"In the pain
There is healing.
In your name
I find meaning,
So I'm holding on."

Carrie ran a comforting hand up and down Kelly's bare back the next morning.
"Baby..." Kelly drawled hoarsely in her ear, still half asleep.
Carrie felt her cheeks flush at the sound of it, and her heart break at the thought of having to bring her back down to reality.
"Kell?" Carrie said softly.
Kelly pushed back some, rubbing her eyes as she smiled tiredly, "Mornin'."
"Good morning," Carrie smiled apologetically. She caught her eye, and felt her stomach churn at the realization returning in them.
"Something tells me that it wasn't some just a bad dream, huh?" Kelly asked weakly.
"No," Carrie shook her head.
Kelly nodded, her eyes swimming with tears.
Carrie reached up, brushing them away.
"I-I was being a little selfish last night," Kelly admitted. "How are you doing?"
"I'm fine," Carrie replied, cradling her face. "Just worried about you."
"You don't have to lie. I know you cared a lot about her."
Carrie forced a laugh, "How could I not?"
Kelly's jaw clenched as more tears threatened to fall, "God, I miss her already."
"I know," Carrie nodded.
"I wish I could've said goodbye," Kelly sniffed. "You think she knew how much she meant to me?"
"Of course she did. She looked up to you so much. You were her family, you know?"
There was a knock on the door, causing both of their heads to turn.
"Kelly? Are you in there?" Jason's voice called from the other side of the door.
"Yea," she called back, her voice cracking.
"I'm making breakfast if you want. Are you ok?"
"N-no," Kelly replied, her eyes watering.
"Shh," Carrie soothed, wiping the tears away.
"Kelly? Kelly, open the door," Jason demanded, the worry evident in his voice.
"Shoot," Carrie frowned. "Come on Kell," she got up, guiding her over to the bathroom, rummaging through her closet for a pair of jeans and t-shirt, tossing them to the Texan. "Get dressed, ok? I'll go talk to him."
Carrie closed the bathroom door, grabbing her clothes that were still on the ground, now dried, and slipped them on.
"Kelly?" Jason shook the door handle.
"Hey," Carrie said softly, unlocking the door and opening it.
"Carrie?" he asked confusedly. "Where's Kelly? She sounded upset."
"Um, yea," she nodded, joining him in the hall, closing the bedroom door behind her.
"What happened?"
"It's Alex," Carrie replied carefully.
Jason's face fell, "No."
"Yea, she passed away last night. I'm sorry."
He nodded, leaning back against the wall, "Are you ok?"
"It sucks," she admitted.
"And Kelly?"
"She's taking it hard, but I don't think anybody expected anything else from her. She loved Alex like crazy."
Jason nodded, taking a shaky breath, "Is there anything she needs to do?"
"Dr. Lopez said she should stop by the hospital this afternoon."
"I'll bring y'all," Jason replied.
"Thanks," she offered a smile, the smell of food from the kitchen catching her nose. Her stomach growled, reminding her of the fact that she had missed out on supper last night.
"Come on, there's plenty of food," Jason commented, ushering her to the kitchen. "So you, uh, you stayed with her last night?"
"Um, yea, you know, she didn't want to be by herself."
"Can't blame her," he nodded, showing her to the food. "Help yourself."

"This world will never be
What I expected.
And if I don't belong,
Who would have guessed it."

Carrie felt nauseous as Jason pulled the car into the hospital's parking lot, the thought of going in there and not seeing that adorable six year old, bouncing around, completely overwhelmed her. She glanced at Kelly who was seated next to her, and she truly thought she was going to be sick. She had never seen a living person that seemed so...dead. Her face and eyes were void of any type of emotion which was made so much worse due to the fact that the Texan's eyes normally seemed to hold the entire world.
"Kelly, we're here," Jason pointed out carefully as he and Carrie opened their doors to exit the vehicle.
"Yea," she replied flatly.
"We've got to get down sweetie," Carrie said, trying to keep her voice as gentle as possible.
"I don't think I can," she shook her head.
"Kell, I know it hurts, trust me I do, but we need to do this for Alex, ok? Dr. Lopez said there was some stuff that needed to be taken care of, and I promise you after today, we don't have to come back here until you're ready."
"Why can't we have met somewhere else?"
"Kelly," Jason said firmly. "We're going in there...now."
