Had some birthdays last weekend, but I did find some time to write the next chapter. :)
Ch 9
Kelly shut the door to her hotel room and leaned back against it for a moment. She loved the time she spent with her band, but she needed some time to herself before the show later. It was obvious to everyone that there was something wrong between her and Ashley, though the distance between them had gone unnoticed for half of the week that they had been away on promo. Kelly wasn’t angry so much, her feelings were hurt, and she knew Ashley felt the same.
Ashley longingly watched as the band headed down the hall to go to the pool. She wanted to tan and have fun; she knew that someone would ask what was going on with her and Kelly though, so she turned in the opposite direction and headed to Kelly’s room. Jason couldn’t distract the band from the rift between Kelly and herself forever, so she needed to go apologize to her friend.
Kelly groaned and got up from her bed when she heard the knock on the door. “I know I don’t nap much, but really?” She sighed and opened the door quickly; ready to tell Jason that she did not want to hang out around the pool. Kelly stared at Ashley before she opened the door the rest of the way and stepped aside so her friend could come into the room. She wanted some peace, and the best way to get it was talk out their problems. “No swimming?”
Ashley was relieved that Kelly was at least talking to her; it didn’t matter if it was a trivial comment. Anything was better than their strained exchanges while she had done Kelly’s makeup for the interviews the past few mornings. “No.” Ashley walked over to the table in the room and sat down in one of the chairs as Kelly shut the door. “I really want to apologize because I miss talking with my best friend.” She was willing to forget about her misgivings of Carrie if Kelly would talk out their fight. Their friendship mattered more than her hurt feelings.
Kelly studied Ashley’s expression and body language, and then she walked over and joined her friend at the table. She wanted to put the fight behind them, but she had to make sure that Ashley wasn’t going to act the same way again. “I want to apologize too, but we need to talk about a few things first. You had no right to tell Carrie the things you said about me and about her. And you really hurt me when you said I was only hanging out with her to avoid being in a relationship.”
Ashley didn’t think that she had been wrong about her claims of Carrie’s behavior, but she agreed with everything else Kelly had said. “I’m sorry, Kelly. In a backwards way, I was trying to stop you from hurting yourself. Instead, I hurt you by telling her personal stuff about you, and I’m really sorry for that.” Ashley wasn’t sure what to say about the avoidance claim, though she spoke up when Kelly smiled at her a little. “I don’t know if you’re trying to avoid dating or not, it was just something that occurred to me while we were fighting… but I have thought about it before.”
It wasn’t a complete apology, but Kelly thought that it was good that they were talking openly. “I can forgive you for being overprotective; I do it all the time with Jase.” She leaned forward and relaxed when Ashley laughed at her joke to ease the tension between them. “I’m not trying to avoid going out with someone, and I know you’ve thought about it before. All your comments about my parties, and more recently Carrie, have made it clear that you think I’m holding back because you think I think that I’m going to get hurt. That’s not what I think though.”
Ashley let out a small giggle at the awkward sentence. “I think that last one confused me, but I heard that’s not how you feel.” She still thought it was a bad idea to be friends with Carrie, though the only hurt that she had seen from Kelly the past few days had been because of her own actions. “It just seems like a bad idea to be friends with Carrie when you like her. I’m not telling you to not be friends with her, but could we maybe check out girls today or something?” Ashley blushed when Kelly gave her a look for the weird request. “I just want you to be happy, and you have been lately, but I don’t want that to stop if you start to develop more feelings for Carrie.”
Kelly knew that she had to have the best friend in the world; she didn’t know of many straight girls that would cruise for girls just because of a friend. “Maybe.” She had to laugh when Ashley started to get up from the table, like her friend was about to run out the door to find a girl for her. “I want to say I’m sorry for how I just accused you of thinking I’m lame and trying to run my life. It…” Kelly sighed and looked away from Ashley. She really didn’t want to admit why she had hurt her friend, it would make Ashley seem right, though the other girl wasn’t. “It hurts; like you think I’m messed up or something. I know I didn’t have the best taste in guys, and I haven’t really gone out with any great girls or whatever, but I had no right to just say it to you like that.”
