Daniel slumped down on a sofa.
He was missing Darren. He never knew he’s gonna miss him so much. He was getting silly, he even missed his clothes all around the house.
Damn, Jones, you’re so silly… He’s gone for barely half a day …
Daniel sipped his beer.
Damn it. Damn it. Damn it.
I shouldn’t have let him go. I will lose him.
It has never worked. Distance relationships never worked for Daniel. Even if the distance was just a 15 minutes drive.
What a life you’ve got, Daniel Jones! When you are just about to be able to afford the house you always wanted to have to yourself, you sit there aching over someone you used to share a one bedroom flat with?
They didn’t even talk about it any more after that night. It was taken for granted. Darren quickly found a new place. Daniel helped him with moving. This was actually the first afternoon Daniel realized that it has actually happened. Happened indeed.
Another beer.
Lonely? Was he lonely? Bullshit! He was never lonely. Personal space – those magical words. Now he has plenty.
Images of Darren curled up on a sofa, his tears in Daniel’s shirt and his hands around Daniel’s waist, those images run through his mind. Darren’s quiet sobs in the middle of the night. Darren hated to be alone.
“You’ve been with him too long”, Daniel thought aloud, “the drama of it all!”
He actually laughed.
He heard a mobile beep somewhere.
A text message.
“Dinner? D”
Now aren’t we talking anymore?
Daniel smiled when texting back, “Are you taking me out? D”
He looked at the phimpaimpatiently. It beeped sooner than he would have expected anyways…
“My treat, but YOU are taking ME out! D”
Daniel chuckled. He took his time answering.
“8:30, Wild Orchid. D”
Daniel wanted to drive to the restaurant, cause he wanted to stay sober for Darren, but decided against it. His head wasn’t fully recovered from all the beer. He got in a taxi and actually wondered how this evening is gonna end. He was … wow…. He was nervous!
Darren was late. Of course, Daniel smiled inwardly. Couldn't be different. He was already on a second glass of water by the time Darren arrived.
Dressed to kill, Daniel thought as he watched Darren walk across the room to their table. He was swinging his hips in the same innocent way he did back then when they were still poor and struggling. Only now his hips were covered in 500 dollars worth of leather. He was wearing a deep blue button down shirt, three top buttons open. Probably innocently left open by accident. Or more likely left open with a specific target to drive Daniel insane.
They both grinned.
Desire to kiss at least a quick hello. Damn. Daniel gestured to an empty seat across the table from him, not being able to take his eyes off Darren’s neck and chest.
Darren sat down, looking suspiciously at Daniel’s glass of water.
“Vodka straight or is it that you actually want to impress me?” He chuckled at Daniel.
Daniel raised his eyes to meet Darren’s but he was looking somewhere else - around the room.
He reached for a menu and gently placed his hand over Daniel’s.
“Hello, Danny”
Daniel’s eyes finally met Darren’s deep blue gaze. Looking straight through him.
“Been missing me already?” He smiled, removing his hand and taking the menu.
“Yeah, hence the water. Had too much beer in the afternoon, I am almost hangovered,” Daniel laughed. He couldn’t figure out what to say and it didn’t make sense to lie anyways.
They looked at each other for a moment. Smile disappearing from Daniel’s face. Daniel was sincere. Darren seemed to try to reach for his hand again, but a waiter appeared out of nowhere, ready to take their orders.
“Moet Chandon. A bottle.” Darren started ordering.
The evening passed by in a silent peace. Champagne warmed Daniel’s heart.
A few touches of hands. A few burning glances over posh champagne glasses. A few daring smiles.
“Want to hit the nightlife, hun?” Darren asked as he was picking up the bill.
“Hell yes!” Anything not to let you go home.
They got into a taxi and headed downtown. The nightlife was happening there.
Darren was sitting almost sideways, his back pressed to the door of the car. Daniel reflected his position, sitting on the other side of the back seat and looking at his lover. They did not say a word. Some strange language traveled between them. Darren smiled. Daniel shook his head in return.
Games, huh? Champagne was getting into Daniel’s head. He wanted to play.
They entered a disco bar that smelled like smoke and sweat through and through.
It was a regular Thursday night. Not too busy. Not completely dead either. They easily made their way trough the room right to the bar area. Daniel sat down at the bar, he wasn’t a dancing kind. Darren stood next to him.
“I shouldn’t have dragged you here, I am sorry” Darren leaned closer to say that.
“No, I wanted to come” Daniel answered.
“You did?” Darren softly brushed a back of his hand over a side of Daniel’s tight, “how many times would you like to come?”
Daniel turned to look at Darren’s face. He had to catch his breath at Darren sliding an arm around his waist and putting a finger through a loop of his jeans, pulling his closer.
He whispered in Daniel’s ear, “Fuck the going out. Your place or mine?”
