Jae awoke feeling more rested than she had in quite some time. She stretched and smiled to herself when she felt Kaoru's arms tighten around her. She gently turned around so she could face him. Soft rays of sunlight danced on his sleeping form. Jae reached out and pushed some of his hair out of his face. He made a little noise but otherwise didn't rouse from his slumber. She scooted closer to him and nuzzled his neck before placing several soft kisses on the spot. His arms tightened around her again.
"Good morning to you too" he whispered in her ear.
She giggled and looked up to find him smiling at her sleepily. He leaned down capturing her lips in a kiss. Their tongues wrestled for a few minutes unitl they broke apart for air, Kaoru's head falling back onto the pillow.
"Let's just stay in bed for the rest of the day" he said with a smile, glancing down at Jae.
She gave a small smile. "If that were at all possible, I'd agree in a heartbeat but I do believe you guys have a show tonight."
"Oh yeah" he said, disappointed. "Can't we just forget about that minor detail for a while longer?" He chuckled.
"Well" she said coyly, "I suppose a little longer won't hurt."
Kaoru's lips descended on hers again, this kiss more raw and demanding than the last. One of his hands moved up, threading his fingers into her hair as he flipped them over so he was laying on top of her. Jae's hands slid up under his t-shirt, caressing his bare back. He moved his mouth off of hers to leave a trail of kisses along her jaw and down her neck, stopping to suck on the tender flesh. Jae mewled and arched her body up against him. Kaoru groaned at the sudden contact, nipping the flesh at the juncture of her neck and shoulder. He had just started kissing a path down to her breasts when his cell phone started ringing. Groaning against her chest, he reached out to the bedside table, snatching the offending object with his tattooed hand. He lifted his head up to look at it, his face twisting in bewilderment. Why the hell is Die calling so early?
He sighed and flipped his phone open. "Hey, what's up?"
"Kao, you gotta come quick. Kyo's being all weird!"
"It's Kyo, when is he not being weird?"
"Dude, just get over here alright? This has something to do with Hitomi. She's got that damn shit-eating grin on her face again."
Kaoru rolled his eyes as he laid his head back down on Jae's chest. She ran her hands through his hair trying to relax him. He exhaled slowly and entwined his free hand with hers. "Alright, I'll be over shortly. Is Jae allowed to come?"
"I dunno, let me ask."
"Yeah, Kyo said he needs Jae."
Warning bells went off in Kaoru's head. He needs Jae? That doesn't bode well.
"Ok, we'll be there as soon as we can. Later." He flipped the phone shut and sat it back down on the bedside table, heaving a sigh once again.
"What's wrong?"
"Kyo is acting weird, Hitomi is being smug, and Die seems to think this is cause for alarm. He wants us to get to the hotel as soon as we can."
Jae slid her hand that was resting on his head down his back, rubbing it slowly. "I suppose we should get going then huh?"
"Yeah..." Kaoru said rubbing his face before lifting his head up to look at her, "...but we are so finishing this later" he said in a deep seductive voice that sent shivers down Jae's spine.
"Aye, aye captain" she said, giggling as she saluted him before sliding out from under him to get dressed.
Everyone was seated in a circle in Kyo's room, Jae watching him closely. He was pale and fidgety, making her wish like hell that someone would tell them what was going on. She turned to look at Kaoru to find him looking from Hitomi to Kyo, his gaze pensive. Glancing around the group, she noticed everyone seemed to be wearing the same puzzled expression.
"Would one of you be so kind as to tell us what the hell is going on?" Her words came out a little harsher than she intended.
"Patience is a virtue" Hitomi purred out.
Jae found herself hating Hitomi more everytime she opened her mouth. "One that I don't possess" came her dry reply.
Not wanting to look at Hitomi anymore, she turned to look at Kyo again to find him staring at her intently, an unreadable expression on his face. She gave him a warm smile but he just kept staring, making her wonder if he was really seeing her at all.
Hitomi cleared her throat. "The reason we called you here today is to tell you all that I'm pregnant. Kyo and I are having a baby!" she exclaimed jubilantly.
Eyes widened in shock and then inconspicuously turned to Jae. Her expression was blank. She swore her heart had stopped beating in her chest, though in all reality it was pounding so hard she thought it might explode. Her mouth became dry and when she parted her lips to speak, no words came out. Then everything went black.
Jae's eyes fluttered open meeting Kyo's concerned ones. He reached down pushing some hair out of her face.
"Are you alright?"
"Yeah." She tried to sit up but was stopped by Kyo's hand on her stomach.
"Just lay back and relax" he said quietly.
"Where's everyone else?"
"I sent them away. I wanted us to have some time alone since we haven't had much of that lately. We need to talk if you're feeling up to it."
"I'm fine and I agree that we need to talk. I've been trying to talk to you for days now."
Kyo swallowed and nodded. "I know. I'm sorry if it seemed like I was avoiding you. I was just trying to get things straight in my head."
Suddenly he layed down next to her, gathering her into his arms and pulling her close. He lay there silently, trying to memorize what it felt like to hold her, not knowing when he would get the opportunity to do so again. Jae sighed as she came to the painful realization that this was where she belonged, here in Kyo's arms where she felt content and safe, no words passing between them because there wasn't a need for empty conversation to fill the comfortable silence. Just under the surface, her heart constricted in anguish as it came to the conclusion her mind had long ago: though this was where she belonged, someone else had gotten there first. Tears stung the backs of her eyes and choking back a sob, she quickly turned in Kyo's arms, burying her face in the crook of his neck. He ran a hand up and down her back soothingly, all the while battling his own inner demons. She has to know. Even if we can never be together the way I want us to I still have to tell her. Kyo felt the wetness of Jae's tears against his neck as his heart started to break. He tried to blink back his own tears telling himself he had to be the strong one. He moved back and crooked a finger under her chin, forcing her to look up at him. She tried to reach up and wipe away the evidence that she had been crying but Kyo caught her hand before she had the chance.
