"Come on Mikey, hurry up!" Gerard yelled up the stairs, trying to rush his brother out the door. He turned to Frankie, who had just stumbled out of bed and was pouring a cup of coffee as he rubbed his bare abdomen. "Are you sure we have the guestroom ready?"
Frankie blinked at Gerard, then opened his mouth wide, yawning as he turned back to his coffee.
"Umm... hello?" Gerard put a hand on his hip and glared at Frankie.
Frankie smirked as he took a sip. "Dude, breathe. Everything’s ready."
"I know," Mikey huffed from under the t-shirt he was pulling over his head as he made his way down the stairs. "Just because some people feel the need to get up at the ass crack of dawn and spend two hours doing their hair..." he trailed off, adjusting the hem of his shirt.
Gerard had to giggle when Mikey’s head came into view. His hair was sticking out in every direction but down, and his glasses were resting sideways on his face. He rummaged through the cabinets, appearing not to notice or care.
"Maybe you should have," Gerard said, still laughing at the sight of his brother. Mikey stuck his tongue out, but made no attempt to smooth his hair.
"Yeah, why are you so antsy anyway?" Ray asked from behind the refrigerator door. He grabbed the carton of orange juice, taking a long drink as he closed the refrigerator. He turned to Gerard, grinning.
"We have glasses, you know," Gerard said, rolling his eyes. "And I’m not antsy." He turned to Mikey. "Ready?"
"Geez, can’t you let a guy eat breakfast?" he asked as his pop tarts popped out of the toaster.
"You can eat that in the car, we’re already late." He grabbed his brother by the arm and pulled him toward the door.
Mikey glanced at Frankie and Ray and grinned.
After a half an hour delay on the turnpike, they finally made it to the airport. As Gerard put the car in park he flipped his visor down, giving his hair one last check in the mirror. Thank Jesus the dark circles are gone, he thought as he studied his reflection. He reached for the eyeliner he kept in the glove compartment, but Mikey slapped his hand away.
"Dude, weren’t you the one who was complaining about how late we were like 30 seconds ago. You look beautiful, lets go." Mikey grinned as he opened his door. "Besides, Bert’s seen you without makeup plenty of times," he added, ducking in preparation for the smack in the back of the head he was sure Gerard would deliver.
Gerard just rolled his eyes and got out of the car, hoping to hide his slight blush. Am I being that obvious? He couldn’t remember the last time he felt so nervous. His heart was racing, pounding in his ears as they made their way through the airport crowd. His hands were sweaty and shaking uncontrollably. He took a deep breath and tried to force his heart rate down as they looked for the gate where they were supposed to meet.
It wasn’t hard to find. Gerard could hear Bert laughing maniacally from twenty feet across the terminal. He stopped short when the crowd parted slightly and his eyes fell on the source of that familiar giggle for the first time in months. Bert had changed so much. His chest and arms had filled out a bit more since the end of the tour, and the wild hair that had once fallen just below his chin now fell past his shoulders. His face had filled out a little too, and was covered in the barest hint of a beard. He looked amazing, actually.
Gerard remembered to keep walking when Mikey nudged him with his elbow before he cupped his hands around his mouth.
"Hey sexy, can I have an autograph?" he called over the noise of the crowd. The trio looked up in unison at the word 'autograph’, erupting in laughter when they saw who had said it.
Bert’s eyes met Gerard’s and he grinned widely, waving. Gerard’s breath caught in his chest. His eyes hadn’t changed at all.
"Hi-" Gerard smiled and started to greet his friends, but he was interrupted by a loud squeak coming from his brother. He turned to see that Jeph had picked Mikey up when he hugged him, and was now spinning him around, imitating a scene from one of those typical 60’s romantic movies. Gerard grinned, laughing at the looks of distaste some of the passing people were shooting them. He felt Quinn throw an arm around his shoulder, pulling him into a hug.
"You look good," Quinn said, clapping Gerard on the back.
