn't want to hold everyone back."
"Are you kidding me?! She's still doing that?!" Kayla said with a shake of her head.
"Doing what?" Justin asked.
"She's still putting us first. She doesn't want to hold us back. No, fuck that, after the game we're all going out for a drink. I don't care where. Don't tell Andy. We're fucking going."
"I agree with Kayla, we're taking her out. We'll find a place to have a drink." Shey said and everyone nodded. Serenity came inside from the back deck hanging up her phone.
"Hey guys, after dinner I gotta head to Seattle. Since Andy can't come along I'm gonna get ahead start on things. Don't worry, I won't call or text Andy at all. I'm meeting Erika tomorrow and we'll have everything sorted out. I also called the crew, they told me to let them know when Andy's ready to shoot." She told everyone and Brandon handed her an empty plate.
"Well, I'm glad you came. Say bye to Andy before you leave though. I'll give you a ride back to your hotel and then to the airport." He said smiling.
"Thank you, don't have to worry about the hotel. I had my assistant go and check me out and sent everything to Seattle an hour ago. Figured I could get ahead start." She smiled at him.
"Okay, well I guess we'll set the table and get started." Brittany said.
"Wait, I thought we were gonna sit with Andy." Serenity said looking confused. Hayley went up to her and started to explain everything.
Wendy and Lynn started to set the dining room table and Lynn peaked over at Andy in the living room. She stopped setting the table and walked into the living room and kneeled down next to her. Wendy watched the two. She didn't know what was being said. She saw Lynn put her hand on the back of Andy's head and gently started to run her fingers through her hair. She saw Andy nod and Lynn stood up. She kissed the top of Andy's head and went over to Wendy.
"Andy changed her mind." She said with a smile and walked back into the kitchen. Wendy followed.
"Wait what did you say to her?" Wendy asked.
"I said she may not want to be around us, but we want to be around her. Plus we can't watch the movie if we're in the dining room."
"Okay, are we eating with Andy or are we eating in the dining room?" Brittany asked.
Lynn turned to her and smiled, "We're eating with Andy."
"So back to the original plan then. Fill up, get drinks, Wendy or Ethan bring Andy's bowl." Brittany said.
"Why is Andy getting a bowl and not a plate?" Alex asked.
"She prefers it mostly. She likes to mix everything together. So layers, which is what I did for her. Mashed potatoes, gravy, cuts of pork chops, but she'll take her steamed broccoli on the side, or on top. I think today, she'll take it on the top."
"This all looks amazing. Thank you Brittany." Ethan said with a smile.
"Oh, don't thank me Lynn, and Hayley, helped out too." She said winking at the two women.
"Well you three did an amazing job. I'm sure we're all going to love as well as Andy." Justin said smiling at the three of them.
"Wait, did you season the mashed potatoes like Andy?" Ethan asked and Brittany nodded.
"Oh I did. I even made sure I did the 'Andy method.'" She said with a giggle.
"What's the Andy Method?" Serenity asked.
"While the potatoes are boiling, season the water. Then when they're ready to get mashed up, put in the seasonings mix it up, then do it two more times. On the third time add a new seasoning. She has a thing with three's, not sure what it is. She has to do most things that way." Brittany explained.
"Okay, I think we're all set." Alex said looking around the kitchen.
"Who is gonna clean up? Cause it's not gonna be the three of us." Brittany said looking at each of them.
"Me, Justin, and Addy will do it." Brandon said with a smile.
"Thanks Brandon." Both Justin and Addy said sarcastically.
"Any time." Brandon smirked.
"Okay, Andy's all set and ready for us." Ethan said smiling. They all made their way to the living room and found a spot somewhere. It seemed they all made it a point to have Lynn next to Andy.
When everyone was settled Wendy took the remote and hit play. The movie logo came up and she saw Andy smile. She knew she made the right choice for her sister. On the menu she turned on the subtitles since she knew Andy would want them on, and she hit play.
"Okay y'all please try to hold your questions til the end." Wendy said.
They all smiled and started to watch the movie while eating dinner. No one said a word. Besides Andy singing softly along with the movie. They all looked at each other and smiled. The next few days they were going to make Andy feel cared for. No matter what.
********************************************************************************
"THAT WAS A FUCKING FACE MASK REF!" Andy yelled. "FOR FUCK SAKE YOU WERE RIGHT THERE!"
"Oh boy! Here we go and it just started." Ethan said with a shake of his head.
