Matt stumbled his way down to Jimmy’s room, where he was hoping the other two were. He had no idea what was wrong with Val, usually she took things in stride and let things wash over her. Her anger at Raven went above and beyond simple jealousy, so what was eating at her? His crotch was still radiating pain and he pretty much fell against the door, he needed an ice pack, desperately.
Jimmy opened the door sooner than he was expecting and he practically fell on the drummer. “Fuck Matt, what the hell?” he yelped just barely catching him. Matt got his legs under him and used the drummer to steady himself, “Feels like my balls got caught in a vice.” He panted. Jimmy slipped an arm around his waist and pulled him into the room, “C’mon big guy, sounds like you need to sit for a few.”
Brian was sound asleep in the closest bed so Jimmy deposited him on the furthest one next to Raven. He fell back and closed his eyes and tried to keep his breathing steady, the pain was slowly fading, but not fast enough. The bed dipped next to him and an arm slid under his neck, without opening his eyes he turned his head and rested his cheek against Jimmy’s upper arm.
“What happened? What’s wrong?” Raven whispered worriedly tracing her fingers down the visible side of his face.
“Somebody got their balls handed to them.” Jimmy cooed playfully. Matt snorted a laugh and smiled, “Fuck off.” He mumbled. Raven’s light snicker filled the quiet room. Once they were quiet again Jimmy asked, “What are we gonna do about her?”
Matt growled and gingerly sat up, he was feeling much better, “Fuck it.” He sighed, “You guys wanna get lunch?” he asked changing the subject, the sick feeling in his stomach was gone and his appetite had returned with a vengeance. Raven and Jimmy sat up and looked at the clock, it was nearly noon.
“Food sounds better than sex.” Jimmy said licking his lips. Rave leaned across Matt and swatted at him, “I’ll remember that.” She huffed. Jimmy quickly tried to backpedal, “I meant right now!” he said hastily. Matt smothered a laugh so he wouldn’t wake Brian and got up, “I’ve gotta grab a new shirt and then I’ll be ready.” He snickered, he went mostly unheard as Jimmy tried again to placate Raven, “C’mon, you’re hungry too right? Wouldn’t rather eat than have sex?”
“Jimmy, no one in their right mind would rather have food than sex.” Brian muttered before turning over and swiftly falling back asleep. Matt opened the door laughing harder and headed back to his room hoping Valary was gone.
He stood outside the door for a moment dreading who he would find inside, finally though he shook himself and unhesitatingly keyed open the door. The room was dark and still, the sheets were still mussed and the curtains still drawn. Val had probably left soon after him. Matt sighed with annoyance and once he found his bag dug out a shirt and then headed to the lobby to catch up with Raven and Jimmy.
*~*~*
He didn’t approach her again, her annoying friends were never far from her and, much as he would have enjoyed flaying the skin from their bones, he didn’t need that kind of attention. So he settled for watching and he was reminded why he had wanted her. One day she would leave the meager safety of her friends, and when she did he would finally bring her back home. And if one of the others tried to stop him…well, he would deal with them just like he had his father.
Maybe it was simple Hollywood paranoia, sleeping with your best friends and band mates could cause a serious case of it, but Raven felt like there was someone watching her. Whether it was the paparazzi or her mind playing tricks on her she couldn’t tell. Neither Matt nor Jimmy were acting any different, well, not noticeably so she was leaning more toward the hallucinating theory. Still, the itchy feeling at the back of her neck refused to leave. Even on the bus she felt like someone was watching her.
Shuddering she curled up tighter in Matt’s bunk, she had been hoping her second period wouldn’t be as bad as the first, if anything it was worse than she remembered. The guys were doing what they could to make her feel better, but she was pretty sure nothing short of a morphine drip was going to help.
“Raven,” Matt whispered crouching down near her head, “are you hungry? Jimmy and Brian are going out to get lunch.” Gentle fingers brushed her hair out of her face. She made an unintelligible sound and shook her head. She was surprised to hear Brian was going out, since the photos had hit the net he’d rarely left the bus. Reporters dogged them, online and off. He looked haggard and probably hadn’t had a full night of sleep in a month. He had been irritable and sullen and lost inside himself for just as long; Raven considered his stepping out to get lunch was a leap in the right direction. Matt pressed his forehead against hers for a second, “Call if you need me.” And then he got up and headed to the back again where he had been fiddling with his guitar for the past three days. Once he was gone she turned in to face the darkness of the bunk and tried to get back to sleep.
“Raven…Raven, wake up.” Matt whispered. She shuddered and weakly swatted at him, all she wanted to do was sleep until the show tonight. Matt caught her hand and gently stroked her knuckles, “Raven, you’re parents are here.”
With a startled sound she rolled over and almost hit Matt in the face with her head, “Sorry.” She mumbled swinging her legs out. Why were her parents here? Had something happened at home? Once she was on her feet she swayed a little but Matt caught her and led her to the front lounge with a gentle grip on her wrist.
As soon as her mother saw her, her eyes welled with tears, “Zack?” she whispered. Matt let her go and quickly retreated to the back, Raven stepped forward and hugged her mother tightly, “It’s still me mom, I promise.” She murmured. Her father looked at her like she was a ghost.
