Chapter 9
xx Skylar
"No it's this way," I said as I tugged on your hand pulling you in the direction I wanted you to follow me to.
"But I really think it's this way," you said pulling me in your direction.
"Would you two please stop a minute?" my mother scoffed looking at us. "Let's look at the screen shall we?"
"We need to be at Gate 38," my father said as he looked up at the screen. "And that's over there," he said pointing.
"Well let's go," I said as you grabbed my hand, lacing our fingers together as we moved in the direction my father had pointed out. Standing in the long line to get checked over I leaned my head on your shoulder. "Will I like Finland?" I asked.
"It's a bit cold right now, but it's beautiful. I can't wait to show you everything," you said as you leaned your head on top of mine, holding my waist.
"I'm nervous," I admitted. "What if they don't like me?"
"Who? My family or the guys?"
"Well I know the guys like me already you dumbass. I met them at the party, remember?" I said with a giggle.
"That's right," you said with a chuckle. "It's been a whirlwind of a few days. Forgive me that my memory ran away."
"It's okay," I said. "Look – we're moving," I said as we moved forward.
Once we got our passports and IDs looked over we were confirmed so we took our seats in the waiting area. Once everyone was settled into a seat my mom picked up a book and my dad began reading a newspaper. Sighing I rested my head on your shoulder and looked up at you.
"So…will they like me?" I asked. You looked down at me, smiled, and ran your fingers through my hair.
"If I do then I'm sure they will," you assured me. I wrapped my left hand around your toned arm and squeezed. "Don't be nervous," you said. "They'll love you."
"I hope so," I said doubting myself.
"What's not to love about you anyway?" you asked. "You're extremely beautiful, you're warm and caring, you're smart, and you're carrying my child," you said tenderly.
"I can't wait until the baby's born," I said softly. You ran your finger down my face and smiled a true Lauri smile at me.
"Neither can I," you agreed. "Have you thought of names?"
"Yes," I said. "I have American names picked out. We need to talk about that, Lauri. I want to give the baby your last name regardless of our situation. Are you okay with that?"
"I'd be honored," you smiled at me. "What about those names?"
"I like Jayde for a girl, but spelt J-a-y-d-e. The middle name would be Nicole," I said. "And I've always liked Zachary for a boy. Jordan for a middle name but I'm just not sure if you want a Finnish name since the baby will have your last name," I said.
"An American name sounds nice. I like the ones you have picked out," you told me. "It doesn't matter to me just as long as you and the baby are okay." I scrunched up my nose at a thought that ran through my head.
"Jayde sounds nice with Ylonen, but Zachary doesn't go right. Maybe if it were a boy we'd give it a Finnish name?" I asked.
"We could do that too," you agreed. "I just want you to be happy."
"I'm most happy when I'm with you," I said and squeezed your arm tighter. I looked up into your eyes. You were perfect, Lauri. "I know I said it in the past, but it feels right to say it again. And for the record, I'm opening myself up to you again so please don't break my heart again."
"Never again," you vowed.
"Well…Lauri…I love you," I said. Your eyes became so warm and inviting when my words hit your ears. "You don’t have to say it back. I know it's soon, but I wanted you to know how I feel, how I've always felt."
"Give me time," you said. I nodded. "I don't think I need to say it for you to know how I feel," you explained. "Just give me time. It's too soon."
"Okay Lauri," I said.
Our flight was called and we headed to the line to board the plane so I could meet your family. I was amazed when they sat us in first class. I normally sat in coach. Boy how nice it was knowing you!
xx Lauri
After a meal and a nice sleep, we were landed in my hometown of Helsinki. It felt nice to finally be home and to see familiar surroundings. Not that I minded Massachusetts, but home will always be where the heart is.
After grabbing our luggage I led you and your parents out of the airport and found the person who I missed the most. Waving my hands frantically I skidded to a halt when I wrapped my arms around her, picking her off the ground, spinning her around happily.
"I'm happy to see you home too," she said and I smiled. I embraced her again and wove my fingers through her hair.
