Biting down nervously at her fingernails Carrie glanced back down at the only thing currently separating herself from Kelly – the handle attached to the door. Who knew a damn door knob could be so intimidating.
Just do it already, Carrie.
Taking a deep breath she finally lowered her hand from her mouth and reached out for the knob, twisting it gradually as she pushed on the door with her body weight. If she thought she had been nervous beforehand, that feeling had intensified the second she caught sight of Kelly on the bed.
“Hey,” Kelly greeted softly, carefully pushing herself up straighter on the bed, “you made it back.”
With a nod of her head Carrie cleared her throat and quietly pushed the door shut behind her before slowly crossing the room to join her wife.
“Yeah, sorry I kind of just split the other day, I wasn’t sure…”
Kelly offered her a genuine smile. “No need for apologies,” she assured her. “You can sit down.” She pointed out with a smirk, motioning towards the empty chair beside the bed when she noticed Carrie remained still.
“Oh, right, thanks.” She replied, lowering herself down onto the chair.
Kelly nervously sucked her bottom lip into between her teeth for a second before releasing it and glancing over at Carrie again.
“Where’s Lyra?”
Carrie shifted in the uncomfortable chair and clasped her hands together. “Your mom told you about her,” she stated with a grin and slight chuckle.
“Yeah, she’s adorable. But then again she looks like me, so naturally…” Kelly trailed off as she and Carrie shared a laugh.
“She definitely takes after you, in more ways than just your looks, Kel. The girl is only two and already can give you a run for your money in the talking department, my goodness. And she loathes clothes. Your mom is constantly telling me she’s like you as a child all over again.”
Kelly laughed harder at the image of Lyra. “I can’t wait to meet…see…her.” She corrected.
“But,” Carrie began, venturing back to the topic of where their daughter was, “she’s back at our house with your mom and the girls. I think Jason may have headed back too by now though, I’m not sure.”
Kelly smiled a little to herself. “Our house…” She whispered, testing the words out loud.
“Yeah, I didn’t want you to be completely overwhelmed and I didn’t want her getting too confused although she has a general idea of what’s going on.”
She nodded in understanding. “That was very thoughtful of you. You seem like you’re a wonderful mother, Carrie.”
Carrie forced a half smile and muttered a soft “thank you.” I've been far from a wonderful mother and wife. God Carrie, just tell her that. Open your damn mouth and tell her things were far from perfect before the accident. Grow some damn balls and speak the hell up already.
“Oh,” Carrie mumbled suddenly, fishing inside of her purse and pulling out a stack of photos, “She did send me on my way with these for you.”
Kelly accepted the pictures from Carrie’s hand and immediately started going through them.
“She wanted to help out…she thought that maybe the pictures would help you remember some things.” Carrie added.
She glanced up from the photos for a second and looked over to Carrie with a smile. “Aw would you thank her for me?”
“Of course.”
Kelly shifted on the bed, wincing slightly. Carrie perked up in her chair, moving quickly to make sure she was alright. “Are you okay?”
Kelly nodded. “Yeah, I’m good thanks.” She smiled, sliding the current top picture behind the stack and moving onto another photo.
“I’ve actually been having these little flashes or whatever…nothing current though, just like stuff from years ago.” She revealed, growing closer to end of the stack of photos.
“Really, like what?”
She stopped flipping through the pictures when she reached the first one again. “Just things like when I first got here for the duet with you and stuff, so I’m guessing other things will start to come back to me.” She shrugged, turning partially on the bed to set the photos on the stand beside her.
Carrie moved quickly and took them from her hands. “I got it; we don’t need you straining anymore.”
Kelly shifted back to her original position on the bed and smiled at Carrie. “Thanks.”
“That’s great about your memory, though. I heard you get to get out of here soon and your mom is planning on taking you back home so that will probably help more too in the memory department.”
“I hope so, this is just so damn frustrating, you know?”
Carrie nodded. “Oh, I almost forgot. I brought something for you, too.” She said, digging inside of her purse again.
Kelly watched her pull a platinum chain out of her purse that had what she guessed was her wedding band dangling from it.
“Your mom said you asked about it so I thought I’d bring it back to you…I mean, it is yours and I kind of just took it. I put it on the chain since your fingers are swollen and you can’t really wear it but—”
Her rambling is adorable. “Would you put it on me?” She questioned softly.
“Of course I will.” Carrie replied, setting her purse down onto the tiled floor and pushing up from the chair.
She moved closer to the bed and immediately went to helping Kelly sit up more comfortably without hurting herself.
“You’re so stubborn.” She laughed, swooping her wife’s hair from behind her back and casually draping it over her shoulder.
Kelly let out a soft laugh in return as Carrie slid the chain around her neck, her fingertips grazing the sensitive skin of her neck and causing chills to run down her spine. She bit down lightly on her bottom lip to refrain from letting Carrie hear her breath hitch and finally released it along with a sigh when the other girl finished clasping the necklace around her.
Carrie’s fingers stilled as she clasped the lock in place, her hands not immediately lowering from her wife’s neck. “There, all done.” She said, clearing her throat and pulling away before the ache she had inside to kiss Kelly’s skin took over her.
Instantly Kelly brought her hand up to touch the wedding band. Gently she pinched it between her fingers and turned her head towards Carrie.
“Thanks.” She whispered, their eyes locking intently.
Carrie continued to hold their gaze. “No problem.”
“So um, are you and Lyra coming back to Texas with us?” She wondered.
Carrie blinked and slowly lowered herself back down onto the chair. “I wouldn’t have it any other way…I mean, only if you wanted us to. I really want this to be as easy and as comfortable for you as it possibly can and—“
Kelly chuckled and reached out for Carrie’s hand. Cute, she’s doing that rambling thing again. And I thought I was bad. “I’d like for you to come with us.”
Carrie allowed her hand to settle into her wife’s and instantly felt herself burst inside from the contact.
“Then yes, we’re coming with you guys.” And finally deciding to give in to that previous ache she had before Carrie leaned forward and lifted Kelly’s hand towards her lips, placing a delicate kiss against it.
