Chapter 9
“No! don’t, please, not now.” the quieted cries woke the dark haired boy. This was certainly a first, but what was going on in the next room that had someone so upset?
“Shut up, Daisuke! If you wake Niikura, then you’re as good as dead.” the sound of Sakoshi’s voice reached Kaoru’s ears, peaking the latter’s interest in what was going on. The boy got out of bed, and went to the door to the bedroom next to his own.
“Please, Sakoshi, don’t.” Daisuke’s voice was quieter, but Kaoru could tell that he was crying. “No. Please. Not here.” Kaoru frowned before hearing the sound of flesh hitting flesh. Hard. Before he could stop himself, Kaoru opened the door. What he saw before him would change everything he ever knew, and would know from that day forward.
Sakoshi sat on Daisuke’s waist, the latter’s pants were pulled down to his ankles and he was facing the floor.
“What the fuck are doing?!” Kaoru asked his friend, shocked at what he was seeing.
“I told you he was good for something. Here, make him useful.” Sakoshi said, pressing his cousin’s crying face to the floor as he addressed his friend.
“Please, help me..?” Daisuke’s voice was quiet, but still loud enough for Kaoru to hear, and to his displeasure, so did Sakoshi. Kaoru watched on as Sakoshi sent a fierce slap across the younger boy’s turned face. That was it. Kaoru wasn’t going to stand for any more. In three quick strides, the older of the friends took his guest by the throat and lifted him off of the other boy before pinning him to the wall.
“Don’t you touch him again. Ever. Do you hear me?” As Kaoru said the words, something within him seemed to be awakened. An anger which he had never known. Anger at everyone. Himself. His friend. Even Daisuke, whom he didn’t even know. He wasn’t even entirely sure why he was angry, he just knew that he wanted so badly to break his friend’s frail body.
“Oh, come on. Don’t let that face fool you. He likes it.” Kaoru’s grip tightened on the throat it held on to, and he turned to face Daisuke. The younger boy was now curled into a tight ball, his whole body shaking.
“Get the fuck out. And don’t ever come around here again.” Kaoru threw Sakoshi out of the bedroom, and into the wall on the other side of the hall.
“You’re taking that fucking wimp’s side?”
“It looks to me like you’re the fucking wimp.” Kaoru said coldly through gritted teeth. “Now, leave or I’ll call the cops.”
“You’ll regret this.” Sakoshi said, walking toward the door. “I hope you two will be happy when you’re fucking.” that was the last straw. Kaoru didn’t bother with words this time. He reached the younger man quickly and planted his fist in the other’s face. Shock was apparent on Sakoshi’s face, and Kaoru’s hand was felt once more hitting the flesh of his face repeatedly. The dark haired boy didn’t stop until he felt a gentle touch on his shoulder. Turning, his fist stopped only a couple inches from Daisuke’s frightened face.
“Enough. Please, don’t hit him anymore.” the younger man seemed to have no more will, even as he made the request for his cousin’s abuse to cease. Kaoru stared at him for a moment, before nodding slowly. He opened the door and picked his former friend up by the collar of his shirt, then proceeded to throw him out of his apartment.
Kaoru sat up on the couch. ‘Great, now I know I drank too much.’ he thought as he lit a cigarette.
* Later that week *
Toshiya sat down next to Die, who seemed to be lost in his own thoughts.
“Die? What are you thinking about?” the blue haired bassist asked. He had noticed that the red head hadn’t moved from the couch in at least 5 hours, and was starting to worry for his boyfriend. The guitarist didn’t seem to hear the younger man, and Toshiya gently touched his shoulder. This caused the other to jump, and his hand quickly ran across the blue haired boy’s face before he had a chance to stop it. The bassist looked at Die in shock as tears collected in his eyes.
The red head sat in shock also, unable to move or even speak, as he watched the stunned bassist get up from the couch, crying as he stormed out.
“T- Toshiya!” Die finally came back enough to get off the couch and out to the front of the apartment, only to realize that the bassist was nowhere in sight. He quickly ran back inside and called the other’s cell.
“Hello?” Toshiya’s crying voice came through the small device.
“Toshiya, I’m--” he was quickly cut off by a ‘click’. He dialed the number again, this time without an answer. The red head tried again for the next several minutes, but the bassist never answered the cell. Finally, Die gave up and dialed a different number.

