"I see you closing down,
But I won't give up now.
I'm gonna fight
For you tonight,
Close your eyes."

Carrie kept glancing over at Kelly nervously on the ride home. She was curled up in the passenger seat, her knees folded to her chest, her arms wrapped tightly around her legs as she looked out the window. Her cheeks were shining from the silent tears that were still falling, but she hadn't said a thing since they'd left the hospital.
"Kell..." Carrie said cautiously as she put the car in park in the driveway. "We're at your house."
She didn't reply as she straightened up in the seat, undoing her seat belt.
"Um, Jason and Ashley don't seem to be back yet. You want me to come in with you?"
She watched as Kelly shrugged before getting out of the car.
Carrie got out as well, following her to the front door. She took the house keys from her after realizing that her hands were shaking too badly to unlock the door. Carrie unlocked it for her, stepping aside to let her in. She closed the door behind them, relocking it before following Kelly to her bedroom.
"Thanks," Kelly said softly, her voice completely void of any emotion as she sat on the edge of the bed, her hands clasped between her knees.
"Ke--" Carrie began.
"I'll see you later," Kelly gave her a small smile, her request for Carrie to leave quite clear from her tone of finality.
Carrie nodded, turning to walk out of the room. She paused to look back as her hand touched the door knob. Kelly's head was hanging, her shoulder's shaking either from tears being shed or the effort of holding them in, Carrie couldn't tell from where she was standing.
Kelly didn't hear Carrie's footsteps returning, but she felt her soft hands on her arms lifting her up into a standing position, trying to pull her into a hug. She pushed the country singer's hands off of her, turning to walk away. Carrie quickly reached out, spinning her around and pulling her back in a tight embrace. She cradled the back of Kelly's head with her hand as she held her close. She felt the Texan breaking down in her arms--her tears burning hot against her neck, her hands clinging to her shirt.
"No," Kelly cried against her skin.
"Shh, baby," Carrie soothed, hugging her as tightly as possible.
"It's not fair."
"I know," Carrie assured her, kissing her forehead firmly.
"Care..." she heard the Texan's voice crack, and she felt her heart rip in two.
"I'm right here," Carrie assured her. "Just like I promised."
She couldn't make out the words that were coming out of Kelly's mouth anymore as she sobbed harder, so she just did the only thing she could, and she continued to hold her close. She had to be honest--she didn't think she had that many tears in her. Up until that night, she was so used to seeing the shorter girl fight off any type of emotion, or at the very most merely tear up. This...this had to be too much, and she had no clue as to how to stop it.
"Why...why don't you go take a hot shower," Carrie offered in her ear. "It might help you relax enough to sleep."
She felt Kelly cling to her tighter.
"Come on; I'll stay with you" Carrie said, clumsily guiding the both of them to the bathroom, closing the door behind her. She somehow managed to get Kelly let go of her long enough to be able to turn the hot water on in the shower.
She turned back to Kelly with a soft, almost apologetic look as she reached for the hem of the shorter girl's shirt. Kelly's arms raised, allowing her to slide it off.
Carrie couldn't help but wrap her arms around her once more at the lost look in her eyes as tears continued to stream down her cheeks.
"Don't leave me alone," she heard Kelly beg.
"I won't," Carrie promised, pulling back to look her in the eyes. She helped her with her capris, trying to be as modest as possible while helping her into the shower. She closed the frosted glass doors, leaving her with only a silhouette of the other singer as she felt her own eyes starting to sting with the tears she had refused to shed in front of her.
Kelly's tears fell harder, the shower walls making the sounds of her cries echo.
"Kell?" Carrie asked worriedly, walking back to the shower. "You ok?" She immediately cursed herself for asking possibly the dumbest question ever. She noticed the shower door slide open partially, and Kelly's hand came out, taking Carrie's arm, and tugging her inside.
Carrie slid the door open enough to be able to walk into the shower before re-closing it. She felt Kelly fold into her, and she wrapped her arms around her again, not caring that her clothes were getting completely soaked.
She made out a "Why?" as Kelly buried her face in Carrie's now thoroughly wet shirt, whispering something hoarsely.
"I don't know," Carrie replied honestly.
Kelly cried harder.
"What am I supposed to say to make this better?" Carrie asked.
"Just don't leave me," Kelly pleaded.
Carrie nodded, pressing them together as the warm water fell over them.

Carrie tucked the fluffy towel around Kelly in an attempt to keep her warm as she, herself, discarded her own wet clothes before doing the same. Kelly's tears had lessened, but Carrie couldn't help but think, as she guided them out of the bathroom, that it was more from dehydration than her actually feeling better.
"Will you lay with me?" she heard Kelly's soft voice from beside her.
"Yea, of course," Carrie replied gently, turning to her dresser. "Let me just grab something for us to put on."
"No," Kelly protested.
Carrie turned to find her bloodshot eyes gazing down at the floor nervously.
"Kell..." Carrie sighed, knowing that that was really the last thing she and Kelly needed to be doing.
But Kelly shook her head. "I just...I just need to be close to you," she explained.
Carrie's heart melted as she nodded. She made her way over to the bed, climbing in with the Texan, both of their towels discarded as they slid under the covers. Kelly immediately reached out, already missing the warmth of her body. Carrie pulled her close, fighting down the blush that was rising. It took her a few moments to get used to their current position, but she finally felt herself starting to relax. She realized why Kelly had suggested it. It didn't get more basic or beautiful than this: the two of them laying together, holding each other, absolutely nothing in between them.
Carrie kissed the top of her head at the feeling of Kelly's tears once more falling onto her skin, her warm breath against her neck.
"It's gonna be ok," Carrie said softly. "I know that sounds like complete bull and is probably the last thing you want to hear right now, but it's the truth."
"I wish it would've been me," Kelly confessed.
"Sweetie, no," Carrie frowned, pushing away so she could look her in the eye. "Why would you say that?"
"Because she didn't do anything to deserve it," Kelly cried.
"And you did?"
"She's just...she's just a baby."
"She was six," Carrie reminded gently.
"She was innocent."
Carrie nodded, "And she was also a sweetheart."
Kelly cried harder, and Carrie brought a hand up, attempting to wipe some of the tears away.
"She's in a better place now," Carrie assured her.
"She didn't deserve to die," she repeated.
"Kell, she was suffering," Carrie pointed out. "Would you really be selfish enough to want her to stay here, despite the pain she was in?"
"They could've fixed her. They should've fixed her...I should've fixed her."
"Kelly," Carrie frowned. "There's nothing you could've done. You have to know that."
Kelly just shook her head, and Carrie pulled her back to her once more, pressing her lips firmly against her forehead.
"God, I wish it was me instead," she heard Kelly whisper.
"Please don't say that," Carrie begged, closing her eyes tightly. "Why don't you try and sleep?"
"I can't," she shook her head.
"You really need to."
"W-what if I dream about her?"
"I can't promise that you won't," Carrie admitted.
"I don't think I can handle that right now."
"You can," Carrie assured her, hugging her tighter. Kelly rested her head at the base of Carrie's neck, just high enough so Carrie could rest her chin on the top of her head. "Sweet dreams only, you got that?" she whispered softly, feeling Kelly shake as tears started to pour once more.
Carrie wrapped her arms around her as much as she could, holding her as close as humanly possible, kissing the top of her head. It took a while, but eventually the Texan cried herself to sleep. Carrie took a shaky, but relieved breath as her own tears fell down her cheeks. That had been so much harder than she thought it would be.
