Rock of Ages, Forever Pt83
Nick stood in the waning daylight among the charred ruins of his home where he had lived for over a hundred years. Most everything was lost, artifacts that he had collected over the centuries were gone, and impossible to replace. The hundreds of books that lined the library walls lie scattered around, some of those were salvageable. Most importantly, his journals that went back as far as 1230, having been kept in a glass tempered shelving unit. The pages were wet from the water and some of the ink had ran and some were blackened around the edges. The air was heavy with the smell of gasoline from the burned remains of the cars that where in the garage. Several of the tanks had exploded, fueling the fire with gasoline.
Sav had been watching him amble around in the piles of debris picking out a few things that could be kept. Going over to him as he was bent over to pick up another book to thumb through it.
Sav stopped a few feet from him, shoving his hand in his pockets, “Hey, how are you doing?”
“Fine…why do you ask?”
“I thought maybe you would be upset about this.”
Nick dropped the ruined book, then looked at him. “Now why would I be upset?”
Sav couldn’t believe what he was hearing. “Look around you Nick. Everything, your house, your life, all of it….gone.”
“Most of which can be replaced, unlike the eight people that escaped with their lives.”
“And they wouldn’t have if you didn’t push your fear of fire away and help them.”
“They were the most important reason for doing it.” Nick replied softly looking away from him. “For you and nothing more.”
“So, am I to believe that you are actually starting the care for these mere mortals, as you are so fond of calling them?”
Nick tossed another book back in the pile and walked away, not giving Sav an answer. After a few minutes of watching him run his fingers across the piano keys that was now badly out of tune from the fire, Sav started laughing. Nick slowly turned to him and waited for him to stop.
“What could possibly be so funny?” Nick asked with a smirk.
“You, and don’t try and hide it anymore.”
“Just what is it, that you think I’m hiding?”
“That you do care about them.”
“Don’t be absurd.” Nick chuckled.
“I’m not, you could have easily left them all in there to die, but you didn’t. You say that you did it for me, I just don’t understand that.”
“I’ve… grown to like them.” Nick replied, then looked away.
“Really!” Sav exclaimed.
“Is that so hard to believe.”
“Yes it is.” Sav shot back. “You know something else I don’t understand?”
“I’m sure your going to tell me.” Nick said quickly.
“You’ve changed. I’m not the only one that has noticed. What I’d like to know is when and what made you different than what you use to be.”
Nick frowned at the question. “I believe it was the night you came to me after that last fight we had. You remember the one…where you shoved…..”
“I know which one, you don’t have to explain it.” Sav cut him off. “Why that one?”
“It was then that I realized that you wouldn’t leave when you had so many chances to. So you see, I’m not the only that has changed.” Nick held his gaze a moment longer. Finally turning away from him, he headed off to a different part of the house, to shift through the rubble, ending their conversation.
“Ok…well, I’m going to see the guys at the hotel to make sure they’re ok.” When Nick didn’t reply, Sav’s voice broke the silence. “I’ll see you later tonight?”
“Perhaps.” Nick replied as he lifted a partially charred painting of his sister Fleur.
Sav waited to see if he was going to say any more and when he didn’t, he took a deep breath and leaped in the night sky.

Despite how exhausted Joe was after the long night. Having a slight hangover from drinking with Sav and staying at the hospital most of the day, he couldn’t help but laugh when Phil, Rick and Vivian filled him in on what happened when they tried to get rooms at a local hotel. No one had any money, no ID’s and where half dressed. Phil told the desk clerk who he was, but the clerk had never heard of them. He used the phone to call their management company, forgetting what time it was there and no one answered the phones. After arguing with the desk clerk for nearly fifteen minutes, Phil blurted out Nicholas de Brabant's name. The clerk told them to wait there and went to get the manager. Phil told him the same thing and were immediately shown to the best rooms in the hotel. The manager also told them if they were in need of any clothes, that he would open up the small clothes shop for them.
Joe was shocked when he heard that everything was being put on Mr. de Brabant account at the hotel and he immediately got up.
“Where are you going?” Rick asked.
“I’m not walking around in these clothes the hospital gave me. I’m going shopping, besides, we deserve it after all the shit that Nick has put us through. Why not spend some of his money.”
“Joe, you can’t be serious?” Phil chuckled.
“Very. I’ll fall in that 'kept man' category for a couple of hours.”
Everyone laughed and headed off to the hotel clothes shop. Between the four of them, they managed to spend over a thousand dollars. Joe had picked up something for Rebecca, Amber and Sav while he was at it and had everything delivered to the rooms.

Sav dropped to the ground behind the hotel. Without thinking, he headed straight for the bar and found them sitting in a corner booth.
“Hey guys.” Sav said as he flopped down in the seat.
“Looks like you flew here Sav.” Rick commented.
“I didn’t have a car, had to get here some how.”
