Chapter nine: The Battles Ahead
Fuck, fuck, fuck, I am so fucking late Maddie walked out of her bedroom her eyes bloodshot with bags under them, she was paler and possibly skinnier than she was since the “incident”, that’s what she called the kiss that happened between Pete and her almost three weeks ago, the incident because calling it anything else would hurt too much, she had told Aly that she would pick her up no later then 8:30, right now it’s exactly 8:30. Shit, fuck! I told her I would take her to the zoo this morning. Trudging into the kitchen, her brown hair pulled into a messy ponytail, she smiled at her friends both sitting on the counter, one talking about the date she went on last night.
“He was sweet, kind and so adorable, he made all kinds of stupid jokes.” Trista looked like she was in heaven. “And he held my hand, uhh god I feel like such a girl.”
“That’s because you are a girl. I can’t believe you actually got up the nerve to call him. I mean Gabe obviously wanted you to call but it took you like a week and half to actually do it. So here’s the twenty million dollar question, did you kiss him?” Brylee was milking everything she could out of Trista, neither of the girls had noticed that Maddie had walked in. If they had they would have stopped the conversation, the two of them had been walking on egg shells around Maddie since the night two days after the kiss with Pete. That was the first time either of them had seen her cry since Tonya’s funeral, they found her in the living room; earlier that day she had seen Pete and Danielle both barely dressed walking out of Pete’s bedroom. It surprised not only them but also her how much it hurt, she had only known him for a little over three months and Maddie was never one to get attached to other adults that easily, children were another story.
“Yea, Trista did you kiss him?” It felt good to smile and laugh which she did at the look on her friends faces. “Stop looking at me like that!”
“It’s good to see you smile again, Madds.” Trista knew it was sore a subject so she answered the question that both of them had asked. “Yes, of course I kissed him. Man I would slept with him if he didn’t want take it slowly or whatever.” Maddie and Brylee both chuckled.
“You’re such a slut, Trist.” Brylee threw the comment out truthfully while Maddie laughed harder.
“I know, I really am. I just like sex, especially with a really hott, funny guy that likes me.” Trista smirked at the both of them.
“Well I hate to brake up this lovely conversation about Trista’s sex life but I promised a certain little girl that I would take her to the zoo this morning and then help her make dinner for her dad and Danielle tonight.” The sad smile that took over Maddie’s face was one that Brylee and Trista had seen so much in the last couple of weeks. They just nodded as she left for the day.

Maddie got out of her car she was officially an hour late and right now she didn’t really care but she was pretty sure that someone was going to be angry, whether it was Pete, Aly or Danielle, who had been around a lot more recently, she wasn’t quite sure. She had grabbed the two boxes of books she had promised Aly she would bring but holding them and opening the door was harder than she had expected it would be. Instead she threw the door open not really caring whether it hit someone until she heard a woman’s frustrated shriek. Maddie eyes went wide, the door she had just thrown open came flying back at her hitting her whole right side from her face to her hip making her drop the boxes she was holding and fall to the ground holding her face.
“Fucking bitch,” Maddie was pissed, she had woken up in a really good mood but she had been psyching her self up for a really good fight with the girl who had become her rival. Standing up she slammed the door shut and watched a smirk form over Danielle’s face but before she could actually punch her she heard Pete yelling as he walked down the stairs. Maddie’s whole body tensed at that moment
“What the hell is going on?”
“Baby, she almost hit me with door.” Maddie’s jaw dropped dramatically. You have to be kidding me! Maddie didn’t know what to say without showing her distaste for the women standing in front of her. Maddie just shook her head and leaned down to pick up the boxes she had dropped.
“I didn’t mean to almost hit her, I mean you, with the door so stop acting like a child,” Maddie started talking to Pete but ended the sentence looking at Danielle.
“I’m not being a child. You fucking threw the door open with a purpose.”
“The purpose was to get into the fucking house, ma’am. My hands were full so I pushed the door open with my elbow,” Maddie was getting angrier by the second especially with the way Pete stood there gapping like a goldfish.
“Maddie! You are so late!” Aly interrupted before anyone could go further into the fight. She was the image of cute in her jean skirt and red tank that says “my dad could beat your dad up any day” with her hands on her hips and her foot tapping. Maddie couldn’t help the smile that formed on her face. “Are we going today or did you wanna wait till next Monday?” Maddie stuck her tongue out at Aly in response, “Oh very mature Maddie, who between us is suppose to be the grown up. I gotta get my jacket be right back.”
