CHAPTER SIXTEEN
Karen dug her toes into the sand, wrapped her arms around her legs that were bent in front of her and tilted her head up to the toasty sun. She squinted her eyes closed and smelled the salt water air. It was so good to finally be away. A real vacation for once. The whole time she and Sam were married they never went on a vacation or a honeymoon for that matter. She was pregnant with Ryan when they got married and renting a large apartment and buying baby necessities was first and foremost on their ‘to do’ list. Honeymoon was no where near the top and after the first baby then came the second followed by the third. She heard the audible click of the camera and opened her eyes to see Josh, clad in navy gauze pants and a silk, button down shirt posing on the beach, his hair blowing softly in the tropical breeze. Noticing that she was watching he smiled at her and winked. She felt tingles that began in her toes and moved their way up her legs where it spread into her belly and her groin. They had arrived in Puerto Vallarta only two days before the photo shoot began but they had two full days to play on the sand, in the sun, and in the water before he was committed to a schedule. But in the two days they were there they had already made love on the beach and drank Margaritas until the sun rose. Karen watched Josh as he slipped on a pair of sunglasses and turned his head into the sun. She could see the reflection of the light that bounced off the mirrored lenses. The wind flapped around his legs wrapping the gauze pants around them. The shirt he wore was buttoned only half way and now, flattened against him, she could see the hair on his chest. That combined with the outline of his legs where the wind pushed the pants against them, Karen felt herself flushing with desire. He walked slowly down the beach as the photographer snapped photos. She lay back on the beach blanket and began to cover herself with lotion, sensually rubbing it on her legs and her belly. Josh noticed and stared. He wished at that moment he was touching her body as sensually as she was. The photographer was loving it. He encouraged Josh to watch her and encouraged Karen to tease him more. It was making for good photography. When he’d reached the end of the roll, the photographer let them have a break. Josh lay down next to Karen on the blanket and pulled her head to his where he kissed her erotically on the mouth, his tongue lingering a little bit longer. She rolled onto her side and cozied up to him. The gauze pants were next to nothing between them, she could feel his erection pressing into her hip.
“Oh baby,” Josh gasped as he pressed himself deeper into her. “Do you know how badly I want to fuck you right here?” He nibbled at her neck and fiddled with the ties on the top of her suit, tempted to pull the strings and set her hounds free. He restrained himself and slid his hands down her back to her hips and slid a fingertip inside the top of the bottom of her suit. Karen slid her hands inside his silk shirt and rubbed a finger over his erect nipple then moved downward.
“Let’s go back to the room.” She panted. She wanted him almost more then he wanted her. He got up quickly and pulled her up. They ran back up the beach to the villa they occupied which wasn’t far from the ocean. The moment they were inside Josh had her on the floor, the suit was off, his pants were off, he moved swiftly inside her and moaned before he began to make love hastily. When they were finished, Josh lay on his back and panted until his breathing returned to normal. Karen did the same.
“What is it about this place that makes me want to fuck you constantly?” Josh asked. Karen laughed.
“I’d say it was those gauze pants. Damn they are mighty fine hugging your body.” Josh snickered and rolled over onto his side.
“What pants? I don’t have any pants on.” He rubbed himself against her and found he was thickening again. Karen rolled onto her side and sighed.
“Oh no, not again …”
“Oh yes …” Josh said and raised his eyebrows at her. She hiked her leg up over his and he entered her once more.
They moved on from Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara. Karen watched with interest as the photographer set up the photo shoots so that they appeared to be extemporaneous, not contrived. They sat in a small cantina, sipping margaritas when a Mariachi band happened by. The camera clicked. They walked down the cobblestone streets, the sun setting in the distance turning the doorways black and the sky a blazing orange, the camera clicked. Josh’s silhouette against the orange sky, the camera clicked. When they’d had enough of the city they moved back towards the Caribbean. Karen stood on the beach, the sand warmed the bottom of her foot even through her sandals. She crossed her arms over her chest and sighed heavily. She’d never in her life seen a sight quite like this. The ocean was a combination of blues that if she had to describe them to someone who hadn’t seen it, she wasn’t sure if she could. The smell of the ocean combined with the sweet of the flora and musk of the fauna assaulted her nose. She closed her eyes and breathed it in. The waves of the Caribbean lapped up on the shore and filled her ears with a roar that she’d never before encountered, not even on the beach in L.A. It was so loud she didn’t hear Josh approach from behind and didn’t know he was there until he set his hands on her shoulders. She jumped slightly and turned her head. He kissed her forehead.