Ashley thought it was clear that Kelly was still upset with her since her friend had started to apologize but had gone into how hurt Kelly had felt. “I forgive you too.” Ashley stood up from her seat and walked around the table to stand next to Kelly. “You should have yelled at me more for stealing your phone and all, but I’m glad you didn’t. It would have made this all that much harder.” She hugged Kelly tightly when her friend stood to hug her. “I’m sorry for this whole fight. Just promise to say something to me if you think I’m treating you like you’re, lame, as you put it.”
Kelly pulled back from the hug with a smile as she shook her head. “I’ll tell you if you’re being pushy about my dating life.” She took off for the bed and jumped on it carelessly. “I was going to take a nap, but what do you say we watch a movie or something?” Kelly didn’t care what they did, she just missed hanging out with Ashley. It was no fun to be away on promotion when she couldn’t share any of the down moments with her best friend. Kelly laughed and braced herself on the bed when Ashley took a running leap and jumped on the bed. “I’ll take that as a yes.”
“How about we forget the movie? You still haven’t told me about what happened when you hung out with Carrie before we left.” Ashley held her hands up when Kelly gave her a look. “No pushing, I swear, I just want to hear about what you did. Jason was the one who got upset when you didn’t come home that night, not me.” Ashley laughed when Kelly blushed and muttered about she and Jason being too overprotective. “Cuz we love you.”
Kelly rolled her eyes and moved so that she was sitting with her back against the headboard. “Like I haven’t heard that before, that’s like your guys’ favorite excuse to try to get away with it. I don’t know why he was upset. I called and told him what happened.” Kelly chuckled when Ashley mimicked her position and looked at her expectantly. “Which I’m guessing from your look that he didn’t tell you?”
Ashley grabbed a pillow and fluffed it before she stuck it between her and the headboard. “You can’t tell me you didn’t notice that he hasn’t really spoke to me since our fight. You’re his sister, he’s not going to tell me stuff about you if he thinks we’re fighting.” Ashley wouldn’t say that she was upset with Jason’s behavior, because she wasn’t; she thought it was good that Jason picked Kelly over her. “So, are you going to tell me what happened when you went out with Carrie?”
Kelly hesitated for a second; once again, she watched Ashley’s expression to see if her friend was genuine. The curious look on her friend’s face made Kelly decide to tell Ashley about the night. “It was a lot of fun. We got all the stuff together for a girls’ night in, and then we went back to her place and ordered some pizza. You laugh, but it was nice to not have to order three different pizzas.”
Ashley quieted down even though Kelly had giggled too. “Okay, okay, I heard all about how nice it was that you guys are both vegetarians before your date. Tell me about the good stuff, like the movies. By the way, I had to watch sports with Jason so he didn’t get all big brother-y and call you.”
Kelly had to smile that Ashley had kept an eye on Jason for her, but the mention of her and Carrie’s date had brought her down a little bit. “Well, we watched “The Prin-"
"Oh, Kelly, you didn’t.” Ashley sat up straight and stared at her best friend. She knew what movie Kelly had picked out without hearing the whole title. They watched it whenever Kelly was feeling down and needed a quick boost. “There’s no way she would like that movie. She’s into scary movies.” Ashley put her hand over her mouth and tried not to laugh when Kelly nodded. “She seriously watched it with you?”
Kelly lightly shoved Ashley’s shoulder when the other girl laughed at her. “How do you know what movies she likes anyway? And why didn’t you tell me? I picked out romantic comedies because I thought they would be- hey! Don’t laugh!” Kelly pouted and crossed her arms over her chest as Ashley laughed at her unfortunate choices. “At least she watched one?”
Ashley giggled and picked up another pillow and held onto it while Kelly pouted harder. She knew about the kind of movies Carrie liked because of some interview at some ceremony, and if she had heard it, then Kelly must have too. The only reason the interview had stuck with her was that she had found it odd that Carrie Underwood liked scary movies. “Was she drunk and unable to grab the remote from you? I mean she’s tiny, but I think she could take you if she tried- ow!”
