Part IX
Day to Day It Goes Through
Tyson now sat in the waiting room of a hospital. He had woken in the ambulance only to find that Piper had been the one shot. He looked over at Nick who was being questioned by the police. He could tell Nick was beginning to get frustrated by all the questions. Tyson, himself, was in no condition to be questioned. The only thought floating through his head was ‘please let Piper and the baby be all right’. Soon the doctor walked out of the emergency room, his head hung low. Tyson jumped out of his seat, fearing the worst as Nick stepped away from the police officer. He glanced at Tyson who was already standing in front of the doctor. Nick began to say a silent pray. Please let Piper and the baby have survived.
“Is she?” Tyson asked, not being able to finish his thought.
“She’ll be fine.” He replied. Tyson felt as if a weight had been lifted and then replaced as the doctor’s words sunk in. His thoughts flew to his unborn son. He had begun to believe that it was a boy since Piper had been so sure from the start.
“And the baby?” The tears were again welling in his eyes. Somehow he already knew his son didn’t make it.
“We did everything we could, but we couldn’t save it.” He replied causing Tyson to fall to his knees in anguish. He could hardly breath as Nick rushed over and helped his friend to his feet, pulling him into a hug. He let Tyson cry on his shoulder, knowing that his heart had just been broken into a thousand pieces. The doctor began to walk off, but Tyson stopped, holding back his sobs long enough to ask the question he needed to know.
“Could you tell whether it was a boy or girl?” The doctor half-smiled, wondering why he would want to know something like that.
“It would have been a boy.” He replied and then walked away, leaving Tyson to weep for the loss of his son. Piper had been right. She would have given birth to a boy. They really would have had a little Tyson Jr. running around. Tyson couldn’t stand the thought and again cried on Nick’s shoulder.
Tyson opened the hospital door slightly, wanting to see Piper, but not wanting to wake her. Upon finding her awake he walked in and took a seat in the chair next to her. He still had tears in his eyes, but knew he had to be strong for her. He noticed that she had just awakened as she blinked a few times, trying to focus on him. He took her hand in his trying to offer her some kind of small comfort.
“How you feel?” He asked wondering if she knew about the baby. She looked him in the eyes, tears already beginning to fog her vision.
“Little Tyson Jr. didn’t…” He took her in his arms as the sob ripped through her. Nick watched from the window of the door, as Tyson held her. He turned to Mike and Chris, who were both standing, heads hung low, thoughts floating through their minds.
“Mike, can you call DreamWorks? Tell them we’re canceling the tour until further notice.” Mike nodded at Nick’s words. He had never seen Tyson this strong before. He could tell Tyson truly loved Piper, for Tyson was being strong for her. This was the strongest Nick had ever seen his friend.
Tyson had now gotten Piper home to his place in Stillwater. He walked into what would have been his son’s room, the blue clouded wallpaper bringing back memories of when he and Piper had spent weeks picking out the perfect paper for the room, and spotted Piper wrapped in a blanket, sitting in the window seat. She was staring out the window and gently singing the lullaby they had written together. Tyson noticed it was snowing outside as well as the tearstains on her cheeks. He began to listen to her voice.
“Dream of dreams my sweet child tonight, close your sweet eyes and dream, Dream sweet dreams my child tonight, dream of castles in the sky, dream of gumdrops at your fingertips and please dream sweet dreams tonight.”
He went and sat beside her, holding her close as her silent tears began to fall once again. He gently kissed her tears away and smiled as she looked up at him, her tears having momentarily stopped. She forced a smile before turning her gaze back to the window. He soon began to hum the song she had just sung. She soon joined him. He often found her this way, most likely lost in thought about the way things should have been. They were both emotionally scared but he was too worried about her to even think of himself. The thought that constantly ran through his mind was ‘this was all my fault’.
A month later Piper began burying herself in her work; anything to ease the pain. Tyson hadn’t written a song since the incident and was beginning to turn to alcohol more often. Piper was hardly ever home and was still unaware that Tyson blamed himself. He now sat at the local bar, a shot of Jack Daniels in his hand. He looked at Lou, the bar tender, and then took a wad of cash from his pocket and tossed it on the table.
“I want the whole bottle.” He stated. Lou smiled as he set the bottle on the bar. Tyson had become his favorite costumer.
“You gonna drink your troubles away tonight, eh?” Lou asked.
“I’m sure as hell gonna try.” With that he downed the shot of Jack Daniels. He did this again a number of times before the alcohol began to affect him. He looked up at Lou. “Do you know what it feels like to kill your own unborn baby?” He asked, slurring the words. Lou was stunned by his question.
“I can’t say I have and I’m sure you haven’t either.” Lou knew about Tyson and Piper’s misfortune. Tyson sneered.
