“Light, ooowww, oww light, pain.” Dom covered his eyes from the blinding light that was suddenly flooding his brain.
“More like pain in the ass. Get up look at this place.” Jai grinned down at the group on the floor and finished opening the blinds.
“Morning Jai, could you please turn off the sun it’s trying to kill me.” By this time, the others were awake, well moving anyway. He blinked and looked blearily around. Orli was still sprawled on the couch, and there was quite the Hobbit pile on the floor. Though they were still missing one blue-eyed Baggins. “Let me guess. Never got around to coming out last night?”
“No we did. You people were all passed out so we found better things to do. I’ll make coffee.”
“Bless you. You are a God among men.” He tried to sit up and was failing miserably. There was whimpering coming from Billy’s end of the pile. Sean who had managed to do what no other hobbit had done was standing.
“Should we wake him?”
“Who Billy? Not a chance. Don’t worry the smell of coffee will bring him around. If not we can throw toast at him from the doorway. That usually works in a pinch.
The boys were sitting down to enjoy . . . well ok belt down their breakfast. Minus a snoring Scotsman and an exhausted Elijah. “What did you do to the boy Jai? He never sleeps through coffee brewing.” At Jai’s patented grin, he changed his mind, “Never mind. Too early. That would scar me for life.” Just then, the door opened and Billy stumbled in zeroing in on the coffee pot like a moth to a flame. He prefered tea the rest of the day but coffee started him out in the mornings. His hair was standing on end and he had a pattern embedded on his cheek, which could only have come from Sean’s denim pant leg. He looked groggy but otherwise ok. Bloody bastard never got a hangover.
“Why didn’t anyone wake me up?” They all gave him the ‘you’ve got to be kidding me’ look.
“And risk being a eunich for the rest of my life. I think not.”
“Ah Orli, your really a girl anyway. Sorry no caffeine yet.” He took a big gulp out of the cup in his hand and looked at Orlando again, “Nope still a girl.”
“So what’s this surprise that you have planned for Lij? Or does that fall under the ‘What did you do to him’ category that we still don’t want to hear about?” Billy looked confused at Dom’s comment but looked to Jai expectantly.
“Yeah what were you driving me insane about for 3000 miles?”
“You will just have to wait I’m not telling you before him.”
“Just for that. I have to tell you that you and ‘Lij each owe Sean twenty bucks.” Just as Billy said that the blue eyed wonder stepped into the room.
“Damn”
“Don’t tell me you voted boy Lij. Why?”
“Don’t look at me you were the one singing ‘Memories’ in the shower the other day.” Dom rolled his eyes.
“Would it help if I discovered my inner Eminem for my morning ablutions? And before you say anything else I look hot in eyeliner so stuff it.” No one could argue with that so they went back to their coffee.
About an hour later after bribing the others to get showers first Dom and Billy set out. “If you get a chance how about actually bringing home some food this time Dom.”
“Hey! Would you rather I had brought home Ramen Noodles or Jai? Thought so, shut up.”
The drive was mostly quiet. “Do you want me to go in Dom?”
“No, I think I should do this by myself. I’ll tell you everything I promise.”
“I have some calls to make anyway. I should probably tell my sister I’m alive.
“Not funny Bill.”
“Sorry, she didn’t know I was on a plane much less which one she has no idea what happened.”
“Are you going to tell her?” Dom looked at Billy from the corner of his eye while trying to concentrate on the road. Dodging jaywalkers left and right. He hadn’t even heard of defensive driving back in Manchester. Now it was second nature.
“I’ll probably wait until I get back home. Your right it’s not something best told over the phone.” They pulled up to the curb.
“This is the closest spot I’m going to find. I’ll be back.” He got out, shut the door, and headed down the block.
“Dom!”
“Yeah?”
“If you need me. . .”
“Yeah I know thanks.” He turned the corner. There it was. The storefront from his dreams. Purple, hhmm irony. He opened the door to the remembered sound of jingling bells. “Be with you in a minute” he heard from the back. A young woman emerged from behind the curtain.
“You!”
“How are you Dom?” She covered her surprise quickly.
“I’ve been calling you and calling you. Why didn’t you answer?” He thought she looked like she wanted to bolt from the room.
“What are you doing here?”
“He is here for answers my dear don’t you think you should give him some?” The same elderly woman from the other day came out from behind the curtain. “Hello again young man.” She looked at him and he noticed that her eyes were now violet too. Must be related.