"ANDY! The kids!" Wendy said pointing at the younger ones.
Andy turned to her, "I'm sorry! I'm so sorry! But look I don't think they heard me."
Wendy turned to the kids and saw they were too involved in their coloring books to even notice Andy's outburst.
This time it was Andy, Addy, Kayla, and Brittany that were involved with the game. Brandon sat back and watched his girlfriend get excited. He smiled and shook his head. He knew she would get like this. It happened when football season came around.
"Brandon how do you do it with Brittany when she gets like this?" Lynn asked.
Brando shrugged, "I don't know. I mean, I kinda get the same way when hockey season comes around."
"Lynn gets crazy when hockey comes around." Alex said with a smile, taking a sip of his drink.
"The only times Andy watches hockey, is the Stanley Cup finals and the Winter Olympics. That's it." Ethan said and Wendy nodded.
"Well, with Andy moving to Boston, maybe she'll become a Bruins fan." Justin said smiling.
"We'll see." Lynn smiled.
"When is she moving up there?" Hayley asked.
"After her mom's birthday. She planned to buy the townhouse but Serenity beat her to it." Lynn explained taking a small bite of her food. Everyone looked at her as if she was a totally stranger. She looked at them, "What?"
"How did you know that?" Alex asked.
"Let's just have that as another hint Alex." She told him with a wink. Alex was about to say something but his phone started to ring. He pulled it out of his pocket and smiled.
"Guys! It's Brian, he's video chatting!" He answered it and he saw Brian and Angel's face pop up on his phone! He turned his phone around and everyone said Hi. Besides Brittany, Addy, Kayla, and Andy.
"Hey, why is Andy on crutches?" Angel asked.
"She has a grade two MCL sprain, and bone bruise. She had bad fall a few months ago. Didn't really take care of it. She pushed herself a little too hard these last couple of weeks and the pain came back." Hayley explained.
"Hayley! Thought that was you! Is she okay?" Brian asked.
"For the most part. She just hates that she can't be useful." Alex told him.
"You tell her from us that she needs to take it easy!" Angel said and everyone nodded.
"Oh we know." Justin said with a small laugh.
The four started to yell again about another call.
"Where are you guys?" Brian asked.
"We're in a private party box. Andy's favorite college football team is playing. She hooked us up with food and everything. Enough about that how's your honeymoon?" Lynn said smiling.
"It's amazing! But we can't wait to come home and see all of you. We miss you! We said no phones and to be off the grid, but we just wanted to check in. Saw some of your posts on social media. How was the party?" Brian told them and then asked.
"It was great! Andy went all out. Then, her ex girlfriend showed up." Shey said rolling her eyes.
"Wait, the ones from...?" Angel asked and they shook their heads.
"It was Ashley the one from Michigan." Wendy told them.
"Oh! Really?! What's she doing there?" Angel asked.
"Turns out Chris hired her as the new district manager. But he didn't know who she was at the time. Until it was too late." Brandon said.
"When do you guys come home?" Alex asked.
"In a few days. Then, we head to Virginia for Andy's birthday. She's been posting these cryptic things about how she's ready for the next step in her life. She can't wait to see what the future holds with the love of her life. Do you guys know anything about that?" Brian asked.
"Well we just found out she's moving to Boston. As for the love of her life, we're just as confused. She is wearing a ring, but she won't tell us." Justin said.
"Lynn! Seriously! What is going on?!" Angel asked.
Lynn just smiled and shrugged, "Just check your mail when you get home." She said with a knowing smile.
They heard yelling again and they all shook their heads.
"We just wanted to check in and say hi! We miss you guys and we can't wait to see you all!" Brian told them.
"Bye guys have fun!" Alex said smiling. They all waved bye and Alex's phone went blank.
"Well, that was a surprise." Ethan said smiling.
"Yeah, it's good to hear from them. Glad they're having a good time." Lynn smiled and then looked up at the TV screen. "Guys! Andy's on TV again!"
"There's Andrea Hill enjoying the game. Great photographer and musician. Looks like she's on crutches. Hope you feel better soon Andrea! She's going to be opening up a couple of galleries on the west coast."
"Hope she'll open one here in Georgia, Greg. Very talented individual. Time out is over and Georgia has the ball on the forty two yard line. Third and four to go."
"So guys, have you listened to any of Andy's songs lately? I can't help but feel like they're telling a story or something." Alex said taking a sip of his drink.
