Chapter Nine: The Recovery
The ambulance pulled up in front of the shop as some paramedics arrived. They took out a stretcher and brought it inside. The two men then took Eve’s body out of the shop on the stretcher and put her into the ambulance. It drove away, leaving a hysterical Karen standing in the doorway. She was shaking as the police arrested the felon who almost robbed her. She was shaking as they asked her a million questions in one minute. When Mike and Greg arrived, she was still shaking.
It was so emotional. The two boys drove Karen to the hospital after her friend to make sure everything would be alright. They knew the blonde would need surgery and that they would have to wait for a long time in an uncomfortable situation. They also knew that things would probably get worse. One thing they were really sure of was the fact that Karen would need some counseling from now on. Who knew what she would do now?
“It’s all my fault, ya know?” She said from the back of the car to break the silence. Mike looked sympathetically at her as a fake laugh emerged from her mouth, “I should have been the one who got shot…”
“Karen…” Mike whispered to quiet her. She sobbed again.
“It’s true!!! It’s true!” She cried into her hands.
At the next stoplight, Mike jumped back to her. He held her close as her hot tears soaked a bit of his shirt. She stayed like that for a long while, not wanting to move or breathe. She felt so horrible. The only thing Mike and Greg could do for her now was bring her to the infirmary to see Eve. They understood that seeing her friend in this condition would probably upset her more, but the two girls were like family. They needed each other.
Once at the hospital, the three of them were directed to wait in the waiting area. It was already five in the morning. Karen began to fidget with things like her necklace or finger nails. Soon, she was pacing around the room, nervous as all hell. Greg got up and sat her back down. He tried to calm her nerves by rubbing her back. She took deep breaths and tried to tell herself that everything would be fine. After a while, the excitement wore her out and she fell asleep in one of the chairs.
“I can’t believe all of this happened in one week. It’s just another bad thing to add onto the list for Black Week.” Greg sat down next to Mike.
Mike sighed, “I know. Poor Karen.” He looked over at her, “Do you think Eve will be alright?”
“Of course. From what I’ve learned, Eve was shot in the shoulder twice. You can’t die from that. They got her here fast enough so she wouldn’t lose a lot of blood.” He rubbed his temples.
“We just have to worry about Karen.”
“Maybe we can get her a therapist?”
“She won’t go. She’s too stubborn. Besides, she already has Eve. That seems to work out nicely enough.” Mike chuckled.
“Very true, my friend. Very true indeed.” He laughed too.

It was the next day when Orlando heard the news. He had woken up early for once for that photo shoot he needed to go to. The second he woke up, he felt drowsy and irate. He was awake early enough to catch the morning news. About halfway through the entire broadcast about some nonsense, they reported the break-in. At first, he shrugged it off, thinking it was some stupid store. The anchorman said something about a music store, which drew the actor’s attention back to the screen. Another five minutes of the report, and he was out of the door and heading to the hospital.
Upon bursting into the front doors to the hospital, he woke Karen. She drowsily focused her eyes on Orlando as the hospital smells reminded her of where she was. More tears were shed as she explained to him what happened. He said something about how he should have stayed with the two girls, but Karen disregarded it. Then, the actor sat down with them and relaxed. They were still waiting for Eve’s operation five hours after she was shot.
((AN: FWI, it’s like eight o’clock in the morning now…))
After fidgeting with her nails and hair for another half hour, they were allowed to see Eve. A nurse had escorted the group of four to the blonde’s room. They sat around the beeping monitors and random machines around the room. An oxygen mask rested atop Eve’s mouth and nose. Karen silently broke down again. She held onto her best friend’s fragile hand and sat down beside the bed. How much worse could all this make her feel?
The boys sat in a state of somewhat silence. All they really heard was the beeping of the heart monitor and the pumping of oxygen into Eve’s system. Karen fell asleep on the side of the bed, clutched the blonde’s hand. Greg left the room for a little while to talk to the doctor about Eve’s condition. He came back with news she would leave in about two weeks, and that she would be fine once she healed up. Mike then left for some coffee for the group. Orlando and Greg were left in the room.
“You have competition.” Greg said out of nowhere to the actor’s surprise.
“What are you saying?” He turned to the blonde doctor.
“You like Karen, don’t you?” He smirked, an all knowing visage taking him over. Orli blushed and nodded, hiding his face after, “So does Mike. That’s what I was saying.”
“So what? I’m not going to give up that easily.”
“I didn’t say you had to. Just take it easy with him. He’s obsessed.” He ended the conversation with that as the devil himself ((mike you nimrods)) walked in.
“Did I miss something?” He gave the two their coffee as they shook their heads. Mike then tapped Karen a couple of times to wake her and gave her a cup of hot chocolate.
“Thanks….” She muttered, taking it and rubbing her eyes simultaneously.
