‘So where did he say he would be then? Said Gerry as he and Kim waded through the crowd in the Royal George public house later on that night.
‘He said he’d be by the pool table in the corner’ said Kim as she reached back and grabbed Gerry’s hand so as not to lose him in the crush. As she reached the edge of the large group of people flocking at the bar and eventually got out into an open space she saw the tall, dark haired boy that was Gus.
‘Hey you how ya’ doin’? Chimed Gus happily as he hugged his sister.
‘Great thanks amigos, Jesus it’s packet in here isn’t it? Said Kim as she unzipped her tight little baby pink hoodie and took it off to tie around her waist, ‘Anyway, Gerry, this is my not so little brother Gus, and Gus this is Gerry’ said Kim as she introduced man to boy.
‘Alright Gerry, good to meet you man’ said Gus as he shook Gerry’s hand.
‘Feeling’s mutual mate’ said Gerry with a smile. ‘Right I’m going to join the mob at the bar and get some drinks, Gus what are you drinking?’ asked Gerry.
‘I’m all set thanks mate, I took the liberty of getting a couple in because of the state of the queue, cheers for the offer though’ said Gus as he held up a bottle of lager in each hand.
‘And what will you be having’ said Gerry as he turned his attention to Kim.
‘Ill have a pint of Fosters please’ said Kim as she smiled up at him.
‘Ill be back as soon as I can, if I’m gone for longer than half an hour I trust one of you two will come and find me! I could easily get trampled in that lot’ said Gerry as he jerked his head in the direction of the bar queue. He gave Kim a swift kiss and departed.
‘Erm, pardon me for intruding into your personal life sis, but I thought you two where just friends? Or am I behind on current events? Gus asked Kim as soon as Gerry had departed.
‘It’s early days yet, but yeah I guess we are kind of together’ said Kim with a smile.
‘Nice one doll’ said Gus with a smile as he reached forward and kissed Kim on the cheek. ‘The way you spoke of him in the past always made me wonder if there was something else there’ he continued before taking a long swig of his drink. ‘Of course he has to have my seal of approval, and I will be putting him to the Gus test’.
‘Oh the famous Gus boyfriend test, I think he can survive that. You won’t be able to scare him off like you do to Charlie’s potential boyfriends’ said Kim confidently.
‘And what makes you think he’s not going to crack over my careful and calculated scrutiny then?’ asked Gus.
‘Because he’s just as sharp and clever as you are dear Gussy-boy! Laughed Kim as she gave her little brother a playful punch in the shoulder.
‘So am I going to play the winner then? Asked Gerry when he eventually retuned from the bar with the drinks to find Kim and Gus having a game of pool.
‘You can try, but you don’t stand much chance chief, the pool shark skill runs in our family blood, our mum is virtually unbeatable’ said Kim before potting her chosen ball with ease, and sticking her tongue out at Gus defiantly.
‘And I’m partial to playing a few frames for big money when I’m with my buddies in New York, I reckon we are pretty fairly matched’ said Gerry as he took off his jacket and sat down to watch the game unfold. In the end it was Gus who won, and made a show out of his win by dancing around in a comical manner, glad he wasn’t once again beaten by his sister like he usually was. He took comfort in the fact that while she was fantastic around the pool table, she was useless at plenty of other things; cooking, painting, singing, dancing. He could go on, but he was too interested in watching how Kim behaved around Gerry. He could almost feel how happy she was, it positively radiated out of her. He smiled to himself and put the money into the side slot of the pool table and waited for the balls to be released, ready for his game against Gerry.
Kim sat back with her drink and lit a cigarette before turning her full attention towards the game. She smiled contently to herself as she watched Gus and Gerry hit it off like a house on fire. She had always thought they where both quite similar in personality, both where warm and very funny, and both where highly protective over her too. Kim remembered when she had been cruelly dumped by a boyfriend many years ago and he had come to collect some of his stuff back at the family home where she had still lived, and been greeted at the door by a head butt from Gus. Kim had never seen so much blood in her life and although Kim’s mother and Papa Jeff had hit the roof and given Gus the biggest telling off of his life, Kim had gone into his roof afterwards and thanked him for watching her back, and making her evil ex’s nose explode all over his face.
Kim looked over at the drinks on the table next to her and realized they where all nearly half empty.
‘Oi you two, I’m going to the bar, same again?’ Kim shouted to disturb the rapidly closing minutes of the pool match.