"How do you mean?" Justin asked.
Alex cleared his throat, "Well her first few songs were about someone cheating on her and trying to find love again. Then kind of transitioned to being able to find herself, then her last few songs are about finding love again."
"Well she is a storyteller. Always has been. In high school we had theatre class together and she was always writing in this notebook. Every time our teacher told us to write a paper on something for an assignment. She would let me use the computer first. Or she would go to the library and wouldn't come home until it closed. She never got lower than a B." Wendy smiled at the memories of her sister always writing.
"Even towards the end of the school year most of us didn't really bring anything, but she always has this red notebook, with a ballpoint pen. Every notebook she's ever had has been red. If she doesn't have a ball point pen she won't write. She got so mad once she tore her room apart trying to find one. She finally caved and found a pencil and started writing on a sheet of paper. Her room was always full of crumpled up papers, pens, and pencils. Drove our parents crazy."
Ethan nodded, "I know the feeling. When we first moved in together, she had a lot of notebooks all over the apartment. All red ones too. I came home one day after work and she was on the couch with a stacks of them. I asked what she was doing. She said she started a story and couldn't remember which notebook it was in because she had an idea. But lately I haven't seen any notebooks."
"Maybe because everything is on her laptop." Hayley said.
"Her red laptop?" Wendy asked.
"Well a new red laptop I guess. Her old one crapped out on her and she bought a new one when we were at Red Rocks."
"Thank God she got rid of that one! She bought that off Nicole when they broke up for the second time. She had that thing for YEARS! I told her to get rid of it but she said that it works fine and when it craps out she'll get a new one. Can't tell you how many batteries, and AC adapters she bought just to keep it running." Ethan said shaking his head.
"Um, guys, I just realized something." Wendy said looking up from her phone.
"What?" Shey asked.
"Next month is postseason for baseball."
They all looked at each other and slowly turned to look at Andy. They knew what was coming. Postseason for baseball and with football season is up and running. No doubt Andy would be keeping up with her favorite teams and checking scores as well as stats. They turned back to each other and smiled.
"Well, we need to get ahead start this year. How was she with you when October came around?" Alex asked Hayley and her eyes widened.
"Honestly she was terrible. Talking about how if this team doesn't go, then that means she'll cheer for another team. I could hear her cheer quietly on the bus. One night I just couldn't sleep and she was watching a live stream of a baseball game on her laptop. I asked if I could watch. She smiled and she hooked it up to the TV. Every time a strike was thrown she would pump her fist and say "YES!" but quietly. I asked why did she love baseball so much even if her favorite team wasn't in the postseason.
She shrugged and said that it didn't matter if her favorite team was in it or not, just the love of the game. It was the first sport she ever learned and she just couldn't get enough of it."
"RUN! GO! GO! GO! GO! RUN BABY! GO! YES! TOUCHDOWN!!!!" Andy yelled, "LET'S GO BABY! WOO!" She gave her cousins high fives and smiled. "Wooooo! Let's go! That's what I'm talking about!"
"Thirty eight to fourteen not even half time yet! Let's go boys!" Kayla cheered.
Everyone else chuckled and shook their heads.
"So where are we going after this?" Ethan asked.
"Oh, I think it's called 'Athens' or something like that. Kayla and Brittany say it's a gay club, with open mic. So maybe we could get Andy to sing tonight." Brandon said.
"Think she'll be up for it?" Alex asked and they all looked between Wendy and Ethan. They looked at each other and shrugged.
"Hey Andy did you take your stomach medicine today?" Ethan asked.
"Yeah, and at half time I gotta take my other medicine. NO! DAMN IT! WHY?! HE WAS DOUBLE TEAMED! COME ON!"
"Shit, means she can't have a drink tonight." Ethan sighed.
"Let me call her doctor and see if she can have a drink tonight. Maybe she can skip her medicine today. Or maybe she'll forget to take it." Wendy said and she dialed a number. She got up and walked away from the group.
"She never really drank when she was on tour with us. If she did it was only one drink. Then, she would call it a night." Hayley said taking a sip of her drink.
"Same with us. When we would go out she would always just have one and say she was done for the night. I think the only time I've seen her drunk was when she video called me a couple of years ago before Daniel's..." Lynn trailed off and everyone nodded knowing what she was going to say next.
"Oh I've seen her drunk. Trust me it's really funny!" Ethan said with a laugh.
"We've seen the videos, but I personally wanna see it happen with my own eyes." Alex smiled. Wendy came back smiling.