Carrie opened her mouth to fuss at him for being so harsh, but stopped as Kelly nodded, getting out of the car.
"Sometimes she doesn't want to be given a choice," Jason shrugged, seeing Carrie's shocked expression. "She has plenty of other things to worry about."
Carrie watched Jason place a protective arm around his younger sister's shoulders as she followed them into the hospital building.
They passed by the nurses station, making their way to Dr. Lopez's office. She could see Kelly shrinking inward as they further entered the hospital. She wanted to hold her, tell her everything was going to be alright, but as she saw Jason wrap his arm tighter around her, she refrained.
Jason knocked on the office door, and it opened to reveal a small group of people gathered.
"Kelly," Dr. Lopez smiled gently. "I'm glad you can make it. Maybe, we should move to the conference room," he added, noticing how crowded his office had gotten.
Kelly, Jason, and Carrie took a step back, allowing everybody in the room to exit before following them to another room.
"Who are all those people?" Carrie asked, walking besides Kelly.
"I don't know," Kelly shook her head. "I only recognize one of them besides Dr. Lopez. The others are probably lawyers and stuff."
"Which one do you recognize?"
Kelly pointed out the middle-aged lady who definitely looked worse for the wear, making her stand out from the other, professionally dressed adults.
"Who is that?" Carrie questioned.
"Alex's mom," she frowned.
+++++++++
"Who are they?" Alex's mom asked briskly, nodding towards Kelly as they all sat around a table in a small conference room.
"Mrs. Defrank--" Dr. Lopez began, but was cut off by a man in a suit sitting next to Jason.
"She is not a Defrank."
"And, um, you are?" Dr. Lopez questioned, seeming a bit overwhelmed himself.
"I'm Mr. Defrank...Alexandra's father."
Both Jason and Carrie turned to Kelly who was seated between them, hearing her mutter something that sounded an awful lot like "Scum". Carrie tried to take her hand under the table, but the Texan pulled away, a sudden fire in her eyes that caught the country singer off guard. It was strange to see after trying to adjust to her being so lifeless.
"I'm sorry," Dr. Lopez apologized before turning back to Alex's mom. "Mrs....?"
"Mrs. Reed," she nodded.
"Mrs. Reed, this is Kelly," Dr. Lopez explained. "She's the one that's been taking care of Alex's hospital bills."
"Why is she here?"
"Kelly has been involved in every aspect of Alex's treatment over this past year. We felt she has the right to be here while we settle everything."
"I don't think she should be here," Mrs. Reed shook her head.
"With all due respect ma'am, but that decision is no longer up to you," another man in a suit replied. Kelly studied him carefully before recognizing him as one of the hospital's attorneys.
"She is my daughter."
"Biologically," he nodded. "But when you brought her here, you signed her over to the hospital. When custody became there's, they obtained all legal and medical rights to Alex."
"My client never agreed to that," a man next to Mr. Defrank, who Kelly guessed to be his lawyer, protested.
"According to the court documents," the hospital's lawyer said, flipping through paper work. "Mr. Defrank granted sole-custody of Alexandra to Mrs. Reed, therefore there was no need for your client's permission."
"If I had known she was going to pull this, I would've never agreed," Mr. Defrank shook his head.
"Alexandra is my daughter. I did what I thought was best," Mrs. Reed scowled at him.
"Alexandra is just as much my daughter as is yours."
"You didn't know the first thing about Alexandra."
"Alex!" Kelly exclaimed, causing all eyes to turn to her. "Her name was Alex. And if either of you had paid any attention to your own daughter, you would have known that. And she isn't some piece of property that you can fight over. She was a girl. A little six year old girl with the most amazing smile I'd ever seen; how either of you could have lost sight of that is beyond me."
"Kelly," Mr. Defrank's lawyer addressed her.
Kelly watched as recognition crossed Mrs. Reed's eyes. She suddenly felt nervous as she turned to the man, "Yes?"
"It says here," he said, looking at several documents. "It says here that you were the one affording Alexandra...Alex's treatment. Is that true?"
Jason turned to Dr. Lopez and the hospital's attorney nervously, "Should her lawyer be here for this?"
"She's perfectly fine," the attorney assured him. "She's been great for the hospital over the past year; I'll gladly return the favor."
"Yes, it's true," Kelly nodded.
