Enjoy the Silence Chapter 9
Orlando didn’t fall asleep immediately. His mind was full of thoughts and feelings. What if she was pregnant? Am I ready to be a father? If she is pregnant, do we get married? He loved her, that much he did know, but would that be enough? After much thought and consideration, he decided that he would marry her. He couldn’t imagine his life without her. Even if she wasn’t pregnant he wanted to marry her, but then they could take more time. After he made that decision, his mind was more at ease; he was finally able to fall asleep.
The alarm woke them both up as it beeped its way into their slumber. Cassy rolled over and told him that he could sleep for a bit longer. He grunted as he rolled over onto her pillow, burying his face in it. She laughed as she went towards the bathroom for her morning ritual.
She got dressed hurriedly and went downstairs to take care of Missy and make breakfast. By the time she woke Orlando up, breakfast was finished and he had plenty of time to get ready for work and have breakfast. He entered the fragrant kitchen, following the smell of pancakes and syrup.
Cassy was placing the pancakes on the table along with the jug of syrup. There was also a small jar honey and a little jar of jam. She looked up as he entered the kitchen, giving him a grin.
“ Good Morning,” she said smiling, “ I hope you like pancakes. Can you grab the orange juice out of the refrigerator, please?” She asked as she sat down.
He came to the table with the orange juice and a smile. He teased her about the flour she had on her shirt and the mess in the kitchen. She informed him that the more of a mess in the kitchen the better the cook was. He laughed and leaned over to kiss her nose. They had a nice breakfast and good conversation, but of course he did have to go to work. So he gave her a passionate hug and delicious kiss. She almost didn’t let him go.
“I’ll see you later honey.” Orlando said as he left. She let Missy in after seeing him off. The dog ran to her bowl and ate her breakfast, then settled down for a nap.
Cassandra cleaned up the kitchen and went upstairs to clean up her room. She stripped the sheets from the bed and looked at the ripped sheet. She would have to buy a new sheet to replace it.
“ Whooo-hoo, an excuse to go shopping.” She shouted. Cassy changed out of the flour-covered shirt she was wearing and pulled on her sneakers. She ran down the stairs and grabbed her leather jacket along with her keys and purse.
Three Hours later.
Cassandra unlocked the door and walked into the foyer. She set the bags down, as Missy jumped around and whined. Cassy put her outside on the lead and headed up the stairs with her purchases. She had bought a couple of sets of sheets along with the new fitted sheet for her favorite set. She had also bought a new nightgown. It wasn’t something she really planned on sleeping in…. Not if she had any say in it. The gown was made of dark blue silk. It was actually long, but it was sheer and form fitting. The gown complimented her curves as it also left things to the imagination. She already had a robe to go with it. Deanna had brought the silk robe from France and it was dark blue with a silver edge to it. Cassy never had any reason to wear it, but now she did. She smiled as she put the gown away; Orlando wouldn’t know what hit him.
She took the new sheets along with her other laundry down to the basement and started a load. Just as she was closing the lid, the phone upstairs rang. When she got the phone, she looked at the called ID and saw that it was a number that she didn’t recognize. She answered.
“ Hello” She said cautiously. Cassy could just barely hear breathing, but no one answered.
“ Hello, I can hear you breathing,” she paused. “Well who ever you are, why don’t you get a life?” Then she hung up.
Just as she was leaving the kitchen, the phone rang again. Cassandra stomped back to the phone, picking it up without looking at the caller ID.
“ Damn it leave me alone you asshole….”
“ Whoa…wait a sec, Cassy it’s me.” She heard Orlando yell, trying to prevent her from hanging up on him.
“ Oh…Honey I’m sorry…I just got a prank call a few seconds ago. Is everything okay?” She said as she sat down at the table.
“ Yeah, everything is okay. I just wanted to call and hear your voice…Now what’s this about a prank call? What happened?” He asked with concern.
“ All I heard was someone breathing. Whoever it was wouldn’t say anything and I didn’t recognize the number on the caller ID. I don’t know…I guess it pissed me off. I’m sorry for yelling at you. I’ll make it up to you. I’ve got a surprise for you.” Cassy teased.