Toshiya walked down the street, tears falling from his eyes. He had never expected the other man to hit him. He couldn’t help but to think that he was somehow losing the one person he needed faster than he had been able to get him. ‘If he had said he didn’t want to talk, I would have left him alone. All he had to do was say something.’ Toshiya quickly wiped the tears from his face as he approached the door to his friend’s apartment. He stopped before the familiar door, and raised his hand, about to knock when the door suddenly flew open and the small form of Kyo ran quickly past him, not even bothering to shut the door behind himself. After watching the vocalist disappear around the corner of the building, Toshiya leaned into the apartment slightly.
“Shinya? Are you here?” Toshiya asked, trying not to let on too much that he had been crying.
“Yeah, come in.” Shinya’s voice called from somewhere around the kitchen. The bassist accepted the invitation and made his way to the entrance of his friend’s kitchen, closing the door and removing his shoes as he entered. “I didn’t hear you knock, otherwise I would have gotten the door.” Shinya said, before turning to look at the blue haired man. “Oh, my god, Toshiya. What happened to you?” the drummer’s eyes went wide the moment he saw the older man’s face. Toshiya was somewhat confused and looked into a mirror only to see that his normally pale face was red and slightly bruised where Die had hit it. Seeing this caused him to shrink to the floor, curling into himself as he did, where he once again started crying. Shinya was quickly at his side, trying his hardest to comfort the older one, while still trying to find out what had happened to him. “Shhh… Toshiya… Totchi…. It’s okay. Shhh…” the drummer sat there, patting and petting his friend’s back in a soothing manner. “What happened to you?” Shinya whispered, taking his friend’s chin gently in his hand and raising it so that their eyes met. Toshiya’s normally charismatic eyes reflected only pain and disbelief as the red head looked into them, and the drummer knew without doubt that something was wrong.
“He… he hit me…” the bassist’s voice sounded so lost. It was as if he were a completely different person… a frail person, almost like a small child, rather than a full grown adult.
“Who hit you? Die?” Toshiya nodded weakly, before turning away and hiding his face under his arms, as he continued sobbing. Shinya clenched his jaw. He never knew he could get so angry with someone. “That son of a bitch.” the sentence was short, and cold. The bassist pulled his face from the shield of his arms and looked at the younger man, amazed by the immensely strange sound in his voice. “He has a lot of nerve calling up here saying that you are mad at him. Of course you’re mad, look at you! You have every right to be mad after he hit you!” Shinya said, his voice dark. Toshiya found this new behavior rather terrifying. He had never seen the drummer so angry with someone, in fact, he had never even been able to -imagine- that the baby brother of their band was capable of getting angry.
“I’m not mad at him, though.”
“You should be. He deser-- wait, what?” Shinya was caught off guard by the bassist’s statement.
“I’m not mad at him. I just want to know why he is mad at me.” Shinya sat staring at his friend in disbelief. How could he allow someone to hit him, and not be angry? Even more so, if the one who did the hitting claimed to love him?
*meanwhile*
Kyo threw down his ump-teenth cigarette as he approached the red head’s apartment. It didn’t take long for him to notice the older man sitting in a tight ball in front of the door.
“Die?” the blonde addressed the guitarist when he was almost standing next to him. Die looked up at Kyo, his carefree eyes filled with sorrowful tears, and his joyful smile was nowhere to be seen. He didn’t say a word, and for a long couple of minutes they remained as they were, in total silence. Kyo was finding it hard to look at his normally happy friend now extremely sad. Without a second thought, the vocalist knelt down and wrapped his arms around his friend. He had to fight hard to keep from joining when the older man began to cry uncontrollably into his shoulder.
“I hit him. I- I hit Toshiya.” Kyo felt his heart sink. He was the first to find out about the guitarist’s feelings for the pretty bassist, after Die himself, of course. He was also the first to figure out that Toshiya loved Die. He had been the one to point the fact out to the bassist. The blonde knew that Die never meant to hurt Toshiya, in any way whatsoever.
“Shhh… come on.” Kyo said, lifting himself and his friend to their feet. Once they were up, the blonde began walking the guitarist away from the apartment door.
“Where are we going?” Die asked. He didn’t sound like himself, and Kyo found the struggle with his tears grow even more difficult.
“We have to get your mind off of what happened.” even as he said it, the vocalist was in disbelief of the fact that he was leading the taller man to the nearest bar. His plan was to get him drunk enough to think it was all just a bad dream. It wouldn’t have been the first time this method had been used, thought Kyo was usually the one trying to protest it, rather than the one buying the beer and alcohol or even leading him to the bar.
When they entered, the two men were met with several recognizing and curious stares.
