“Where are we going?” she demanded once again. Ville fussed with the ties in the back, adjusted the halter tie a little and smiled at her.
“I don’t know.”
“You do too.” She sighed. She knew it was pointless. She wasn’t going to tell her. Ville brushed her hair out for her and pinned a sparkly fake flower behind her ear. He kissed her softly.
“You look wonderful.”
“Thank you,” she smiled at him. He liked the way he could almost taste how much she loved him. He slipped sliver earrings into her ears, a chain around her neck. Gingerly, she stepped into the shoes.
“Oh, darling. You’re simply beautiful.”
“No, you are.” She said earnestly as she looked at him. “You’re the most beautiful person that I’ve ever seen, and I think I would die without you.”
“Lovely Helena,” he took both her hands. “I have to get dressed. But I did get you a present.”
He presented her with a small wrapped package and went into the bathroom. Helena sat on the bed to rip off the paper. The lovely man had tied it with a real silk ribbon, and she tucked that away in her nightstand.
Underneath the paper there was a small velvet box. She opened in and gasped. There was a lovely locket inside, heavy silver. She could tell that it was antique. She slowly opened it.
Inside there were two pictures. One side was Bam, and the other was Ville. Quite possibly, it was one of the most beautiful things she’d ever been given. Lenny held it in her palm, staring at it as she waited.
“Don’t you like it?” Ville was frowning when he came out. Lenny’s breath caught in her throat when she saw him. He was wearing tuxedo. He fussed with his tie for a few seconds as he watched her.
“I love it. I love you.” She carefully stood on tiptoe to give him a kiss, not wanting to get her sparklies all over his suit.
“I know you’d like to wear it tonight, but it won’t match your dress. I don’t think Bam would be very happy at me.”
“Okay,” she put it back in the box and set it aside. Ville produced a silvery wrap and put it around her shoulders.
“Let’s go, sweetheart.” They held hands as they walked down the stairs. Outside there was a limo, of all things. Lenny’s eyes were wide and bright.
“Where are we going? You have to tell me. Where?”
“Patience,” he chided her. They sat in the limousine, Lenny marveling at everything, making charming little observations that made Ville smile.
“Do all the windows roll down, or just the ones here? Look, look, I love the moon roof! Isn’t it amazing to think of all the things that might have happened in here? People going to weddings, and proms…” she went on and on and on.
After driving around for about an hour, they arrived at a banquet hall. Lenny looked at Ville, confused.
“What are we doing here?”
“You’ll see,” Ville soothed her again. He walked with her inside.
They entered a hall, and Lenny’s eyes opened wide. There was a DJ in one corner, and a dance floor crowded with people in pretty dresses and tuxes. There were balloons and streamers, tables with purses on them.
“What IS all this?” her voice was a gentle, wondering whisper.
“Lenny!” and there he was. The one person she’d wanted to see all day long. He was wearing a tuxedo as well.
“There you are. I’ve been waiting.”
“What IS this?” she asked again. Ville was taking her wrap as Bam drew her out onto the dance floor.
“Your birthday present.”
“It’s a lovely party,” she sighed as they made their way into the middle of the crowd. Bam shook his head.
“It’s not a party. It’s your prom.”
“Prom?” she repeated dumbly.
“Holden said that the worst day of your life was prom. He told me all about how your date was an ass, and how’d you gone out and bought a pretty dress and everything. So I wanted to give you a good prom.” Helena didn’t speak. She looked at her boyfriend, a strange expression on her face.
“You think it’s stupid.” Bam turned red. “God, I’m sorry. I just thought that---.”
“Hush,” she stopped him with a finger pressed to his lips. “Bam, this is the nicest thing that anyone has ever, ever done for me. I can’t even tell you how happy it makes me.”
“Oh,” he was relieved. It struck him then how young and beautiful she looked, twenty years old in that princess dress. He took her hands.
“Let’s dance.”
**
They danced and laughed all night. She took her shoes off like every girl does and danced barefoot. When Holden appeared, her shout of joy made everyone stop and smile. He swept her up in an embraces and was graciously introduced to Ville Valo.
The two hit it off and spent much of the night sitting at one of the tables, exchanging stories. Holden was working at film school, Lenny thought as she watched them. She was so proud of him.
Of course, her best friend took time off the conversation to dance with her, spinning and twirling to the music.
Lenny didn’t think anything in her life could be better. Towards the end of the evening, April walked over to her with a silver and rhinestone tiara. She placed it on Lenny’s head.
“You’re the queen,” she announced, kissing the girl on the cheek.
Shortly there after, everyone hugged and kissed her goodnight, wished her a happy birthday. Bam led her to the limo, along with Ville and Holden. Her heart kept thudding in her chest. She could barely believe that this wasn’t a dream.
When they arrived at the castle, Bam said that she should stay with Holden. He was leaving in the morning. Ville would be around for about a week. She kissed her boys goodnight and skipped off with her best friend.
“You really love her, don’t you?” Ville asked as the two of them settled down for the night, tangled up in one another.
“Yeah,” Bam muttered as he pressed his face in Ville’s neck. “I love her a whole lot.”
“Then you ought to keep her.”