‘Yeah please’ Gerry and Gus both shouted back, tearing their eyes away from the table for only a few seconds.
‘Ok then, ill leave you two to it’ said Kim as she rolled her eyes and smiled before turning in the direction of the bar.
‘So I hear you and Kim are seeing each other’ said Gus casually after he aimed a shot at the corner pocket and missed.
‘Yes we are, it’s early days yet though’ said Gerry as he paused his shot to look up at Gus.
‘Yeah she said that too. Look I don’t mean to play the heavy but you do realize ill have to kill you if you hurt her? Said Gus lightly, but only half joking.
‘Don’t you worry Gus, I can assure you my intentions towards your sister are nothing less than good’ said Gerry with a smile as he accurately potted his ball.
‘I know, I’m a fast judge of character and a pretty good one at that too, but it’s just something a brothers got to say’ laughed Gus as he chalked the end of his cue.
‘I hear you there, I used to threaten eye gouging as punishment for breaking my little sisters heart, it seemed to do the trick’ said Gerry, to which he and Gus both laughed. After Gus had triumphantly won, and Gerry had brought him celebratory double vodka, the trio went across to the Apollo to enter the gig.
Gus had been as clever thinking as ever and called up the venue beforehand and managed to swindle his name onto the guest list. Kim was glad that he had done, because they would have had to wait in the mother of huge queue’s if he hadn’t of, and Kim would never use her celebrity status to cut the line, she was just a little bit too down to earth for that!
‘Gus Appleton and guests’ he said to the near 7ft tall doorman with the guest list attached to a clipboard.
‘In you go mate’ he replied as he made a tick on his list.
Once the three where inside, they headed to the bar to get some drinks, then sat and chatted while they waited for the support band to come on.
‘I’m just going to find the toilet’ said Gerry as he got up.
‘Go down the corridor and it’s just by the stairs at the front’ said Gus helpfully as Gerry turned to leave.
‘Cheers Gus’ Gerry called back over his shoulder.
As Kim sat and talked with her brother, she couldn’t help but notice his attention kept being lured away from her to a young redhead standing not so far from their seats with a group of her friends. Kim watched as Gus smiled and winked at her, and the redhead to respond in the same playful flirty way.
‘Go on’ said Kim, raising her eyebrows and glancing over at the pretty girl Gus was captivated by, ‘Go chat her up, work some of that Appleton magic on her lad’ said Kim as she patted Gus’ arm. Gus sat and pondered for a few moments.
‘Ill be back in a bit’ he said before he made a hasty retreat and ventured over to the girl with the eye catching mane of auburn locks. Kim watched as Gus approached her, and then lead her away gently by her elbow towards the bar. Ever the gentleman, Kim guessed Gus had offered to buy the young girl a drink. ‘Ladies man’ thought Kim to herself as she shook her head and smiled before taking a big gulp of her pint.
‘You took your bloody time!’ said Kim as Gerry sat back down in front of her.
‘There was yet another queue’ said Gerry before taking a sip of his tonic water. ‘Where’s your brother disappeared to?’ he asked as he set his glass back down on the table.
‘Casanova is currently chatting up a young lady, he’s over at the bar’ said Kim, taking a sip of her drink and nodding to where Gus was stood in conversation with said young lady.
‘He doesn’t waste his time does he?’ said Gerry as he turned and looked in the direction Kim had nodded her head.
‘Nah, he’s not like us’ laughed Kim as she reached out and squeezed Gerry’s hand.
Gus returned to the table with the girl he had been chatting to and introduced her as Louise. She was a very quiet girl but on first impressions Kim found her to be very sweet, and very shy to be sat with ‘two big movie stars’ as she had nervously giggled. They remained in the bar area until the support band came on, then they went out front to watch, with Louise departing to get back to her friends, promising Gus she would come and talk to him later on.
The support band where very good, but didn’t even compare to the amazing energetic performance of Massive Attack. Even though she was the first to admit she had two left feet as far as dancing went, Kim danced around all night to song after song, especially when an old favourite of hers and her brothers, ‘Hymn Of The Big Wheel’ was played, to which they danced around each other, arms linked, singing along at the tops of their voices (both very badly out of tune), and making Gerry crumble into hysterics.
