"Kelly," Mrs. Glover pursed her lips as she tried to sneak into the class fifteen minutes after it had started. "You're late."
"Really?" she smiled innocently.
"Yes," she frowned. "I can't having you coming in late all the time, especially this late, it isn't fair to all the other students."
"Then just give me the detention and get it over with. It's not like I care," Kelly replied, going straight from innocence to bitterness in under a second.
Carrie shrank down into her desk, feeling Ashley's eyes on the back of her head.
"Kelly, where is this attitude coming from?"
Kelly felt herself starting to shake as a sudden wave of anger overtook her, "From up your ass. Will you give me the detention now? Cause I sure as hell don't want to be here anymore than you want me so let's get on with it."
Mrs. Glover had to take a step back, watching the normally sweet girl cautiously. This was not like her at all. She grabbed the pink notepad of detention slips from out of her desk, "You're really giving me no choice here, Kelly."
"Great assessment," Kelly mumbled under her breath.
Mrs. Glover turned back around, and Kelly quickly grabbed the slip from her hand, hurrying out of the class. Mrs. Glover looked at Ashley in the back of the room, who could only shrug in reply.

"Do you know what's up with Kelly?" Ashley asked, catching up with Carrie as they exited the class.
"You're her best friend, how would I know?" Carrie replied.
Ashley raised an eyebrow, "Did you not go pick her up this morning?"
"If I had, why would I be here on time and she be here fifteen minutes late?"
"I don't know," Ashley shrugged watching as Carrie walked right up to Stacey who had just passed them up and started a conversation. Ashley shook her head. Had she not warned Kelly?

"Hey there tiger," Ashley smiled as Kelly joined them for lunch.
"So they sprung you early OJ?" Mary teased.
"Yea," Kelly replied blandly. "They thought I was taking up space that could be used disciplining people that actually needed it."
"So, I take it she isn't coming this weekend after all?" Ashley asked, nodding to Kelly's right.
Kelly looked to find Carrie sitting with Stacey and the rest of her ho posse. She nodded, looking down to where the cheese on her pizza looked as if it could glow in the dark.
"I'm not hungry," she frowned, standing.
"Kelly, wait," Ashley said.
"I'll see y'all later," she nodded, going to dump her tray before exiting the cafeteria.
Carrie watched the door close behind the short Texan. She quickly covered up her frown as she laughed at whatever it was that had just been said by the red-head next to her.

Ashley took a deep breath as she walked up the stairs to Kelly's apartment the next morning. Her best friend hadn't returned to class the afternoon before after having left the cafeteria in such a hurry.
"Kelly!" Ashley called out, opening the front door that was always left unlocked.
She saw the small girl hurrying out of the bathroom and into her bedroom. Ashley frowned, noting her attire as she walked to the bedroom.
"Going to work?" Ashley asked, leaning against the door frame.
Kelly jumped, turning around quickly as she slipped on her shoes, "Shit, Ashley. Way to give somebody a heart attack."
"I called out when I came in," she replied, eyeing her carefully.
"And yes, Courtney called and asked if I could pick up an extra shift at the zoo this morning."
"What about school?"
Kelly shrugged, "It's just one day."
"And yesterday afternoon."
"Wow, I missed choir. I'm really screwed there," Kelly replied, sarcastically.
Ashley sighed, walking fully into the room and sitting on the bed, "KC, what's up?"
"Nothing, I could just use some extra money right now."
"I'm sorry, but you could always use some extra money, but you've never put work before school before, at least not during actual school hours. And detention? What was that about yesterday morning? You were flat out rude, which is totally not like you."
"PMS?" Kelly offered.
Ashley couldn't help but laugh, "Nice try."
Kelly smiled as she sat down on the chair for her desk.
"So, I know it has to do with the new girl," Ashley commented. "But I can't figure out how someone you've known for all of what? Three days now? Can get you so upset."
"I'm not upset," she shook her head. "I just don't want to deal with it."
"What else is new?"
Kelly narrowed her eyes at her.
Ashley put her hands up in surrender, "Sorry."
"She's still hanging out with Stacey?" Kelly asked curiously.
Ashley nodded.
"How could I have been so wrong about a person?"
"You were really enjoying spending time with her, huh?"
"For some odd reason, we just clicked, and you know how rare that is for me," Kelly replied. "I really thought she could've been a great friend."
"Why the sudden need for more friends?" Ashley asked. "Cause seriously, you have way more than necessary."
"Acquaintances, not friends. All I've got is you and Jebbie and them, and aren't y'all always telling me how I need to open up more with other people? Take a chance on actually trusting someone?"
"We meant on a guy," Ashley smiled. "But yea, even just a friend would make us happy. It's not that we don't love you to death, you know we do, we're just worried that you're hiding behind us, that's all."
"Hiding behind y'all? From what?"
"From whatever is out there. Kelly, you and I and the rest of this entire town know that you are meant for so much more than this place. But you've got to learn to open up and grow and not be so afraid, or else you're gonna be stuck here for the rest of your life."
"What's so bad about here? Y'all are here," she pointed out.
"See? There's you hiding behind us."
Kelly frowned, "Can you at least take me to work this morning?"
Ashley rolled her eyes, "Alright, come on then."
Kelly smiled as she grabbed her stuff.
"Kelly," Ashley said, stopping her for a second. "I'm sorry you thought you should trust her."
"Me too," she nodded before walking out of the room.