"Let me" he said quietly, as his hands moved up to cup her face, his thumbs gently wiping away her tears. Jae's hands came up, loosely holding onto Kyo's wrists as his thumbs continued to stroke her now dry cheeks. He stared deeply into her eyes.
"I love you."
Jae knew from the intensity in his eyes that he wasn't referring to a platonic type of love. She wasn't sure of the reasoning behind his admission, especially in light of the news that he had a baby on the way, but she felt some unseen force pulling at her to tell him that his feelings were reciprocated. "I love you too, Kyo."
He smiled at her, but it was a sad smile, one laced with the recognition that their confessions of love complicated things rather than made them feel less burdened. Reality was slowly creeping in, threatening to ruin the moment. In a desperate attempt to hang onto it, Kyo did the only thing he could think to do; he kissed her. The kiss was slow and sensual, Kyo trying to pour every ounce of love he felt for Jae into this one kiss, this one moment. He sought to memorize the way their lips melded together, this feeling of completeness he only felt when he and Jae were together. Even if this never happened again, he would hold onto it forever, taking it with him to his grave. But just as soon as it had started it was over. They pulled back and looked at each other, their eyes shining with unbridled passion. Jae looked down, unable to bear the intensity in Kyo's eyes any longer. In a few short minutes, her world had come crashing to the ground. Not only was Kyo now going to be a father to someone other than Tristan, but he returned a love she thought was destined to forever be unrequited. Only in her dreams had those words fell from his lips, she almost felt like pinching herself to make sure she was awake. It all seemed so unreal. But the stark cold reality was there, reminding her that dreams were just that, dreams. Kyo had a responsibility to Hitomi and their unborn child and a relationship between he and Jae was highly unlikely. As if sensing her discomfort, Kyo kissed the top of her head and hugged her to himself. She wanted to get lost in his arms, forget the outside world, but she knew that simply wasn't possible. There was a question burning inside her, one she needed to know the answer to. She couldn't help but put herself in Hitomi's place. After all, it wasn't really that long ago when she too was carrying Kyo's child inside of her. She always wondered what his reaction would have been and now she finally had the chance to ask him.
"How do you feel about being a father?"
He cleared his throat. "Honestly? I'm terrified. I can't take care of myself, let alone anyone else. I wish she weren't pregnant. I don't want to marry her, I'm not even sure if I love her. I don't think I do. Does that make me a bad person?" He looked at her uncertainly, afraid she would hate him for saying such things.
"No, it doesn't make you a bad person, though I am a little surprised. I always thought you'd make a great father."
"Me? Really? I don't know, I'm torn. Part of me is kind of excited but the other part of me wants to run away. Is that normal? How did you deal with it when you found out you were pregnant?"
Jae swallowed convulsively, her voice barely above a whisper. "My situation...was...quite different."
Kyo looked at her quizically. "Different how?"
A soft knock at the door interrupted them. "Um...guys? Sorry to bother you, but we need to pick Axelle up from the airport. Are you still coming with us Kyo?" Die spoke softly.
"Yeah I'm coming. Is it alright if Jae comes too?"
"Of course, I'm sure Axelle would love to meet her! Just meet us downstairs in the lobby."
Jae looked up at Kyo. "Who's Axelle?"
He sat up, pulling her with him. "Die's girlfriend. She's really nice, but I'll let him tell you all about her" he said with a grin.
As soon as everyone was situated in the van, they were on their way to the airport. Hitomi had suctioned herself to Kyo's side yet again and Jae felt a twinge of jealousy stab at her. Then she looked to Kaoru and felt instantly guilty. I don't want to hurt you. Soon enough she was curled up against his side as Die started telling her about his girlfriend. Apparently she was originally from England but moved to Japan after she graduated, met Die at a local vegetable market, and the rest is history. It was a cute story the way Die told it, and Jae was anxious to meet her. Kaoru smiled as they watched Die's face break into grin after grin throughout his story. He leaned down to whisper into Jae's ear.
"He's going to marry that girl some day."
Jae smiled and nodded in agreement, fully believing Die probably would settle down with this girl. As soon as they arrived at the airport, Die practically leapt from the van before it even came to a complete stop. Everyone else made it inside and Jae could tell when he spotted Axelle because he broke out into a run. She turned to look and saw a girl with black hair and blue eyes smiling in their direction. That was all Jae had time to see because not long after said girl was being picked up into a bear hug in Die's arms and spun around in circles. They started walking towards the group, hands entwined and Die carrying her suitcase in his free hand. His face lit up as he introduced Axelle to Jae, who exchanged greetings before the happy couple made their way to the van, talking quietly to each other the entire way there.
Once everyone was settled back in the van, Axelle and Jae got to talking. Jae told her about her friendship with Kyo, her new relationship with Kaoru, and in turn Axelle told her about her relationship with Die and other various things. During their conversation they found they had a lot in common and were well on their way to becoming friends. Axelle giggled with she looked over and saw Die pouting.
"I better go take care of that!"
Jae laughed and nodded as she watched Axelle make her way over to Die, his mouth instantly breaking into one of his award-winning smiles. She turned to look at Kaoru to find him watching her with a smile. She smiled back and slid her hand into his, entwining their fingers, before bringing his hand up to her lips and placing a kiss on it. She rested her head on his shoulder and he laid his head on top of hers, both falling into a light sleep.
