After the Koyra spoke the leaves around them rustled signaling someone’s passage through the trees. In a moment three Api and the two Koyra stepped out from the trees into the small circle of light cast by their waning fire. Immediately James could see there was something very wrong with the Api. Their eyes were glazed with fever and there were dark circles under their eyes as if they hadn’t slept in weeks. Something about them put him on edge.
“What do you want?” The Koyra asked bluntly. James glanced at him out the corner of his eye and saw he had positioned himself between the new arrivals and their fallen captain. The biggest of the three Api bristled at the lack of ceremony, “Have you let the Koyra take over your ranks while your captain is down.” He snapped. Brian growled, “When did you start letting your Koyra attack fellow Api?”
Zack snarled when one of the other two Koyra shifted forward. Immediately he flinched back growling softly.
“Growling and snapping at each other isn’t going to answer questions.” James snapped glaring at Zack. The Koyra met his gaze with hard eyes but he stopped growling. “Now why did you attack us?” James asked the larger Api when Zack quieted. James stood a little closer to Johnny; there was something very wrong with this group. The larger Api didn’t really look at him, his fevered gaze landed a little to his left. At first he thought he might be blind but his eyes darted over to Zack when he bared his teeth at the other Koyra.
“We were not certain if you were friend or foe.” The Api said flatly. James stared at him for a moment, “So you attacked to find out. What did you think our retaliation would be?” he asked incredulously.
“Sir we hailed you twice and you did not respond.” He said. James looked at Brian the strategist was staring at the five uneasily he glanced at James and gave a slight shake of his head. James looked at the Koyra, he was staring hard at the five, and he went into a light crouch and bared his teeth again.
“If we don’t get outta here soon we’re gonna run out of air.” A second Api said nervously. James started and again shot a look over to Brian, the strategist was slowly moving closer to him. Johnny gripped his hand almost painfully.
“James,” Zack said quietly, “run.” Then he let loose a snarl that was half a roar of rage and launched himself at the biggest Koyra. The five newcomers panicked. One Api turned and ran blindly into the trees screaming for air support. The other two drew their weapons. Brian had his own weapon out and blasted the smaller of the two, “Get the captain and go Jimmy!” he yelled. James forced himself to move and he and Johnny grabbed their unconscious captain and headed away from the battle.
He didn’t know how far they ran, he figured it wasn’t far though; the captain was heavier than he looked and they were running blind. The dark under the trees was as claustrophobic as it had been in the open water. He felt like an idiot with his hand stuck out in front of him but it was better than running face first into a tree.
“Alright,” He panted, “stop here. Hopefully Zack can find us and hopefully he’ll be dragging Brian along with him.” He set the captain down and sat down. Johnny’s hand found his again, “What was wrong with them?” he asked quietly. James sighed, “I have no idea what was wrong with them, but they were hallucinating. They all seemed to be feverish and they looked like they hadn’t slept in quite awhile.” He went through the symptoms again but without a real examination of them he couldn’t think of what would’ve caused their strange behavior.
“How long should we wait?” Johnny asked after a moment. James slipped an arm around him, “Until we can actually see where we’re going. I don’t feel like running into any more trees.”
Johnny giggled quietly and scooted closer to him. Away from the fire the air was down right cold, he shivered slightly and held Johnny close.
He lifted his head stiffly when a twig snapped a little too close for comfort. He started when he saw Brian asleep on the ground next to him, his breathing was deep and even but sapphire blood covered his sleeve and his jacket was torn. He looked to where they had dropped the captain and saw Zack curled next to him also sleeping peacefully.
Zack looked markedly worse than Brian, his face was smeared with dark blood but it looked like he had cleaned most of it off. His breathing was a little shallower but still even.
The leaves rustled behind him and he turned around growling quietly but he saw nothing in the tangled underbrush.
“An animal getting breakfast, it’ll move off soon once it catches our scent. They’re pretty skittish.” Zack’s quiet voice said. James turned back around and relaxed a little with the explanation, “Are you alright?” he asked quietly rubbing his neck, he was never sleeping upright again. Johnny grumbled next to him and tightened his arms around his waist. The Koyra didn’t answer immediately, “I don’t know.” He said finally. Despite his stiffness and tiredness James carefully pulled Johnny’s arms off him so he could inspect the Koyra.
“What’s wrong?” he murmured once he settled next to him. Zack sat up and winced, “Cracked rib I think, but that’s not what’s bothering me.” He whispered, “I feel a little dizzy and my fingers feel kinda numb.”
James frowned as he thought, “I don’t know enough about your physiology…” he muttered as he gently took his hand and tried to check his circulation, “How much blood do you think you lost last night?” he asked while he moved his fingers around.