“Maddie, Danielle and I were thinking that we might go to the zoo with you and Aly. I want her and Danielle to get to know each other better.” He watched as Maddie’s eyes went wide. He shouldn’t be doing this to her and he knows that, he was as much a part of that kiss as she was and it felt like he was punishing her for it.
“Well um why don’t you and Danielle take her and I’ll go run some errands. I know you have that um interview or whatever at three and I can be back in time for that.” Maddie was practically begging Pete to not make her do this. She could barely breathe around him, she was afraid to say anything because it could be construed differently then she meant it, and seeing him with Danielle, holding her hand, kissing her, watching him whisper in her ear made Maddie want to throw up. Pete locked eyes with her, he could see how much she needed to get out of this but he didn’t want her to get out of it. He knew that it was selfish but he wanted her there more than he wanted Danielle there. Before he could come up with an excuse for her to come Aly barged into the room.
“No Maddie, you have to go! You promised that you would take me, I don’t want Danielle to go, I want you to go.” She glared at her dad and his girlfriend. “She doesn’t know what animals we studied all week, they don’t know in which order we want to see the animals are and they definitely don’t know that you called in a favor with your friend so I could feed the dolphins! Maddie this was our trip, don’t let Daddy and Danielle take it away please!” Maddie felt horrible, she knew she couldn’t let Aly go alone but she also knew that having to spend a full day with Pete and his girlfriend while experiencing the feelings she has for him was pretty much going to kill her. All she could do was nod her head at Aly and smile.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
They had been at the zoo for two and a half hours, Aly and Maddie led the way while Pete and Danielle followed behind. At every section they talked about what they knew, Aly had decided last week she was going to be a veterinarian for wild animals and she wanted to know everything she could possibly know. At this point Maddie could hear Danielle start to complain.
“Uh, do we have to be here still? Seriously Pete, Aly hasn’t even talked to me because she’s been with the nanny the whole time. Can’t you like send her to get some food so I can talk to Aly? I mean she seems to be hogging your child; Aly has barely spoken a word to you either.” That was the last straw for Maddie, she was tired of Danielle using Aly to make Pete doubt Maddie and the way she tried to take care of Aly.
“Aly, look they have a monkey out. Why don’t you take your dad and go ask the women holding him any questions you might have about monkeys? Just don’t get to close, Aly look at me. Promise me you won’t get too close.” After Aly promised, she grabbed her dad’s hand and pulled him towards the monkey, Maddie turned towards Danielle.
“First of All, I have a name, whether you care or not I have a fucking name that I’m quite fond of, So instead of calling me “the nanny” why don’t try calling me Maddie.” Before Danielle could respond she continued, “Second of all, Aly isn’t talking to you because you’re a bitch. You are mean to her, you don’t care about her and you lie to her. Third of all, I am not Pete’s errand dog, I’m not going to go get you some food because you want some alone time. I could care less about you spending time with Aly,” She smiled as she saw Aly talk animatedly about the monkey to one of the employees and her dad out of the corner of her eye, “I love Aly, that’s the difference between me and you Danielle. I actually genuinely care for that little girl; where as you just want to get laid tonight or get your picture in a magazine tomorrow. I know you Danielle, I know your kind, you’re like a vulcher looking for easy pray. And I want you to know now that if you hurt that little girl in any way I will kill you.” Maddie had turned to walk away when Danielle finally spoke.
“Was that a threat, Maddie?” She said her name in such a condescending way, that Maddie could barely keep herself from hitting her.
“No, Danielle,” stating her name in the same way turning back around, Maddie walked closer so she was close enough for Danielle to feel her anger, “It wasn’t a threat, it was a promise; A promise that I’m more then willing to fulfill.” Maddie winked at Danielle and slowly made her way towards Aly. Brushing past Pete ignoring anything that he was about to say, “Hey baby girl you wanna go look at the reptiles?”
“Are there snakes? I wanna hold a snake you think they will let me?” Before Maddie could say anything Danielle chimed in.
“Aly, sweetie I don’t think it’s safe for you to hold a snake, some of them are poisonous. Right Pete?” Maddie knew what Danielle was doing; she was trying to fight back. She wanted to prove to Pete and Aly that she did care, that they were more then just her meal ticket.
“Well, if only some of them are poisonous then I’ll have to ask to hold one of the ones that aren’t won’t I, Danielle?” Aly glared at Danielle, who looked surprised by Aly words. Maddie knew that her plan wasn’t going to work; Danielle didn’t have a chance in hell of getting on Aly’s good side. Pete watched the interaction between the three girls and was almost positive he missed something important that had happened.
