A/N: Okay, so now that my APO one act is finished, I can have more time to finishing up Summerset, right? Wrong! Well, at least not until after exams (next week). Check out the one act in the originals section for a good farce to keep you satisfied in Row writing until I'm able to squeeze another update out. And just in case the last part of this chapter sounds absurd/nonsense/stupid, forgive me, I quite literally fell asleep several times while finishing it up. The update would have come sooner, but my computer went emo and killed itself today. :( But enough author drivel, here's the chapter. Enjoy and review me to show me how much you love me! :P

Cara awoke to a tickling sensation on her nose. Her eyelids fluttered open and she came face to face with her mom’s oversized cat that seemed it would never die. “Hey Miss Kitty.” Cara moved and reached out to pet the cat, stretching as she did so, hating the familiar stiffness that came with sleeping on a couch. It took her a moment to remember why exactly she was sleeping on the couch at her old home, then she felt a bit of a blush crossing her face.
“Good, you’re awake. Now, why don’t you come help me make something for breakfast? Daddy left for work hours ago, but school was cancelled today because of snow. Can you believe it, Cara? Snow! And it’s only December! How amazing is that?” Janie giggled as she walked back towards the kitchen, fully intent on teasing the shit out of her sister for last night.
Cara groaned at Janie’s chatter, wondering how anyone in their right mind could possibly be that awake in the morning. She stretched and ran a hand through her hair before walking to the bathroom, frowning at her reflection in the mirror. She looked like she had been through hell and back. Her hair was all in disarray, and the makeup that she had so carefully applied yesterday before the funeral had either ran down her face, or completely disappeared. In total, she looked horrid.
She quickly washed her face and finished her morning routine before walking back to the kitchen, where Janie was busy making pancakes. The smell caused her stomach to growl, letting her know just how long it had been since she had last had something to eat. “Mm, smells great Janie. I don’t remember the last time I ate, so this was a great idea.”
Janie grinned wickedly at Cara’s comments. “Yeah, and I’m sure the acrobatics with Ray last night just made the problem even worse, huh?” Janie turned to Cara with a smirk, loving the blush that covered her sister’s face. Yep, even if she hadn’t heard practically everything from the living room last night, the blush proved it.
Cara’s embarrassment was almost monumental. First she had out of the blue had an almost marathon sex fest with her best friend from high school, and now she had to deal with the fact that her younger sister had heard it, and was now in payback mode. “Janie, please don’t tell Clyde. You know for a fact how crazy he would get over that. Besides, it looked rather scandalous last night with Taylor here alone.”
Janie gasped and wanted to toss the spatula at Cara for suggesting that she had done something with Taylor. “Oh no you don’t, Cara. You are not going to turn this conversation around on me and Taylor. Besides, we haven’t done anything beyond some serious make-out sessions. You on the other hand, have at least had Ray, and probably at least one of your roommates. Am I right?” Janie laughed triumphantly at the blush on her sister’s face. “You have had one of your roomies! I knew it! So which one was it? From what I remember they all were hot, and probably pretty well down there too.”
“Janet Elizabeth Morgan! Where did you learn that sort of language?” Cara was shocked that her baby sister was talking in such an adult way. It was a bit of culture shock in a way. But then Janie just laughed shaking her head.
“Cara, I’m in high school, remember? I graduate next year. I’m not a little kid anymore, you know. You still treat me like an elementary school kid. Well, guess what, Cara? I’m not! God, and I thought you would be a little more helpful and adult with me. I already get patronized enough from Daddy.” Janie angrily flipped the pancake she had been working on out of the pan, turning on Cara, holding the spatula like a deadly weapon.
Cara flinched at Janie’s anger. She hadn’t remembered her sister to be so violently angry before, and it was a bit of an eye-opener, obviously. But then again, it was a bit of a realization to have come back to her sister being as ... adult as she was. It made Cara feel bad that she hadn’t been around to see the change in her sister. But then again, she had known that she would have to get away from everything to recover from the grief of her mother and brother’s deaths.
“I’m sorry Janie. You just have to realize, I remember you as the little innocent girl that I left last. The one who would giggle madly at any mention of guys, and didn’t know anything about the more adult aspects of life. It’s going to take a bit of getting adjusted to, okay?” Cara took a step towards Janie, but frowned when she heard her cell phone ring from her purse, which was still sitting on the counter.
