Rock of Ages, Forever Pt88
Sav pulled up in front of the small gas/convenience store and turned the car off. Laying his head back against the seat, he sighed deeply, he didn’t feel like driving anymore, he was too tired and hungry, but he had promised Joe that he would get him home and he wasn’t about to break that promise. Joe stirred and tightened his arm around Sav’s waist. Looking down at him Sav gently shook him.
“Wake up.”
“Uummm.”
Pulling his fingers through Joe's hair, his attention was drawn to the pulsing vein in Joe's neck. Sav unconsciously ran his tongue over his lips, feeling the hungry roar through his own veins. Putting a tight rein on his hungry, Sav gently stroked his cheek. “Joe….”
“What?”
“You have to get up.”
“Are we home yet?” Joe mumbled. His voice sounding different from the slight swelling in his neck.
“No, I had to stop to find out where we are.”
Joe sat up and looked around as Sav got out of the car to go inside.
“Excuse me, do you have a phone?” Sav asked the man behind the counter.
“Yea, but it’s dead. Storm came through and knocked them out.”
“Figures.” Sav grumbled. “What about a road map?”
“Right there.” The clerk pointed to the maps.
“I don’t know where I am, which one?”
“The blue one.”
Sav took it from the rack and spread it out. “Where?”
Joe came in and glanced around the store, he headed for the drink section. Grabbed a bottle of water, twisting the cap off, he took several swallows. In the next cooler section, he noticed the sandwiches and his stomach immediatly growled in hunger. Reaching inside he grabbed several of small triangle plastic containers. Ripping the cover off, he stooding there eating them as if in a daze.
“You’re right here. Take this ro…hey mister, you have to pay for whatever you eat before leaving!” The man yelled to Joe.
Sav snapped his gaze to the clerk, “He’s hungry, leave him alone.”
“I don’t like thieves in my store.”
“Listen mate……we don’t have any money, we don’t know where we are, we just got away from a crazed maniac that nearly killed him. We’re both tired and hungry, we miss our families, and we’re going home. I’ll be by here tomorrow or next day to pay for anything we take. Hell, I’ll even buy this shit hole of a store. So why don’t you cut us a little slack alright.” Sav was almost yelling at the man by the time he finished.
When the man notice the weird reddish color in Sav's eyes, he took a step back. “Did you put the bruises around his neck?”
“No, I did not!” Sav huffed. “I told you some one else did that.”
“Where is this crazed manic now?”
Sav leaned forward slightly. “I killed him, any more question?”
The clerk raised his hands as if in surrender, "Look man, I don't want any trouble."
"There will not be any trouble if you just do as I ask."
“What guarantee can you give me that you’ll be back to pay for everything?” “None, just my word that I will...and I will need gas.”
"Your word," the clerk snorted. "I don't trust strangers..."
"This stranger is going to kill you, because..." Sav stopped in mid-sentence when the man glanced to his right. "You will not make it to that gun, so don't try."
"It wouldn't kill him anyway." Joe's raspy voice joined the conversation.
The middle-aged man glanced back and forth between the two men that had stepped inside his store fifteen minutes ago. He really didn't want any trouble, and his pasture slumped in defeat. "Fine, take whatever you want, but I will expect to see you tomorrow with payment. he punched several knobs on the controls for the gas pumps. "You are lucky I'm a nice person."
Sav smiled brightly. "Cooperating is always the best way to go." he turned to Joe to see is arms full of sandwiches, a few bottles of water and several bags of chips, he smiled again. "Ready.
Joe nodded in reply to him, then turned the clerk. "I'll make sure he gets by here to pay for everything."
Sav refolded the map. "You will be here tomorrow evening?"
"I own the store, so I'm always here." "Great...thank you for you kindness. Not enough people in the world like you. Thanks again." Sav turned on his heel and followed Joe from the store, back out to the car. Sav filled the tank with gas, then waved to the man before driving off. They rode in silence for a while when Joe finally tried to talk around his sore throat.