"Good news, her doctor said that she would be fine to not take her medicine tonight, but to not over do it and at least two of us to be sober to keep an eye on her."
"I'll be sober anyone else?" Brandon asked.
"I'll do it. I kinda wanna see this happen." Lynn said smiling.
"Half time! Bathroom break!" Brittany said. The four cousins started to make their way towards the door. Addy made sure Andy had a clear way through. He also stood behind her as she slowly made her way up the steps towards the door.
"We got another hour guys. Don't hold your breath." Ethan said with a sigh.
"While we got a second let's go over the plan one more time." Shey said.
"Chris is gonna come and pick up the kids in about thirty minutes. After the game Ethan's gonna follow us with Wendy and Andy. We end up at Athens. Kayla and Brittany asked for the VIP lounge they have. Told them it was Andy's birthday. So anyway, we go have a good time. Maybe get Andy to sing." Justin said smiling.
"Guys, Andy really deserves this. Like REALLY does. I know I can't explain a lot right now, but those six months when her and I were gone, she was taking care of me." Lynn started to say and everyone was now on the edge of their seats.
"What do you mean?" Justin asked.
But before Lynn could start the door opened and Addy was making sure Andy had a clear path. He told her to stop apologizing for being slow. Kayla and Brittany came behind her and they were talking about the game. They made it back to their original spots and Brittany went to go refill their drinks.
She stopped by Brandon and gave him a small kiss, then continued to her task. She skillfully carried the four cups and returned to her seat. She passed them out and the four started to talk football again just as the marching band was getting off the field.
"Lynn what did you mean she was taking care of you?" Alex asked.
Lynn looked over at Andy to make sure she wasn't paying attention. She moved in closer to everyone and they did the same.
"After that camp out we had before she left, Andy and I just took off. She knew I needed to get away from everything. I was still dealing with a lot of stress from the tour and wasn't able to decompress from everything. She told me that we were just gonna disappear for a while. So we did. I'm not gonna lie the first couple of weeks I didn't want to leave the suite we were in.
Andy knew I just needed time to be alone. She would leave in the morning and come back that evening. After those couple of weeks, I woke up with her and joined her on her adventures. She never asked me what I was going through. She just kept trying to put a smile on my face. Just trying to make me happy. She was so patient with me. She just made sure I was comfortable.
She would let me make the first move. She would let me make the choices. Even if it was something she didn't want to do, she did it anyway. During those first two weeks she didn't even sleep in the same bed. She would sleep on the couch. To be honest I was glad she did, because I just didn't want to be around her, or anyone." She turned and looked at Andy. She watched as she gave her cousins high fives cheering again.
She smiled and turned her attention back to the group, "Those six months were amazing. I came back feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. I always wondered if she hadn't taken us away what would have happened to me. If it wasn't for her my mental state would have been something else. That's as much as I'm going to tell you for now. Everything else will come into light soon enough."
"Where did you both go?" Ethan asked.
Lynn shook her head, "You'll find out soon." She gave him a wink and stood up. They watched her walk to the small buffet to fill up her cup. She sat back down just as the four cousins cheered again.
"You keep saying that. I think you two got married." Justin said.
Alex laughed, "Oh come on! Like they would get married without us. Plus they both act like they're broken up. They put on a show for Andy's ex. I mean they're not married. Andy's just wearing a ring for the hell of it. Lynn does it all the time."
"Plus, Andy's mom would be so upset too. I mean we've all met her. She's ready for grandchildren and if Andy or Wendy got married without her there she would throw a huge fit." Justin added.
Before Lynn could say something else the door opened and there stood Chris, he smiled and at everyone. Wendy and Lynn stood up and started to gather the kids. Wendy walked Trevor over to Brittany and she turned in her chair and smiled at her son. She gave him a big hug and a kiss and told him to be good. She got up and walked him to the door. She said she would see him in a couple of days.
Wendy told her younger siblings to say bye to Andy. They rushed up to her and she smiled giving them each a kiss on their foreheads and hugs as well. She told them to be good and to listen to Uncle Chris and not give him a hard time. They nodded and she gave them one more hug and kiss. Andy watched as Wendy and Lynn left the room with them along with Chris.
She turned back to the game and smiled when her team got a first down. The game as almost over and her team as winning. She thought today was going to be a bad day but it turned out just fine. Now she just couldn't wait to get back to the hotel and rest up. She had to let her knee breathe for a little bit. She didn't want to be a burden to anyone and she told them that they all should just go and have a drink.