“Actually Aly now that I think about it we should head over to the Dolphins if you wanna get there in time to be Brandon’s helper, I mean only if you still want to, we could just go see the reptiles instead.”
“Uh no I can do that anytime right? I wanna feed the dolphins!! Puh-lease Maddie!” Pete couldn’t help the smile that came across his face and in that moment he stared at Maddie noticing how much she had changed in the last three weeks, she’s skinnier, paler, doesn’t smile as often, she’s really quiet, there’s even a bruise forming on her cheek and yet she still has this hold on me. I thought that I would get over it; I mean I have kissed other women before. That wasn’t just any kiss though, was it? He realized that someone was snapping there fingers in front of his face and talking to him.
“What? What did I miss?” Danielle wasn’t happy, she had seen the way he was looking at Maddie, it was the way he used to look at her.
“We’re going to the dolphins.” Danielle turned on her heel and went the same direction that Aly was dragging Maddie.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Maddie and Aly had been home for a couple of hours and were starting to make dinner for Aly to surprise her dad with. She made him promise to be home no later than seven and it was five thirty right now. Before Aly could decide what she wanted to make him the doorbell rang, she jumped down and headed for the door.
“No! Aly, stop.” Maddie said before she could get very far, “I’ll answer the door and you will continue to stir the brownies ok?” Brownies are what Aly had decided was going to be for dessert. Aly nodded solemnly, continued stirring while Maddie made her way to the door. For some reason she had a really bad feeling about this, her gut was telling her to ignore it but she knew that she couldn’t. Pulling it open she wasn’t sure who it was at first, then she saw the women’s eyes, the same electric green eyes that a certain little girl had. She pulled the door closer to her body so the woman couldn’t see in and no one could see out.
“Hi, can I help you?”
“Yea, my name’s Hannah.” Maddie faked a puzzled look, “Oh, you must be new.”
“Yea, I’m really new started like two days ago.” Maddie put some fake cheer into her voice, thank you mom for making me be a cheerleader. “I’m the maid,” at the unconvinced face Hannah made she continued, “Ya know I have to make an extra couple of bucks for school some way. So what can I do you for?”
“I need to talk to Pete; well actually I really need to talk to Aly, mine and Pete’s little girl.” Maddie tried not to throw up at the gentle almost motherly smile that came across the chicks face. “I miss her and I haven’t seen her in so long, is she here? I know she would love to see me.” Maddie could hear Aly making her way down the hallway and was afraid of what her response would be when she saw the women at the door.
“No ma’am, I’m afraid that neither of them are here. It’s just me cleaning the big mansion and of course the security guards” Maddie was hoping this orange skinned, fake blonde bimbo would get what she was hinting at. “I can leave Mr. Wentz a message if you would like.” As she was saying it she could see Aly peek out of one of the windows in the foyer, Maddie saw her eyes go wide, her body go tense and Maddie could feel the fear that radiated off of her. Before the sentence was finished, Aly had run passed where Maddie was standing at the door and up the stairs.
“I could just wait in the foyer for them to get home. It’s almost 6:00 they should be home soon right?” Hannah was pushing it with Maddie, Hannah could see that the woman in front of her is more important to Aly and Pete’s life then she was letting on. She also knew that this pale girl knew her past with Aly but that wasn’t going to stop her from trying to see one of them.
“Look Ma’am, I’m not going to let you in. I’m not sure if you even really know Pete or Aly for that matter. I’ll let them know you stopped by, but other than that I can’t help you. So I’m going to ask you nicely to leave.” Maddie was standing her ground; if she didn’t leave she would call security. Instead of fighting back Hannah nodded her head and walked back to her car.
“Hi, this is Maddie at the house; can you make sure the woman in the green sable actually leaves please?” She pressed the intercom to talk to the guy who was at the gate. He confirmed that he would and she silently made her way up the stairs.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Maddie knew where Aly was hiding, the one place where she felt safe. She pushed Pete’s bedroom door open all the way, walked in and took a deep breathe. I love the way he smells. She looked around; nothing had really changed since last time she was in here, except that. She had spotted a picture that was on his night stand. I remember this picture; Pete took it when we went on that picnic. It was of Maddie and Aly, Maddie was playing ring-around-the-rosy with her and they had both just fallen down. Aly was in Maddie lap and they were both laughing. I wonder why he has it in here. Hearing a slight whimper and a bit of crying come from the closet she turned her attention back to the problem at hand. She pulled the closet door open and almost laughed at the sight. Aly had tried to hide Hemingway with her in the cabinet which didn’t work. Hemingway was too big; his whole back end from the middle of his body to his butt was hanging out, his tail wagging slightly.