“Aren’t you hungry?”
“What?” Sav answered as if the question caught him of guard.
“Are you hungry?” Joe repeated.
“Oh…um….yeah, but I’ll be fine until we get…home.”
Joe leaned forward to look at him in the dim light. His eyes were still the same color as they had been for the past several
months.
“What?” Sav asked when he noticed him.
“Just looking to see what color your eyes are.”
“They are not blue like they’re supposed to be.” Sav chuckled.
“They haven’t been for some time.”
“When I’m half starving it’s hard to stay in control, and you’re so close… now.”
“Then why don’t you take some, just enough to take the edge away.”
Sav was already shaking his head, “No….I can’t, not from you, you don’t…...”
“Sav you need it, just as much as I needed those sandwiches and water.”
Sav glanced in the rearview mirror and then at over at him. “No.”
“It doesn’t have to be a lot.”
“I…I…might take… too much.” Sav stammered over his words. “…to dangerous…no, I can’t…no..”
“You don’t give yourself enough credit.”
“It’s not ….that.”
“Then what is it?”
Shifting in his seat, Sav glanced at him, then back at the darkness around them. “I may go to far… and have to bring you across.”
“And I trust you enough not to.” Joe whispered. He watched him a moment as he wiggled a little in the seat, then he stretched his hand out to lightly ran his fingers up and down his sensitive neck.
Sav slapped his hand away. “Don’t do that.”
Joe started in again and Sav grabbed his hand, holding it firmly down on the seat. But Joe was going to be very persistent in getting him to give in to what he needs. Scooting over in the seat, he leaned over and went straight for his neck, running his tongue along the cool skin, then lightly nipped the area at the base of his throat. Sav let go of his hand to grip the wheel, he tried to move away from him, but Joe quickly brought his right hand up to the side of his face and held him there.
“You know you want it.” Joe whispered in his ear, running his tongue along the outside and moved back to his throat. Sav was trying to stay on the road, he darted his eyes to look in the mirror again. He was losing the battle to stay in control and his fangs descended without warning.
“Joe…damnit.” Sav said in a soft growl. He pulled the car to the side of the road and got out. Leaving Joe leaning over in the seat. The passenger door opened and Sav pulled him from the car, shoving Joe back against it he went for his neck.
“What no kis…aahh.” Joe cried out from the suddenness for which Sav took him. Seconds later, that all too familiar tingle started to spread through out him. He could feel the blood being rapidly pulled from him and thought that maybe he had made a mistake in letting Sav do this, knowing how hungry he was and may not be able to stop.
Joe closed his eyes and thought about the first time that Sav had done this in the alley years ago, the times after that. It didn’t matter how many times that Sav was not in control, he always stopped before it was too late, always.
“Joe.”
The soft voice pulled him from his memoirs. “Umm.”
“Are you ok?”
He could only nod his answer.
“Come on, we have to go, the sun will be up soon.” Sav told him, helping him back in the car. What Sav had taken from him, zapped his energy and left him feeling exhausted. When Sav got in and revived up the car, he was grumbling to himself.
“What's wrong?” Joe asked.
“I shouldn’t have done that.”
“But I wanted you too.” Joe told him.
“You’re not well. The months of being locked up have left you weak because you didn’t get enough to eat.”
“And?”
“And…the fact that you're weak will cause your body to speed up the process of coming across.”
“And.”
“And...that’s it, I shouldn’t have…”
“But you did and it’s done.” Joe told him and lay back down, resting his head on Sav’s thigh. “Wake me up when we get
home.”
Sav looked down at him and cursed under his breath. He brushed the hair back from Joe’s face and studied his profile. He was tired, the past months were especially hard on him. After Amber left, he hardly slept at all, worrying himself to no end about if she was home and safe. The lines of fatigue where visible, as were the dark circles under his eyes. He had lost some weight, and would take him several days to get back his strength.
