Zack was amazed the next morning when he woke up surprisingly well rested. He was curled firmly against Brian’s chest with his head resting comfortably on his shoulder slowly waking up and finding his various hurts that had stiffened in the night. Brian mumbled something and pulled him a little closer. Zack kissed his cheek and settled back into his warm embrace. Faintly he heard the door open and he lifted his head enough to see who was sneaking in, he found Johnny peeking in at them and smiled. The short man smiled back and came the rest of the way into the room, “I was just making sure you guys were okay.” He whispered. Zack could feel the side of his head pressing against Brian’s shoulder throbbing slightly and he figured his face was probably black and blue but nodded anyway, “I’ve had worse.” He said quietly. Johnny nodded sympathetically, “Me too.”
Zack looked at him surprised and he smiled sadly, “That’s how Jimmy and I met,” he explained, “he caught my ex beating me with a pipe behind a bar.” He shrugged as if it really wasn’t anything to get excited about and Zack shuddered. At least his abusers had only used their fists and feet, he didn’t think he’d be alive if they had used something else and if he was, he would probably wish he wasn’t. Johnny laughed lowly, “That’s what everyone says.”
Zack didn’t say anything, there was nothing to say. He could say he was sorry, he could rave about the injustice of the small man before him being treated in such a way, he could share stories of his own abuse, but he didn’t. The past was past. He could do nothing to take those memories from him nor Johnny from him; they would live with their scars and nightmares. Johnny left the room as silently as he had entered and Zack pressed a little closer to Brian as he fell back asleep.
He woke up again and found Brian still soundly asleep even though it was pressing on one o’ clock in the afternoon. Zack’s stomach rumbled and he decided that after skipping out of dinner the night before, being scared half to death and getting beaten his body had earned lunch. Carefully he untangled himself from Brian and slowly got up, his muscles were stiff and sore and he was certain the entire left side of his face was three times its normal size and it made him feel unbalanced. Gingerly he made his way to the bathroom and flipped on the light. He stared at the sink for a moment before he raised his eyes to see the damage the goons had inflicted upon him. He was surprised to see that aside from a purplish welt near his eye his face was fine, it wasn’t the black and blue mess that it felt like. He reached up and carefully touched the side of his head and winced, most of the damage was under his hair that probably was a black and blue mess. Satisfied that he didn’t look absolutely horrid he turned off the light and went in search of Matt and food.
Shyly he looked around the corner into the kitchen and found Johnny sitting contently on Jimmy’s lap with his arms around his neck. Jimmy had his head resting against Johnny’s chest while his arms held the smaller man close; Johnny looked like he was half asleep. Zack didn’t see Matt and was tempted to check the living room, but the only way to get there was through the kitchen and he didn’t want to disturb the content pair at the table. His stomach growled again, audibly, and Johnny’s half lidded eyes blinked and opened all the way. He looked over and saw Zack with an arm firmly around his stomach and a bright blush on his cheeks. Johnny giggled and Jimmy gave him a sleepy smile.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to—” Zack stuttered becoming even more embarrassed. Johnny hopped off his lover’s lap and went over to one of the cabinets and pulled down a bowl, “You’re fine Zack,” he laughed, “you sound like Jimmy.” He grabbed a spoon out of a drawer and then went to another cabinet and pulled out three types of cereal, “Matt rarely shops for real food.” He said apologetically as he went to the refrigerator to get milk. Jimmy stood up and stretched his lithe body, “That’s because Matt can’t cook to save his life.” He said laughing. Zack felt a little better and crept into the room and over to the counter where Johnny had set out the cereal. He chose the box of Corn Pops and while he dumped some into the bowl asked about Matt, “Where is Matt?” he didn’t know why he felt so shy around these two, probably because he didn’t know them all that well. He had always been a little shy around strangers; his years of abuse had turned that shyness into a fear.