“Yeah, I don’t think any of them were drivable after the fire got finished with them.” Rick added.
“How is Amber?” Sav asked.
“She’s fine. The hospital let her out earlier. She’s upstairs sleeping with Rebecca.” Joe told him.
“How about you Phil, feeling ok?”
“No he’s not.” Rick started. “He’s been walking around all day saying wow, that was incredible, I can’t believe I did it, silly stuff like that.”
“No, I wasn’t!” Phil exclaimed.
“I’m lying Joe?”
“Yes you were.” Joe chuckled, pointing at Phil. “I think I heard him mumble, if what Sav did felt that good, how was the sex part of it.”
“Now I never said that.” Phil shot back.
Laughter circled the table and after a few minutes it died down.
“It’s amazing how we can still laugh about this in light of what happened.” Joe commented.
“Yes it is.” Sav started. “The house is a total loss. I managed to find a few things that belong to us that are fine, but everything else, clothes, personal stuff, our equipment, and any demo’s that where in the studio, it’s all……gone.”
Everyone sat in silence for a long time, letting what Sav told them sink in.
“All that hard work on the album its like….poof up in smoke.” Vivian said.
“At least the master copy was in the safe in Nick’s room where I put it, it’s untouched.”
“That’s good to hear.” Phil said. “How is Nick dealing with losing his house?”
“He’s quiet. Didn’t have to much to say about it. Just that some things can replaced, but not the lives that we saved.”
“That’s touching.” Joe replied with a little sarcasm.
“If it weren’t him Joe, at least two people at this table would not be here. I would never have gotten everyone out in time. With the rapid speed of the fire in which it swept through the house.”
“Sorry, guess that wasn’t one of my best comments, and your right, I do have to give him credit for that.”
“Does he know how it started?” Vivian asked.
“No, but he’ll find out eventually.”
“This will set the tour back yet again.” Joe sighed as he pulled his hand over his face.
“It’s not like we haven’t had problems before in getting an album out or starting the tour.” Phil said.
“That was paper cuts compared to all of this.” Joe commented.
Sav had to laugh at that. “Painful way of putting it, Joe.”
“No pun intended Sav.”
“None taken.”
“Maybe it should just be a studio album this time.” Rick said. All eyes turned to him. “Yeah……well maybe not.” He quickly added.
“We’ll get there soon enough.” Sav told them.
“Well, in light of what happened last night and everything else that has over the last, what, four almost five years.” Vivian took a deep breath. “I’m seriously considering leaving the band.”
Everyone just looked at him, not believing what he said.
“What made you decide that Vivian?” Sav finally asked.
“Let’s just say that I got a real heavy dose of reality last night and what you're capable of.”
“You’ve always known what I was capable of.” Sav tried to hold his tone of voice down, but it traveled across the bar anyway.
“I guess I didn’t really realize that until I saw you last night. So who is next Sav, me again?”
“Could be, or it could be Rick, or maybe that woman over there.”
“Well, I guess you just made up my mind for me. I’ll catch the first flight out tomorrow.”
“You don’t mean that Vivian.” Joe started.
“Yes I do. I don’t want to say the wrong thing to him and lose my life over it. He almost did it once already.”
“You wont have to Vivian.” Sav huffed as he stood up. “You stay with the band, and good luck on the tour. I’ll drop in from time to time to see how everyone is.”
“What…what are your saying?” Phil spoke up.
“If anyone should leave, it’s me.” Sav told them.
“Like hell you will!” Joe shot back.
Without another word Sav turned and left. Joe quickly rose and went after him.
“Oh geez, here we go again.” Rick rolled his eyes upward.
They watched as Joe and Sav argued. Several times Joe grabbed his arm to keep him from leaving. Sav would just yank it away and continue out the door and into the street.
“He won’t leave.” Phil said.
“How can you be sure?” Rick asked.
“Because Joe will talk him into staying, like always.” Phil turned his eyes to the other male at the table. “Vivian, you should give it more thought also. I mean, he’s only went after you once.”
“What of the next time Phil? He may not stop or we're alone. I’m sorry, I don’t want to take that chance. I have a wife and two children to think of. What good am I to them if I’m dead?”
“He’s not going to kill you.” Rick said.
“And I don’t want to be what he is either.” Vivian replied and he too left the bar.
“I knew this would happen. I guess I better start looking for another band or a different profession.” Rick stated.
“Don’t worry so much Rick. Things will work out in the end and we’ll go on tour, make another album and so forth.”
“I hope your right Phil, cause I don’t really want to play with anyone else.”
Phil and Rick finally left the bar and headed to their rooms for some much needed rest after the long night and longer day, hoping that everything will be better tomorrow and in the upcoming days.

A few weeks later, Nick managed to rent a house and insisted that they stay there, knowing that the tour would eventfully start here like they had originally planned. They all agreed and settled in, and spent a week going around the city replacing the things that were lost in the fire.