"I missed you Hannah," I said as I held her at arms length. "God you keep getting more beautiful by the day," I said making her giggle. I felt your tiny hand on my shoulder and I turned my head to the side and looked downward at you. A smile crept to my face. "Hannah…this is Skylar. My girlfriend," I introduced her. I saw a bright smile light up your face. "She's American," I said in Finnish. Hannah looked at me quickly and then back to you and smiled.
"Nice to meet you," she said in English. "Lauri, I didn't know you went to America to find yourself a girlfriend," Hannah chuckled. "There are women here in Finland too you know," she finished in Finnish.
"Can it," I replied to her in my native tongue. "Hannah this is Sky's parents, Matt and Jenna," I said.
"Moi, nice to meet you," Hannah said shaking your parents' hands. I could tell you were nervous. Wrapping my arm around your waist I pulled you closer to me. Everything would be fine.
"Moi?" Jenna asked.
"It means hello in my language," I explained to your mother. She smiled.
"Interesting. I'll have to remember that," she said and looked at her husband with a quick smile.
"Hannah let's go home. I want to see mom and dad," I said and we began our journey to my old home. The home I grew up in.
"And then he fell out of the tree…" Hannah giggled as she took a sip of her wine.
"Why is it that whenever I have guests over you feel the need to embarrass me dear sister?" I asked as I took a bite of my food.
"Because little brother, it’s the code of siblings. As the older sibling I take full responsibility in making your life a living hell," she said as she laughed. I remember hearing your laugh ringing in my ears. It was the most genuine sound I've ever heard.
"So tell me Lauri, how have your travels been?" my mother asked me.
"Good," I replied. "I had good times in America. It's so much different than Finland and it's been a fulfilling trip," I said as I winked at you.
"I see. So tell us how you met Skylar here," my father said pointing to you.
"The guys and I were asked to do a private performance for Sky's twenty-six birthday party. She's a fan you know," I said.
"Is she really?" my mother asked and looked at you skeptically.
"I am," you said. "I've been a Rasmus fan for almost a year now," you stated and smiled.
"Lauri why bring her all the way home if she's only a fan friend?" my mother asked. I knew I was getting closer to the truth, and somehow I began having feelings my parents weren't going to be as accepting as yours were.
"Because mom I care for her and she's my girlfriend," I said and took your hand under the table. I needed your support. I looked at you and you gave me a weak smile, looking over at your parents who looked back at you with concern on their faces.
"There are plenty of young Finnish women here who could care for you as well," my father said.
"Yes but I don't want any of them," I said. "I choose Skylar. She makes me happy," I said. You looked at me worried. You had no idea what was being said. I squeezed your hand harder.
"An American woman Lauri?" my father asked me in Finnish. "Why?"
"Because I love her, okay?" I said back in Finnish. My sister gasped. I looked over at her.
"Hannah please," I said with pleading eyes.
"How long Lauri?" she asked.
"How long what?" I asked.
"How long have you known her for?"
"Since February," I replied. My mother gasped.
"Please tell me she's not pregnant," my mother said. "Dear Lord please tell me you're not having an American child," she said.
"Actually I am," I said and squeezed your hand even harder. My mother gasped, my sister choked on her wine, and my father stared at me blankly.
"Son…you mean to tell us you and this American are having a child together?" my father asked. "Are you sure it's even yours? She said she's a fan. It could be a trap."
"Would you all please stop it? I love her, she loves me, we're happy, and we're having a baby. Her parents were thrilled with the news. I thought a grandchild would make you happy," I said.
"It would Lauri, but with someone who's not American," Hannah said. "I'm sure Sky is very nice but be real. We already hardly see you as it is. Where would you reside? My guess would be in America and then when would we see you? Probably never."
"Please just be happy for us. I'm elated to become a father. We've already decided the baby would have our last name and maybe an American first name. We don’t even know the sex yet and probably won't know until it's born," I said. I looked at you and your parents and said in English, "they know about the baby now." I saw a breath release from your mouth. You smiled shyly at my family.
"Surprise," you said timidly shrugging your shoulders.
"Surprise is right," Hannah said giving you a fake smile. My mom and dad looked at you and gave you a forced smile as well.
My plan was already starting to crumble.