"May I ask how this came about?" Defrank's lawyer asked.
"Pretty simple. I was walking into the hospital at the same time Mrs. Reed was with Alex. She asked me to take care of her then left her with me."
"So, how exactly did the hospital come into custody of Miss Defrank?"
"Well, legally we couldn't perform any serious operations on Alex without her guardian's permission," Dr. Lopez replied. "So the hospital's lawyers had to track down Mrs. Reed in order to do so. That was when we all decided it was best for her just to grant us custody so we wouldn't have to go through that hassle again."
"I was addressing Kelly."
"I'm not a lawyer," Kelly pointed out.
"Which leads to the question of what exactly is your profession," the lawyer smiled slyly. "You must be of considerable funds in order to be able to pay for such a thing without even a moment's hesitation."
"Kelly's occupation is of no importance to this meeting," the hospital's attorney cut in.
"What exactly is the importance of this meeting?" Carrie asked, trying to get things back on track.
"And you are?" Mr. Defrank's lawyer asked.
Carrie glanced at the hospital's attorney who shook his head. "Here with Kelly," she replied.
"And she's right," the hospital's attorney nodded. "Being that Alex's custody remains to that of the hospital, then it's the hospitals duty to decide upon the arrangements that need to be made."
"I have no problem paying," Kelly said softly.
"I'm taking care of this one personally," Dr. Lopez replied. "It's the least I can do."
"She's my daughter," Defrank argued. "I'll take care of it."
"Sorry, but financial matters are not up for debate," the attorney cut in. "We've called you all here because we thought you might want to have some input on how things are to be handled."
"Simple and quick."
"Well, if the nice doctor is going to pay for it," Mrs. Reed countered. "Why not give Alexandra the proper ceremony she deserves? A nice outside memorial."
Carrie frowned. Was everything about money with these people?
"I think a proper burial would be best," Kelly replied. "In a church, done the right way. Nothing extravagant. She wouldn't want that. Just something small, allowing the kids she grew close to, to be able to say good-bye one last time."
"A church?" Mrs. Reed questioned. "Alexandra didn't know the first thing about a church."
"Just because you never brought her doesn't mean she didn't believe," Kelly countered. "She went to mass every Sunday this past year that she was feeling well enough to."
Dr. Lopez nodded, "Kelly even brought her and a couple other children to a nearby church several times to give them some time out of the small hospital chapel."
"That would probably be the best place to have it," Kelly nodded. "She loved it there."
"I do not like the fact that some child is telling me what is and isn't best for my own daughter," Mrs. Reed cut in.
"I'm not a child," Kelly pointed out.
"And I think I knew my daughter better than anyone."
"Why are you even here?"
"Excuse me?"
"You heard me. Why are you even here?"
"Because my daughter passed away."
"Bull shit," Kelly said firmly.
"Kell," Carrie urged, taking her hand, and holding it firmly this time so she couldn't pull away. "Calm down. It's ok."
"No, it's not ok," she replied. "Come on Mrs. Reed. Tell us the real reason why you are here. Why the both of you are here. Insurance policy maybe? Come to collect a little money."
"Kelly," Dr. Lopez tried to soothe. "We know you're really hurting about Alex--"
"I will not be addressed this way! Not when I just lost someone very special to me," Mrs. Reed argued.
"Once again, that's bull shit, and you know it," Kelly stood up, ignoring Carrie tugging on her arm. "Alex was dead to you the day you dropped her off over here. You saw it as one less burden didn't you? Didn't you?!"
"I did no such thing."
"Then why didn't you come visit?" Kelly asked softly. "Why didn't you come to see her? How come you never called? How come you never wrote back? I know she wrote you tons of letters. I saw them myself, and she never got a single one back. Why?"
"Did you ever think that maybe it was hard for me?"
Kelly's eyes narrowed, "For you? Hard for you? She was six years old. You know how hard it is for someone that age to be completely cut off from a parent? You know how much that completely rips their world apart? Not to mention, both parents," she glanced at Mr. Defrank. "She was dying. She was just a baby, and she was dying. How goddamn selfish do you have to be to use the fact that it was hard on you as an excuse?"
"Kelly," the hospital's attorney said carefully. "Maybe you should wait outside."
"Gladly," she replied, moving her chair out of the way, and walking out of the room. Jason quickly chased after her, leaving Carrie where she was seated.