Joe did talk Sav into staying like Phil knew he would and had caught them several times in the hotel and house wrapped around each other in a heated kiss. He didn’t know how far it went after those times, until he cornered Joe one night and asked him. Joe had admitted that they had been together a couple of times at Rebecca house, but not since then and didn’t go into details. Phil didn’t want to know the details and just told him it was about time it happened.
Vivian, true to his word, did leave, taking a flight out a few days later. No amount of talking by anyone could get him to change his mind. This set the tour back even more. They had to find another guitarists to replace him and give him time to learn all of the songs.
Joe and Sav had taken Amber into the city one cool evening to the toy store. They wanted to buy her something to play with since all her toys were lost in the fire. They drew stares from other customers as they romped around the store like kids, having fun with Amber as she darted from one toy or another. Both of them wound up buying more than they should have.
Putting the packages in the car, they went to grab a bite to eat. Amber loved the noodle part of spaghetti and that's where they went, the best spaghetti place in the city. Talking over the details of the tour and replacing Vivian had dragged into several hours at the restaurant when Joe noticed how sleepy Amber was getting. So they called it a night and left. Joe was putting Amber in her car seat while Sav took care of the bill for dinner.
“Here, you drive.” Joe said tossing him the keys. “I’m a little tired myself.”
Sav caught them and went around to the driver’s side. “Shit.” he grumbled, leaning forward slightly.
“What?“ Joe asked looking at him.
“What the hell is this?” Sav murmured and pulled a small object from his stomach.
“Looks like a dart of some kind.” Joe commented, seeing the small red object over the hood of the car.
Sav looked around the street to see who could have pegged him for it. “But who would do…” his words were cut off as a large black van screeched around the corner and barreled down the road.
“Why do people insist on driving like maniac’s?” Joe said lowly.
“Because they can.” Sav replied and grabbed the handle.
Joe was already in the car when the van came to skidding halt beside them. The door flew open and four large men jumped out. Sav turned just in time to see them rushing toward him, hitting him with such force, it threw him back against the car, breaking the drivers side window. Glass flew inside the car, Joe shielded his face as pieces hit him. Amber started crying as she was rudely awakened by the noise. Joe glanced back at her to make sure she was ok and got out of the car.
When he hit the window, Sav immediately started fighting back, but with four of them on him, he had no chance. One had grabbed him around the throat and was chocking him. Sav pulled his arm forward to punch him in the gut with his elbow, as soon as he let go, another was on him. He caught this one in the jaw with his fist. The other two came forward at the same time and over powered him, roughly spinning Sav around to face the car, each one grabbing his arms, then slamming him against the metal. The third one helped moved behind them, once again wrapping his arms around Sav's neck. Joe made a move to go around the car and help him.
“No, get Amber and get the hell out of here!” Sav yelled at him.
Joe quickly ran back to his side of the car, wrestling a still crying Amber from her car seat and turned around to come face to face with a large figure clad all in black. He looked over to Sav as the other three men dragged him toward the van. He struggled violently against them, but it was no use, not with three of them. They managed to get him inside and chained to a post that wouldn’t give way under his strength.
“After you Mr. Elliott.” Came the deep voice. “No harm will come to you or the child if you cooperate.”
Doing as he was told, Joe headed to the van. As he neared, he could hear Sav screaming with rage at them. In that second, he was more afraid of Sav then the man that escorted him. Climbing in, Amber began to cry louder at the noise that Sav was making to get lose. Her cries reached his raging mind, it was like putting out a candle. Sav turned to them and the look on his face startled Joe. The vampire in him was in full force, a murderous look glinted in the deep red of his eyes. Joe had never seen them that color before and it scared him even more. He pulled Amber closer to him as the van started forward.
Joe sat on the cold floor of the van and slowly rocked Amber to calm her. Sav hugged the pole to get him self under control. He used Amber’s soft whimper to flood his mind and concentrated on it. He finally turned to them to meet Joe’s gaze. No words were needed to tell him that Joe was terrified of what these men might do with them.
“I think there was something in that dart.” Sav mumbled softly.
Joe made a move to go over to him, but a gruff voice stopped him. He had no choice, but to stay where he was.
”Just do as they ask Joe and everything will be fine.” Sav told him, his words slurred as the drug took affect. Joe felt him brush his mind, images flooded in and were almost painful, but comforting at the same time. Sav’s head began to fall forward and his body went limp.
“Sav don’t go to sleep!” Joe yelled at him.
“Shut up!” One of the men yelled at him. Joe glared at him and Amber began to cry again. He cradled her in his arms and looked back over at Sav. He saw him in the dim over head light, that he had slumped to the floor of the van.
“We just gave him something to sleep, easier to handle him that way.” Came the same deep voice from a moment ago.
Joe remained silent, hugging Amber close to his chest as the van bumped along the road to disappear into the dead of night.