“Aly, sweet heart, It’s Maddie you wanna come out?” There was no response other than Hemingway trying to back out of the cabinet but only succeeded in hitting his head on the door. “Aly, she’s gone. I made her leave.”
“Is she coming back?” Aly had opened the cabinet door, allowing Hemingway to escape and peeked her head out.
“I don’t know baby girl. I can’t answer that, I’m going to tell your dad that she was here and you know he won’t let her…” Maddie stopped her sentence there, she was unsure of whether Aly knew that Maddie had been informed of her past.
“Hurt me? He won’t let her hurt me again right?”
The tears that Aly had just wiped away were replaced with new ones. Maddie pulled Aly out of the cabinet and onto her lap, holding her close and whispering in her ear,” Shh, it’s ok. She is not going to hurt you again, I promise” over and over again.
Maddie didn’t know what time it was or how long she had been rocking Aly, but she felt Aly sobs subside and could feel her breathing even out. Asleep, thank god. Looking at her watch it was ten till 7, repositioning Aly in her arms she stood up, holding on tightly to Aly, whose grip wouldn’t loosen in any way, she made her way downstairs and heard Aly mumble, “Maddie please don’t leave.”
“I’m not going anywhere sweet heart; I’m just trying to find your daddy.” Maddie was pacing in front of the door, the little six year old holding onto her neck with every ounce of strength she possessed. Seeing headlights pull up she sighed in relief, reached up to wipe the hair out of her eye, wincing at the pain from the door hitting her and she also noticed that she had cried her own tears for Aly and the pain she was feeling. Taking a deep breath she held on to Aly a little tighter wondering who was with Pete, she could hear several voices. They were laughing and joking with each other but the moment they laid eyes on Maddie with Aly in her arms all words were lost and confusion was present. Pete stepped forward, seeing how tired Maddie looked and went to take Aly from her; he wasn’t prepared for Aly to fight back.
“No.” Aly screamed loudly, she started whimpering slightly. “Please Maddie don’t let her take me.” Maddie saw the alarmed looks on the five boys in front of her.
“Aly, sweetie, It’s just your dad and your uncle’s ok?” Aly shook her head “no” frantically closed her eyes tighter and wrapped her arms more securely around Maddie’s neck. “Ok how about we go up to your room? Huh? I’ll take you up stairs and you can get some pajama’s on maybe climb into bed?” Waiting for her answer she looked at Pete begging him to say something to Aly.
“Aly baby, It’s daddy.” Maddie could feel Aly’s grip loosen a bit.
“Daddy?” She turned slightly in Maddie’s arms, looking at him she blinked a few times before putting her arms out for him to take her. “Daddy please don’t let her take me. I’ve been good just like I promised grandma and anybody who listened that I would be. I don’t want to go back.” Aly’s small body was shaking slightly in her dad’s tattooed arms and the tears that Maddie thought wouldn’t come back had. “Daddy, can I stay please?” Maddie willed Pete with her mind to say something.
“Aly, you’re not going anywhere; I’m not letting anybody take you. I promise you that.” As Pete said the sentence it was almost like that’s all Aly needed to hear, she had fallen asleep within a second after hearing them. Pete turned towards Maddie who was staring at Aly, tears crawling down her own cheeks. “I’m going to put her in bed but don’t go anywhere I need to know what’s going on.” As he turned and walked up the stairs, Maddie’s whole body involuntarily shook from what she wasn’t sure but she had never felt that much fear from a child before and it scared her.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
It had taken Pete almost twenty minutes to get Aly to sleep, he put her in his own bed and promised he would be up as soon as he got done talking to Maddie. Walking down the stairs, he saw her standing there in front of his four best friend but they were all silent. Not one had spoken.
“Maddie, Maddie look at me, what happened?” Pete was trying to stay calm but seeing Aly like that disturbed him. He was shaking and the longer Maddie stayed quiet the angrier he got. “Maddie! Tell me what happened.” He had grabbed her upper arms and shook her slightly to get her attention. It worked, she woke from her trance and started telling him what happened. She started with being in the kitchen, to answering the door and finding Hannah on the other side, to Aly peeking out the window and seeing her, to how hard it was to get rid of her, to finding Aly in the cabinet upstairs again, how scared she was, how she cried for almost an hour straight, to the walk down stairs.
