Life Goes On(Pt8)
Joe nervously paced the floor as Evelyn read his journal. She would occasionally look up at him or laugh out loud at something he wrote or mumbled comments. She was surprised when Joe sat a bag of Chinese food on the table in front of her.
“I…I didn’t know what you liked, so I ordered a bit of everything.”
“Thank you.” She told him. Evelyn hadn’t even realized that he called anyone, she was so caught up in reading. She took a container of noodles and settled back in the chair and read the rest. A short time later she closed the book softly and lay it in her lap, fingering the soft leather bound book. So many thoughts and question raced through her mind that she didn’t know where to begin.
It was true, Joe was a vampire, but still her mind wouldn’t register that they were real. He had chased her through the woods, even saw his eyes in a shade of yellow that she had never seen in a human before. She vaguely remembered the pain in her neck when they were together. And after reading his journal, she could feel the compassion in his words. The way in which he wrote about his wife and children, it showed a man that loves them very much. What surprised her even more is that he was bi-sexual in a sense. He wrote a great deal about Rick Savage. The deep feelings he had for him and the sorrow in his words of what he had done to him, that same night she had meet Joe.
“Joe.” Evelyn turned to him as he looked out the window into the dark night.
“What?” he spun around to face her.
“Why don’t you come and sit down?”
Joe hesitantly went over and sat on the couch far enough away as not to cause her to fear him any more than she already does.
“Well, I guess the first thing I want to know is, are you really a vampire?”
Joe was staring at the floor. “I can show you if you like.”
“I saw a little last night and I wasn’t sure what you were after you flew me back to the car. Ok, so show me. Then I’ll believe you more.”
Joe let the vampire surge to the surface and slowly looked at her. Ready to bolt from the house if she screamed or ran from the room.
Evelyn gasped, her hand went to her chest. 'So it is true…but it can’t be.’ In the full light of the room he sat there staring at her. The look of acceptance in his yellowish eyes. Evelyn took a deep breath to try and calm her nerves, looking at him more closely. Even now he was handsome, that’s what drew her to meet him last night. Evelyn had to admit that he was very erotic this way and his voice when he spoke caused an unfamiliar tingling in her.
“Please don’t be afraid…I’m not going to hurt you.” With that he looked away and pushed the vampire back down.
Evelyn found her voice. “I…I had no idea that vampires existed. And you’re not the ugly monster that the TV portrays.”
Joe didn’t look at her. “I didn’t believe in them either. Are…are you still frightened of me?”
“I’m not sure really. You sound different than the way you were the last night and your very nervous, like a school boy.”
“I just want you to see who I am…not what I’m hiding inside….nothing like that…I’ve never done that to any woman I’ve meet…never.”
Evelyn glanced down at the book. “Do you have pictures with you of the people you mentioned here. I’d really like to put names with faces.”
“Um…yes I do.” Joe pulled out his wallet and was startled when she stood up, then came over to sit beside him.
“I’m trying and I guess this is the first step. To be close, regain my trust of you.”
Joe frowned, "I know all about trust, something that is hard to find amongst mortals." he smiled then and opened his wallet and gave it to her.
Evelyn looked at the first picture. “Is this Rebecca?”
“Yes.” Joe answered with sadness in his voice.
“She’s beautiful. I can see why you loved her so much.”
”I didn’t fall in love with her looks, but what she was inside. Rebecca had a way about her, so understanding, loving, she never judged me on my mistakes. She loved me for who I was before and after I came across.”
”And you still miss her.”
“Everyday.” he said softly, still looking at the picture.
Evelyn looked up at him, yes it was there, in his eyes, everything he had just said and more. This woman, Rebecca, his wife of so many years still held his heart. Evelyn turned to the next picture.
“Amber and your son Thomas.” She knew that without him confirming it. Amber looked just like her mother, but the same air about her as Joe. Thomas spitting image of Joe, even in this picture she could see the driving passion and determination in his eyes. “Your children are beautiful Joe.”
”Thank you. They are everything to me, all I have left of Rebecca, other than my memories. Someday when you have children of your own, you can understand what love and joy they can bring to your life.”
“For you it’s different, you were told you couldn’t have children.”
“That’s right. I would never change that, even after all the pain, heartache, aggravation they have caused me since they were born. I would do anything…anything for them.”
Evelyn knew where they got their persistence from….Joe. After all he did persist that she talk to him. She flipped to the next picture. The intense blue eyes were the first thing that caught her attention. The light brown highlighted hair framed his flawless face, to his full lips.
“That’s Rick….Sav.”
Evelyn nodded her head. So this is the man that he wrote so much about. What was it he said, a thorn in his side, his best friend, his lover. The only man that he ever had an intimate relationship with. The one that brought him over into the world of darkness. He did have the sex appeal that would draw anyone to him and she had to admit, he was very handsome.
