Chapter Nine
She couldn’t believe that she was really standing here – in front of his house, ringing the bell. She didn’t know if she really wanted him to come and open the door and
was just about to turn around when she suddenly heard steps. Oh no. So he was home. The door was opened, but to her surprise by a young lady. “Oh, hi, is Orlando
there?” she grumbled. The woman didn’t react. She was fairly pretty, long blond hair, curvaceous, but slim body, long legs hidden in low waist jeans. “And who are you if
I may ask?” The tone of her voice was cold, but nor unfriendly. “I…I’m Katie” she stuttered. “He knows me!” Damn you! You’ve known him already when this bitch was
still in school! She cursed herself. For some reason every woman that came near Orlando was a bitch for her. “Well, I’ll go and see whether he wants to receive a visitor.”
And with these words she shut the door. Katie gasped, Bitch! She thought. A few minutes later, minutes that seemed to be an eternity for Katie and where she was about
to leave again, the door was opened again. This time it was Orlando. He was wearing casual jeans and a t-shirt, his hair was in a complete mess. He stared at Katie for a
few seconds, but then gestured for her to come in. This probably was the first time that she wasn’t able to read his expression – and that made her even more nervous.
“Uh well...uhm hi!” he stuttered. At that moment the other woman came downstairs. “Oh, Lindsay, that’s Katie.” He gestured for her to come over. “Katie, that’s Lindsay
my PA. We’ve just been going through some text for my new role.” Then he turned to Lindsay. “I told you about Katie. We’ve been close friends for ages…” Suddenly
Lindsay’ face brightened up. “Oh my God, I’ve heard so much about you! It’s really nice too meet you.” She shook Katie’s hand with a warm smile. Maybe not such a
bitch after all…Katie returned the polite greeting with the same warm smile. Then Lindsay turned around “Well, I guess I’ll let you guys catch up a bit and…uh…walk the
dog.” Having said this she immediately left the room to find the dog Orlando didn’t have.
“Well, uhm would you like a drink?” she nodded and then sat down in the living-room. Orlando sat down beside her with a bottle of water and two glasses. Once again
she wondered how gorgeous this man had turned out to be, who would have thought it back then, when he had been lying in hospital unable to move at all.
“Listen,” he started, “I wanted to apologize for what I have said there last week. It just wasn’t appropriate; you’ve been through a lot. I’m sorry, I was just so upset.” His
voice was fading, he stared at her belly and then to the floor. Suddenly Katie felt her heart melt away. Tears fought their way to her eyes. She licked her lip, “I” she
cleared her throat, “I didn’t do it.”
“What?” He stared at her.
“I didn’t have the abortion. I’m still…I want to raise it.”
For a few seconds, another eternity, he kept on staring at her. Then without any further words he leaned forward and kissed her gently. Katie backed up, but then gave
in to his kisses. A feeling of pure happiness rushed over her as she wrapped her arms around him and pulled him towards her. He broke the kiss and looked at her, his
brown eyes full of passion and his desire for her. “We’re gonna do this together, ok? I’ll help you and give you everything I can.” He whispered. “We’ll be fine.” She
answered and pulled him towards her again kissing him gently. Orlando hugged her tightly and deepened the kiss. “You know that I’m never gonna let you two go
again?” he whispered gently into her ear. “I know and I love you and always will.” Suddenly Katie pulled away. She gasped and her face turned pale. Her whole body
ached. It felt as if someone was tearing her baby out of her body. She let out a painful scream and wrapped her hands tightly around her own body as if to protect the
young life that was growing inside of her. But it didn’t seem to help, there was blood everywhere. She saw Orlando as if he was far away; he had tears in his eyes and
just stared at her obviously unable to move. Then his figure blurred and everything around her became dark.
Katie sat up in bed trying hard to catch her breath. Sweat all over her face she reached for the glass of water she always had beside her bed. Finally she fell back into her
pillows her breath slowed down and she gradually recovered from her dream, but was still unable to fall asleep again. She was too upset.
At about the same time Orlando was lying in his bed staring at the ceiling. His heart was racing. That dream had felt so real. If he closed his eyes he could still feel
Katie’s lips on his. He had to talk to her again. He couldn’t just let her do this. There had to be a way for both of them. He checked his watch: 5 am. There was no way
he would fall asleep again, so he got up and went to have a shower.