But for now she was enjoying her time with everyone.

"Okay you good?" Ethan asked after Andy was settled into the front seat she nodded and he smiled. He smiled and closed the passenger door and walked over to the driver side. The Bulldogs ended up winning the game and that made Andy and her cousins really happy.
Ethan, Andy, and Wendy rode in her truck and the others rode in Brittany's SUV. Ethan waited until he saw Brittany pull in front of him and he started to follow her. He heard velcro being undone and he quickly glanced at Andy's knee.
"What are you doing?"
Andy let out a painfully sigh, "Dude, it's been in this thing for about eight hours. I need to let my knee breath for a bit."
Wendy watched as Andy slowly bent her knee. She knew she was in pain but Andy didn't show it. After watching Andy bend her knee a few times she let it go.
"How does it feel?"
"Like a dull sore I can't get rid of. I thought I was going to be fine. I guess Hayley was right. I pushed myself too hard."
"She said that when you fell you did some exercises, but then you stopped."
Andy nodded, "Yeah, the pain was gone. So I figured it was over. I guess it wasn't."
"Why didn't you go to physical therapy?"
Andy shrugged, "I kept moving from state to state, wouldn't have been able to keep appointments. So was going to get the time off and then go. Guess I just waited too long."
"Yeah, ya think?" Ethan said sarcastically.
"Okay, okay, I'm sorry, I'll take better care of myself these next coming months. By the way, camp out still on?"
"You're not gonna leave this time right?"
"No, I promise. Wendy, Shey, and Hayley should come too."
"Wait really?" Wendy said with a smile.
"Yeah, the more the merrier. Just gotta run it by everyone."
"We're gonna need another tent."
Andy smiled and looked at her phone as it went off. She sent a reply back and smiled to herself. She hated keeping this from her friends and most of her family. But when everyone goes home they would finally know why.
Ethan parked the truck next to Brittany's SUV and Andy looked out the window, "What's going on?"
"Well, you and Addy kind of stressed us out during the baseball game and we wanted to get a drink that night, but plans changed. So we're getting a drink now." Ethan said smiling turning off the truck and getting out.
Andy started to put her immobilizer on and let out a small gasp.
"You okay?" Wendy asked as she opened the passenger door.
"Yeah, it's just the rod in this thing goes right over the tender spot. I just keep forgetting about it." She finally got the straps on and she grabbed the handle and lifted herself up. Wendy had her crutches ready. With a small limp Andy gave her little sister a smile and she settled on her crutches.
Brittany and Kayla led the group into the club and smiled at the bartender. She waved back and told them that the lounge was ready for them. She came out from around the bar and started to lead them through the club.
They came up to a sectioned off area, but could still see the dance floor and the stage. It was still a little early and the bar had just opened. The bartender said she could take their drink orders for now until some else would. Once they all put in their drink orders she smiled and told them she would be right back.
"Andy? Hayley?" A voice said and they all turned around to see a girl with bright pink hair. Hayley smiled and stood up from her chair and rushed up to her to give her a hug.
"Who's that?" Ethan asked.
"Oh, that's Bernie. She and Hayley are like best friends. I took her place on Paramore's tour, because she had to do another photo shoot for another band. She gave me a quick lesson on how Hayley wanted everything and then she was off to do her thing." Andy explained.
Hayley brought Bernie to Andy and she smiled. Bernie smiled and leaned down to give her a hug. When they let go Bernie shook her head.
"Hayley did say you were non stop. I didn't believe until she sent me a video of you going all over one of the venues to get the shots." Bernie said with a smile.
"Well, I'm a go getter I guess. Let me introduce you to everyone." Andy smiled and started to introduce everybody to Bernie. She smiled really big when she shook Lynn's hand.
"I've heard SO MUCH about you! I can't believe I'm actually meeting you right now! Even Heather talks about you."
Lynn looked shocked, "You know Heather?"
Bernie nodded, "Her and I go way back. She's my mentor. Taught me everything I know."
The bartender came back and gave everyone their drinks. Brittany asked for Bernie to join them but she politely declined saying that she was there to take pictures of the open mic night. She had to scout for new talent. She winked at Andy telling her she was hoping she would sing tonight. She said it was nice to meet everyone and she left them to go and get ready.
"The photography world must be really small if everyone knows everyone." Brittany said smiling.
