Chloe exited the elevator with Bill, Ryan, Ray, and Nia. Spencer and Ryan had needed some medical attention and Naida needed a little help, so Brendon and Alex had stayed to help her with them before they all tried to convince her to go up with them. It had seemed like a harder job than looking to see what the deal upstairs was.
Chaos was the only word that came to Chloe’s mind as they stepped from the elevator.Everyone was yelling, and there were a lot of people there to yell. With just a glance, Chloe knew that there were well over a hundred people crammed into the large lobby of Bryar Enterprises, and only a fourth of them were meant to be there. Someone was going to have to restore order and somehow, she knew she was that person.
She used a chair to get onto the large reception desk and whistled loud enough that everyone grew silent and looked at her. “Now that I have your attention, does someone mind telling me what you guys are doing here?” Everyone started to speak at once and she whistled again. “I only need one person to talk. Please.”
The crowd separated and an older gentleman stepped from the crowd followed by a dark haired, yet little woman, and a man who looked a lot like the elder man. “We are all that is left of those that lived in Contract Valley, Chloe Bryar. We heard that there were others here, so we gathered all we could and came to seek help.”
Chloe smiled, realizing in that moment who the man was. “Mr. Urie, you all are more than welcome, but you should have given us a little notice so that we could find places for everyone.”
“We were not thinking, Chloe. I am sorry.”
“That’s alright, Mr. Urie, everyone. Bill, can we start finding places for all the people?” Chloe turned to look at Bill, wanting to help as much as she could.
“I’m on it, Chloe.” Bill winked at her, knowing what she was thinking and headed to the small office behind the reception desk, no doubt to see if there were places for everyone.
Chloe turned back to the group as the elevator door opened. Spencer stepped out first, his arms protectively around a fearful looking Naida. Ryan and Alex stepped out next, talking in low voice about something. Brendon came out last, shaking his head with a small smile on his face, obviously about whatever Alex and Ryan were talking about.
It didn’t take them long to notice there were a lot of people in the room, but Chloe’s eyes were only for Brendon and his reaction to his family standing in front of him. When he did notice, his eyes welled with tears and he ran to them, throwing his arms around both him mother and father. “I thought you two were dead!”
“Brendon, baby! I saw you get buried under the building when they took it. How is this possible?” His mother pulled back and kissed him hard as she spoke, tears flowing freely down her soft faerie face.
“I’m fey, Mom. I can’t into my last fey power just as the building fell. I shrunk.” He shrugged it off like it was normal for a twenty year old man to just turn into a four inch tall flying creature. “It saved my life, but by the time I got out of the wreckage, there was nothing but blood on the ground. I thought you were all dead.”
“We’re very much alive, son. All of us.” His father moved and shoved both Brendon’s older brother, Samuel, and his twin sister, Brianna. “Your mother and I ran to get you and watched your building collapse. Samuel barely made it back to the coffee shop to get her before they took that. We were a little scratched up, but otherwise unharmed.”
Brendon caught Brianna as she threw herself crying into his arms and smoothed her dark hair, speaking in soothing tones. Somehow, he had known that Brianna was still alive, but as for the others, he was unsure. “It’s alright, Bri, we’re together again.”
“I knew you weren’t dead, Brendon. I just thought that I had lost you. I’m so happy to have you back though.” She gave him a squeeze and he made a noise, causing her to pull back a little. “Did I hurt you?”
“A little. Alex and I ran into some trouble on the way up here the other day. I still haven’t healed all of the damage.”
“You and Alex?” His father had a commanding voice that demanded attention, and Chloe knew what that tone said. They all knew, and everyone in the room from Contract Valley grew tense.
Nia and Ray moved onto either side of Alex, protective. Everyone had known about Alex and his sexual preference. They also knew that him and Brendon were really, really close. The Uries were not the most tolerant of people when it came to homosexuals or other worlders who weren’t faerie. The room was about to be divided into sides, and Chloe knew which side she was going to be on.
“Easy now, Mr. Urie. We don’t want a fight here.”