“You look just like her, just like her.” She cried holding Raven tighter. Raven looked to her father again trying to figure out what she was talking about but his face hadn’t changed. “Mom, what are you talking about?” she pulled away and looked at the older woman bewildered. Her mother coaxed her to sit on the couch next to her, her father remained standing, still staring at her.
“Zack,” she started, wiping her eyes, “we never told you because…well because it wouldn’t have made a difference if you knew or not.” She sniffled. A cold feeling settled in the pit of Raven’s stomach but she stayed quiet waiting for her mother to finish. “You had an older sister, Caitlin, she was only two years older than you. We went out one night with you to a friend’s house a few months after you were born so we could show everyone. We left Caitlin with a sitter and when we came back the sitter was tied up in the closet and Caitlin was gone. The police never found any suspects, it was just like she had never been in our home.” She started crying again and her father finally unthawed and came over to the couch so he could hug her.
“That’s why we were so angry when you called,” her father said softly, “everyone called and said your sister was on stage instead of you. We thought it was some kind of sick joke.”
Raven shook her head, not trusting herself to speak. A sister! No one had even hinted at such a thing. Although, now that she knew the circumstances of her disappearance she could see how her parents had feared losing their other child in such a mysterious way. All the rules about not going outside without one of them, constantly calling to check on her, screening her friends before she could leave the house with them; they weren’t the over bearing tyrants she’d thought they were.
“We just…we had to come up and see you,” her mother said wistfully drying her eyes, “not only to make sure you were okay, but to see what our little girl would’ve looked like all grown up.”
Raven leaned over and hugged her mother, “I’m sorry mom.” She whispered. Her mother fiercely returned the hug, “This isn’t your fault, love. None of it is, we just wanted to make sure our baby was okay.”
At that moment Jimmy and Brian decided to get back with lunch. Brian jumped on the bus like the ground was on fire and Jimmy followed a little slower. Raven’s attention shifted away from her lost sister to the crestfallen look on Brian’s face. Getting up she blocked his way to the back where he would probably go to sulk in his bunk, and hugged him tightly, “Love you Brian.” She whispered and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek. He hugged her back and nuzzled his head into her neck, tension bled from his shoulders and he relaxed against her for a moment before straightening again and pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead, “Thanks chica.” He murmured.
Jimmy looked a little worn as well but gave her and her parents a smile and wave, “Where’re Shads and Christ?” he asked holding up a couple fast food bags. She waved toward the back, he gave her a peck on the cheek and headed back to pass out the food.
“The guys are taking this well.” Her father said. Raven tucked a piece of hair behind her ear trying to control her blush, “Yeah, the first couple of days were a little rough, but we’re good now.” Very good, her parents didn’t need to know how good they were getting along. She shifted a little and wrapped an arm around her stomach. She loved seeing her parents, but she really just wanted to go back and curl up in Matt’s bunk again and go back to sleep.
A knowing look came over her mother’s face and she smoothly stood and pulled her father up, “Well, we’ve interrupted their schedule long enough honey. Let’s get back to the hotel.” She gave Raven a kiss on the cheek and a hug and stood back so her father could do the same. Once they left Raven retreated to Matt’s bunk again and quickly fell back asleep.
Soon. Soon he would take her back. The thought made him giddy with anticipation. She was going to be so happy to be back with him.
*~*~*~*
She still felt like hell but tried not to show it, the fans were as energetic as ever and she was having a lot of fun like she always did. The constant throb of pain coming from her stomach was mostly a minor irritation for the moment. Even Brian was mostly himself again. Scanning the crowd her good feeling vanished, in the second row stood the Creep. His plain brown eyes locked on hers and he smiled broadly. Raven jumped off the egoriser and darted over to Brian and somewhat hid herself behind his larger frame.
She avoided the front of the stage for the rest of the show and hid behind Matt and Brian and hoped the Creep wouldn’t be hanging out with the group of fans congregated near their bus.
“What’s up Raven?” Brian asked worriedly after he handed off his guitar. She stood close to him and scanned the crowd before answering, “That creepy guy is back, he was in the crowd staring at me.”
Brian looked over the crew and once he was satisfied everyone belonged there wrapped an arm around her shoulders and headed for the exit, “Matt’s gonna be pissed.” He muttered. Raven nodded mutely, she didn’t really care how mad Matt got, what mattered was that he was going to be looking for the guy and maybe he could smear him into the pavement.
Outside there were only a few people milling around the barricades, but when they saw them they made enough noise for a few dozen. Brian looked down at her silently asking if she was up to signing some autographs. Raven shrugged, there weren’t many and waiting a few more minutes to take some pain medication wasn’t going to kill her. She hoped at least, when her stomach rebelled with a sharp twinge of pain.
They separated, each starting at one end and working toward the middle. It didn’t take long to get through them, there were only seven or eight, but Raven was still thankful when she got to the last person. Maybe putting off the meds for another ten minutes wasn’t a good idea.
