"If you've ever heard a beating heart,
A rhythm for the songs we're too afraid to sing.
Nobody here is perfectly fine,
A delicate frame, a fragile design."

"You're not thinking about what Alex's mom said, are you?" Carrie asked, noting the tears that were falling down the shorter singer's cheeks as they lay in bed, facing each other.
"I'm really trying not to."
"Kell..." she reached up, brushing a tear away.
"I know it's crazy," Kelly frowned.
"Then why are you letting it bother you?"
"I can't help but think that maybe if Alex had been at the hospital when she started getting worse, then maybe they could've done something. You know, they always say that the sooner someone gets treatment the better."
"But you couldn't help that," Carrie said gently.
"Yea, I could've. I was being selfish. She didn't have to come to Texas. Or at least, she didn't have to stay as long as she did. I just wasn't ready to let go of her."
"You weren't being selfish. You were making a little girl's dream come true. She wanted nothing more than to get to spend some time with you, especially in Texas. She always talked about how proud you are of where you're from, and how she couldn't wait to go one day."
Kelly sighed, shaking her head.
Carrie tilted her head, leaning forward to kiss her softly. She felt the shorter singer relax in her arms as her lips started to move against her own. "Please don't feel guilty," she begged, pulling away.
"Out of all the emotions going through me right now, that's probably the least painful."
Carrie could feel herself tearing up as she wiped more tears from the Texan's cheeks, "I wish you didn't have to go through this. I wish when we met that we didn't have to go through any of this--exes and funerals...it's not fair. I just want to see you smile again. Like eyes dancing, huge grin, six year old that just got chocolate ice cream smile."
Kelly choked out a sob.
"Shoot," Carrie cursed, allowing her to bury her face just under her chin. "Definitely not the proper simile to be using right now. I'm sorry."
"It's ok."
Carrie highly doubted that as she felt her warm tears against her skin. "Kell...I don't know what I'm supposed to do."
"You don't have to do anything," she replied softly.
"I know, all I have to do is be here, but I feel like that's not enough."
"No. You don't even have to do that...but you are, and that means the world to me, Care; it really does."
"If I were you, I could totally right a song right now that would make this all better and make you smile."
"I wrote a couple," Kelly admitted, sniffing.
"Oh yea?"
"But I doubt they'd put anybody in a cheerful mood."
"Well, I don't think anybody would expect any difference under the circumstances," Carrie replied, relieved to have a change of topic, hoping that it would get her mind off of things just for a few moments. "Do you think they'll make the new album? I mean, not the new one you're finishing up, but the new, new one."
"I don't know."
"About what? Kell, I haven't heard them, but I'm sure they're great, and I'm really sure that they could help out someone out there that's going through the same thing as most of your music does."
Kelly sighed, wiping her eyes as she wrapped an arm tightly around Carrie's stomach, "I'm just not sure about this new, new album."
"Why not?"
"The stuff so far is really, really personal and raw."
"As opposed to all the other songs you wrote that were so unpersonal."
"I know, but these...I've never written like this before."
"How so?" Carrie asked curiously.
Kelly couldn't help the slight smile that she was wearing. If she tried really hard she could imagine that they were back when they had first started hanging out when Carrie was asking a million questions, and Alex was still this amazing bundle of life. "Normally when I write, it's to get something out or to get over something. Once it's out of my, I'm done with it. But these...a lot of them I have no idea where they're coming from. Well, obviously, I know where the ones I wrote the past couple days came from, but the others...I've never had a song that I've written make me think before."
"Are they any good?"
"Yea," she nodded. "And at the risk of sounding conceited, I'd say some were down right amazing."
"You have to release them, Kell."
"I know. You'll be there with me?"
"Absolutely."
"Then maybe."
"How are you doing?" Carrie asked, rubbing her back.
"Just trying to forget."
"I don't think your supposed to forget. Heal, definitely, but not forget." Carrie felt the shorter girl's lips press lightly against her neck, and she sighed, holding her closely.