“Amazing, isn’t it?” He asked and pulled her backwards until she was settled against his chest and then he wrapped his arms around her. She sighed. There were no words she could find to describe how she felt at that very moment. She just wanted to stand there and take it all in, the sight, the sound, the smell, the touch of Josh. They stood there for some time in silence until she could take it no more and was overwhelmed with emotion and wept. Josh turned her towards him and tilted her face upwards with a finger under her chin. “What is it sweetie?” He asked. She couldn’t speak, she could only shake her head. “Is something wrong? Are the kids okay?” She nodded and wiped at her face with the back of her hand. He kissed her pink, sun warmed cheeks. “Then what is it?” She swallowed hard and finally spoke.
“It’s … there’s nothing wrong, this is just the most perfect thing in the world right now.” He smiled and touched her lips gently with his.
“Yes it is.” He pulled her into his arms and cradled her. “I can’t even tell you how happy I am that you are here with me.” She grabbed hold of his shirt and held him tightly.
“So am I, Josh, so am I.”
Two nights before the end of the trip, Karen and Josh sat alone at a table in the back of a Cozumel cantina sipping Sangria. Karen wore a wild fuchsia flower in her hair tucked behind her ear. She lifted her glass of wine and brought it to her cherry lips and sipped then set the glass back down on the table. As Josh watched her he felt a stirring inside. It surprised him because it wasn’t the familiar sexual feeling he usually got when he stared at her, it was something warm, something comforting. He reached out and grabbed her hand. It was soft, warm, and tanned. The warm Mexican sun and the salty water had transformed her into something magnificent, more exquisite and alluring then she already was and it was at that very moment he knew he wanted her. He not only wanted her in his bed but he wanted her in his life. He wanted to share all these moments with her, the good ones and the bad, the happy ones and the sad. He wanted to take care of her when she was sick and to be there for her when she grew old. He looked into her eyes and thought that maybe for a moment she could tell what he thought. He tried to project this into her mind and coincidentally she blushed and looked down, a coy smile played on her lips.
“What are you thinking?” He asked softly. She peered back up at him, the green of her eyes accentuated by the rose of her cheeks. She shrugged.
“I’m thinking how perfect these last few weeks have been and how sad I’m going to be as we prepare to go back to the real world tomorrow.” He nodded knowingly.
“I know. I wish to heaven there was a way we could stay a while longer.” She sighed, the reality of Ohio flooding back and causing a ache in her heart.
“I miss the kids.” She said. Guilty, he looked away. He hadn’t had one single thought of them for over a week and until she mentioned them he didn’t even remember they existed. He cleared his throat before speaking.
“So do I.” He lied. She looked into his eyes.
“I wish we could come back here someday and bring them. They would love it.” He nodded and took a gulp of his wine. What he wished is that she hadn’t brought them up right at that moment. It was spoiling his feeling and causing him to forget the speech he was preparing in his head.
“Karen,” He began and then took both of her hands in his. “I have to tell you something.” She looked at him nervously, worried about what he was going to say. He noticed and spoke quickly.
“It’s nothing bad.” He said and saw her relax. “In fact, I just wanted to say that this time we’ve had together has been the best of my whole life.” She smiled. “No, I mean it. I’ve never, ever been with anyone like you and if I had my choice I’d never be with anyone else again.” He felt her stiffen a bit but when on anyway. “I have a surprise waiting for you back in LA.” She grinned like a child.
“You do?” She gasped. He smiled back at her.
“Yes.”
“What is it?” She asked, giddy.
“I …” He looked down nervously then licked his lips and glanced back at her. “I bought a house and …” Her eyes widened. “And I want to know if you will come and live with me in it.” She gasped.
“Oh my God, Josh … The kids?”
“Oh, the kids too!” He said quickly. “Musn’t forget the kids!” She smiled again and thought of it. She began to tremble, he felt it in her hands and held them tightly.
“Oh my God.” She said again.
“Is that a yes?” He asked nervously. She pulled her hands from his and covered her mouth.
“I, oh my God!” She giggled. “I would love to!” She said finally and rushed into his arms.
CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
The plane was buffeted with turbulence most of the way. Karen sat silent, her stomach throbbing, her heart pounding. Her stomach was throbbing from the ride and her heart was pounding over the excitement of moving in with Josh. She couldn’t wait to tell the kids, she couldn’t wait to put the house up for sale, she couldn’t wait to quit her job. She slid her hand inside Josh’s and his fingers curled around hers. He was holding a novel in one hand, reading, eyes glued to the page. She would have looked at a magazine but she was too energized with thoughts of what she had to do in the next month or two. She tried to envision the house he’d bought. He told her it wasn’t real fancy like most Hollywood homes and she was thankful for that but he did say it had 5 bedrooms with a bathroom attached to each. She felt her belly do flops and couldn’t tell if it was the bumps in the sky or the exultation of having a house that wasn’t a cracker box. She squeezed his hand. He looked at her over his glasses and smiled then went back to his book. She lay back against the seat and closed her eyes, in her mind she was decorating the house, having dinner parties, wearing a sequined dress on New Year’s Eve while celebrities ambling back and forth from the kitchen to the entertaining area. She sighed and felt Josh squeeze her hand once more. The landing was worse then the ride, the wheels skidding to a halt on the wet and snowy runway. Thankfully the limo was waiting for them and after retrieving their luggage, climbed wearily into the car and rested the whole drive to Karen’s house.
Once there they dumped their suitcases on the bed and then as Josh flopped down on the couch, Karen went to get them a drink.
“You want a beer?” She called out to Josh from the kitchen.
“No. Water please.” He hollered back. She brought in a beer in one hand and a bottle of water in the other. He pulled her down onto his lap and, after taking the water, sucked down a giant swig. She set the beer down on the side table and wrapped her arms around his neck. “I can’t drink now that I’m going out on this promotional tour.” Karen nodded and dipped her head to his mouth where she kissed him slowly, her lips lingering over his. Josh had just pulled Karen’s mouth down firmly on his and was sliding his tongue over her lower lip when the door burst open and Carlie came running in followed by Ryan, Kelly, and Sam. Karen leaped off of Josh’s lap and brushed her hair back with her hand as Carlie rushed into her arms and hugged her mother. Josh stood and eyed Sam with interest. So this is the ex-husband he thought and was sorely disappointed. Sam stood slightly taller then Josh but was somewhat burly and wide around the middle. Not wide as in fat but his belly was slightly wider then his chest. His hair was an unkempt mop of blondish-brown layers. Looked like he cut it himself. Sam approached Josh and stuck his hand out.
“So you’re the famous Josh I hear so much about.” Josh shook his hand politely.
“I’m sorry you have to hear it.” Josh said. He wasn’t sorry. Sam looked him up and down then planted his hands on his hips.
“How was Mexico?” Sam asked. Josh smiled, the white of his teeth accentuating the deep tan of his face.
“It was great. Very warm, very sunny.” Josh indicated the windows. “Unlike here.” Sam looked out the window and then back at Josh.
“How was my wife?” Josh frowned. He wasn’t looking to get into some argument with Sam but it was obvious Sam was feeling a little frisky.
“I wouldn’t know, she was probably with you.” Sam nodded.
“Oh that’s right, Karen and I aren’t married anymore, forgive my ignorance.” He said sarcastically.
“Knock it off, Sam.” Karen said.
“Now if you were referring to Karen …” Josh said, his eyes focused on Sam. “She was fabulous.” Sam stared back at Josh, anger flickering in his expression.
“I’m sure she was. She’s a pistol between the sheets.” Josh could feel his blood pressure rise. Karen moved between them and pushed Sam towards the door.
“That’s enough.” She said and dragged him out onto the front porch. “What the hell was that all about?” Sam turned away from her and ran a hand through his already mussed hair.
“What the hell are you doing playing with a kid like that?” He spat. “You should know better!”
“You are so jealous and it’s quite obvious, you know that?” He glared at her, his jaw clenched. “How does it feel, Sam? Huh? That’s what you did to me but we were married! You left me and your kids for some young bimbo.” He looked down and then turned away from her.
“All they did the whole time was talk about him.” He said softly. “They were with me but talked constantly about him!” Karen sighed. “Do you know how that made me feel?” She had the urge to put her hand on his back for comfort but resisted. He never gave her comfort when she was hurting. He left her to pick up the pieces of her own shattered life and put them back together all alone while he frolicked with his secretary, Brenda.