“I’ve lost more and felt fine.” He said. James growled quietly in frustration and put his hand down, “I don’t know enough about your body to know what’s going wrong.”
“I think I was infected with whatever plagued the others.” Zack said quietly. James stared at him a moment and then shook his head, “If that were the case we would all be sick, we were close to them too.”
“I don’t think it was airborne,” Zack said, he pulled his jacket off and James saw the nasty bite on his arm, “I think it was through the bite, and no Brian wasn’t bitten.” He said before James could become alarmed. “I’ve been bitten before, but I’m immune to the venom, usually it just bleeds for a minute or two then bruises and that’s it.”
James looked closer at the bite, it had stopped bleeding but it was red and angry looking, the purple bruise covered almost his entire upper arm. Gently James took his arm and frowned and felt his hand again, “It’s a lot warmer than your hand. How much does it hurt?”
“It feels like it’s on fire, it’s stiff and sore, and you can’t smell it, but it smells like a wound that’s been left to fester for a week.” He whimpered quietly when James ran his fingers closer to the bite.
“Have you cleaned it with anything?” he asked reaching into one of his many pockets to get his supplies. Zack nodded, “I cleaned last night once we found you. It didn’t hurt as much then but it already smelled rotted.”
“What’s wrong?” Matt’s sleepy voice made James pause in his search, “How do you feel?” he demanded. He had, after all, been bitten by the Koyra as well. He really didn’t want to deal with two patients if there were more of those insane Api running around the woods. Matt sat up and rolled his neck, “Cold and sore. What’s wrong?” he asked looking at Zack. He frowned when he saw the Koyra’s arm, “What the hell is that?” he murmured gently taking his arm.
Zack pulled his arm back before he could touch, “It hurts.” He whispered. Matt lowered his hand and looked around, “What happened?”
“We were attacked by diseased Koyra and Api.” James said pulling out a syringe and a bottle of universal antibodies. Zack eyed him warily, “What’s that?”
“Universal antibody.” He said distractedly, “I don’t know what you’ve come into contact with but this will either take care of it or slow it down enough for me to find out what’s wrong and give you proper treatment.”
“Do you have to use the needle?”
James looked up at him only mildly surprised; he’d dealt with bigger soldiers that were terrified of needles. Matt reached over and pulled Zack close. The Koyra hid his head in the captain’s shoulder and shuddered. James sanitized a small part of his arm and the Koyra whimpered the tenseness in his arm made the wound ooze dark blood. Matt murmured quietly to him in that strange singing language and he relaxed a little. Without a warning James stuck the needle in his arm and gave him the injection.
The Koyra yelped loudly and jerked his arm away as soon as he was let go. He curled his injured arm in front of him so it was protected by his body and Matt’s.
“What’d you do?” Johnny asked sleepily looking around. James shook his head, “Shot.” Was all he said. Johnny nodded.
“Do your shot quieter next time.” Brian grumbled. James rolled his eyes and decided to pester the cranky strategist more by checking over his wounds. Brian stayed mostly unresponsive and unhelpful while he looked him over. He wasn't too banged up, a couple shallow wounds and burns and plenty of bruises but nothing life threatening. He finally sighed and left him alone and went back to the captain and Zack.
Zack still had his head hidden in the captain’s shoulder and Matt looked up at James worriedly, “He’s too warm.” He said quietly. James reached over and pressed the back of his hand against the back of Zack’s neck, “I can’t tell.” He said in frustration, “With his lower body temperature he feels too cold.”
Matt nodded in understanding, “He still feels cold to me, but not as cold as he should.”
Zack lifted his head, “I feel cold.” He murmured. He rested his chin on Matt’s shoulder and closed his eyes again. James stared at him trying to throw together any medical theory he could apply to his strange patient. A cool gust of wind tousled his hair and made him wish for another warm fire.
The Koyra stiffened and in one fluid motion stood up and glared at the trees growling softly.
“Oh Gods not again.” Brian moaned. He pushed himself up and readied his weapon and watched both the tangled underbrush and Zack. Johnny was at Jimmy’s side in a moment watching the trees uneasily.
“Where are they Zacky?” Matt whispered slowly standing up. Zack took two deep breaths, “They’re fanned out, I’m guessing seven individuals.” He tilted his head back and forth, “They don’t know where we are, they’re just scouting the direction they saw us run in and hoping they’ll stumble across us.” He said finally.
“Are there any other Koyra?” Matt asked sounding more awake. Zack shook his head, “I made sure there weren’t.” He said softly. Matt nodded and rolled his shoulders, “Well, I don’t feel like making their search an easy one. Let’s go.”