“That’s when you got home,” Maddie voice shook uncontrollably. “I think she’s going to come back, Pete. She didn’t seem too happy about me threatening to get security. I didn’t know what else to do. Leaving Aly alone upstairs scared me, I didn’t know if she thought that I would abandon her or how scared she had to be.” Before Pete could respond they heard little footsteps running towards them, Aly was running down the stairs and on the bottom step she had launched her self into Maddie’s arms.
“Maddie, your not leaving right? You’re going to stay and make sure that she doesn’t come back and take me right?”
“You’re daddy won’t let anyone take you Aly, neither will your uncle’s,” Maddie smiled at the look on Aly’s face, “But if it’s that important to you then I’ll stay. I’ll sleep in the gold and red room, the one I stayed in while your dad was out of town.” At the satisfied grin on Aly’s face Maddie sighed. Handing her to her Uncle Gabe she told the boys she needed to make a phone call.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
It was way passed Maddie’s bed time and yet here she was downstairs in Pete’s kitchen eating ice cream. Maddie couldn’t sleep, everything that had happened today was still fresh in her mind, from the fight with Danielle to Pete kissing her on the cheek when he came into the room she was suppose to be asleep in to say goodnight.
“Ice cream huh? Of all the things you could eat at,” he paused and looked at the clock on the wall, “one in the morning and you choose ice cream.” Maddie laughed at his comment, and noticed that he wasn’t alone.
“So, Pete, Patrick and Gabe? What did you guys just randomly all wake up at once or did you wake each other up?” Pete smiled, seeing and hearing Maddie laugh cheered him up a bit. Still beautiful.
“Patty here was having some cravings and since we were sharing a room I heard him get up and decided to follow him.” Gabe informed her, “and we found Pete standing in Aly’s doorway staring at her. I figured if she woke up and saw his ugly mug she would be scared shitless, so we brought him along.” Pete paused while making himself a bowl of cereal to flip Gabe off, who just laughed in response. “So Maddie tell me how’s that dear friend of yours Trista?”
“So Gabe tell me why they hell don’t you just call her?” Maddie smirked as he lost his own smile. “She likes you, you might as well capitalize on it. I can tell you for a fact that she is awake right now, probably wondering why you didn’t call.” She smiled as he took his cell phone out of his pocket and headed towards the patio mumbling under his breath about a phone call he had to make. Looking around she noticed that she was alone with Pete, Patrick had also disappeared.
“Pretty decent bruise you got on that cheek.” Pete had grabbed her chin to take a better look, “You ok?”
“Am I ok about what? Getting hit in the face with a door on purpose or watching Aly bawl her eyes out over a woman that should be in prison?” Maddie couldn’t help the words that tumbled out. Pete sighed while trying to find a decent response but before he could she was talking again. “Or is this your round about way of asking me how I am since you kissed me.”
“Keep your voice down,” Maddie rolled her eyes at his response, “I thought we had some kind of secret agreement that we weren’t going to talk about that.”
“Secret agreement? What are 15 again? There was no such agreement only you and me avoiding what happened.” Maddie shook her head, “Pete you kissed me and trust me it’s not something I’m just going to forget but if you want to keep ignoring what you felt in that moment then fine, lets talk about Hannah.” Maddie was giving him an out but was hoping he wouldn’t take it.
“Hannah? What about her?” Maddie sighed, coward.
“Oh, I don’t know. Like what are you going to do when she comes back? Because you know she will and every time she does that’s the way Aly will respond. You need to take control of the situation, Aly can’t think for a second that Hannah is going to take her away from you again. You have to reassure her constantly, not just in words but also in you actions.” Maddie watched as he washed his bowl, nodding his head along to the words she was saying. He dried his hands off and turned to look at her, willing himself to say something.
“Yea, I get it. Trust me Maddie, Aly isn’t going any where, I on the other hand should go back to bed.” He bid her goodnight and was halfway down out of the kitchen before he turned back towards her. “Look, I felt it. That kiss has changed my life, in a way that I’m still trying to figure out. Just ya know let me, let me figure it out before you push me to make some kind of decision.” He didn’t let her respond, he just smiled and continued to make his way up the stairs not glancing back. Maddie smiled at his back, cleaned her own bowl then proceeded to make her way to the room she was sleeping in. Neither had seen the brunette that was sitting in the living room listening to every word that had passed between them.