About a half an hour more of silence in the room and Karen was done with her drink. She sat there still pondering what to do about the situation. If Eve was crippled from this, her life would never be the same. All her dreams of doing fun and exciting things would be crushed. How would she carry on? Why did this have to happen at a time like this? She stood up and left the room. Karen just couldn’t stand to be in there any longer. The three men looked at each other as she walked out of the room.
“I’ll get her.” Orlando stood and left as well.
“Might as well stay here and watch over Sleeping Beauty for Karen, eh Mike?” Greg stopped him from leaving.
“I guess…..” He muttered before sitting down.
- - -[Follow her, dude!]- - -
“That’ll be four fifty, lil lady.” The thrift store owner demanded of Karen for the pack of cigarettes she had in her hand. She forked over the money and told the guy to keep the change.
A cigarette was already lit and in her mouth by the time she was down the block. Karen knew it would only get harder from here. Even if Eve was going to be fine, she was still shot by some maniac robbing the shop. It was all her fault for not being able to stop him. And it would continue to be her fault until Eve was perfectly fine and she had forgiven her. But right now, she really needed to relax. That was what the cigarette was for.
She took another drag as someone asked from behind her, “May I have a smoke?”
Karen turned to find Orlando. She pulled out an extra cigarette for him and handed it over, offering a light as well. She let some smoke escape her slightly parted lips as the wind blew past. Black strands fell into her face as she began to walk with him down the street. Finally, she stopped them to talk.
“I never knew you smoked.” She commented.
“You never asked.” He smiled and puffed out some smoke.
“I just assumed that you didn’t because you said something about me smoking.” A sad smile crept onto her face as she tossed the butt down and put it out with her foot.
“Oh well. It’s old news anyways.” He smiled at her and put out his cigarette as well.
They walked on in silence. The bitter cold and random people on the street were their only company. Karen didn’t cry or sniff for the longest time, she just kept her pace with Orli. It seemed to him that they were pushing painfully beyond an unbreakable barrier. This whole ordeal had everyone going completely mental. The gloomy surroundings didn’t help very much either. The hobos and trash everywhere just made things seem worse then they were. Orlando put an arm around her to protect her from some unseen danger. She smiled as their visible breath mingled together. He brought her to a large apartment building.
“This is where I stay when I’m in New York.” He unlocked the front door to get in.
“It’s nice.” She looked around the building as they walked down the hallway to his room.
He unlocked the door at the end of the hallway and allowed her entrance to a nicely decorated room. There were a couple of rooms in his apartment: a bedroom, bathroom, living room, and kitchen. Considering the fact that he was (now) a bachelor living on his own, the place was very neat. He seemed to clean up well. There weren’t many things on the walls or shelves, but there were some items on the tables in the room. These items included random candles and books scattered everywhere, c.d.’s also managed to squeeze their way into some papers.
“I really like your place, Orli.” She sat down on the couch, “But why am I here?”
“We’re here so I can cheer you up!” He plopped down next to her, “So I can take all those bad thoughts away and make it better.” He whispered seductively into her ear and pulled her close.
Karen gasped a little at his actions, but felt that she couldn’t stop him now. His touch seemed to be exactly what she needed and a thought popped into her head. How can he do this to her and take away all this pain? She had almost completely lost her best friend, and now, a guy was kissing her neck and running his fingers up her thighs. She closed her eyes and twined her hands into his hair as pleasure overtook her. But things were getting a little intense, and she wasn’t sure if this was what she wanted from Orlando.
She gasped loudly as he found the right spot on her neck. Orlando’s hands began to work their magic in other areas. One was massaging her lower back slowly, whilst the other was moving its way up her shirt. Their lips found each other as chills ran up her spine. Karen couldn’t believe this was happening, and with a famous actor to boot! ((Yeah, I’m jealous too…)) ((Editor: Me three... grr)) Suddenly she realized what was about to happen next. The shop owner wasn’t sure if she was ready to do what Orlando was planning.
He pulled away and looked into her eyes, searching for the sign that would tell him to move onward. She was breathing a little harder than usual, but her mind was racing, trying to find a way out of this situation. Orli was hovering above her, as they were now lying down, and for some odd reason, he just couldn’t read the expression on her face. He felt he needed to know if they were going to continue or not.
The actor bent down to kiss her again, when a cell phone went off. They both jumped up into a sitting position as Karen reached over and grabbed her cell phone. She pressed a button and answered the call.
“H-hello? Oh, hey Mike!” She looked at Orlando still a little breathless from their activities, “Nothing, nothing. How’s Eve? Alright. I’ll be right there.” She hung up and rubbed her temples.
“What’s going on?” He tried to sound calm, even though he was pissed that Mike had stopped them from doing anything.
“The doctors want to talk about what to do next. We’ve gotta get back to the hospital.” She stood up and fixed herself before heading to the door. Orlando followed her, though still a little mad. They went back to the hospital together in silence.