When Cara pulled her phone out and saw the ID, she just frowned before putting it back in her purse. Janie noticed this and raised an eyebrow. Who was Cara ignoring? “Oh, Cara, your phone has been ringing all morning. Some Frank guy, from what the ID says. You also had the Gerard one call a time or two. Your roommates?”
Cara nodded in response to Janie’s question. “Yeah, those are the two guys I live with. Gee’s brother was the other roommate, but he died this week. You remember Mikey, right?” Cara knew that Mikey had been over to her house a few times when she had come home for break from college, and so Janie would likely remember him.
“Oh yeah, he was cute too. Shame about that. So what’s the deal with the roommates? Something obviously happened or you wouldn’t be here. The fact that they’re calling nonstop is another sign. Is everything okay, Cara?” Janie turned off the stove as she finished with the last of the pancakes and moved to stand next to her sister. It was obvious that something was wrong with Cara, just by the way she was acting.
Cara shrugged, not knowing for certain if everything was okay. In fact, she didn’t know a lot of things right now. She felt on the edge of tears, and wasn’t exactly sure why. Probably because she had always wanted to feel in control of her life after she had moved out of the house, and now that things were out of control, she felt like her life was breaking apart. Cara felt arms wrap around her waist and jumped.
“Cara, don’t worry. Everything will settle itself out soon enough. And until it does, you can stay here with us. It will be great having another girl in the house to overrule Daddy. He seems to have reverted back to the dark ages since Mama and Jake. But come on and let’s eat these pancakes before they get cold. Once they’re cold, they’re useless.”
Cara laughed and let Janie pull her off towards the dining room table, sitting down and smothering her pancakes in syrup before quickly eating the entire plate. After finishing the pancakes she tossed the paper plate into the trash can and stretched again, feeling more alive now that she had had food and caffeine.
“I think I’m going to go grab a shower and get cleaned up some. Then why don’t we go shopping? You can even get Taylor to come along, if you two didn’t have anything planned.” Cara smiled as Janie’s face lit up at the suggestion. It made her feel good to know that she had made her sister smile with the suggestion of a day out together again like they used to do.
“That sounds great! But if I bring Taylor along, you have to bring Ray along as well. Don’t try to argue, Cara. Besides, Taylor would probably feel weird going shopping with two girls without having another guy to keep him company. They could go look at video games or comic books or whatever it is guys do.”
Cara laughed, although at the mention of comic books, she flinched slightly. Gerard was a comic book junkie. Just the smallest thought of one of her roommates, caused her to automatically feel bad. She missed them, of course, but right now she just didn’t think she could handle being around them. But for her sister’s sake, she would push all that aside and just have a good time.
“Okay, I guess I’m overruled. How about you make the calls to invite the two guys while I go grab a shower? I feel horribly in need of one this morning.” Cara headed off towards the bathroom, ignoring the teasing laughter of her sister, no doubt having some remark to make about her nighttime activities.

Cara walked back into the living room, now feeling much more alive and human after having had a shower. She smiled seeing that Taylor had already showed up at the house, no doubt to spend a little more time with Janie, since they were free from school for the day. She merely waved to the young couple before instantly heading to the refrigerator to get something to drink. It was a nasty habit of hers, but she seemed to always need to have something to drink. And not just alcoholic drink, just something to keep fluids in her at all times. Call it a freakish health thing, but that was just how she was. She walked back into the living room and settled herself in the oversized recliner that was probably where Clyde sat most of the time, but he wasn’t here, so she was claiming it.
“Good morning, Taylor. I hope you weren’t up too late on the phone with Janie.” Cara laughed at the blush on the younger boy’s face before shaking her head. “Don’t worry, I’m not telling Clyde. At least be glad it doesn’t charge for nights.” Cara knew that Clyde more than likely didn’t know about Janie’s phone habits, particularly the ones where she stays up most of the night on her cell phone talking to her boyfriend. Because if Clyde knew, then it would be a bad day in the house for Janie.
“Oh it doesn’t charge anytime, he’s on my preferred list. Daddy, Uncle Vernon, you, Taylor, and Ray. Speaking of which, I wonder where he is? He said that he would be right over when I called him, and I called him before I called Taylor.” Janie hopped up and looked out the window impatiently before flopping back down on the couch beside Taylor.
