Day 18
It had been a few days since Paige had gotten the last letter from the kidnapper. Getting the letters was like getting a map to Raiden. Each letter revealed something new about what the kidnapper wanted. She still wasn’t sure as to what exactly they meant for she had never been very good at deciphering poetry. She cried herself to sleep most nights and Cone was beginning to try and decipher the letters himself, but wasn’t having much luck. He now sat at the desk in Paige’s old bedroom and had a copy of both letters in front of him. He rubbed his head for he had another headache from lack of sleep. He hadn’t had a good night’s rest since Raiden was kidnapped. He would nap but not sleep. His body was beginning to have a reaction to not sleeping. The letters didn’t make any sense. They kept stating that what the kidnapper wanted was something close to Paige, something that he wanted bad enough to kidnap Raiden. Paige walked into the room and placed her hands on Cone’s shoulders knowing that his head was bothering him again. She knew that he was trying to break the code of the rhyming couplets. He gently took one of her hands and kissed it before turned his attention back to the letters still with his head throbbing. Paige sighed.
“Jay, you sure you don’t want anything?” She asked softly. She was about to go to the kitchen and force herself to eat again. The first two days she didn’t eat at all and knew that she was going to have to keep her strength if she had any hope of getting her son back. Cone shook his head for he wasn’t hungry.
“No, I’m fine. I gotta figure this out. He wants something close to you so it can’t be money, you give too much of that away. It can’t be your music ‘cuz the fans already have that and it sure as hell can’t be anything we own.” Suddenly it hit him and Paige at the same time. Cone took Paige’s hand. “No.” He stated firmly.
“He wants me, Jay. Me in exchange for Raiden. It fits. ‘Something close to you’. Oh my God, he wants me Jay.” She walked over and sat on the bed. Cone jumped up and sat next to her. He took her hand in his. “He wants me. The letters were addressed to me. Now I guess we just wait for him to act.” She stated softly. Cone didn’t know what to do. Paige had already made up her mind.
“Paige, I’m not gonna let this creep take you. We’ll find another way.” Paige stopped him.
“Jay, if he wants me he can have me. I’ve lived my life, but Raiden hasn’t. I’ll always live inside of him. I don’t care what happens to me. Raiden is more important.” She stated before she stood and walked out of the room. She walked down the stairs and opened the door. There upon the ground was another letter. “Jay!” She screamed up the stairs. Cone ran down as fast as he could and soon found Paige with another letter in her hands. He began to read over her shoulder as she read also.
Dear Mommy,
Why do you cry?
I see the tears fall from your eye
I have done you a favor
I’ve taken away the unsought flavor
Raiden got in your way
Now he’ll be dead come the day
Unless in truth you want him alive
In that case, put your car in drive
Wait Dear Mommy a moment longer
We still must address our barter
I will call with the destination
Make sure you have my ice cream man and his motivation.
Cone looked out into the room. It wasn’t Paige the man wanted it was him. Paige turned her hand upon her mouth. She now knew what the kidnapper wanted and things were beginning to come together in her eyes. “Jay, you don’t have to do this.” She whispered. Cone shook his head.
“Yes I do. Our son’s life is at stake and I’m not going to sit by and watch him die, not if I can save him.” He stated. Paige closed her eyes as the tears began to fall. She was getting her son back but in exchange for her husband. Cone took Paige in his arms. “We’re gonna figure this out. We’ve gotta get to that station and let them know what’s going on. Raiden’s coming home, Paige. Even if I have to die to get him here.” With that said they both ran out the door and headed towards the station.
The detective couldn’t believe that they had figured it out from only one clue. He was concerned about what they were going to do. He didn’t believe in sacrificing one life for another but the love of a parent towards a child is unbreakable and undeniable. Cone had his mind made up and Paige supported him in his cause. She was going to go with him and protect him and her son. They were going to get Raiden back together. Cone was sitting in one of the chairs.
“We’re sending a team with you. You’re not going on your own, not at all and we’re going to tap your phone Mrs. McCaslin.” Paige shook her head. She knew the kidnapper wouldn’t like that at all.
“No, before we plan all this out we’re waiting for that call. You people aren’t tapping my phone ‘cuz that just may jeopardize my son’s life. I’m sorry but I’m not willing to do that.” With that Paige stood and was going to walk out the door before Cone took hold of her arm. He turned to the detective.
“When we know the destination why don’t you send in like undercover cops to watch over the place. Then Paige and I will get Raiden and send him out to you guys. Paige and I, we’re,” he paused and took her hand. “We’re willing to die for him.” He stated firmly. Paige nodded and the detective smiled.
“I’ve never seen more loving parents then the two of you. Raiden is very lucky to have you both.” He stated. Paige began to squirm. Her phone was on vibrate in her pocket. She quickly grabbed her phone and hit talk.
“Hello?” She asked.
“Mommy?” It was Raiden. Paige looked over at Cone her eyes filling with tears.
“Raiden, honey, are you OK?” She asked and didn’t receive an answer for another came on the line and she could hear Raiden scream. “No! Put him back on the phone! Raiden!” She screamed. The new voice was masked and distorted. Paige was staring at Cone.
“Dear Mommy,
Raiden will survive
As long as my ransom does not die
The time is near
For the drop off dear
At six in the afternoon
Before the raising of the moon
The day will approach
Tomorrow will reproach
You will drive by the place
Don’t you dare bring a can of mace
A weapon will only produce
The death of the one I use
The Coliseum is where I’ll be
Bring my ransom and I’ll set Raiden free.” With that the line went dead. Paige had a fresh trail of tears as she closed her phone and wiped the tears form her eyes. Cone took hold of her shoulders for he was now standing.
“Paige where is he!” Cone screamed. She buried her face in his chest and pulled back a moment later.
“The Coliseum. He said don’t bring a weapon and to be there at six tomorrow.” She paused looking into Cone’s eyes. “Raiden talked to me Jay. He’s really alive.” She said as Cone pulled her into his arms. They were truly going to get their son back. Now all that was left for them to do was get everything ready for the tradeoff the next day. Raiden was coming home.
That night Deryck sat in Skye’s room with her while she packed up the majority of her stuff. She was moving all of her possessions in with him once they were in the general direction of going to Ajax. The tour had been canceled and Deryck needed to get Skye out of her parents’ house for they still believed that he was going to leave Skye the moment the baby was born. He couldn’t leave now, not that he had planned to, but seeing how a family could be torn apart he knew he’d never be able to leave Skye’s side. She soon sat beside him and laid down on the bed. She had little energy today. He kissed her gently on the forehead as she cuddled up to him.
“Skye, I love you.” He stated as she sighed. She didn’t need to say anything back for he already knew how she felt. Soon Deryck began to think of all the things that were happening. He remembered how Paige and Cone had managed to get through so much in their time together and hoped that he and Skye would be able to do the same. Suddenly in hit him like a ton of bricks. He knew who had taken Raiden. He only hoped that it wasn’t too late. He reached for his phone causing Skye to get worried as he dialed Cone’s number. He ended up getting Cone’s voice mail. He left a message and dialed Paige’s phone. She didn’t answer either for her phone was sitting in her purse after having received the phone call from the kidnapper. Deryck kissed Skye goodbye and headed out of the house in search of them.