Towards the end of the gig they slowed things down and played more mellow songs such as ‘Karmacoma’ and ‘Teardrop’. Kim was stood in front of Gerry at the back of the big crowd, with her arms reached up behind her and hooked around Gerry’s neck as he rested his head on her shoulder. She looked over to the other side of the venue to just about see Gus having a cheeky kiss with Louise. ‘How sweet’ thought Kim to herself as she smiled and listened to the final notes of ‘Teardrop’ drift through the huge amplifiers.
‘We don’t usually do dedications, but a guy came backstage earlier and asked me if I would dedicate this song to a lovely lady called Kim. So Kim, wherever you are out there, this one’s for you’ announced the female singer, before the rest of the band launched into play. Kim felt her heart skip a beat as she heard the song start, realizing it was a favourite of hers, the song simply titled ‘Angel’. She turned around and looked at Gerry, knowing straight away it was him behind the dedication. She had never had someone do something like that for her before, and suddenly realized why he had taken his time going to the ‘toilet’.
‘You’re amazing, thank you’ said Kim, reaching up and planting a kiss on Gerry’s cheek.
‘You are my Angel, come from way above’ Gerry sang along into her ear as he held her tightly to him. For the rest of the song they kissed and swayed to the beat in each others arms. Kim shed a few tears as she held him; she was just so touched at what he had done for her. As was Gus, who looked over and gave Gerry a very approving nod and smile.
Massive Attack came back out after heavy demand for an encore, and played the all time favourite ‘Unfinished Symphony’ to which the crowd went crazy. After the gig Gus quickly got Louise’s phone number and arranged to take her out for a drink the following evening and made his way back over to Gerry and Kim before they exited the venue, buying a bit of merchandise each before they left.
The couple made sure they got Gus into a taxi first, with Gerry insisting he pay the fare since Gus had refused any money for the tickets, and then waited for another to pull along into the taxi rank.
‘Your brother is a laugh, nice young guy’ said Gerry with mirth as he and Kim got into the taxi that had just pulled up alongside them.
‘He likes you too, I’m glad my two favourite fella’s get on’ replied Kim as she sat down and gave the taxi driver her address. When they had returned to Kim’s flat they sat up and chatted for a while, drinking tea and cuddling on the sofa, before deciding to stay up a little longer to watch an old black and white spaghetti western that was about to start. The film had only been on for 35 minutes before both decided that sleeping was going to be more interesting, and off to bed they went.
‘Oooh Jesus I almost forgot to tell you that Andy and Colleen are having a party this weekend at their house for Colleens 32nd birthday. We are both invited, and she’s stated that fancy dress is mandatory’ said Gerry as he rolled over off his back to face Kim.
‘That sounds fantastic, but aren’t we going to be up at Barkham this weekend? Asked Kim as she idly played with a lock of Gerry’s dark wavy hair.
‘Yes we are, but ill drive us down for the party in the evening, and then we can travel back there in the early hours of the morning, grab a bit of sleep and then be all present and correct in the morning ready for you to kick my ass again’ laughed Gerry as he referred to the last bit of fight training they where to have on Sunday morning.
‘That sounds like a good idea actually, or we can come back here and sleep for a few hours and travel down at dawn’ said Kim.
‘Well either suggestion is good for me; we will work it all out on the day though. But one thing we do have to work out is who the hell we are going to dress up as’ said Gerry, beginning to ponder his own question. They both sat in silence for a few moments, before calling out suggestions on costumes. There was a lot of ‘I’m not dressing like that’ and ‘It will be a cold day in hell before I wear one of those’ from both parties before Kim came up with a good idea.
‘I’ve got it! She announced proudly, ‘We can go as Sid and Nancy’ said Kim as she giggled.
‘Well ill be the most muscular Sid Vicious the world has ever seen!’ said Gerry, laughing and flexing a bicep.
‘And ill be the curviest looking Nancy Spungen, but it doesn’t matter, it will be fun’ said Kim, still laughing.
‘Ok then, Sid and Nancy it is’ said Gerry, deciding it would be easier to agree, plus the fact that it was the best idea either of them had had so far. ‘As long as I get to keep the handcuffs afterwards’ said Gerry cheekily in reference to the famous picture of the troubled punk couple, wrists locked together using cuffs.
‘Gerry! You are naughty!’ Kim said for the second time that day as she picked up her pillow and smacked him over the head with it. ‘Men!’ She thought to herself as she stopped her pillow attack and flopped back down, got herself comfy in Gerry’s arms, and let the sandman take her off into the land of sleep.