Andy nodded, "Yeah, it's true. I'll meet a photographer and they'll say they know someone who knows someone. I've actually met two photographers that went on tour with Alex, Lynn, Justin, and Brian."
Justin looked up at her, "Oh yeah? Who?"
"Kelly, and Matty. I think you told Ethan and I about him once." Andy said smiling. Alex, Justin, and Lynn smiled at each other.
"Oh yeah! Wasn't he the one that couldn't get back into the venue or something?" Ethan said with a small laugh and Alex nodded.
"How is Matty doing?" Lynn asked.
Andy shrugged, "He's on tour with Mars. What more could he ask for?"
"That was his dream. To go on tour with them one day. I'm so happy for him! How's Kelly doing?" Alex asked.
"She misses you guys, waiting for your next tour. Wanting to know if her and I could split it."
"I don't see why not." Justin said smiling.
They continued to talk amongst themselves they didn't notice the club starting to get a little more crowded. Ethan grabbed the small menu and suggested they should get some food soon. Andy shook her head and smiled saying that he always thought with his stomach.
A new person came by them and he smiled. He told them that he would be taking care of them the rest of the night and asked if they wanted any refills. Ethan asked for a round of shots. When Brandon and Lynn looked at him he waved them off. The young man smiled and said he would be right back.
"You don't have to take the shots. Some one will just take two. One of those someones is my best friend." He smirked looking at his best friend.
"Dude, I really can't be plastered on crutches."
"Andy, we got you. Plus it seems you haven't had a good night out in a while." Shey said with a wink.
They heard the DJ over the microphone saying that they would start open mic in a couple of hours. But right now he was going to play a few songs to get everyone in the dancing groove. The crowd cheered and he started to play a song. Andy and Lynn looked at each other with wide eyes.
The song wasn't supposed to be released just yet and it was really early for it to be heard. Andy looked around the table hoping no one would notice it was their voices. Andy watched Kayla and Brittany get up and leave the area. They gave each other knowing smiles as they made their way through the crowd to sign Andy up for the open mic.
Andy pulled out her phone and sent a quick text to Lynn. It wasn't long until she heard her phone go off. She replied and looked around the table again. Everyone was laughing and having a good time. They didn't notice the song. The two let out a sigh of relief when the song changed. Kayla and Brittany came back with smiles on their faces.
"What are you two up to?" Andy asked.
They both shook their heads, "Nothing to worry about." Brittany said taking a sip of her drink. The young man came back and handed out the shots for everyone. He said he would be back to get them refills as well. Ethan asked him if he could bring them two of each appetizer just so they could put something in their stomachs for now.
He smiled and told him he would put everything in right away. They all thanked him and Alex stood up with a smile and holding his shot glass up.
"I just wanted to say Happy Early Birthday to Andy. Even though you're injured, you're back with us. You mean the world to everyone here. Even though Brian and Angel aren't here, I know I speak for them when I say that you have touched our lives. You may not think so but you have. We've all come together because of you. We love you. We care about you. We wouldn't trade you for anything. To Andy!"
"To Andy!" Everyone echoed and they clinked their shot glasses together. Brandon gave his to Andy and Lynn gave hers to Shey. Everyone else took their shots.
Andy's eyes widened when she finished hers, "You asshole! You didn't?"
"Aaahh, oh I did bitch!" Ethan said with a smirk and gave her a pat on the back.
"What did you do Ethan?" Brandon asked.
"Fireball." Was all Ethan said.
"If Andy starts dancing on the table I have to get a video and send it to Brian!" Justin said with a smile. The young man came by and started to hand out their drinks. When he reached Andy his eyes widened.
"Oh my Cher! You're Andrea!" He said with a smile. "I'm a huge fan! I love your photographs and your songs are so pure! I can't believe it's you! Your music has helped me through a lot. I was going through a bad break up and I read in an article that you were cheated on in three different relationships, but you kept going. You pushed past a lot of things. I know you said you didn't want to do an album, but I hope you do."
"What's your name?" Andy asked with a smile.
"Vincent." He said with a small blush.
"Pull up a chair." She smiled and he did sitting next to her. "Now tell me what do you want to be?"
"An artist." He said smiling.
She chuckled, "Okay, but that could mean different things. In today's world artist can branch off into many types of things. We all have some sort of creativity in us. We just have to find it. So let me ask you again. What do you want to be?"