“Fight? There’s going to be no fight if Brendon only tells me what he was doing with Alex when I specifically forbade him from seeing your young cousin, Chloe.”
Brendon moved back from his father, closer to Alex and his group. “Alex is …” He stopped for a moment and looked back at Alex, who gave him an encouraging smile. He turned back to his father, determined look on his face. “I love him, Dad. He’s my boyfriend.”
Anger flashed across both of Brendon’s parents faces. It was reflected in his brother’s face, but Brianna’s face was, surprisingly, understanding, and she moved carefully to stand near her twin brother.
“Your boyfriend, Brendon? Are you gay, son?” The anger in his father’s voice was think enough to walk on.
“Yes, Father, I am.” Brendon moved back another few steps and Alex stepped forward to take the offered hand. “I have been for a very long time, Father, Mother.”
Chloe felt something in the air shift and moved to get between Brendon, Alex, and the Urie family, but it was too late. Samuel flew into Alex and sent him flying hard into the back wall, cracking the plaster. Mother Urie grabbed Brendon around the throat and held him aloof. “I did not raise my faerie son to grow up and be gay. You are a faerie with an ae, not a fairy with an ai!”
Chloe felt the anger welling inside her at the sight of Alex bleeding against the wall and ran, with lightening speed, ripped Samuel off him and sent him into the crowd. He came back at her with a speed that came close to matching her own and shoved her through the elevator doors. She felt her fangs come out and she bit him, hard, drinking every ounce of faerie blood from his veins.
She dropped his lifeless body onto the ground and stepped out of the elevator, looking into the crowd of people who stared at her with awe. Brendon had been dropped onto the floor some time before. He was being held by Brianna and Alex, both of whom were bleeding. Mother Urie was unconscious in a corner and Father Urie looked like he was about to kill both Chloe and Brianna simultaneously with a gaze.
“You come to my home to ask for help and then attack my cousin and my best friend? How dare you! Your son’s death is only the beginning if you think that you can get away with such blatant violence in this building.” Chloe, covered from mouth to navel in Samuel’s blood, stalked toward Father Urie. “Are you willing to die today for something as stupid as Brendon being gay?”
“I will not find a place for a gay basher to stay, Chloe.” Bill’s voice drew Chloe’s gaze to where he knelt beside Brendon. Anger was evident on his face, and Chloe knew why.
She turned back to Father Urie with a pleased smile. “See, Mr. Urie, you’ve already lost your safe passage here. Bill is in charge of rooming and he is, adamantly, homosexual. Get out of my building!”
Mother and Father Urie glared at her but began to move toward the door. They stopped at the door and turned around, holding their hand out to Brianna. “Come, Brianna, we are being kicked out.”
“You have been kicked out, Dad. I have not.” Brianna did not moved from her twin brother’s side. “I don’t care if Brendon is gay. Actually, I’m glad of it. He’s happier with Alex. I can tell that already. Can’t you be happy for him?”
“No, and may you be cursed for believing such nonsense.” Her mother grabbed her husband’s hand and pulled him out the door, thinking she had the last word in the whole thing.
“Bitch!” Brianna yelled just as the door closed and it was evident from the pause in Mother Urie’s step that she had heard and it had hurt. That was what Brianna had meant to do, and the smile on Brendon’s face made it all worth it.
“Now that they’re gone, there are buses waiting for all the others downstairs. They will take you to apartments that will serve as your living quarters until you find better. If you will follow me.” Bill took the incentive of the silence to heard everyone else out, leaving only Chloe and her small group of close friends.
She sighed and walked over to Brendon and Alex to check on their wounds. Naida seemed frozen in a back corner, the shock of being out in public in what must have been years keeping her from moving. Spencer was with her, trying to console her, and Chloe was okay with it because she was comfortable in her own skin right now.
She knelt beside Brendon and went to reach for him when the distinct sound of a gun being cocked was heard behind her. A soft, yet clear and dangerous, voice was heard behind her. “Step away from him, or I’ll blow your fucking head off, vampire.”