“Yeah, Sam, I know how that feels. What you did to me was way worse then this. We have been divorced for a year and I didn’t start dating until 6 months ago. Don’t think I’m going to feel sorry for you now. This crap has been going on for two years and you didn’t give a shit that I was hurting. You only cared about your libido. Sam turned to her, his eyes red and watery.
“Fine.” He said and marched towards his car. “Don’t ask me to do any more favors for you.” He said, got into his car, slammed the door closed and sped out of the driveway, his wheels slipping on the snow, back end of the car fishtailing down the street. She blew air out of her mouth and then headed back inside.
****************************************************************************
The lawyer’s office was pretentious and boastful. The walls were covered in oak paneling and awards and certificates adorned them. He sat in a large, overstuffed black leather chair and folded his hands.
“It would seem Karen that Sam doesn’t want you taking the kids out of state to live.” Karen, who’s anger had already been ignited by the fact that she had been subpoenaed to appear in court over her recent decision to move to California was ready to kill.
“He can’t stop me, can he?” She asked. Charles Leving, Karen’s divorce lawyer from the first time she had dealings with Sam nodded quickly.
“Yes, he can stop you. And my guess is that he will.” She twisted her hands in her lap anxiously.
“What can I do?” Charles thought a moment before speaking.
“We can try to appeal to him, to see how serious he is about all this. Sometimes men try to use it as a bargaining tool. Do you have anything to bargain with?” Karen sighed and shook her head.
“I doubt it.” He sat up in the chair and made some notes on a pad of paper.
“Okay, let me try something first then we’ll take it from there.” He set the pen down on the pad and eyed Karen.
“Are you really sure this is what you want? To take them to live in California?” She had never been so sure of anything in her life. If it had been any other man who’d asked her to ditch her life in Ohio and move all the way across country she wouldn’t do it, but for Josh she most certainly would.
“Yes. I’m more then sure of it.” He stood, indicating that the session was over. “Then we’ll do our best.” He placed his hand on her lower back and saw her to the door.
She left with a less then hopeful feeling.
CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
“How’s it going?” Josh asked, his cell phone cradled between his shoulder and his ear. He folded a tee-shirt and stuffed into his suitcase. He sighed. What was the point of folding it if he was just going to tuck it in any old way. He heard Karen sigh on the other end.
“Not good.” She closed a box and taped it. Using her teeth to pull the cap off a Sharpie she wrote ‘hall closet.’
“What’s wrong?” He asked as he zipped the suitcase closed and stood it up on the floor. He was getting ready to head on out to Dallas from Houston.
“What’s right?” She snapped. “It’s not working, Josh, he’s fighting me tooth and nail. No matter what I do he comes back with something better.” He felt the sting of her anger and sighed.
“Maybe you need a better lawyer.” He suggested. She tossed the tape roller down onto the floor and clicked her tongue.
“It isn’t that, Josh. He doesn’t want me taking the kids out of the state. And he knows if they don’t go, I don’t go.”
“Jag off.” Josh seethed.
“He’s doing it on purpose.”
“Why?”
“To hurt me and to get even with you. He’s so jealous it’s not even funny.” Josh rolled his suitcase down the hallway and out to the limo where the driver took it from him and heaved it up and into the trunk. Josh got into the car and settled back against the seat.
“That’s awful. I hate that guy.”
“Not as much as I do.” She felt a churning in her chest and throat. She swallowed hard trying to disperse the pain to no avail. She would have to get up and chew up an antacid. She went through a whole bottle of them just last week and was now sure she was getting an ulcer.
“I’m sure.” Josh said and lay down on the seat. His head was throbbing and he was tired. “I still think we should get some team of LA lawyers and blast him out of the water.” Karen sighed disgustedly and rolled her eyes.
“It’s not going to help, Josh. If Charles can’t do it then no one can. Here in Ohio men’s rights are huge. He has every right not to let me take them if he doesn’t want to and no court in the state is going to go against that.” She got up off the floor and went into the bathroom in search of her bottle of Tums. He just wasn’t getting it. No matter how badly she wanted to go to California and live with him she wasn’t going to leave without the kids. Josh didn’t seem to understand. He had asked her last week if she would consider giving them up and having them visit and she almost took his head off and he still didn’t seem to comprehend the magnitude of it all.
