"Without a sense of confidence,
I'm convinced that there's just
Too much pressure to take."

Carrie eyed the outfit skeptically.
Laura, her manger, frowned, "It's not a bikini."
The negotiations for the fitness magazine's photo shoot had finally ended with both sides coming to an agreement.
"No."
"But it's not a bikini," Laura pointed out again.
"It's a bra. What's the difference?" Carrie asked, her voice rising a few pitches.
"It's a sports bra," Laura corrected. "And there's a huge difference."
"No."
"Carrie..." she said gently. "These people have been very patient with you."
"Patient with me? I'm sorry, but they are the ones that asked me to be on the cover. I'm doing this for them. I don't need to be on this magazine to sell albums, but they want my picture to sell copies. And I know that may be diva-ish, but I damn well will be a diva when it comes to not wanting to do something I don't feel comfortable with."
"Don't make a big deal out of nothing."
"I'm not parading around in a bra," Carrie replied. "You know I don't like showing my stomach. Put me in a pair of short shorts and a shirt...fine, but you know how I feel about showing my midsection."
"Quit being so stubborn," Laura demanded. "Look, you know I look out for you, that is my top priority, but damn it Carrie, you're behaving like a child right now."
Carrie narrowed her eyes, "I need a break."
"Where are you going?" Laura asked as the country singer stood up.
"I'm going for a walk," Carrie replied over her shoulder as she walked out of the make-up trailer. She folded her arms tightly as she walked down the gravel pathway, kicking the rocks out of frustration. She sighed, pulling out her phone, dialing quickly.
"Hey," she heard a slow, thick drawl greet from the other end.
Carrie felt herself smiling as she stopped to lean against a tree, "Hey back."
"Whatcha doin'?"
Carrie laughed softly. She had forgotten how thick the Texan's accent was in the morning. She looked at her phone quickly. It was seven-thirty in the morning in New York, which meant it was six-thirty in Nashville. She knew Kelly had probably been in the studio till God knows what time the night before. "You were sleeping?"
"Mmhmm."
"I'm sorry for waking you," Carrie commented as she sat down beneath the tree.
" 'S ok," Kelly replied. "We haven't actually talked in a couple days, and if I remember right our last conversation was 'bout pumpkin pie."
Carrie giggled.
"What?"
"Say pie again."
"Ugh," Kelly groaned, rubbing her eyes. "It's not nice to tease me when I'm not awake."
"But you say it funny even when you are awake, I think that's how we got on the topic in the first place."
"Whatever," Kelly mumbled, pulling her blankets up to her chin.
"And you promised me you'd make me one."
"I did, and I will."
"Good," Carrie smiled. "I got your email."
"The one with the dog surfing?"
"Yea."
"You should show it to Ace. Tell him I'll take him one day."
Carrie laughed, "I have to say Miss Clarkson, I do love the emails and texts we trade, but it is nothing compared to actually getting to talk to you."
"Mm, tell it to Narvel," Kelly yawned. "He's the one that's keeping this record going so swiftly. I told him about what Jason and I were thinking with the fifth album and stuff, and he fully agreed."
"Yea, Laura has me going nonstop too."
"So...what's gotten you so upset?" she asked curiously.
"Who says I'm upset?"
"I just know these things."
"Have you managed to get into the studio with Cory, yet?"
"No, not yet, we have to keep pushing it back because we're both booked to the max right now, but don't change the subject. Don't you have a photo shoot this morning? You're still having trouble with what they want you to wear?"
"Yea," Carrie frowned. "It's not a bikini, but a sports bra instead."
"What's the difference? Maybe a little less cleavage, but pretty much the same amount of skin, right?"
"That's what I said."
"They're giving you a hard time?"
"Laura said I was being childish."
"Care, you are not being childish," Kelly assured her. "You don't have to do or wear anything that makes you feel uncomfortable. And I have to say, the fact that you're standing up for that seems pretty freaking mature to me."
Carrie gave a soft laugh.
"Can I just say something, though?"
"Yea, go ahead."
"Your midsection is amazing."
Carrie could feel her cheeks blushing.
"But if you want my advice, here's what I think you should do: go find the stylist for the shoot and the director of photography and the three of y'all go through all the clothes and find something you can all agree on. I'm sure there's plenty of things that you will feel comfortable in and that they will think is perfect for the photo shoot."
"Yea, that sounds good."
"Good."
"Ok, thanks, Kell, and I'm sorry for waking you."
"It's ok. You know you can call me anytime you need. And if they still give you trouble about what they want you to wear, tell them to call me, and I'll tell them where they can stick their bra, or better yet, the clothes hanger for it."
Carrie smiled, shaking her head, "Thank you...go back to sleep now."
"Sounds like a plan," she yawned, hanging up the phone after a quick good-bye.

"You say goodnight,
In my mind,
I'm sleeping next to you."

Carrie stretched out on the sofa in her hotel suite. Ace was curled up on her stomach, sound asleep as she flipped through the television channels, waiting for the phone call she knew was coming. Kelly had finally been able to get into the studio with Cory. She was nervous to see what type of mood the Texan would be in once they were finished.
Her phone started to ring on the nearby coffee table. Ace picked his head up, just long enough to be able to growl at her phone for waking him before he went back to sleep. Carrie laughed, scratching behind his ears as she reached for her phone.
"Hey," she greeted cautiously.
"H-hey," she heard the shaky reply.
Carrie's heart sunk at the sound of the shorter idol crying in her ear. "It's ok, sweetie," she tried to soothe.
"Not...not really," Kelly managed.
"It was a rough day, huh?" Carrie asked, keeping her voice as gentle as possible. "Were y'all able to finish both songs?"
The Texan choked back a sob.
"Kell?"
"Y-yea."
"Well baby, that means your done with them now, right? You don't have to go through that anymore."
"Yea," Kelly replied, her voice cracking.
"Where are you right now?"
"Parked in your driveway."
"You've been driving like this?" Carrie asked worriedly.
"I didn't hit anything."
"You weren't ready to go home," she noted.
"They--they'd ask questions."
"Yea," Carrie nodded. "Ok, well, turn your car off and go to my front door."
"I don't want to move," Kelly replied softly.
"I know, but this will help you feel better. Trust me?"
"Ok," she sniffed, attempting to wipe some tears away as she got out of her car, wrapping her arms around her stomach tightly as she walked to the front door. "Ok."
"Now, there's a spare key in the flower pot, hanging on the right side of the door. Go ahead and use it to let yourself in."
Kelly followed her instructions, reaching up to place her hand in the flower pot, searching blindly until she felt the key. She used it to unlock the door.
"Now go on upstairs to my room."
"Care, I can just...I'll be fine on the couch."
"Don't argue with me," Carrie said firmly. "Go."
Kelly did as she was told, making her way up to Carrie's room.
"You remember where the pajamas are?"
"Y-yea."
"Ok, go ahead and change into something comfortable."
"Alright." she placed her cell phone down as she dug through the dresser. She nearly broke down again as she noticed the t-shirt Carrie had bought her with 'Texas' written across the chest.
"Ok?" Carrie asked, hearing her pick up the phone again.
"Yea."
"Now go on and snuggle up in bed."
Kelly climbed into the big bed, pulling the blankets tightly around her as more tears fell down her cheeks.
"Feeling any better?"
"A l-little."
"Kell, it's going to be ok," Carrie assured her. "I know today must've been extremely hard on you, but in the end, it's only going to help you heal."
"I still miss her," Kelly admitted.
"Me too."
"I miss you."
"You too," Carrie nodded. "You wanna try and get some sleep?"
"Y-you'll stay on the phone with m-me?"
"Of course," she promised.