“He’s still asleep.” Jimmy said getting another bowl down and grabbing the Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Johnny rolled his eyes but stole a few crisps from Jimmy’s bowl as he was pouring. Zack watched them relaxing a little as Jimmy reached over and tickled Johnny’s side, he snickered and swatted his hand away before he grabbed more cereal and jumped out of Jimmy’s long reach. Knowing him and Johnny had come from similar situations made his shyness abate and knowing Jimmy had stopped Johnny’s ex from possibly killing him made it disappear entirely. He poured some milk into his bowl and went over to the table and sat down and watched the two play.
Jimmy was surprisingly fast but Johnny’s small size gave him a small advantage over the lankier man and he exploited that to it’s full. He darted around Jimmy and grabbed more cereal before he ducked out of reach and hopped away a few steps laughing. Jimmy smiled and waited for his next move; Johnny looked him over critically looking for another opening and took a false step to the left and dove right and slipped under Jimmy’s guard again and got more cereal before he was once again out of reach. Zack laughed as Johnny pranced just out of reach. Jimmy jumped toward him and he squeaked and darted to the other side of the room.
“Well, well. Dinner and a show.” Matt’s husky voice said from the doorway. Zack looked back at him and grinned happily. Jimmy flipped him off but kept his focus on the laughing Johnny. Matt rolled his eyes and walked in and gave Zack a gentle kiss on the cheek and pulled him close to his bare chest, “How’re you feeling angel?” he whispered. Zack rested his head against his warm chest, careful not to bump the side of his head, “I feel like I got hit by a bus.” He said quietly.
Johnny squeaked and the two looked up, Jimmy had finally caught him and was busy hoisting the laughing man into his arms. Zack giggled and Matt snorted, then his warmth left and he went over to the cabinet and got out another bowl. He put the empty bowl down and grabbed Jimmy’s before he came back over to the table and sat down next to Zack. Jimmy glared at him and Johnny clapped a hand over his mouth to quiet his laughter.
“Bastard.” Jimmy said still glaring at him. Matt shrugged, “I got you another bowl.” He said giving him and cheeky smile. Jimmy growled and carefully set Johnny on the floor again where he continued to laugh.
Zack finished his cereal quickly and thought about getting another bowl but decided he didn’t want to overload his body with sugar after all that had happened. Matt took a little longer to finish while he and Jimmy argued about various things, Zack and Johnny listened and caught each other’s eye and broke out into laughter when the conversation dove into territory neither were familiar with. Johnny proved to know more about what they were talking about and threw in the occasional word or phrase to keep Zack somewhat in the loop but with most of the video game talk he was well out of his depth.
He was beginning to think he would just have to outright ask what the hell they were talking about when the conversation shifted again and Zack realized he could actually begin to contribute to their discussion.
“If you can find a decent guitarist or two then I’ll think about it.” Jimmy said rolling his eyes, “I’m joining another one of you ‘Successful Failures’.”
Matt sighed but didn’t argue the point and Zack blurted out, “I can play guitar.” A sudden wave of self-consciousness washed over him and he shrank back into his chair when they all turned to look at him with surprise.
“Well, uh, I mean a little, it’s nothing too good; Brian’s better.” He mentally smacked himself for opening his mouth again. Matt’s warm arm wrapped around his waist and pulled him close and some of his embarrassment faded. Jimmy gave him a thoughtful look and Johnny’s eyes held nothing but reassurance, but he still felt like someone was going to bite him.
“I dunno, I think we’re about even.” Brian’s sleepy voice immediately dashed all his fear. He sat up and was out of chair before the movement really even registered to him and pounced on Brian. Sleep had definitely helped Brian, though his movements were a bit stiff, his face had color and the black eye had faded a little. Zack hugged him as tightly as he dared remembering how sore Brian’s ribs had been the night before.
“I didn’t think you’d be up so soon.” Matt said. Brian smiled and hugged Zack tightly, “No rest for the weary; I’ve gotta keep this klutz outta trouble.” He replied. Zack bumped his head against his shoulder in reply to the insult but didn’t let go of him. Matt snickered and then asked in his low voice that sent a shiver down Zack’s spine, “How long have you two been playing guitar?”