He thought for a moment looking down at his hands shyly. Andy smiled and put her hand over his, "How old are you?"
"Twenty two."
Andy nodded, "So you still have time to figure out what you want to do. Are you in school?" He nodded.
"Okay what are you majoring in?"
He sighed, "Art and Literature. I just find words and images amazing. Something about making words come to life is just an incredible thing."
"I know there's places out there that have poetry readings and some one painting at the same time. Maybe you should check those out."
"How do you do it? How do you wake up every morning ready to take on the day?"
Andy smiled and shook her head. She looked around at the table and then turned back to Vincent, "You see these people I'm here with?" He nodded.
"They motivate me every day. Now, there are times where I still feel all alone, but I know in the end my friends are there for me. So is my family. It took me a while to realize it. See, I've been the type to care for my friends and make sure they're okay. I never thought about myself. I always kept them in mind. I always put their well being first. I never put me first. But I'm just now doing that. " She gave his hand a gently squeeze.
"I suffer from depression. But I never show it. I put on this mask every day, but it's slowly coming off. We all go through hard times, but it gets better. It always gets better. Be happy with yourself before you can be happy with someone else. It's gonna sound cliche but keep following your dreams. Keep your head up and don't let anyone bring you down."
Vincent smiled and wiped a tear from his cheek, "I knew I looked up to you for a reason. You're so inspirational. I can't believe I'm serving you drinks. I'm so embarrassed."
"Hey, I was a server once too." She smiled and he looked at her with wide eyes.
"You were?"
Andy nodded, "Yeah, at this little mom and pop shop. I was also a busser at one point. I worked in the restaurant business since I was about twenty one. Held almost every job there is to hold in one. Was almost a general manager but a better opportunity came my way."
"Before you leave could I get a picture with you, and possibly your autograph?"
"Of course. But," She leaned in closer, "They plan to get me a little drunk I can tell because this is like my fourth drink and second shot. So how about that picture now, just in case I forget."
Vincent smiled and took out his phone. He held it out and snapped a picture of the two of them. "Thank you so much! If there's anything you need, ANYTHING at all let me know. I better check on your food. Thank you for the talk. You've opened my eyes to a lot."
"You're welcome. Just remember it gets better." She held her arms out and he smiled. He leaned in and they hugged. He stood up and left the table. Alex smiled at her. He stood up from his seat and sat down next to Andy.
"You see? You touch people's lives. Even strangers. You are enough. You're enough for everyone."
"I gotta be honest, I didn't think I was. I'm just going out there and doing what I love to do. I've always wanted to change the world with my words. It's the big dream."
"Well you're slowly doing that." Alex smiled and gave her hand a gently squeeze.
"Andy! Come on!" Brittany said grabbing her crutches.
"What's going on?"
"Just get up! Come on! The DJ called your name!" Kayla said gently helping Andy up from her seat. She took her crutches and started to follow the two of them.
Everyone got up and smiled. It was time to hear Andy sing again. Ethan and Justin got ahead of her and started to make a way through the crowd. She finally reached the stage and Kayla was setting up the stool and the microphone for her.
Brittany was there to help her get settled and when she was comfortable Kayla gave her an acoustic guitar and smiled at her cousin. The two cousins got off the stage and Andy started to tune the guitar. She smiled at the crowd.
"Hey everyone, so this was really unexpected. Thank you to my cousins for springing this one me. I was not prepared for this." She chuckled and some of the crowd did as well.
"My name is Andrea, but everyone calls me Andy. As you can see I'm injured. I do have to say thank you to my family and friends over there for putting this much needed night out together. Oh by the way how about them Bulldogs!" She said and the crowd cheered!
She cheered with them and strummed the guitar and smiled, "Okay looks like we got it. So since this is a spur of the moment thing, if y'all don't mind I would like to do a cover of a Paramore song. When I first heard this song I was on tour with them, and it pulled me in. I never told them, but this song got me through a really dark time." Andy cleared her throat.
"I was away from everyone I cared about, everyone I love. I was also getting hate mail here and there about how I was living my life. But I knew I could get through it. I am who I am and no one can change that." The crowd applauded, and cheered.
"Before I get into this song. I just wanna let everyone know that, when you feel like there's no hope, keep going, it's going to get better. It's okay to not be okay. If you don't want to reach out because you're scared, that's okay, but just so you know, there is someone out there that is willing to listen. Just open up. It's taken me awhile to do that, but I'm slowly learning."