Kelly playfully glared at Ashley; she had hit the pillow her friend held, not Ashley. “She watched the whole thing without complaining, and then she even tried not to say anything when I asked her what she thought of the movie.” Kelly thought Carrie had behaved sweetly all evening. The whole night had shown her that she had been right about being friends with the blonde. “But, yes, we did drink and,” Kelly talked louder when Ashley laughed about their drinking. “That’s why I didn’t come home. Neither of us were going to drive after a few drinks.”
Ashley thought that it was kind of nice on Carrie’s part to watch the movie, so she wouldn’t tease Kelly for the movie thing. “So, what else did you do? You watched a movie she would want to watch, right? I know you didn’t drink and fall asleep.” Ashley tried not to smile suggestively, because she still wasn’t entirely behind Kelly having a thing for a straight girl, but she was trying to be supportive. Ashley raised her eyebrows when Kelly blushed. “Oh, now you have to tell me.”
Kelly picked at the comforter and tried to think of a way to explain the rest of the night. “Well… she turned sports on and I tried to watch it, but she saw that I didn’t like it, so she changed it to softball. And I said the dumbest thing when I found out she used to play. She had said that she played catcher, and I of course, said that only pretty girls get the mask. That was so embarrassing, Ash. I mean she didn’t say anything really, but I felt like such a dork.”
Ashley pulled her legs in and wrapped her arms across her knees as she tried to think of which way to take the conversation. She wanted to laugh, although she felt like it might be too soon after their fight to laugh at Kelly’s flirty admission. “So, wait, she likes scary movies, played softball, and she’s not gay?” Ashley stopped faking an incredulous expression when Kelly laughed at her antics. “That was sweet of her to change it to a real game so you wouldn’t be bored.”
"It was.” Kelly took a deep breath and shifted closer to Ashley on the bed. It was nice to have Ashley to talk to since she hadn’t had her best friend’s support after the date with Carrie. “I have to tell you something, but please don’t laugh.” Kelly wasn’t convinced when Ashley playfully crossed her heart with a finger. “Seriously though, no laughing.” Kelly looked down at the comforter again when Ashley leaned in and waited expectantly. “When we were tired and falling asleep on the couch, her friend covered me with a blanket, and I thought okay, cool, I’m spending the night on the couch and her friend’s sleeping on the chair whatever,”
"What friend?” Ashley was thrown by the introduction of another person in the story. She had thought it was just Kelly that had hung out with Carrie. Ashley lightly shoved Kelly’s hand away when her friend tried to push her for her interruption.
“Ashley, focus! I’ll explain about Matt later.” Kelly waited until Ashley nodded and didn’t speak for a couple moments, and then she continued. “So, I was like, okay I’m spending the night on the couch. I was falling asleep, and Carrie’s suddenly back, waking me up and asking if I can get up long enough to get to one of the guest rooms. She practically had to carry me because I was so sleepy.” Kelly stopped and smiled as she remembered the events.
Ashley wanted to laugh at the mental image she had, of her tired and tipsy best friend trying to walk and the blonde country singer dragging Kelly. She knew from experience that once Kelly was asleep, it was hard as hell to get the other girl up and moving around. She wouldn’t admit it to Kelly, but it sounded like Carrie could be thoughtful. “That was nice of her.”
Kelly grinned when Ashley didn’t follow up the statement with some snarky comment about how Carrie had only done it to avoid seeming like a bad host. “She totally picked me over her best friend.” Off Ashley’s confused look, Kelly explained her hasty remark. “Matt is her best friend. He came over because he had a fight with his girlfriend, and we all got along, but she left him in a chair. I asked her about it when we were walking to the guestroom, and she said he probably deserved to be in the chair because of his fight with his girlfriend. Apparently Matt does dumb things too.”