“Since I was little,” Brian said, “my dad plays, he taught me almost as soon as I could get my fingers around the neck.”
Zack finally pulled away from him realizing that standing was probably wearying Brian and he pulled him over to his vacant chair and he sat gratefully. Zack sat comfortably on Matt’s lap. Brian rolled his eyes and Zack playfully swatted at his shoulder before he answered Matt’s question, “I started learning when I was twelve.” He said sheepishly. Matt’s warm lips pressed against his neck and he felt reassurance in that small action.
“He was in a band when we were in high school.” Brian added helpfully, Zack shrank in Matt’s arms and again warm lips met his skin to calm him. He nodded meekly, “It wasn’t anything, just a punk band.” He said lowering his eyes; he could feel his cheeks burning. Brian snickered and Zack lightly kicked his leg.
“Well what was it called?” Jimmy asked idly wrapping an arm around Johnny’s waist. Zack sighed, “M.P.A.”
“Mad Porn Action.” Brian clarified before any could ask. Zack felt and heard Matt laugh beneath him and he smiled a little. Zack sat contently in Matt’s lap inhaling his now familiar scent and listening to his measured breaths. He had a feeling Brian was beginning to doze off again and forcefully roused himself making everyone at the table look at him when he slid off Matt’s lap and stretched. “Well, do you guys wanna know what we can do?”
Zack realized not long after his announcement that Brian would be the only one to perform, his guitar was still at the apartment; the thought of him needing it had never crossed his mind. They settled in the living room while Matt grabbed his guitar and amp. Zack curled up next to Brian while they waited and wondered at the content feeling he had. A little over fifteen hours ago he had been absolutely terrified he wasn’t going to see the current day and now he was half dozing on the couch with his best friend and his boyfriend’s best friends like nothing was wrong.
Matt returned before his musings could disrupt the calm that had settled over him and he moved so Brian could get into a better position to play. Brian looked over at him as he strummed a few notes getting used to Matt’s guitar and Zack laughed. Brian enjoyed showing off and Zack had a pretty good idea as to what he was going to play. Sure enough Brian played the opening lines of One by Metallica and immediately the other three sat up a little straighter as their attention focused on him. Zack tried to hide his smile but could still feel it tugging at the corner of his mouth.
After he was sure everyone knew what he was playing Brian skipped to the middle and gleefully dove into the solo and added a couple of his own embellishments. Zack held a hand over his mouth as he watched the other three’s eyes widen in amazement. Once the final note finished reverberating Zack let out a tiny giggle in the silent room and held his hand up and Brian smacked it solidly and then they both broke out laughing.
Matt shook his head slowly and then turned and grinned at Jimmy; the taller man looked over at him slowly and shook his head in disbelief. Johnny laughed and settled back onto the couch, “That was awesome.” He said still smiling. Brian ducked his head in a bow of acknowledgement. He started to hand the guitar to Zack and then stopped, “Oh wait…”
Zack laughed as he pulled the guitar back onto his lap. Matt gave him a quizzical look as did the other two. Zack held up his hand shyly, “I forgot I don’t have my guitar with me, I’m a lefty.”
Johnny sat up again with interest, “Really?”
Brian and Zack nodded. Jimmy leaned forward with a playfully intense gaze, “I’ve heard of these ‘left handed guitarists’ but I’ve never actually seen one.” He looked Zack over again and Zack laughed. Johnny lightly smacked his arm and rolled his eyes, Jimmy poked his side making him yelp.