Still looking at the picture of Sav she broke the silence. “What happened in Australia between the two of you?” She felt Joe shift beside her. “If it bothers you to talk about. I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have asked.”
“No it’s ok…I want to tell you. Sav he uh….left me….he said it was all a game to get away from Nick. It was hard to stand there and listen to his cold words. It almost killed me after he left. It was suppose to be forever…at least that’s what he said before he brought me across. I guess his love for me wasn’t as strong as I thought.”
”But he came back and you forgave him and his deception.”
“My love was stronger.” Joe said softly looking down at his hands. “And I still believed in him. You can’t just throw away the friendship we had, the time we shared, tragedies we went through together…the love. Not over night anyway.” He grew quite a minute. “It’s been a long time since I had a woman for a companion for any length of time. Sav was there to take care of those needs…you know the…the…” ”Sexual ones.” Evelyn finished for him.
“Yes…sometimes though it wasn’t enough, I needed more. I would go out and find a woman spend some time with her and break it off.”
“Is that why you sought me out last night Joe?”
“Yes...no…I mean…I don’t know.” He suddenly stood and went back to stare out the window. “This may sound crazy to you, but I see an inner strength in you, tasted it in your blood. Compassion for those in need, the will to forgive, a deeper passion for those around you. You can and are a caring, loving person with a strong will to life. And to think I almost took that from you….well it’s hard for me to accept that in myself.”
“But you didn’t Joe. And for what it’s worth, from what I’ve read. You’re not that person I saw last night. Troubled a little maybe, having a hard time dealing with what you did. But you came here tonight to amend that. You trusted me enough to let me read your journal.”
Joe was still looking out of the window when he felt her light touch on his arm. He looked down at her as she moved to stand in front of him.
“Now that I know a little bit about you. I find you very intriguing. And I like to get to know more about you, your family and what it’s like to be a vampire.”
“I would like that very much Evelyn. I’ll tell you anything you want to know.”
Her smile light up her face and Joe returned it with one of his own.
“Come…join me back on the couch.”
Evelyn refreshed her drink and they settled on the couch. She asked Joe many questions and he answered them quickly and honestly. He told her everything about his past, holding nothing back. Evelyn listened to everything he said, laughed with him. Even shed a tear with him when he spoke about the day Rebecca died, the grief and pain in his voice even now. Joe bared his soul for her to see like an open book. She was astonished when he told her about the band Def Leppard. She had never heard of them and Joe promised that he would bring her some of the music. Joe told her of how much he missed playing the music, touring the world with his band mates. The others had grown to old to do that now, but he had kept in touch with them all these years.
“So, even when the band broke apart, you remained a band of brothers.”
”Oh yes, in every since of the word. We still write music, maybe record a few things or write it for some one else. It’s hard to give up something that is in your blood.”
Evelyn stifled a yawn and Joe saw it.
”I’m sorry….” he started and noted that the sun was peeking over the horizon. “I….I didn’t mean to keep you up all night.”
“It’s alright, I’ve enjoyed talking to you. I’m more relaxed and at ease around you.”
Joe looked nervously again at the window. “And in doing so, I’ve managed to trap myself here for the day.”
“Oh….why?” Evelyn looked thoughtful. “So that’s true also.”
”Yes…I can only tolerate the sun to a degree.” Joe stood up getting ready to leave. “I’ll just have to find a place outside
quickly before it gets higher.”
“Joe…um you don’t have to do that…I mean, I have a spare bedroom you could sleep in.”
”I don’t want to impose on you more than I already have.”
“You haven’t really. Stay please. I know more about you now. Enough to know that you’re not like that.”
Joe reluctantly agreed. He followed her to the spare bedroom and went about closing the curtains and putting heavier blanket over the window to keep the sun out. Evelyn told him good night and went to her room.
Joe laid awake, listening to the quiet of the house. He didn’t’ want to be alone today and finally rose and found Evelyn’s room. He crept in and went about blocking the sun from the window. Shedding his clothes he crawled in the bed with her, scooting to spoon her to his chest.
Evelyn’s eyes flew open and she turned to find Joe staring at her. “What are you…”
”Shh….it’s alright, I didn’t want to sleep alone. The warmth of your body feels good..g4o back to sleep.”
Her heart pounded in her chest at how close he was. She could feel the coolness of his skin through her thin nightgown and the tightness in which his arm drew her closer. His breath blew across her neck causing goose bumps to rise.
“You feel good in my arms.” She heard him whisper, then placed a soft kiss on her shoulder.
‘It does feel good.’ Evelyn thought, she wiggled a bit to get comfortable and closed her eyes again. The grip that he had on her lessoned and she sensed that Joe had already gone to sleep. Finally giving into her own need for sleep Evelyn drifted away, her back snug against Joe.