Ashley laughed along with Kelly, glad that they were talking like they normally would. “I will probably regret saying this, but I can see why you want to be friends with her. If you tell anyone I said that though, I will deny it, Kelly.” Ashley kept up her stubborn look while Kelly grinned at her, though she relented and hugged Kelly after a few moments. “I’m glad you had a nice night with her.” She settled back against the headboard and watched as Kelly smiled and nodded happily. “Does this mean we’re not going to be throwing any more parties?” It was probably the closest Ashley could get to asking if Kelly still liked Carrie; partially because she didn’t want to bring up any bad feelings on Kelly’s part, and because she still wasn’t convinced about Carrie.
Kelly shrugged her shoulders and then moved so that she was laying down on the bed. “I like the parties.” She had a feeling Ashley wasn’t asking about the parties because of their heavy schedule for the next month. As glad as she was to have Ashley to talk to again, she knew her friend’s distrust of Carrie’s intentions hadn’t vanished. “We’ll just have to see how the time works out. I’m not going to stop throwing the parties though, even if I do meet someone and start to go out with them. I didn’t before, and I wouldn’t now.” Kelly looked seriously at Ashley for a moment. It was enough for her if Ashley tried, so her friend’s smile made her grin. “I have to tell you what she did on our not-a-date date, it was so sweet.”
Ashley chuckled and listened attentively as Kelly started to tell her about the date with Carrie. As Kelly filled her in on the details, Ashley promised herself that she would be nice the next time Kelly brought up Carrie, or if the blonde was around them. It didn’t sound like Carrie was trying to hurt Kelly’s feelings, so she had to give the other girl a chance. Maybe they could all be friends once Kelly got over the crush on Carrie.

Kelly kept her eye on the door of the hotel room that was next to her own as she frantically tried to get into her own. “Damn it, come on!” She looked down to see where the slot was for the card and saw that she was trying to force the key between the card reader and the door. “Crap, no wonder it wasn’t working.” Kelly giggled when she heard Ashley scream her name. The other girl was trying to find her; she had run out when her friend had left the room to grab some mascara.
The light indicating that the card had been verified lit up, and Kelly quickly jerked open the door to her room. She quickly shut her door and ran for her suitcase when she heard Ashley’s door open. They were going out since it was their last night of promotion, and Ashley wanted to put makeup on her, so Kelly had ran when her friend had fallen for her compromise of mascara and blush. She loved Ashley, but she didn’t need to wear makeup everyday of the freaking trip.
Kelly quietly made her way through her room as she looked for her phone. She could text Carrie until it was time to leave, that activity wouldn’t require a lot of noise. It was just an added bonus if Ashley thought she wasn’t in her room because she wasn’t making any noise. Carrie had texted her earlier in the day to find out how she was doing after all of her promotion. At the time she had been asleep because everyone had been out late after the show the night before, so Kelly had texted Carrie back and told the other girl to call her once Carrie had left the studio for the day.
She found her phone right where she had left it; but Kelly didn’t feel silly that she had temporarily forgotten where she had left her phone. She had managed to escape an hour of primping and ticked Ashley off, Kelly considered herself to be the victor all in all since Ashley was probably heading off to annoy the band to find her. Kelly silently chuckled and removed her phone from the charger. She was already dressed for their night out, her promo was over for a while, and she and Ashley were practically back to normal after the last few days of tanning and shopping.
Carrie picked up Ace’s toy ball as she called Kelly. She had felt a tiny bit remorseful for texting Kelly when the girl had been asleep in the morning, if the misspelled words in her friend’s text had been any indication, so she hadn’t texted Kelly back once she had deciphered Kelly’s answering text. She had laughed over the text though. Carrie smiled when she heard Ace’s tiny footsteps behind her as she walked through the house to get to her backyard. She hadn’t had much time to take Ace outside to play because of her work in the studio.