“Children please.” Matt said reaching over Johnny’s head and swatting Jimmy’s shoulder. Jimmy’s retort was silenced by the soft sound of a car door shutting. The content feeling Zack had been luxuriating in since he woke up was replaced by stark fear. Brian set the guitar down out of the way and pulled Zack closer to him. Almost as one Matt and Jimmy got up, Jimmy’s eyes met Johnny’s for a split second and then the small man was over with Brian and Zack pulling on their arms to get them to stand. Even in his terror Zack had to admire the communication between the two, he wondered how many conversations they had without saying anything at all.
Brian and Zack got up quickly and followed Johnny back to the guest room. Despite his calm appearance Zack caught the slight tremble in Johnny’s hand as he locked the door. Zack was already worried about Matt, terrified even, for his safety he added Jimmy into his list of people to worry about.
Even with his towering presence Johnny didn’t seem weak, but standing alone watching the door Zack had an idea as to how fragile the small man was. He had spoken almost dismissively of how he and Jimmy had met and Zack had actually believed that small act. He saw now that without Jimmy’s guarding presence he was just as terrified as he was.
He released his death grip on Brian and instead hugged Johnny close, he accepted the hug and almost melted in Zack’s arms. A low sound reached Zack’s ears and he vaguely remembered something similar from the night before and he took a shuddering breath and held Johnny tighter.
“Matt.” The small man said quietly, Zack was confused for a moment before he realized the sound was coming from Matt, he felt his heart slow a little and the once terrifying sound became a sort of comfort. He felt Brian’s reassuring presence at his back and the warmth of Johnny’s breath on his neck kept him grounded and away from the panic that was threatening to consume him. He could feel his limbs shaking, his legs more so than his arms because they had nothing to hold.
Johnny nearly tore Zack’s arms off when a screech of pain came from somewhere else in the house, Zack kept a firm hold on him though as he struggled to get to the door. He turned back to Zack with fear in his eyes, “Jimmy.” He whispered. Zack felt sick when he didn’t let his arms loosen, but tough as little Johnny seemed to be his conscious wouldn’t be able to hold the burden of his maiming or death if Zack let him go freely out the door.
What about Jimmy? Can you live with knowing he may be dying or dead and you’re keeping Johnny away from him? His mind mocked. Still he held Johnny closer as he whimpered. He couldn’t hear Matt anymore, he had no idea what had happened to Jimmy, and he had no idea who currently had the upper hand in the fight. He hadn’t heard any gunshots and that heartened him.
Unless they’re using silencers. His mind was intent on crushing any little reason he had to hope Matt and Jimmy were alive and relatively unharmed. Johnny trembled in his arms and Zack tried to act as brave as he had when they had first entered the room but his limbs betrayed him and continued to shake.
A floorboard in the hallway squeaked and Zack felt his breath still; neither Matt nor Jimmy would creep up on them, if anything he was certain they would scream for them to run.
If they’re even still breathing He resisted the urge to his himself in the head to force the pessimistic thoughts out. The watched the handle turn slowly and stop when it hit the lock. Whoever was on the other side decided to do away with stealth and with a deafening bang to disrupt the eerie silence that had fallen over the house the door was kicked open.
Zack reacted as soon as the door was open and the two men rushed in. He turned and shoved Johnny toward Brian and in the seconds of confusion after the door was open he slipped into the hallway.
“Hey you sorry sons of bitches you want me!” His voice was high with fear but he didn’t care. If he could keep Brian from further injury and Johnny from any whatsoever a little humiliation on his part was a small price to pay. The two men stopped and turned around momentarily confused, a second ago he had been in the room.
Before they could gather their wits again he jumped forward and kicked the closest man solidly in the crotch. He fell to the floor with a high sound of pain Brian and Johnny took advantage of the other man’s turned back and Johnny hit him squarely in the kidneys with an animal sound of fury. The man gasped and fell to his knees and Brian kicked him hard in the back of the head. Before the man was on the floor Johnny was out of the room and tearing past Zack to go find Jimmy. Zack turned and followed him with Brian on his heels.
A/N: Oh no! Where are Jimmy and Matt?! Honestly I have no idea either, but we’ll find them soon enough won’t we!