She strummed the guitar and smiled, "Okay enough talk, let's get to it. This is song is called '26' by Paramore."
Hayley's eyes went wide and Ethan looked at her, "You okay?"
Hayley nodded, "I just didn't think this song had an impact on her."
"Man, you really know how to get someone down
Everything was fine until you came around
I've been chasing after dreamers in the clouds
After all wasn't I the one who said
To keep your feet on the ground?
Man, you really brought me back down
Hayley listened as Andy sang the song that brought herself to tears during a show. She had no idea just how much of an impact this song had on her friend.
Hold on to hope if you got it
Don't let it go for nobody
They say that dreaming is free
But I wouldn't care what it cost me
Lynn took Hayley's hand in hers and gave her a small squeeze, "Lynn I'm so sorry. I didn't know she was going through so much." Lynn smiled at her and put her arm around her pulling her close.
"I don't think any of us knew." She said quietly.
You got me tied up but I stay close to the window
And I talk to myself about the places that I used to go
I'm hoping someday maybe I'll just float away
And I'll forget every cynical thing you say
When you gonna hear me out
Man, you really bring me down
Ethan and Wendy looked at each other and Ethan spoke first, "Did you know she felt like this?"
Wendy shook her head, "Did you?"
Ethan shook his head, "How long do you think she's been feeling like this"
"I think maybe we need to have a heart to heart at some point."
Hold on to hope if you got it
Don't let it go for nobody
They say that dreaming is free
But I wouldn't care what it cost me
Brandon put his arm around Brittany and kissed her forehead, "Are you okay?"
Brittany nodded and wiped a tear from her eye, "I just didn't know how much she keeps in."
"I think we all didn't know."
Reality will break your heart
Survival will not be the hardest part
It's keeping all your hopes alive
When all the rest of you has died
So let it break your heart
And hold on to hope if you got it
Don't let it go for nobody
"Addy," Kayla said softly. Her brother just took her hand in his and nodded.
"I know, I know." He told her.
Shey, Alex and Justin looked at each other.
"I knew she was dealing with a lot but I didn't know it was this much." Shey said. Justin took her hand in his and gave it a small squeeze.
"I told her she should open up to us. She just doesn't know how." Alex said.
"Maybe, this time she will." Justin said and the two nodded.
Hold on to hope if you got it
Don't let it go for nobody
They say that dreaming is free
I wouldn't care what it cost me"
(Song and Lyrics By Paramore)
The crowd cheered and Andy smiled. She said thank you to the crowd. Brittany rushed up with Andy's crutches. Kayla was right behind her to help Andy with the guitar. The crowd kept cheering until Andy was safely off the stage.
They all made their way back to their table and when the all settled they looked at Andy. She finally looked up at them and gave them a confused smile.
"What? Oh God what? Did something happen? What?"
Ethan took her hand in his, "We were just wondering, how long have you been dealing with everything?"
Andy sighed, "I don't know where to start."
Justin put a hand on her shoulder, "Just tell us from the beginning."
Andy nodded and let go of Ethan's hand. She rubbed her face and then let out a sigh. She had to tell them sooner or later. She just didn't think she would bring it up now. She wanted to wait. She looked at all of them and smiled.
"Guys, come on, we're here to have a good time. So let's have a good time. We'll talk about everything later."
"Is it true what you told Vincent? About you having depression?" Alex asked.
"Can't we just not do this here. I thought we were having a good time. Can we talk when we get back home? It'll be easier. I don't want to be a downer. Not after what I just performed. So guys for me please, can we just let it go and talk about it later?"
"You're right, we're here to have a good time. So let's order some shots and keep the party going." Shey said with a smile.
"I agree with Shey, let's have some fun. We have to leave in a couple of weeks, before we get back to chaos of Andy's birthday party. Plus there's still a lot to do before we go back to Virginia." Wendy said.
"Okay, so let's get Andy wasted, and then tomorrow we'll talk more about everything." Addy said.
Just then Vincent and a couple of other servers came with their food. He smiled and started to put dishes on the table.
"Vincent! Another round, and a round of shots!" Justin said and Vincent smiled.
"Now, let's get this party started!" Addy said looking around and everyone nodded.
Andy said back in her chair and she looked around at the table. Her phone went off and she looked at the text message. She sent a quick reply back. She wanted to tell them just how much she was suffering but she didn't want to burden them. Maybe tomorrow she would be able to. But for now she would just enjoy being around the people she held close.