Pulling his worried gaze from the form in his lap, Sav eased the car back on the road. Hours later, he pushed his foot further down on the accelerator and flew down the highway at break neck speed to bet the fast approaching sunrise. He kept glancing at the horizon, the shades of darkness slowly fading as the sun crept higher. In less than thirty minutes it would be shinning right on him. Joe was in no shape to drive the rest of the way so he could hide in the trunk from its deadly rays.
He almost missed the driveway off the main road from going so fast. The car fishtailed as he made the turn and stomped on the gas, as long as he could make it inside the house before the sun breached the top of the trees he would be fine. The house came into view and he laid on the horn until he brought the car to a skidding halt, the tires sent gravel flying.
Sav flew from the car to the other side. Leaning in, he grabbed Joe’s arm and dragged him from the car.
“I knew I shouldn’t have given in to you.” Sav said under his breath. Putting his arm around his shoulder, he half dragged, half carried Joe to the house. Reaching the door, Sav kicked it in, it swung back so hard that the top came off the hinges as it banged into the wall. Going into the foyer, Phil and Rick were coming down the stairs.
“Oh shit, it is them!” Phil exclaimed.
”Joe, you have to wake up now.” Sav whispered in his ear. “We’re home.”
“What?” Joe groggily mumbled.
“We’re home.”
“We are…?” Joe blinked his eyes until they came in to more focus, then trying to stand on his own, but couldn't.
“Help me get him to the couch.” Sav asked them.
“Is he ok Sav?” Phil asked.
“Yes, he’ll be fine. He’s just exhausted and weak. Where’s Amber?” Sav asked.
“She’s upstairs asleep with Rebecca.” Phil told him.
They sat Joe on the couch and Sav kneeled in front of him, lightly patting his cheek to get him to wake up.
“He looks bad, maybe we should take him to the hospital.” Rick commented.
“We can’t. They’ll ask too many question about what happened.”
“They can help him there.”
“Rick get some juice or something, and several bottles.” Sav finally glanced at him.
“Sav your eyes. Why are they that color?” Rick took a step back, unsure of what he might do with so many around him.
“I’m having a little problem with my control and I’m starving. Now, go quickly before I lose it and I know you don’t want that to happen.”
Rick hurried from the room and returned carrying what he had asked for. Sav snatched one from Rick and drained it in a matter of seconds.
“What happened to his neck?” Phil asked turning Joe’s head, then lightly running his fingers over the deep bruising.
“Joe wake up.” Sav repeated. He only mumbled to leave him alone.
“Why doesn’t he wake up?”
“He insisted that I feed from him earlier, that’s why he’s like this.”
“You took too much.” Phil said.
“No, I barely took any. His body just couldn’t handle it.”
“You shouldn’t have done it then.” Rick told him.
“Come on,” Sav said more firmly and shook him. “Wake up!” yelling the words.
“Don’t yell Sav, hurts my head.” Joe rasped.
“Then wake the fuck up and I won’t have to.”
“Screw you Sav, just let me sleep.” Joe said and looked at him.
“Not until you drink this.” Sav pressed the bottle of juice in his hand.
Once he was aware of where he was, Sav got up from the couch. “Make sure he drinks all of it. I’ll be right back.”
“Sav.” Phil called out going over to him.
He stopped and turned to him. Phil didn’t say anything, just pulled him in for a tight embrace. “Its great to have you and Joe home safe.”
Phil released him and Rick came over and did the same thing.
“Thanks guys. You have no idea how much we missed everyone.”
“Sav is that you?” Rebecca called out.
He spun in her direction, upon seeing her beautiful face, his heart thumped wildly.
“Sav oh my….” She flew into his arms.
He breathed deeply of her scent, holding her tightly against him for a few minutes before words could form in his throat.
“I’ve missed you so much.” Sav breathed into her ear.
“I’ve missed you.” Rebecca sobbed and kissed his cheek. “Where’s Joe?”