“ Oh really…I wonder what it could be? Hmmm…. Maybe it’s a new stethoscope or maybe a new pair of socks?” He joked.
“Well you’ll just have to wait until tonight won’t you? I’m cooking tonight. I need to start now actually. So my love I will see you later...Okay?”
“ So what are you cooking? Or is that a surprise too?”
“ I really want black beans and white rice… I think a salad too. Is that okay with you?” She asked uncertainly.
“ Actually I’ve never had black beans before. Red beans, pink beans, green beans, and almost every other kind of bean, But no black beans. You can cook anything you want. I’m sure it will be great.” He said. “ I have to go my next patient is here. I love you, I’ll see you later.”
“ I love you too, see ya.” Then hung up. She them went to let Missy back in. The large dog was waiting at the door and rushed in as Cassy unhooked her. The dog ran right for her bowl of water and drank her fill. Then she found a spot on the floor and lay down. Cassy followed Missy into the kitchen and went to the pantry. She got out the necessities for making Cuban style black beans and set them on the counter. She got everything ready to start, then turned the heat on to low. She was about to walk away but remembered to put the top on.
“ Okay, that’s it for now. I need to do a little cleaning then I can work on my miniatures for a bit. She got out cleaning supplies and started on the downstairs bathroom, then moved to the rest of the house. It took her about an hour to go around the house doing the light cleaning that it took to keep up the large townhouse. She went about checking the beans then went down to check the laundry. After that was done she got a bottle of water out of the refrigerator and then went upstairs to paint a little.
Orlando sighed; his day was almost finished. He had a busy day and was worn out. One of the women in the waiting room went into labor. She wasn’t even a patient; she was waiting for her husband. They were able to get her to the hospital in plenty of time for her to have her baby, but the woman was hysterical. Orlando had to calm her down and made sure that she remained that way until the EMTs got there. The woman had held his hand until her husband was found and brought out. She had a grip of steel and his hand was bruised and very sore, but it wasn’t something he could be upset about. She was in more pain then he was. He finished his paperwork and went out to the nurse’s station. He smiled at Caroline and handed her the paperwork.
“ I’m out of here. My Ladies, have a good evening…and Caroline don’t get into any trouble” He said as he gave her a peck on the cheek.
The older woman blushed, “ Doctor Bloom, I’m almost old enough to be your mother, so you behave yourself” She waved him off. The other nurse giggled and laughed as he walked out.
Orlando went out to his Land Rover. Just as he was getting in he heard someone come up behind him. He glanced around and saw that it was Marilyn Johnson.
“ Damn” He hissed. Maybe if he just ignored her she would go away. Of course that didn’t work, she walked right up to his vehicle and put her hand on the door.
“ Hello, Orlando” She said with what he assumed was her come hither look.
“ Miss Johnson, I wasn’t aware that we were on a first name basis.” He said as politely as he could.
“ Oh Orlando, you don’t need to be that way with me.” She simpered. “ I was hoping to get to know you better. I was wondering if you would like to have dinner with me tonight? I can make a nice steak for you with all the trimmings…”
“ First of all, Miss Johnson, I am a vegetarian. And second I am seeing someone seriously. I really have no interest in getting to know you better. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go. Have a good evening.” He said as he pulled the door out of her hand and started up his vehicle. Marilyn continued to stand there, looking murderous. He backed out of the parking spot and drove away.
Marilyn stood there in the parking lot, with tears of anger and frustration in her eyes. She couldn’t believe it. He said no to her. It had to be that fat bitch from the restaurant. She couldn’t understand what he could see in a woman like that.
“ Damn that bitch.” She yelled out into the empty parking lot. Marilyn stomped towards her car and started it and drove home. When she got home she slammed into her spotless trailer. Everything was in its place, as she couldn’t stand clutter. She went directly to the phone and picked up the receiver she dialed the number she knew by heart now and waited for an answer.
Cassandra was on her way down the steps when the phone rang again. She ran for the phone, hoping it was Orlando.
