“H’llo?” Hayley mumbled somewhere in the direction of the mouthpiece of her cell phone. She swallowed the thick feeling in her tongue.
“Hello?”
“You didn’t call to say goodnight.” Mige, sounding hurt and accusing.
“Didn’t I?” she sat up, rubbing her head. Strewn around her on the bed were her school books, various papers in different states of being done.
“I swear I did.”
“You didn’t. I’ve been waiting for hours. It’s eleven thirty. You always call me by ten.” Mige was pouting.
“That’s hardly hours, hon.” Hayley chuckled. She yawned and stretched. “I didn’t mean to not call you, sweetie. I’m just really tired.”
“I know. You’re always so busy. I feel like you barely have time for me.” Now he was really sulking. Hayley sighed and rubbed her hand down her face.
“Mige, I’m with you all the time. On the weekends, during lunch. I talk to you on the phone every night. What do you mean I don’t have time for you?”
“I just… I don’t know.” Mige sighed. Hayley said nothing.
“I love you, all right?”
“I love you, too.” His voice was longing. Hayley lay back on the bed, the phone snugly against her ear.
“Want me to sing to you?” she offered. It was a rare treat. Hayley did not like to sing to anyone, for any reason. But, for some reason, her boyfriend loved it when she sang to him.
“Yes,” he still sounded mopey. She smiled.
“What do you want to hear?”
“Everywhere?”
“Turn it inside out so I can see, the part of you that’s drifting over me. And when I wake you’re never there. And when I sleep, you’re everything. You’re everywhere. Just tell me how I got this far. Just tell me why you’re here and who you are.” Hayley began to softly sing.
“‘Cause every time I look, you’re never there. And every time I sleep, you’re always there. ‘Cause you’re everywhere to me. And when I close my eyes, it’s you I see. You’re everything I know that makes me believe, I’m not alone. I’m not alone.” There was already slow, steady breathing on the other line. It never failed to put him to sleep.
Hayley softly pressed the end button on her phone and set it aside.
“Now I’ve just got to tackle this homework.” She groaned at the pile of work. Everything really was starting to get to be too much for her. She picked up her pencil and began to work on her geometry.
**
Ville showed up at his lunch table the next day, too. Rake and Hayley were sitting together, and so the only empty space was next to the Finnish boy.
Bam shifted his weight from one foot to the other. He didn’t know what to do here. Should he ask someone to move? Maybe that Hayley girl?
But no, they were talking, she and Rake. Whispering about something that looked like it might be important by the way Rake kept pushing his hair out of his face. He only did that when anxious about something.
And so Bam set down his tray and sank in next to the Finn. He received a shy sort of smile. Though he tried to focus on his lunch, he could feel green eyes scanning him for some reason.
Ville was, of course, searching for that chrome chain. He saw it there, just above the collar of the t-shirt. He didn’t quite understand why he felt more secure when he saw it, or why he felt a certain warm ball growing in the pit of his stomach.
“Hey,” Bam mumbled into his hot dog.
“Hello,” Ville swallowed. There was something about the younger boy’s lips wrapped around the long treat that made him squirm a little bit on the seat.
“How’s your day?”
“Pretty good.” Ville answered. He’d brought his own lunch and munched on a bag of Doritos. Without thinking, he offered the bag to the hockey player. Bam reached in, took a chip, but his eyes were glued to Ville’s long orange ones.
“That’s good.”
“Mmm,” Ville had begun to suck the Dorito dust from those fingers thoughtfully. Bam coughed, getting that rolling feeling in his belly again.
“I guess it is good, isn’t it? How was your day?”
“A-all right.” Bam stammered. He pretended he didn’t see the way that Hayley was watching him.
No one could ignore Mige though. He came in and saw Rake and his girlfriend, close together and huffed out his breath.
“You couldn’t even save me a seat?”
“You said you had to do something in the band room. I didn’t know how late you were going to be, Mige. Rake and I are doing homework.” They even had the papers spread out in front of them this time. Proof. Mige just rolled his eyes as he pushed Dunn over and squeezed in.
Dunn didn’t seem to notice.
“You could have tried.” Mige pouted.
“I’m not going to discuss this with you.” She announced. She stood up, her tray empty. “You were late. I’m doing homework so I have more time to talk to you tonight. If you can’t stop complaining than I don’t know what you want.” She stalked off to get
rid of her trash.
“I didn’t know you two were having a fight.” Ville turned to Mige who sighed.
“We weren’t,” Mige said sullenly. “Until now.”
“You’re in trouble. She’s way pissed.” Ville shook his head. Bam looked over the other boy’s shoulder at the girl putting her tray on the counter.
“How can you tell?”
“The way she’s holding her back, all stiff and straight. She’ll have her lips pursed in a tight line when she gets back too. We’re going to be lucky if she says three words. Hayley’s real big on silent treatment.” Ville’s lips were close to Bam’s cheek. He could feel the warm breath on his skin.
Now was not the time to swoon, he told himself.