“He’s in the living room.” Sav told her taking a step back. “I promised him that I would bring him home safely to you and Amber.” His eyes traveled down her body, easily noticing her bulging belly, something he didn't even feel it when he embraced her tightly just moments ago. Placing his hand gently over her, he couldn't help but smile. "Joe is going to be very happy when he finds out. Don't tell him yet, unless he is aware enough to realize it...he is a bit out of it at the moment."
“Thank you.” Rebecca said and hugged him again.
She released him and went to Joe. More sob’s escaped her when she saw him. Sitting beside him on the couch, she reached out her hand to touch his face, she couldn’t believe he was actually there. Joe opened his eyes and looked at her, new tears slid down his face as he pulled her into his arms. They remained that way for a long time, neither one wanting to let go of the other for fear that it was just a dream.
His emotions in turmoil, Nick was standing just inside the foyer, staring at Sav's back. Having came from the back of the house when he heard the commotion and loud voices. Then that all to familiar vibration that only belonged to Sav.
Sav watched them a moment before turning and headed out to find Nick. He didn’t have far to go, when he looked up, Nick was standing on the other side of the foyer. His steps faltered, then a new rush of anger swept through him. His strides picked up and he was on Nick in seconds, the rage clearly in his eyes to bore into Nick.
“I ought to kill for you this.” Sav hissed.
“I had nothing to with it.” Nick replied as calmly as he could.
“Lie! It was your way of getting back at me for whatever reason.”
“Rick, I tell you, I knew nothing of this.” Nick pleaded.
“I don’t believe you.”
“It was all Marcus’s idea, I didn’t kn……”
“Marcus is dead!” Sav shouted in his face. “I broke his neck and staked him in the sun, where he can never hurt Joe or my family again.”
“I would have done it myself, had I found him.” Nick told him.
“If I ever find out you had something to do with this, so help me, your fate will be the same.” The get is point deeply embedded in Nick's memory, Sav shoved his forearm harder against his throat.
“Sav, he didn’t.” Phil said from behind him.
Sav half way turned his head, then looked back at Nick.
“Taste my blood and you will know the truth.” Nick whispered, pulling his shirt collar back. Sav gripped his chin and pushed his head aside. Fangs bared, he sank them roughly in his vein. Nick sucked in his breath as Sav pushed them deeper, drawing out his deepest thoughts, he pulled away from him and wiped his mouth.
“Do you believe me now?” Nick whispered.
“I could still kill you for taking Amber’s blood.” he said angrily.
“I only did it to try and find you.”
“Never tell Joe of it. He’ll have your head on a platter.” Sav hissed.
“Sav, help me get Joe to bed.” Rebecca called him.
Taking one last look at Nick, Sav spun on his heels and quickly went over to them. Taking Joe’s arm, and most of the weight, he helped guide him upstairs.
***
Sav stared at Amber for a long time, resisting the urge to hold her. “Is she alright?” he asked Rebecca when she finished undressing Joe and got him settled in bed, where he quickly feel to sleep.
“She had nightmares when she first came home. They weren't so bad after the night Nick tasted her blood.”
Sav jerked his head in her direction. “And you let him?”
“I didn’t want to, but he said that it would help him find you and Joe.”
“You should have trusted me to do that.” Sav told her softly.
Rebecca shifted on her feet to stand in front of him and lightly touched his face, he leaned into her hand. “Yes I should have, but you didn’t see the desperation in his eyes.”
Sav pulled her close and buried his face in the sweet smell of her hair.
“Was she in the room at any time when this man did those things to you?” she asked pulling away from him.
“Just a couple of times that I remember.”
“She saw what happened, when Marcus hit Joe, when he beat you badly.”
Tears welled up in her eyes and slid down her cheeks, Sav kissed them away.
“I can tell you this, Marcus never touched him in that way, just long enough to distracted him so I could... kill him.”
“Joe didn’t see it did he?”