“ Hello” She said breathlessly
There was silence, but she could hear breathing. Cassy was sick and tired of this, whoever it was had called several more times today. Cassy put the phone down as gently as she could. She went to get her cell phone and called a friend who worked for the Phone Company. She told him the situation and was put on hold for a couple of minutes. She went back and checked to see if the person was still there. Incredibly they were, so she put the phone back down and went back into the dining room. Jeff, her friend was able to give her the number and the name of the caller.
“ You owe me one Cassy. I could get in trouble for doing this for you. Good luck.”
“ Thanks, I’ll talk to you later” She hung up and went back to the phone. The person that was calling was Marilyn Johnson. Cassandra picked up the phone.
“ Marilyn, why are you calling me like this? Are you bored? Do you not have a life? I’m going to warn you one time and one time only, if you call here one more time I will call the police and have you arrested for harassment.” With that said she hung up. Cassandra sat down at the table and sighed. That woman was a nut case, a certifiable lunatic. Unfortunately that sort of person could be dangerous. She got up and went to check the beans, they were almost finished, and she put the finishing touches on the beans and started the rice. After doing that she put together the salad. She then mixed up a simple dressing of oil and vinegar with some herbs. She set it aside and turned off the heat for the rice. Cassandra was about to go down to the basement to bring up the last of her laundry, but she heard Missy barking.
She could tell just by Missy’s bark that is was someone she knew and liked. Of course it was Orlando. She opened the door and let him in. He smiled brightly and swept her into his arms, giving her a fervent kiss.
“ So how was your day?” Cassandra asked as she led him to the living room. They both sat down on the couch. He told her about what happened with pregnant woman and Marilyn. She sat up straight when he said Marilyn’s name.
“ Oh really, that crazy bitch. She called here several times today. I have a friend who works for the Phone Company. They were able to find out who was calling. I told that nut case that if she ever called again I would call the police. Then I hung up. So I don’t know if that worked, but if she does call again I will call the police. She is harassing us and I’m not going to put up with it. And if that doesn’t work, I’ll kick her ass” She said vehemently
“ Well, I certainly don’t want to piss you off.” Orlando teased. He pulled her into a hug and kissed her nose.
She smiled and then stood, “ Dinner is ready. I hope you are hungry.”
“ Starving, It smells so good in here.” He followed her into the kitchen.
She set the small table in the kitchen and put out the food in large bowls for self-serving in the table. The salad was taken out of the refrigerator and set on the table as well. They had a nice dinner and good conversation. They cleaned up and went into the living room and turned on the stereo. Cassy listened to an eclectic mix of music, Depeche Mode to Celine Dion, Savage Garden to the Tea Party; she had shelves of CD’s. Her roommate had a six-disc changer along with her stereo. So Cassy had Cheap Trick, the Tea Party, Creed, Live, John Secada and Mark Anthony in the player at the moment. She hit play and scramble so that the player would mix up the songs it played. Then went back into the living room to sit on the couch with Orlando. He pulled her against him and wrapped his arms around her. The first song that came on was The Flame by Cheap trick. It was another one of her favorite songs. She sang softly along with the song
Wherever you go, I'll be with you.
Whatever you want, I'll give it to you.
Whenever you need someone to lay your heart and head upon.
Remember: after the fire, after all the rain,
I will be the flame.
I will be the flame.
Orlando listened to Cassy singing softly with the song. As he listened to the words, he felt his heart tighten with emotion, the song was about someone whose love had gone away. The singer was telling his love that he would always be there for her and that if she ever needed someone he would be there for her. He had never really listened to the lyrics, he could understand why this would be a song Cassy liked. It was a poignant song. After a few minutes Orlando got up and started a fire, just as he was coming back to the couch Cassandra got up.
“ I’ll be back in a bit, I just want to take a shower and get into something more comfortable.” She smiled and left the living room without waiting for his reaction. He sat down and leaned back on the couch. He smiled as he let his eyes drift shut.
A/N I know that in real life you wouldn’t be able to get information from the phone company, even if a friend worked there, but just for the story, let’s go with it =)