Katie had been staring at her toast for the last five minutes. “You know it’s not gonna eat itself, do you?”
Katie shot her sister an angry glare. “I know…I don’t think I’m hungry.”
“You have to eat something, sis. Come on, you can’t leave the house with an empty stomach.”
“Oh, talking about leaving the house…Can you drop me off in town later on?”
“No.”, Anna’s voice was cold and definite. Not the kind of voice you would object to. “Firstly, I have to take the kids to school and secondly, I told you I won’t support this
and I meant it.”
Katie growled. There were moments when she actually hated her sister. “Okay, I’ll call a taxi then.”
“Katie,” Anna called her back. “Think about it again. Don’t make such a horrible mistake…”
“Oh Anna, you know I love you but I’m gonna have to kill you if you’re gonna go through this again.” Katie sighed.
“No, Katie, you will not kill the mother of three children and we will go through this again. You cannot expect you older sister to sit there and watch when you’re about to
make the biggest mistake of your life!”
Katie fell back into her chair. “Anna, I have already I told you, I will not change my mind. I made my decision and that’s all there is to say.”
“A decision made in a state of mental instability based on anger and hurt feelings. Come on, Katie, I know you’re gonna regret this. Please just give it another thought,
a few more days…” Anna begged. She couldn’t believe that her younger sister would really make a decision without consulting her own reason.
“I can’t, Anna!” Katie exclaimed. “I’m too far along to do more thinking. It would be too late, don’t you get it?”
“Don’t you dare talk to me as if I’m retarded! I do understand your situation very well, I have been in the same place once!” she shouted.
“I know and I know how hard it was for you. I don’t want that for myself. Can’t you understand? I’m not as strong as you are.” Katie was on the verge of tears once
again. She was sick and tired of all those tears and just too happy to get rid of them.
“Of course you are!” Anna shot back. “You’re a Stratford! You can do it and I will help you, he will help you. Come on, Katie, you have got one of the most gorgeous
men in the world at your back. Hundreds of women would kill for that!”
“I’m not hundreds of women! And please leave Orlando out of the game. He has done enough damage.”
“I won’t! It’s his child!”
“Please could we refer to it as it…It’s not a child!”
“Yet!” That was not her sister, Anna thought. Her sister could not have a heart of stone.
“I’ve had it! That’s it. I’m off!”
With these words Katie left the room and went upstairs to call a taxi to take her to the clinic.

8.45 am. That meant there were 15 minutes left until her appointment. She breathed in deeply, inhaling the fresh morning air. 15 minutes until…Katie closed her eyes
and sighed. She remembered her dream. Once again she felt Orlando’s’ lips on hers, his hands on her belly. Once again she saw the immense happiness in his eyes
when she told she was gonna keep the baby.
“It was a dream, just a fuckin’ dream!” she told herself. “Just a dream” she whispered with tears in her eyes and started walking towards the clinic.

Anna had just dropped off the kids in school and was now on her way into town. Even if she knew that Katie would regret her decision, but nevertheless, she couldn’t
leave her alone, not in a moment like this. Suddenly her mobile rang. Anna pulled over and answered. She heart quiet sobs on the other end of the line and knew what
had happened. She checked her watch: five past nine.
“I hate you…” she heard her little sister whisper.
“Give me ten minutes. I’ll be right there.” She hung up and drove as fast as possible – and well yeah affordable in case she got caught – to the clinic to pick Katie up
again.
A few minutes later she arrived. Katie was already waiting for her sitting on a bench. She looked miserable, but Anna knew that she had made the right decision. When
she walked towards her, Katie looked up. “I really hate you; this is all your fault!”
“No, it’s not. It was your decision.” Anna hugged Katie silently and held her tight for a while. When she pulled back she looked at Katie’s belly. “I’m gonna be an aunt!”
she shrieked and the women fell into each other’s arms.
A little while later after the women and Anna’s son Brian had had their second breakfast in a nearby café, they were on their way back home, when suddenly Katie
shouted, “Wait. I think I should talk to him. Turn right here, please.”
“Who? Orlando?”
“No, Jamie. I owe him an explanation, besides I still have some stuff at his house. You can drop me off right here. I’ll take the bus home.”
“You sure, you don’t want me to wait?”
“No, this could take a while. I’ll be fine. Take the little guy there home, he needs his snooze.”
“Alright then. I’ll see you later. Bye!”
“Bye!” Katie got out of the car and slowly walked over to the house. She still had the keys. For some reason she carried them around with her all the time. She opened
the door and went upstairs. When she was just about to open the door, she held herself back and rang the bell. Jamie opened a few minutes later. He looked miserable.
Lack of sleep, loneliness and his hurt feelings marked his face. But he let her in. “Hi.”, she whispered. “I wanted to get the rest of my stuff.”
“I figured you’d come for them. I put most of it in boxes already. You can load my car, and we can set a date when we discuss what’s gonna happen with the furniture
and the apartment.” His voice was so cold it sent shivers down Katie’s spine. “Yeah, sure. You can keep the flat and furniture for now, well at least till I move out. I’m
stayin’ with my sister’s for a while.”
“I thought so. Well, just gather your stuff; I’ll be in the kitchen if you need anything.”
He turned around to leave the room. It broke Katie’s heart to see him like that. After all he had been a wonderful partner for so many years, and now she was going to
raise another man’s child.
“Jamie!”
He waited. Katie took a deep breath. “I think I owe you an explanation…”