"Thanks." Gerard grinned. He knew what he really meant. "But, I believe you were going for 'thank god, you don’t look like a drug addict’." They both laughed as Gerard turned to Bert, who just stood there, gazing at him, his eyes glowing with warmth. He nodded in agreement and pulled his ex into a hug, resting his head on his shoulder. Gerard held onto Bert tightly, not wanting the embrace to end. It had been entirely too long.
"I missed you, kid," he whispered into Bert’s hair. Bert didn’t respond, but Gerard felt him smile. When they finally broke apart, Bert’s eyes were glistening with tears, though he was still smiling.
"Okay guys," Quinn said after all the greetings and hugs had been passed around. "As much as I enjoy standing in crowded airports, I’m ready to see this palace you boys are renting."
"Palace my ass," Mikey snorted as he grabbed one of the bags. "But I agree. Let’s go the hell home."
Once they made it to the house and everyone’s bags were brought inside, Jeph headed straight to the refrigerator and grabbed a beer.
"What, I don’t even get a hello before you raid our fridge?" Frankie asked, putting his hands on his hips in mock indignation.
Jeph grinned around the bottle. "Hey, we had to change planes in Cleveland," he said after swallowing half the bottle in one gulp. "I’ve earned this."
"Anybody else want anything?" Gerard called over his shoulder into the living room where everyone had congregated. He was answered by a chorus of replies like 'fucking right’ and 'better make it a double’. He grinned and grabbed the entire 12 pack of Corona before heading back to the living room to find Bert jumping up and down with a cd in his hand.
"Where’s the fucking stereo?" he whined as he opened all the doors on the entertainment unit.
"Bottom set of doors, the middle ones," Gerard said, putting the beer on the coffee table and dropped into the recliner he’d deemed his when they moved in. No one even bothered to sit in it when he was here anymore, he’d always wind up chasing them out of it. "What are we listening to anyway?"
"Oh, just the sophomore album from some piece of shit band from Utah," Quinn replied, winking.
"Yay!" Ray said, clapping his hands together like a five year old.
"Woohoo, party!" Mikey added, giggling as Jeph dropped into his lap.
"Awesome." Gerard tried to sound excited, but his heart had jumped into his throat once again. He wondered if they’d included the songs Bert had written about him. The opening track answered his question.
"Woohoo, our shout out!" Mikey squeaked. "This is a great song."
"Yeah, its gonna be the first single. We’ve already filmed the video," Bert said, sprawling across the floor when he saw all the seats were taken.
"Dude, you can sit here," Gerard said, standing up.
"No, I’m fin-" he stopped as his cell phone rang. "Shit, I forgot." He stood up and pulled his phone from his pocket as he stepped out of the room. Gerard leaned back in his chair, pretending he was just getting comfortable as he tried to hear Bert’s end of the conversation. It didn’t work. He could hear Bert’s voice, but all he made out was and 'I’m sorry’ and a giggle.
"Uh oh, someone forgot to call their warden when we landed," Jeph said when Bert was out of earshot. Quinn snorted as he took another swig of beer.
"Oooh, is said warden male or female?" Mikey asked, grabbing the last Corona.
"Dude, Gerard hasn’t even had one yet," Jeph said, slapping Mikey’s hand away. Mikey looked at Gerard, his eyes holding a mixture of stern parent and sympathetic brother.
"No, I’m fine," Gerard said.
Quinn looked at Gerard knowingly before answering Mikey’s question. "Female," he said, rolling his eyes.
"Huh?" Mikey and Ray said in unison.
"Said warden is female."
Gerard felt like someone had hit him in the face with a shovel, then proceeded to stab him in the chest. So, Bert had found someone else.
"And you’re never going to believe who it is," Jeph added, keeping his voice low. Quinn threw a pillow at him, trying to shut him up, but he continued anyway. "Bert’s dating the Princess of Darkness herself-" he cut himself off as Bert came back into the room. He looked around, confused as to why everyone had fallen silent and sat staring at him with their mouths hanging open.