When she reached the backdoor, Carrie stood to the side and looked down at Ace because she knew Ace would try to run outside the second she started to open the door. Carrie chuckled as Ace stared at her, clearly waiting for her to open the door, though before she could say something to her dog, Kelly answered the phone. “You awake this time? I waited an hour just in case, so you better be, I was bored.” Carrie opened the door and followed Ace outside as Kelly sarcastically laughed at her teasing. She sat down on the porch and watched Ace run around like he had been locked up for weeks, and not like he had gotten to go outside for a few minutes when she had first come home.
Kelly looked up at the clock because unless she had spent two hours trying to get her door open, Carrie couldn’t have waited an hour to call her after getting out of the studio. “Nice one, smarty. I hope the songs you have been recording are kick ass since you’ve lost the ability to tell time.” Kelly glanced at the clock again and silently laughed; there was still another hour to go before she and the band would leave to go to the club, so it had to be like six or something for Carrie.
Carrie frowned while she considered Kelly’s words. It had to be a joke. She had been home for an hour; she had already eaten and taken a shower. “I can tell time just fine, and I’ll have you know that I laid down some totally kick ass songs this week.” Carrie smiled and threw the ball in her hand across the yard since Ace had started to run circles in front of the porch to get her attention. “If you’re gonna tease me, I can just hang up and go out with some friends. I’m sure Kellie and Taylor wouldn’t make fun of me. They actually enjoy my company and invited me to go dancing.”
Kelly crossed the distance to her bed and laid down on it as she tried not to laugh. “Dang, I’m gone a week and you’ve replaced me with two girls, and one of them has my name.” Kelly knew whom Carrie was referring to; she just liked their playful banter too much to be serious. “You could have gone out with them. I’m going out with the band in like an hour to party up our last night here.” Kelly thought it might be good for Carrie to go out and have some fun. They had been texting back and forth for the past few days because Carrie’s studio time had the blonde too tired to stay up most nights to talk.
“Not all of us can have a week of promotion in paradise. Besides, I don’t really want to go out with them. They’d call me old because I’m tired and it’s eight at night.” Carrie snickered and thought about how the younger girls would have made fun of her until some boys came along. It wasn’t her fault that she had spent the week in the studio going through an emotional roller coaster because of all the different songs she had written with her favorite writers. “Feel privileged that I called you back. I even turned Tommy down when he asked if I wanted to go out.”
Kelly was trying not to laugh again, but she couldn’t hold it in when she heard Carrie shout at Ace to bring the ball back. “I was all set to aww over the fact that you called even though it would be much more fun for you if you were out with your friends, but I can’t. Care, it’s not eight for you. It’s eight here, so it has to be six in Nashville.”
Carrie stopped paying attention to Ace and checked her watch, although she already knew what time it was. She didn’t get why Kelly thought it was six. “Did the band play a joke on you by-" Carrie bit her lip when she realized what was so weird about Kelly’s words. Kelly thought they were in different time zones. “Kel, we’re in the same time zone. I know we’re not in the same country at the moment, but it’s eight where we both are.”
Kelly got up from her bed and started to go around the room so she could check all the clocks. “No it’s not.” Actually there being no time change would explain why she hadn’t had to set her clock once they had arrived, but Kelly wasn’t about to admit that. When Carrie tried to explain it to her, but couldn’t because of laughter, Kelly pouted and sat down in the closest chair. “Girl, don’t make me get Ashley on the phone. She will back me up, even if I’m wrong.”
Carrie let her laughter die down as Ace finally brought the ball back to her. “That’s what good friends do, so go on, tell her.” Carrie playfully tugged on the ball as Ace tried to keep hold of it, although she took it away after a few moments and threw it for the dog again. “She can come to your defense while Jason and I tease you the next time we’re all together. Speaking of, when are you getting in? I could be persuaded to find some free time to help Jason tease you.”
Kelly smiled at the question; she wanted to hang out with Carrie too. “We should get back some time tomorrow. So we could all do something the day after that if you want?” They were staying in Nashville in between promos spots in case anything came up; it meant they would be closer to Narvel and the rest of her management team. Kelly knew that they didn’t have to be in town at all, but she wanted to be in Nashville. “Oh, I was so thinking about having a barbecue. We could do that. Just get all our friends together for some fun.”