“Mother?”
“Actually I’m her Aunt.” She set herself down in the same chair she used before and looked at them both. Emily was looking from one to the other confused.
“You know each other?”
“Actually I did a reading on him the other day.” Confusion turned to curiosity.
“Really? What did you see in his future?”
“You.” Dom was surprised that he had even spoken. The woman seemed pleased with herself. He assumed that that was a normal thing for her. “Why didn’t you answer my calls?” He repeated. “Why won’t you talk to me?”
“Let me put it this way. Do you introduce yourself to people; ‘Hi I’m a Hobbit?’ No, you don't, because you don’t want people to think of you as just a character. I don’t just go up to people and say ‘I see visions. Wanna snog?’ Doesn’t really work out often that way.”
“You didn’t have to run out. I would have listened”
“Sorry for being scared. I haven’t always had the best reactions to my little revelations. Laughter being the best response I can usually hope for. The worst you don’t really want to know.” Dom steered her to a couch against the wall and they sat down.
“If you want to tell me. I do.” He could tell this was probably not going to be easy for her. He looked at her Aunt. She looked sympathetic and nodded to Emily.
“It’s a good idea my dear, get it out you will feel better. I’ll make tea.” She got up and left through the curtain.
“First off I should explain a little bit about how it works. When I was little, I had what I thought were daydreams, bad ones. No unicorns and rainbows for me. You see, I only see visions of bad things. I have never seen a good vision. Aunt Rose says it’s because I have to learn control. She says my mind is like a TV I’m stuck on one channel like everyone else. However, every now and then something so bad is going to happen that it just breaks through. Like a news bulletin, you know. It kind of interrupts my regularly scheduled programming. Good things however, are for when you can control your mind. Like a remote, I could change the channel to whatever I wanted to see. I guess I haven’t earned my remote yet. Anyway, first you have your clairvoyants, they see pictures and images of things in their mind kind of randomly. Aunt Rose is one of those. Then you have your Mediums. The spirits of someone’s loved one show them what they need to know. I don’t know if you’ve heard of him or not but John Edward is a medium.” She looked at him for confirmation.
“Yeah, I’ve seen his show a couple of times, kind of interesting.” Personally, he had always thought it had to have been set up somehow but was quickly revising his opinion. Rose came back in, handed them each a steaming mug of cinnamon spice tea, and sat back down in her chair.
“Those are the two basic types of seers.” She took a sip of her tea and nodded to her aunt.
“And our lovely Emily happens to be both. This is very rare. Sometimes a spirit leads her to an answer and other times she just gets images on her own. It will take awhile but she is learning. She needs to learn to trust her instincts more.”
“I’m glad she did this time I hate to think what would have happened had she not made me call.” He sat back and waited for her to continue.
“Anyway when I was about eight or so I had a friend at school. Not a best friend or anything but a good friend. Erin. Erin along with all the other girls used to spend recess on the high bars. If you don’t know what they are its just two steel ladders going up about 6 feet. They were about ten feet apart with another ladder connecting them. Anchored in concrete. We would just spend the whole time just hanging upside down from our feet. One day on the way outside, I got a flash. Erin on the ground underneath and she was twisted around all funny. I begged her not to go on them. I told her something bad was going to happen.” By this time, she was crying, rocking back and forth and holding onto herself. Dom reached around her and held her until she stopped shaking.
“What happened? She didn’t listen?” He knew what was coming.
“No she didn’t. She called me a worrywart and the rest just snickered at me on their way to the playground. They said I was just jealous because I wanted her to be only my friend and didn’t want to share. You know typical childhood stuff. I kept begging her I even grabbed her coat. She told me to go away. That she wasn’t going to waste any more of her recess on the ground. I ran inside to get a teacher but it was too late she slipped. Later on, I was told that she died instantly. She had broken her neck in two places. I wasn’t allowed to go to her funeral. One of the kids told Erin’s mother about what I had said to Erin and when I showed up at the church, she called me a freak and told me I was not welcome. I guess when you have no one to blame you find someone. I was an easy target I guess. I ended up being home schooled after that even the teachers treated me terribly. Ever since, I have been a bit cautious about running my mouth. I try to avoid whatever is supposed to happen myself. Like one time I saw my ex-boyfriend getting his hand burned badly making dinner. I made dinner the whole week. Didn’t have to tell him anything. That kind of thing, but this time there was nothing I could do. I had to have you do it. I went right back to that eight year old begging and pleading terrified that I couldn’t prevent it again. It scared me so bad Dom. These things are usually vivid but this was more so.” Rose cleared her throat to get their attention.
