"Please wear the face,
The one where you smile,
Because you
Lighten up my heart."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Is there a reason why the cowgirl told me she loved me when she came drop you off the other morning?" Ashley asked as she drove Kelly to a radio interview.
"She thinks she doesn't say it enough," Kelly explained. "Caught you off guard?"
"A bit," Ashley laughed, nodding her head.
"She really likes you and Jay."
"Ok?"
"I guess I just wanted to say thanks for being nice. I know she's not exactly the type of person you normally hang around with, but it really means a lot that you've given her a chance."
"She's a good kid," Ashley shrugged. "A bit nutty at times, but she definitely means well."
"Yea," Kelly nodded.
"Kelly..." she began carefully.
"Yea?"
"About Alex...I know I wasn't quite as close with her as the rest of y'all were, but she was great, and even though I didn't spend as much time with her, or maybe because of that, I could see the difference in her from when y'all first met until she passed, and it was incredible. You were great with her, and you really changed her life for the better, I hope you know that."
"Thanks," Kelly sniffed back tears as Ashley rubbed the back of her neck comfortingly.
"You still manage to amaze me sometimes," Ashley remarked.
Kelly gave a short laugh.
"I know, I know, you hate it when we get all serious and corny," she smiled. "But I have to say it sometime because I know you don't hear it enough. You are a great person, hunny, and all the good things that happen to you, all the awards, and all your goals that you reach and your dreams that come true, you deserve them, every single one of them."
"Thanks Ash," Kelly replied, wiping the tears. "I know you don't do bull shit, so that means a lot coming from you."
Ashley laughed, pushing her playfully, "You're a nut too sometimes, you know that? No wonder you and the cowgirl get along so well."
Carrie laughed as she read the text message Kelly sent her:
I'm thinking of a number between one and five...
"What's so funny?" Ann, her assistant asked.
"Kelly," Carrie shook her head, showing her the text.
"Random much?" Ann laughed. "What are you gonna guess?"
Carrie held up a finger as she smiled, replying to Kelly's text:
12
"Twelve?" Ann questioned. "But that isn't even--"
She was cut off by Carrie's phone ringing again, signaling a reply from Kelly:
Wth? How'd you know?
Carrie laughed, sending her another:
Because I know you. What do I win?
"Y'all have some serious problems?" Ann shook her head, laughing as she walked away to go talk to the photographer that would be in charge of the shoot.
Nothing. You sooo cheated.
Carrie smiled, replying quickly:
Did not. And I want my prize. What is it?
Carrie felt her heart melt as she read Kelly's next text:
The best damn hug you've ever had the next time I see you.
Kelly smiled as she got a final reply from Carrie:
Nothing could possibly make me happier.
"Good news?" Jason asked, setting down the take-out he had picked up in front of her as they sat in the kitchen area of the studio.
"Just Carrie being a dork," she shook her head, accepting the food he handed her.
"It's good to see you smile again," he noted, starting in on his own food.
Kelly nodded, her smile faltering.
"Just reminded you, didn't I?"
"Yea," she sighed.
"Sorry."
"It's alright," she brushed it off, picking at her food.
"So...?"
"The album's almost done," Kelly nodded. "And I feel really, really good about this."
"You're still recording new stuff for the next one?"
"Yea, I have a couple new ones from last week."
"Those will probably be the ones that I won't enjoy hearing, huh?"
"Yea," Kelly replied, knowing how much he hated to listen to the darker songs she wrote.
"Let me know when you're recording those. I'll steer clear."
"Sure."
"So, I'm supposed to ask how you're holding up and everything," Jason studied her carefully.
"I'm ok," she nodded.
"You want to talk about it?"
"Not really."
"You never did like to dwell on things."
"It's easier to get over them that way."
"True," he agreed.
"But you offered, so you can tell Ashley or Carrie--whichever one put you up to this--that you were a good big brother," Kelly looked at him knowingly.
"It was Carrie," Jason replied sheepishly. "Ashley said she already talked to you, but Carrie was worrying because you haven't actually talked to her since she left, only texts, so she wanted to check on you."
"I told her I'd call if I needed," Kelly rolled her eyes.
"What's wrong with calling even if you don't need?" he raised an eyebrow.
"Since when did you become all philosophical?"
"Just going back to what I said before the funeral," he shrugged.
"I want to call her," Kelly replied. "I do; I seriously miss talking to her, but I know she's just gonna want to talk about Alex and how I'm doing. She doesn't understand the whole forget thing."
"I thinks she's right on this one," he frowned. "I totally get not wanting to constantly dwell on something, but forgetting it?"
Kelly sighed.
"She's just worried about you," Jason offered.
"I never asked her to worry," she countered.
"That usually comes with the whole friendship thing...and that you asked for."
"Yea."
"Kelly, it's pretty simple. If you don't want her to worry, call her."
"Why can't she call me?"
"Because she knows you want to do this on your own."
Kelly frowned.
Jason shook his head, standing, "I've got a couple errands to run. Call me when you're done in here, ok?"
"Yea," Kelly nodded, watching him walk out of the kitchen, towards the studio's back door.
"Honestly, I didnt mean to cry so hard,
But the heartache was pouring in like rain,
I didnt mean to show I care."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kelly flipped her phone back and forth in her hands as she sat up on her bed. The thought that Carrie was worrying because of her, was eating away at her. This caring thing wasn't always so great, Kelly decided as she dialed the country singer's number.
"Hey," she could hear Carrie smiling as she answered.
"Hey," Kelly replied. "Just wanted to see what's up."
"Mmhmm," Carrie replied disbelievingly.
"Mmhmm?" Kelly questioned with a slight smile. "Who says I didn't just want to see what you're doing?"