“That couldn’t be helped. I had to think fast when the opportunity presented itself, so I did and broke Marcus' neck right in front of him, then pulled him into the yard and drove a stake through his heart. I would have done anything else to spare him that, but it was the only way to be free of him.”
Rebecca looked down at Joe. “Do you think he’ll have nightmares?”
“If he does, we can help him through those.” Sav leaned back some to get a better look at her stomach, once again placing his hands there. “I can hear his heartbeat.”
“His?” Rebecca said questionably.
“Well….I don’t know that.” Sav told her.
“Are you happy for us?”
Sav beamed a smile at her. “What, are you kidding? Although, I will miss making love to you while you’re pregnant.”
“Why can’t you?”
“To dangerous for the baby. I’ll just have to go else where.”
“Oh.” Rebecca said looking at the floor.
Sav placed his fingers under her chin to raise her head, “Hey, why so gloomy?”
“I’m just going to miss the time we spend together.”
“Rebecca, you should be marrying Joe in a couple of months. It wouldn’t be right if we did that.”
“That hasn’t bothered you in the past.”
“No it hasn’t, but it will be different then.”
“No different then it is now. Just because our name is on paper doesn’t mean anything.”
Sav looked at her a moment. “Do you still love him?”
“What kind of question is that, of course it do?”
“That’s not the way it sounded to me.”
“Sav I do love him and…” Rebecca looked down at the floor again.
“And?” Sav gently prided.
“I love you.”
“Some day you will have to choose, and before you make that decision, think it over long and hard. You have no idea of Joe’s true feelings for you, but I do. I see it in his blood every time. What do you think kept him going the whole time we were there?”
“Coming home to me and Amber.” She said softly.
“And now this one.” He told her touching her stomach. “After you’re married, it will be Joe’s decision weather or not he lets me spend time with you. What ever he tells me, I’ll live by. Don’t get me wrong, I want you just like before.”
Rebecca reached up and caressed his face, pulling him to her lips, she kissed him. Sav returned it and pulled her closer to him.
“I’m tired, it’s been a long time since I’ve had any good sleep.”
Rebecca whispered in his ear. “Then come to bed.”
“Not yet. I want to take a shower and wash off the past months from my skin.”
“Ok, then you can come to bed.”
Sav quickly kissed her again and disappeared in the bathroom. She climbed in bed with Joe and scooted in front of him. His arm went around her waist and he mumbled in her ear.
A short time later, Sav emerged from the bathroom, feeling better after his shower, standing there looking down at Amber sleeping peacefully in her bed as he towel dried his hair. Tossing his wet towels on the chair, he climbed in bed behind Joe, draping his arm around both of them. It was easier being this close to him now, having drank several bottles to satisfy his hungry. After months of being separated, just out of reach from him, having to worry about what Marcus was going to do next where Joe was concerned. The emotional toll it took on Sav to see him live in that hell and finally getting free of it. He was now able to release all the anguish and frustration he kept inside.
Joe shifted his body and turned to him slightly. As tired as he was, he felt Sav in his mind, felt his emotions clearly and what they meant. Joe laced his fingers through his, pulling it up to place a light kiss in Sav’s palm, holding it tight against his chest, he drifted back to sleep.
Sav was just drifting off to sleep himself when he sensed movement in the room, lurking in the shadows. He saw Nick move toward the bed, standing over them, watching. Nick leaned over reaching for Joe’s arm, Sav’s hand shot out and stopped him.
“What are you doing?” he asked softly.
Nick had expected him to do that. “He’s dehydrated. I was going to give him some fluids to help him.” he held up the bag for him to see.
"Where did you get that?"
"I replenished the immediate medical supplies after the house burned down. Having mortal's in my home, it is necessary to have them close at hand."
Sav released his hand and watched Nick insert the needle, then start the flow of the fluid. When he was finished, he hesitantly reached over and ran his fingers along Sav’s jaw. Silent words passed between them. Nick didn’t have to tell him how relieved he was to finally see him home. He stood abruptly, spun on his heels and left the room.