“Lou, my friend,” he paused taking another shot. “Didn’t you know? I killed my unborn son. Piper knows ‘cuz she’s never home. She blames me, do you?” Lou picked up the almost empty bottle of Jack Daniels.
“I think you’ve had enough to drink. You want me to call you a cab?” Tyson stood and pulled out his phone, but quickly replaced it in his pocket.
“No, I want my fucking paid bottle of,” he couldn’t even remember what he had been drinking. “What was I drinking again?” Lou shook his head. He had seen many people drink their lives away but never anyone who had as much going for him as Tyson.
“Tyson, it’s time for you to go home.” He stated. Tyson drunkenly pointed at him.
“I think you’re right.” He somehow managed to walk out of the bar. Lou quickly dialed Nick’s number as he had done so many times before. Nick soon found Tyson sitting against the street lamp on the corner in front of the bar. He walked over to Tyson and slung his arm over his shoulder.
“Nick, when’d you get here? Did you come to get my Daniels from Lou?” Tyson was one hundred percent trashed.
“I came to take you home.” Nick replied. He stopped when Tyson grabbed his shirt a moment later vomit lay on the ground in front of the two young musicians. He began to drag Tyson back to his car. Nick loaded Tyson in the front seat and Tyson passed out.
Tyson woke as Nick pulled into the driveway. He couldn’t remember for the life of him where he was or were he was going. Soon he realized he was in a car. He looked over at Nick, a look of confusion on his face. Nick answered his unasked question.
“I took you home. You got drunk again and Lou called me. Now get your ass in your house.” Nick practically pushed Tyson out of his car. He drove off as Tyson walked into his house. Piper was sitting in the nearest room waiting for him. He sighed when he saw her. She approached him and could smell the liquor on his breath.
“Ty, were you at that bar again?” She asked already knowing the answer.
“Don’t start.” He replied coldly. He was in no mood to argue with her right now. He just wanted to get to his room and pass out again. She took another step towards him.
“Alcohol’s not gonna cure what happened, Ty.” She had more to say, but he cut her off.
“Why not say what you’re really thinking!” He screamed. She was taken back by his sudden outburst. “I killed him! I killed little Tyson Jr.! This is all my fault!” Piper couldn’t believe his words. Tyson collapsed to the floor with sobs racking through his body. “I killed him.” He whispered.
“Ty, no. My God, this isn’t your fault. You can’t blame yourself.” Tears welled in her eyes as she began to try and hold him. She couldn’t believe he blamed himself. The moment her hand touched him he pushed her away with enough force to send her flying at least four feet away from him. Upon realizing what he had done he took off. He couldn’t believe he had caused her more pain. He knew he had to get away from her before he hurt her again. “Ty, wait!” Piper screamed after him as she ran in his direction. He had always run faster then her and she soon lost sight of him. Little did she know, but Tyson was headed towards the airport to try and run away from the pain he faced and the pain he continued to cause Piper. In his eyes he was doing the right thing. He knew being away from her would kill him, but he loved her so intensely that he didn’t care about himself. He just wanted her to move on and heal.
Another month had passed as Nick helped Piper move her belongings into an apartment in San Antonio. Neither of them had heard from Tyson and Piper decided that it was for the best for her to leave and try to start over again. She needed a new start and hoped that Tyson would forgive her for leaving him in the state he was in, but with out being able to track him she didn’t know what else to do. Not to mention the fact that Tyson wouldn’t answer his phone or her messages. Nick walked in setting down the last box.
“That’s the last one.” He replied. Piper gave him a half-hearted smile.
“Thanks, Nick. I really appreciate you helping me out.” He pulled her into a hug. He knew she was still a complete wreck.
“It’s no problem. It was good to get the hell out of Stillwater for a bit.” Piper began to look around at her new home. She was getting a new start. A new beginning, but with out Tyson. She wanted him in her life more then anything else in the world. She wiped away a tear from her eye. Nick could tell she was still upset. “Piper, it’s ok to cry. Let it all out.” He stated again taking her into a hug. She began to cry. She couldn’t hold back the tears. She had lost the only two things that had really ever meant anything to her other then her music. First her unborn son and then the man she loved. Tyson was gone forever and she couldn’t handle the pain inside. The pain was slowly eating her alive. The pain was consuming her as Nick told her it was all right to be hurting like she was. She just wanted Tyson back in her life. She wished it were he holding her right now. She wished his arm were so carefully wrapped around her and she wished it were he telling her things were going to be all right. She just wanted things to go back the way they were. Back to a time when her and the man she loved could simply lay in each other’s arms enjoying one another’s company. Unfortunately those days were never going to happen again, or at least in her mind.