"What?" he asked, blinking.
"Kelly fucking Osbourne?" Mikey giggled.
"There’s no fucking way," Ray added, grinning at Bert.
"Dude, you fucking told them?" Bert glared at Jeph. He glanced at Gerard, who had his face hidden behind a comic book.
"Chill. Its not a big deal," Mikey said, still giggling.
"Yeah, its just she’s the last person we’d expect you to hook up with," Frankie added, glancing at Gerard, who was still hiding his face behind a comic book.
"Yeah, how’d you meet anyway?" Ray asked.
"At one of our shows. We started talking and hit it off. She’s a really nice girl."
"Aww, how sweet. Bert’s in love," Mikey teased.
"Umm... well, its not really like that," Bert said, glancing at Gerard again.
Frankie watched Gerard’s fist crumple the cover of the comic book. "So, what do you guys want to do for dinner?" he asked in an attempt to change the subject.
"Man, I’m too tired to go out," Quinn said. "Let’s just order pizza or something."
"Good idea," Frankie said, grabbing the phone.
"I’ll get it," Gerard said too cheerfully as he stood up.
"Umm, we have like five hundred delivery places," Mikey said, wincing as Frankie smacked him in the back of the head. "Ow," he whispered, glaring at Frankie.
"I said I’ll get it," Gerard repeated stonily as he grabbed his keys and rushed out the door.
There was an uncomfortable silence as everyone tried to think of something to say that might lighten the mood. Bert sighed and dropped into Gerard’s now unoccupied chair.
"See? That’s why I didn’t want to say anything," he said, closing his eyes as he ran a hand roughly over his hair.
"I’m sorry," Jeph said. "I didn’t even think about that."
"Okay... how about a game of cards or something?" Mikey suggested, hoping to change the subject.
"And another case of beer," Frankie added, earning a chuckle from Bert and Quinn.
*********** Gerard squealed tires as he pulled out of the driveway. He flipped through his cd’s, grabbing his Smashing Pumpkins mix. He cranked up Bullet with Butterfly Wings, hoping the song would have its usual calming effect. Tears streamed down his face as he screamed the lyrics at the top of his lungs.
What did you fucking expect? he thought as the song ended. He resisted the urge to drive his car into the nearest tree and pulled into the parking lot of the first pizza place he came to. He put the car in park and rested his head on the steering wheel, trying to pull himself together long enough to place an order. The sound of his cell phone snapped him back to reality.
"Yes, Frankie, I’ll get more beer," he answered.
"Well, thanks for that but that’s not why I called," he replied.
"I know. Plain cheese for Mikey and Jeph, veggie for you and Qui-"
"Dude, shut up!" Frankie cut him off, laughing at Gerard’s melodramatic tone. "I called to see if you were okay."
"No, actually, I’m not," Gerard replied flatly.
"Do you need to talk?"
"What is there to say? I’m an idiot, I’ve lost the love of my life forever. There’s nothing you can do about it, there’s nothing I can do about it, so just drop it."
"Okay, but I’m here if you need me."
Gerard sighed as some of his anger drained away. "I know. I knew this was going to be hard, and I thought I’d prepared myself, but that just came as a shock. I mean, come on. Kelly Osbourne?"
Gerard could feel Frankie smirk. "Well, he did say he wasn’t in love, so you don’t have to worry about wedding bells and happily ever after and all that shit."
Gerard managed a small giggle. "Okay, we need a truck load of carcass-free pizza, another truckload of beer... anything else?"
"Just yourself in a good mood, ready to have fun with some friends you haven’t seen in almost a year."
"Okay, I’ll do my best," Gerard said, flipping his phone shut. He let out another sigh as he went into the restaurant. He was no longer ready to hit something out of anger, shock, and jealousy... but nothing could take away the cold lump of sadness and loss that had settled in the pit of his stomach.