The last girl in line had blond hair streaked with black and dark blue, as soon as she saw Raven her eyes grew big a saucers, “Zacky?” she said in wonder. Raven tried to laugh her comment off, “Close, not quite.” Did she really look that much like her male self? No one else had made that mistake. The girl continued to stare at her as if she hadn’t heard, “You’ve been enchanted.”
Now Raven’s eyes widened, “What? What are you talking about?” she glanced down the line, everyone else had either wandered off or were huddled around Brian. The girl timidly held out her hand palm up, “You are Zacky aren’t you?” she asked still staring intently at her. Raven debated telling her but finally decided if she was pulling a joke she could laugh it off, hesitantly she nodded. The girl stuck her hand out further, “I’m Amelia.” She said in a quiet voice. Raven gave her a wry smile, “Raven.”
“I’m not certain,” Amelia said reaching out until she almost touched Raven’s skin, “what kind of magic this is, but it’s pretty powerful.” She pulled her hand back and looked Raven over. Magic! Raven bit back a laugh and decided the poor girl just wanted attention, “Okay, well I’m gonna head back to the bus.” She said when Brian came over to stand next to her.
As if Amelia could read her mind her coffee brown eyes met Raven’s spring green, the girl wasn’t joking and she didn’t look crazy. She looked miffed actually. “I’m not bullshitting you, someone has cast a spell on you and if it’s not reversed soon it’s going to be permanent.” Her voice held no trace of laughter or sarcasm, only a frightening sincerity. Brian slipped an arm around her waist when she swayed a little, “What?” she asked faintly. She didn’t want this body permanently. She was a guy, she had always been a guy and she wasn’t letting go of that without a fight.
“What are you talking about?” Brian asked with a slight edge to his voice. The girl stood up a little straighter and met him squarely in the eye, “Someone has enchanted Zack.” Challenge radiated from her, daring Brian to call her crazy. He didn’t take the challenge and instead looked down at Raven, she shrugged. She was feeling a little light headed and her cramps were getting worse, Brian’s arm tightened, “Um…why don’t we talk about this in a less public place.” He said looking around. Amelia looked around too, “Okay, where to?”
“Bus.” Raven muttered before Brian could suggest anything. She needed drugs, ASAP and someplace to sit. Brian jerked his head toward the bus, Amelia’s eyes lit up, “Wow, who knew being a witch came with such kick ass bonuses!” she hopped over the barricade with grace and eagerly followed behind them.
Raven took a couple aspirin and curled up on Matt’s lap muttering curses at her body. Jimmy came in and sat down next to them, Brian was on his other side, and Johnny was on the couch across from them with Amelia. She was still humming with excitement but controlled herself well enough to tell the group what she had told Brian and Raven.
She knew Matt wouldn’t believe a word of it, because that was just the way he was, Jimmy would take it all in stride and probably crack some jokes, Johnny would take everything with a grain of salt but probably believe everything, Brian seemed to be going along with what she was saying, and Raven herself believed everything.
When Amelia finished her explanation Raven was half asleep, the pain was fading and she felt warm and safe on Matt’s lap, but roused herself enough to ask the all important question, “Can you fix it?”
Amelia chewed her lip and looked her over again, “No…whoever cast the spell has a lot more experience than me.” She said finally. “But, my teacher can do it, this is about her level of skill.” She leaned forward with her elbows on her knees and her hands cupping her chin, “Actually, she might be ahead of this person, it’s a little sloppy.”
Jimmy looked her over, “Well, we haven’t been able to shower in like three days.” He said. Raven didn’t even bother to raise her head, “Brian.” She giggled when the other guitarist smacked his friend’s leg making the drummer curse and smack him back.
Amelia covered a laugh with her hand and once the two settled down again explained, “What I mean is, the spell signature is sloppy. You guys can’t see it, but it’s like there’s a really thin film of bluish light hovering over Zack—er—Raven’s skin. But the color isn’t really distributed properly, like there on her elbow it’s like whiter color, but on her cheek it’s closer to black. Like if you paint something and some places the paint is just caked on and in others the canvas is showing through.”
Jimmy was looking at her again with the same smart ass expression, “I swear to god Jimmy if you make a Willy Wonka joke I’ll smack you myself.” She warned. Jimmy bit his lip and looked away grinning.
“Can your teacher fix her tonight?” Brian asked. Amelia shook her head immediately, “She’s experienced, but this will still take some time and preparation to fix, it looks sloppy, but someone put a lot of effort into it.”
“We’ve got a two day layover next week.” Johnny said. Amelia chewed her lip again, “Yeah if I talk to her today that’ll be more than enough time.” She said after a quick moment of contemplation.”
“Okay, we’ll meet you guys after the show by the barricades.” Raven said, she felt a little silly making a date to meet a witch so they could reverse whatever spell she was under. But the threat of being stuck forever in her current body made her shudder. “Wait! You said it had to be reversed soon or it’d be permanent.” She yelped sitting up. Amelia nodded, “The sooner the better, but it’s not going to stick for another couple of weeks. We’ve got…about a month before it’s permanent.”
Raven relaxed again and rested her head on Matt’s shoulder, excitement building in her, one more week and then she’d be back to being Zacky. She wasn’t going to be like this forever.