“With that I think it is time for your friend to come in don’t you?” Billy?
“What friend?”
“The one in your car.” She looked smug again. “Not everything needs to be seen thought the minds eye you know.” At his puzzled look she continued, “I looked out the side window.”
“How did you know it was my car?”
“With a vanity plate that says ‘Hobbit1’?”
“Yeah well that was a bet. Luckily, the state of California had an issue with ‘pipsbtch’ that was what the original was. Give you one guess whose dare that was.” Dom smirked at the memory from when he went to register his Mercedes he had bought off of Mac. “I’ll go get him.”
Dom filled Billy in on the basics on the way back in. He left out the personal bits they were not his to tell. Even to Billy. Rose met them at the door with another mug of tea this time orange pekoe.
“I had a feeling cinnamon was not his thing.”
“She’s good.” Remarked Billy as he sipped his tea.
“You have no idea.” Dom introduced Billy to the women.
“Yep definitely a girl, even more so than Orli.” Billy whispered in his ear. They exchanged pleasantries for a little while.
“So will you tell me what you saw?” He gazed at her. She paled a little at the sight of his green eyes.
“I’m sorry it was just weird for a second. Are you sure you want to hear it? Honestly?”
“I would be lying if I said I was sure. I do know if I don’t ask I’ll regret it.” She regarded his open and honest face and proceeded.
“We were discussing the books when it happened, as he probably already told you.” Billy nodded and she continued, “Suddenly I was somewhere else or was seeing somewhere else anyway. I happens either way. There was a woman she had reddish hair and she was rather thin but pretty. She was staring at me. Then she was gone and another woman was talking to a police officer. I didn’t hear what he said all I heard was her saying ‘I believe they were flying together’.” She nodded to Billy “Then I saw your face being zipped into a bag. Then the first woman was back and she was standing beside you. Her mouth didn’t move or anything but she looked at me and I heard her say,‘save my baby!!’ I felt this wave of grief and terror overcome me. I had never had emotions used by a spirit to get their point across before. Believe me it was effective. Then Dom was shaking me awake. That was it.” She took another sip of her tea. Carefully avoiding their eyes.
“One thing though. That doesn’t explain how you knew that Billy wasn’t in Scotland.”
“New York cop.” Oh, well that makes sense. Dom sneaked a look at Billy. He was quiet. He could tell the other man was thinking things through before he said anything.
“Mum? My mother saved my life?”
“If it is not to personal has she been gone a long time my dear?” Billy looked to the kindly face of the old woman.
“Yeah she died when Margaret and I were kids. Da too”
“Loved ones tend to continue with what they did in life in your case you will always be her baby that needs a mom. She will always be there to watch out for you. I hope this comforts you some, my dear.” They all turned around at the sound of the bells on the door. A young man stepped in. He looked around.
“Sorry to interrupt I’ll come back later.” He started to back out the door. Rose stood up.
“No need Tom, I believe we are done here anyway.” She smiled and motioned him to a chair.
“How did you know my name?”
“I know many things my dear.” She leaned into Dom as he was getting his coat on and whispered, “Name tag.” Dom chuckled and walked to Emily.
“If I call you this weekend will you answer?” Please, please, please.
“If I am there and you are sure you want me to I will.” Did he want her to? Did he want her to? Hell Yeah. She was the most fascinating person he had ever met she was not going to get away that easy and he told her so. He leaned in for a kiss and noticed Aunt Rose smirking at him from the corner. He satisfied himself with just a simple kiss. No tongue in front of the elder relatives. Good rule to live by. He gave her another hug and left. Billy was outside on the sidewalk waiting for him.
“You ok?”
“Me? All I heard is that the girl I like sees dead people. You discovered your mother’s undying love saved your life. I should be asking you that.
“I knew all along that she watched over us. Well my sister did. She used to tell me that she would see mum sometimes and that she would talk to her. I thought she was crazy. I guess not. That’s one thing that won’t go as bad as I thought it would though.”
“What’s that Bill?”
“Telling her about all this. Come on lunch is on me.”
“You didn’t even have to strip last night to pay for it either.” Dom laughed.
“No it’s remarkably easy to get money back when you wait for him to fall asleep first.” Life was looking up. It was going to be a great time with Bill here. He could only imagine the trouble they would get into.