“Relax, J. Besides, I think you’re forgetting that I live two blocks down, while Ray lives all the way on the other side of town. Not to mention it is snowing.” Taylor took Janie’s hand with a smirk, showing that he was only teasing. It was a cute gesture, even Cara had to admit. From the little bit of time she had spent with him, Cara was really starting to like Taylor. Maybe Janie had grown up a bit since the last time Cara had met one of her boyfriends. One could only hope at least.
“Oh shut up, Taylor York! I never said I was rational, now did I? Of course not. Besides, rational people are no fun anyways. And I, most definitely, am fun.” Janie pouted dramatically and crossed her arms over her chest, turning away from Taylor, who didn’t look the least bit ashamed. Yep, this was the same younger sibling that Cara had remembered from the last time she had been at home.
Both Taylor and Cara burst out laughing at Janie’s dramatics. This earned a slap to Taylor and a glare towards Cara. But before Janie could retaliate any further, there was the sound of a car door shutting and Janie hopped up and rushed off towards the door with a squeal, leaving Taylor and Cara laughing at her antics again. Oh yes, things were certainly entertaining around her family.
“Ray-Ray! I’m so glad you’re finally here! Cara and Taylor have been ganging up on me all morning. So now I can finally have an ally against these two meanies.” Janie came back into the living room followed by Ray and gave Cara a mock glare. “Cara is the worst of the two, Ray-Ray. I think you should definitely do something to fix that. After all, it is sort of your responsibility now, isn’t it?”
Cara blushed a bright red at Janie’s comments, meriting a fit of giggles from Taylor and smirk from Janie. Oh, that little sneak was going to get it now. “Well, if that’s what the rules are, then I guess I should ask Taylor to do something about your incessant teasing and chatter, shouldn’t I?” Cara grinned as Taylor stopped laughing at the glare from Janie, and had to cover her mouth to keep from laughing herself. Even Ray seemed to get a chuckle out of her comeback, although he was at least smart enough to keep it quiet or face the wrath of Janie.
“Well, ladies, why don’t we head off on our day out? I drove just because my truck will be better in snow than your little cars. So I have an extra seat.” Ray seemed ready to leave the house and get out by themselves, perhaps for fear of the wrath of Clyde at his daughters spending the day with two guys rather than in more ‘worthwhile’ ventures.
Taylor nodded at Ray’s mention of the vehicle difficulties in the snow. “Yeah, I have Dad’s Jeep. So I have space too. J, sweetie, your little car couldn’t make it to the grocery and back in this snow. Trust me.” Taylor smirked at the fake glare from Janie at his comments about her car. Of course, Cara couldn’t disagree with Taylor, Janie’s little car probably couldn’t make it any farther than the road before she was in a ditch.
Janie grinned at the opportunity before looping her arm around Taylor’s as they all stood, heading for the door. “Great. So I’ll ride with Taylor and Cara can ride with Ray. So come on and let’s go before everything gets so crowded that there’s really no point in going shopping at all. I hope there’s not the horrible Christmas music blaring over the loud speakers again. Surely they could get some better Christmas music if they’re going to be blasting it all day and night.” Janie turned back to the other three, as she had already started heading towards the door, fully intent on getting out as quickly as possible. When she turned back and saw them all merely shaking their heads at her with grins on their faces, she frowned. “Oh, just shut up and come on.”
Cara laughed as Janie spun back around and waltzed out to Taylor’s car. She turned to Taylor with a grin. “I think you should head out too. At least to keep her from going completely mental out there. But then again, this is Janie that we’re talking about. She’s already past mental.” Cara grinned before going to grab her own coat from where it was still hanging on the back of one of the dining room chairs. She jumped at the feeling of hands helping her into her coat, and spun around, only to reveal a smirking Ray. “You know, you could have very easily gotten hurt quite badly.
Ray smirked before leaning over to whisper in her ear. “Hurt me then, Cara. I’m all yours. I’m here until I have to go on rounds at ten tonight. But until rounds, I’m yours for the claiming.” The fact that his voice was so close to her ear that she could feel his breath on her skin was doing nothing for her calm. In fact, quite the opposite. She could feel herself heating up to his close proximity, and she hated the fact that it was driving her mad.
“I think we should head out to the truck before the two young ones come inside to see what’s keeping up, only to find us in whatever assortment of choreography we might be in at that moment. So for now it seems that we’ll be going to the city just to get away from it for a while.” Cara reached out and grabbed Ray’s hand to pull him out towards his truck so they could leave on their special shopping outing. At least that’s what the girls thought it to be. The boys, however, had completely different motives.