"Oh, I have no doubt that you wanted to talk because if you're anything like me, then texting is fine, but you're seriously missing the sound of my voice because I know I'm missing yours."
"I do miss talking to you," Kelly replied honestly. "So why the doubt?"
"You may have wanted to talk to me, but you're stubborn as hell."
"That's nothing new."
"You didn't want to call me because you thought all I would talk about is Alex and how you are doing, when really, you'd just like to forget."
Kelly sighed, realizing she was caught.
Carrie laughed softly, "I know you better than you think. And just so you know, if you don't want to talk about something, I'm not going to make you. I'm happy with you just telling me about how things are going in the studio."
"Well, since you're such a mind-reader, why did I call you then?"
"Because you care," Carrie smiled happily. "Jason told you I was worried, and you felt bad about making me worry because you care."
Kelly groaned, "Ugh...I do, and it sucks. I felt so freaking guilty, Care, for making you worry."
"I'm sorry for making you feel guilty, but I was worried."
"I know, I should've called. I'm sorry for assuming that you'd push me to talk."
"It's ok," Carrie nodded, stretching out on her hotel bed. "So how was your week?"
"Musically, it's been really good. I've been in the studio a lot. We're nearly done with the fourth album, and I couldn't be happier with it."
"What about the record company?"
"I haven't talked to them since I kinda told them off back in Texas," Kelly admitted.
Carrie laughed, "You scared them. That's awesome."
"Yea, and then I got in touch with Cory, we're gonna go in tomorrow and record those songs from last week that I wrote."
"Cory? That's new."
"Yea, I don't write with him all that much, but one of the songs I kinda have this odd vision of a single violin in a lower register, something very simple, and then the other one, more of the traditional bigger ballad, full blown string section and band and possibly an organ, and since he's so versatile as a musician, I figure it'd work out well."
"Sounds like it's gonna turn out great," Carrie replied.
"Yea, I'm really looking forward to it. How about you? Promo is going well?"
"Yea, it's going great. Crazy, but great."
"You sound exhausted," Kelly noted, laying down in her bed.
"I was going to say the same thing about you."
"Long days, short nights."
"Don't I know it," Carrie yawned, curling up. "What are you doing?"
"Lying down in bed, you?"
"Same...thinking."
"About what?" Kelly asked curiously.
"How the pillow next to mine doesn't smell like you," she admitted softly. "It's funny the kind of things you get used to without even realizing it...what are you thinking about?"
"That time you made me cookies to let me know my hard work wasn't going unnoticed," Kelly replied. "I could definitely use some cookies right about now."
"Kell, I'm sorry, I thought I could do it, but I can't. I have to ask..."
Kelly sighed, but didn't protest.
"How are you holding up?" Carrie asked worriedly. "Are you ok? Because I know I'm having trouble with it all, so I just figured you probably were too."
"I get distracted, in the studio. I forget about stuff...about how she's not here anymore. Then, the oddest of things will remind me of her, and it totally catches me off guard, like being sucker punched in the stomach, you know?"
"Yea."
"I was thinking about the funeral," Kelly remarked, unsure of when they had started whispering. "Luke wasn't there, was he?"
"No," Carrie replied. "After we got back from Texas, the couple of times I went hang out with the kids in the game room, he wasn't there. The nurse said he had been staying in his room most of the time since he found out about Alex."
Kelly could feel her eyes watering.
"I think you should go talk to him, Kell. I think it would help him out."
"I can't go back there yet," she said, her voice shaky.
"Kell, don't cry," Carrie pleaded. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have brought it up. I'll change the subject, please just don't cry."
"What happened to healing and not forgetting? Isn't crying healing?" she questioned, wiping her eyes.
"Yes..."
"Then shouldn't I cry?"
"Not when I'm not there to hold you," Carrie said firmly.
Kelly froze.
Carrie could hear Kelly's breathing, still uneven from crying, as she felt her stomach churn. She didn't even realize that she was thinking those words, let alone had she wanted to say them out loud. "Kell...?" she asked carefully.
"Yea?" Kelly replied after a moment.
"Don't freak."
"I'm not freaked," she assured her, her voice deliberate.
"I didn't mean to fuss at you."
"It's ok."
"And I didn't mean to just throw that out there."
"It's ok," Kelly repeated.
"Are you sure? Because you don't sound like it's ok. You sound, I don't know, you sound different."
"I want you to hold me too," Kelly confided, her voice barely audible.
"Kell..."Carrie closed her eyes tightly at the sound of tears in the Texan's voice, noting the slight fear in her tone. "It's ok."
"I'm sorry," she sniffed. "I think I'm gonna go."
"No," Carrie replied quickly. "Stay on the phone...please?"
"I...I'm tired."
"I know, but I don't want you to hang up when things are weird between us."
"It's not weird, just--"
"More open than normal," Carrie finished for her.
"When is your promo done?"
"I have another week and a half, why?"
Kelly chewed on her bottom lip.
"Kell, it's ok. Whatever it is, however you're feeling, I want to know."
"I want to see your face again, next to me, when I wake up. And I want to see your smile...not the smile you use in interviews, but the one you use with me. You are so gorgeous," she replied breathlessly.
Carrie could feel her face flush, "I'll be back soon."
Kelly yawned loudly.
"Alright," Carrie smiled. "I'm gonna let you go because you need some sleep. I'll talk to you soon."
"Ok," Kelly curled up in her bed, pulling her covers around her.
"Sweet dreams."
"Hey Care?"
"Yep?"
"Pick a number between 1 and 20."
"2.3" Carrie replied, laughing softly. "Now get some sleep you dork."