“How about letting him have custody then?” She held the phone away from her ear and squeezed it tightly in frustration. Her teeth clenched and her jaw ached.
“Josh …” She said with all the patience she could muster. “I won’t let that happen.” He felt his eyes sting and his temple throbbed as she reiterated what she’d said a dozen times over the last month.
“Not even for me?” He whispered. She felt like she’d been punched in the belly. How could she answer that?
“Why would you even ask that?”
“’Cause I want to know.”
“You sure you want to know, Josh, really? You want me to answer that question?” He gulped and swallowed a lump in his throat. No, he wasn’t sure he wanted to know but he’d hoped it would stir up something inside her, something that she professed to feel not too long ago. How much she loved him and would do anything for him.
“Yeah, I want to know.” He muttered reluctantly.
“Okay then, no, not even for you. Not for all the money or diamonds in the world, not for you or anyone else would I give up my children.” Her words were a shocking blow to him and he felt dizzy momentarily. He shook his head to clear the fog.
“Oh God, I knew it.” He whispered almost inaudibly and mostly to himself.
“Then why’d you ask?” She said softly. She had sucked down three Tums and leaned against the sink to wait for them to work.
“I don’t know.” He said. There was silence for quite some time. “I just don’t know.” He said finally.
“I would never ask you to give up your career for me Josh. You know that, right?” He nodded and then said softly ‘yes.’ “So it’s the same thing when you ask me to give up my kids for you. Actually …” She thought a moment. “It’s not the same thing, they are my kids for God’s sake!” He lay quiet as the car began to move, his head pounding in rhythm to the wheels on the ground, his heart aching and his eyes burning.
“I’m sorry.” He whispered. He couldn’t talk any more, his throat was tight and he felt an overwhelming wave of grief. “I can’t talk right now. I have to go.” He said.
“I’m sorry too, Josh. You know how badly I want to be with you.” She rubbed her temples with her free hand.
“Yeah.” He whispered, not convinced. “Talk to you later.” He said and closed the phone, terminating the connection. Josh lay there, tears pooling up under his lids and then leaking out. They trickled down the sides of his face and into his ears. He wiped them away angrily. She wasn’t coming. She wasn’t really fighting for it he told himself. He rolled over onto his side and tried to sleep. He hadn’t been sleeping well lately and it was taking its toll on him. After a half hour he finally succumbed.
Karen paced the house. She was slowly packing and it was starting to look like she’d accomplished something. The house was growing empty. Her throat still burned from the acid reflux and she instinctively rubbed it hoping to make it feel better. It didn’t. She leaned back against the counter in the kitchen and noticed for the first time how yellowed the walls had become. There were huge white circles in the place of where her collectible Thomas Kinkade plates had been displayed. They were now neatly and safely packed covered with bubble wrap in a box in the living room. She stared at the white circles until she felt dizzy. She didn’t know what to do about this whole situation with Josh and Sam playing their testosterone game. She was being pulled like taffy in the middle between them. Josh knew she would never give up custody of the kids and yet he kept pushing for it. Sam knew she wouldn’t either and that’s why he kept fighting her. And there she was a pawn in the center of it all. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to be with Josh, she wanted it more then anything else in the world but she wouldn’t give up the kids for it. Grief washed over her and she began to sob. For the first time ever in her life she loved someone so much that it hurt. She knew Josh loved her too, he wouldn’t go through the things he did just to be with her if he didn’t. And the ridicule he endured over their age difference proved to her how much he loved her as well. She knelt down to the floor, covered her face and wept. She wept for her, she wept for Josh, and she wept for the kids. She wept for the love she had that would never be able to flourish and grow into what it should be. She would always be stuck in Ohio, near Sam, at her crappy job, with nothing but weekends and short visits from Josh: if he would even tolerate that any longer. She cried until she had no more tears left in her and then she crawled onto her bed, wrung out and beaten, and slept for some time. When she woke she dragged herself to the bathroom, washed her face and stared at herself in the mirror. She looked old and worn; exactly the way she felt. She was tired and her body ached. Her mind was fatigued and she was sick of thinking. She couldn’t go through this any longer. She knew what she had to do.