‘Great. The bar couldn’t be empty today?’ Kyo thought, as they made their way to seats. Die and Kyo sat at the bar, they had already been recognized, and knew they wouldn’t be able to hide. “Bartender!” the man on the other side turned to face the vocalist.
“Yeah?” Kyo didn’t like the way the other man was looking at him, but he decided to dismiss it for the moment.
“Get me a beer, and my friend needs your hardest liquor.” the blonde placed the order and waited while the bartender stared at him, a humored look on his face. “Did you hear me, or do I have to spell it out for you?”
“I heard you, alright, kid. How-”
“Who the FUCK are you calling KID?! I’m fucking 30 YEARS OLD, now get me my GOD DAMNED DRINK!” Kyo yelled, standing up land grabbing the bartender by the collar of his shirt. The man stared in shock and some of the customers laughed at the sight. Die, feeling somewhat embarrassed, reached out and pulled Kyo’s hand away from the other man’s shirt after successfully prying his fingers open.
The bartender nodded and went for the drinks without so much as another syllable leaving his mouth.
It wasn’t long before the red head had downed five bloody Maries, seven vodka/hot damn mixes, twelve shots of tequila, and four glasses of whisky. With each glass he emptied, he grew a little more drunk, and told Kyo another piece of very unwanted information. The blonde always knew Die to be very talkative, but this was beyond ridiculous. Ever since halfway through the third bloody Mary, the only time the guitarist wasn’t talking was when he was taking a drink. Kyo felt as though his head was going to explode from all of the information he was receiving. Finally, the vocalist had had enough. Trying hard to not seem mad, Kyo set his hands on Die’s shoulders, effectively stopping the older man from talking on.
“Die, I think you’ve had enough to drink. We should get going now.” the blonde stood up and made to help his drunken friend.
“What? But… I was just getting started….” the red head said, just before catching his fall on the bar top. The building was nearly empty, and the few remaining occupants who weren’t them or the bartender were either asleep or unconscious. Kyo grabbed Die’s arms to help stable him as they made their way out.
* * *
Shinya and Toshiya were silent as they walked down the somewhat familiar alley.
“Hmm… “ Toshiya said, thoughtfully, catching his friend’s attention as he broke the silence.
“What?”
“The apartment isn’t far from here.” the bassist replied. Shinya smiled slightly at the fact that, even though he was so sad, his friend was able to smile at that thought. “I wonder where, and how, Die is.” just as Toshiya finished the sentence, he accidentally walked into the back of Shinya. “What is it?” the blue haired man asked, looking up. He was about to get his answer.
*meanwhile*
Kyo and Die hand only managed to take a couple of steps before the red head broke into a fit of tears. The blonde could only watch as his friend turned to the brick wall for support.
“Die?” Kyo said, reaching out and placing a hand on the older man’s shoulder.
“Why does Toshiya hate me?” the guitarist managed to say between sobs. Kyo knew he would not be able to stand very much more of this. “I didn’t mean to hit him and… and I tried to apologize, but he- he wouldn’t- he wouldn’t listen to me and-” the vocalist turned Die so that they were looking at each other.
“Die, Toshiya does NOT hate you. He LOVES you.” even as Kyo said this, the red head scoffed and turned back to the brick wall. The vocalist was less than pleased with his response, and grabbed his arm again, this time a little rougher than he had intended. Die winced slightly as he was pulled harshly away from the wall, but at this point, Kyo was way past being gentle.
* * *
“Die…” before he could react, Die felt Kyo’s lips press against his own. He just stood there, shocked and unable to move even to push the other man from himself.
As Shinya rounded the corner, he looked up, just in time to see Kyo pull Die in front of himself, and then kiss the older man. Toshiya bumped into him and looked up in time to see Die and Kyo kissing. -His- Die was kissing another man. The bassist’s eyes filled and stung with tears as thoughts of the “truth” he thought he thought he knew flooded his mind. Chocking on a sob, he turned and ran, unable to watch any more of what was going on. Unable to stand there as the man he loved touched and kissed one of his best friends. Shinya looked over to see that Toshiya had already left.
It wasn’t long before Die got back enough will to push Kyo from his lips. This was more than enough to sober the red head.
“I’m sorry, but… I don’t love you that way.” the guitarist said, shaking his head and earning an understanding nod from the shorter vocalist. “I… I have to find Toshiya… I have to apologize to him.” Die didn’t even wait for a reply before he turned and ran from the area.
Kyo turned to go home and immediately saw Shinya standing there, just at the end of the alley. He could not move as he watched Shinya turn and disappear into darkness, shaking his head as he did so.
