Disclaimer: This is a work of fiction. I do not know the members of My Chemical Romance. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
A/N: Okay, so the updates might either go a lot faster, or a lot slower. It all depends on my plot bunnies that seem to be either rushing around or sleeping (damn lucky bunnies!). Also I might be heading over to stay with my roommate's family for a few days coming up this week, so updates might be stilted because of that. But I shall try to work around stuff.
Also, to all of my readers of "Family Tradition" fic, don't fret, the story is far from over, I'm just having a bit of a roadblock to my bunnies on that fic (mainly because of their ideas for this one, but oh well). I'm going to try to get back to it soon.
So without any more useless author drivel, here's the next chapter. Forewarning, it's mainly just a useless filler chapter that I wrote the other day. So don't expect anything great. The good stuff is coming back, I promise. *hugs*

The three teens from the military base had arrived at school at lunchtime, as Mrs. Bryar had written them all excuses for the first three classes and then drove the sleepy teens to school. They made their way out to the courtyard and saw Frank and Mikey both looking rather worried and confused at the absence of their friends, although when they noticed the three walking up, Frank jumped up and walked over, the childish grin on his face as usual.
“So, what happened? Did the party last night get that wild? And I thought this was supposed to be a boring party.”
Natalie sat down at the table and put her head in her hands, still sleepy, despite the fact that she had probably gotten the more sleep than both the boys. Well, with the exception of when she had woken up in the middle of the night after having another nightmare about her parents. She had snuck into her brother’s room and curled up beside him and went back off to sleep, all thoughts of the nightmares forgotten.
“No, there was a drill last night. Well, not quite a drill, the alarms had a short circuit. We had to sit up in the mess hall almost all night.”
Ray ran a hand over his face, stifling another yawn before trying to eat the sandwich that his mother had made him bring, despite the fact that he wasn’t hungry. Bob merely sat without much expression, almost as if he had fallen asleep while sitting there. He had sat up most of the night at the mess hall, then had been woke up by Natalie crawling into bed with him after a nightmare, so he hadn’t been able to sleep much after that either.
“So, are you guys sure that you should be here? I mean it looks like you three are about to fall over.”
“Mom can’t write a full excuse for not sleeping. The base would probably punish her if she did, they might not even like her writing out the excuses for the first half of the day. At least we only have two classes though. So did we miss anything in class?”
“Not really. I picked up the homework from Craybourne for you and Ray. Gee will be around after school so you can ask about the theater class. He doesn’t have to work since it’s Thursday.”
“Thursday? Shit, man. Bob, are you sixteen or older?”
Natalie glanced over at Ray who seemed to have lost all the sleepiness from his eyes at the mention of it being Thursday. She frowned not knowing what was going on, especially given the question about how old they were.
“Yeah, we just turned sixteen a few months ago. Why, what’s wrong?”
“Junior officer training is on Thursdays. All males on the base over sixteen have to participate. It’s something they try to do to make us want to follow in our family’s footsteps sort of nonsense. It’s backwards if you ask me. The boys have to go through training and such, while the girls have their own lessons. But I don’t know what they’re going to do about you, since you’re the only girl of age on the base.”
“Not the finishing school nonsense again.”
“You know what I’m talking about then?”
“Unfortunately. At the last base they had something similar, just on a larger scale, because it was a larger base. All the boys are taught basic military and officer training, while the girls are given lessons on how to be proper young ladies and how to adjust to the life of a soldier’s wife.”
Frank must have found the concept to be amusing, because he suddenly burst out laughing, doing his best to stifle the noise before they got into trouble. Both Ray and Natalie turned to glare at him, before shaking their heads at the situation. Finally Frank seemed to calm down enough to speak without doing more than the occasional giggle.
“So, they’re basically trying to send you back to World War Two times, and make you follow right in your families’ footsteps? Do you guys have to wear costumes and pretend to be all proper and such?”
“Oh shove it, Frankie. Besides, it’s not funny. At the last base they even tried to push us into dating within the base only. They started imposing curfews and they would hold old-fashioned dances and such. It was crazy.”
“Can they even do that?”
Natalie shrugged in response to Mikey’s question. She didn’t think what they had done was right either, but then again, to the adults running the base, their opinions didn’t hold much weight. And not many of the boys on base seemed to have any objections to the matter, so the objections had been ignored.
“It happens. The adults seem to rule the world on base. There’s barely anything that we can do ourselves, so it’s not really that unusual. But then again, there are always those who oppose. The stronger they pushed for dating within the base only, the more I would stay out with off-base friends and such. Mom thought I was just being rebellious and silly, but at least Dad understood. The entire concept is wrong, so I never complied. And I certainly don’t intend on doing so now.”
Frank giggled in his normal childish manner at the sudden stubbornness of her response, and she shrugged. It was nothing really, she had always been a bit too opinionated for her own good sometimes. Natalie turned to Ray with a small shrug.
“So, what do you think I’m going to have to do? And you might want to call to remind Bob of the training.”
“I don’t know about you, but sure, I’ll call.”
“You have your number now? Share, please.”
Natalie giggled at Frank’s enthusiasm before pulling out a pen and jotting down the number on both Frank and Mikey’s hands with a smirk.
“That way you will have to work extra hard to lose it.”
“Brilliant. Now, who’s free after this base nonsense?”