Carrie liked the idea of getting their people together for some down time, though she was a little hesitant to be around Ashley for too long if the other girl was still upset with her. “I can already think of two things wrong with that idea; three, if you think about the fact that you deserve a night out with someone. Why don’t you want to throw a party instead? You’re off on some romantic island with your band. You should totally throw a party and snag a girl.”
Kelly rolled her eyes as Carrie laughed at her. “One, I couldn’t throw a party for this weekend even if I wanted to, and two, you don’t know what I’ve done while I’ve been out of town. I could have so met a girl.” Kelly leaned back in her chair and settled in for a long conversation. She still wanted to hear the other reasons she shouldn’t throw a barbecue.
“Normally, I would be all for you meeting a girl, but you so didn’t try to pick anyone up. You were promoting.” Carrie chuckled at the sound of Kelly sighing. “See. I knew I was right.” Carrie had thought there was a good chance Kelly had stayed around the band or tried to rest in between the promotion. She would have done the same; it was what she had done since the end of her tour.
Kelly froze when Ashley knocked on her door and yelled that she had better open up if she was in the room. “Problem four just knocked on the door.” Kelly continued to whisper as Ashley tried the door again and threatened to go get the extra keycard from Jason. “I’m not going to make it back if Ashley finds me before we all go to the club. I kinda ran off when she tried to do my makeup.”
Carrie shook her head at Kelly’s quiet explanation. Ashley and Kelly had a strange relationship, but she wasn’t about to comment on their eccentricities. “Actually, she’s problem number two in this whole scenario. I don’t want to come to your barbecue if Ashley’s gonna beat me down or something. I mean I’m glad that the two of you are good again, but I’m not getting beat up for steak that I won’t eat. That’s problem three by the way. We won’t have food.”
Kelly tried to keep her voice down, but Carrie’s last reason was just ridiculous. “Oh please, I told you that Ashley is cool with you now. And I would so have other food than just meat. I’m not gonna throw a barbecue and not have any food for myself. You’re just acting blonde now.”
Carrie had to laugh at that claim after Kelly’s time zone incident. “Whatever, I’m not the one hiding from my best friend so she won’t put makeup on me.” Carrie’s jaw dropped when Kelly said she didn’t wear makeup. “I do too. You’re probably hiding from Ashley in the closet, so no talking.”
Kelly laughed at the comment, though she immediately clapped her hand over her mouth and ran for the balcony. “You’re gonna have to worry about me kicking your butt instead of Ashley if you make me laugh and she decides to get the keycard from Jason.” Once she was outside, Kelly let herself laugh along with Carrie now that there wasn’t any chance of Ashley hearing her. “So are you in? I totally gave solutions for all of those so called problems you came up with.”
Carrie let the silence grow as she got up from the porch and ran across the yard to get the ball from Ace. He had decided it was time to sneak up on the ball and pounce on it from any which direction instead of bringing it back to her. “I’m in, but I’m using you as a shield if Ashley forgets to be nice to me. She won’t hurt you, you’re her best friend. Me? Me, she can just decide to take out and then lie and claim it was any one of our friends.”
Kelly thought about going back into her room, or going to Ashley’s if the other girl had left, so that her friend wouldn’t tease her when she brought up the barbecue idea. “Hey what’s wrong with Matt? He would be a much better shield than me.” Kelly smiled and forgot about her idea to go minimize Ashley’s anger as Carrie laughed. “You’ll be fine. I swear. I wouldn’t let her hurt you.” Kelly sat down on the balcony and giggled as Carrie yelled at Ace to stop torturing some ball. “And you were worried about Kellie and Taylor wearing you out? Sounds like Ace did the job for them.” She tried to get as comfortable as possible as Carrie jokingly admitted that she was right. Kelly listened as Carrie filled her in on the rest of the blonde’s week, though she did decide to start making plans for another party because Carrie was right.
