STEFAN AND BRIAN.
Brian had suffered his fair share of abuse in the past. From classmates to family to total strangers… what he couldn’t handle now was another confrontation with these boys, however. “Please, Stef, don’t leave me here.” He whispered.
Stef was visibly upset, looking around for a way to escape, trying to think of how they could possibly get out of this. There was no way over or under the cubical walls. They’d both have to go out the way they came in. Quickly pulling his clothes on and trying to dry his hair with his hands, Stefan looked down at Brian who looked as though he was trying to hold back tears. Goddamn it Stef, you should have known this was a bad idea. Start thinking with your brain, not your…
“Oi, faggot! You in here, pretty boy?” one of the boys called out. Brian could hear them walking around, opening lockers, slamming them, opening changing cubicles, slamming them. “Come out, come out wherever you are!”
“Stef!” Brian hissed. “What are we going to do?!” he still hadn’t put his clothes back on, afraid of making too much noise.
“Stef hurry up!”
“Yeah!” Ryan laughed. “Help us find the fairy.”
By this time Stefan was almost dressed, just doing up his tie. “Don’t worry,” he assured Brian, looking into his eyes. “I’ll make sure they don’t find you.” And with those words, and a deep breath, he unlocked and opened the cubical door, just enough to fit his slender body through, closing it after him. “You guys didn’t have to wait for me!” he called to nobody in particular.
“Where’d that cocksucker go?” Matt wondered aloud, not paying attention.
Stef shrugged. “He must have just left his stuff here. Come on, let’s go.” He tried pushing the boys out, wanting them to leave as soon as possible to avoid a confrontation with Brian. That was the last thing he wanted.
“Heeeey!” Ryan said, stopping and pointing at Stef’s neck. “Someone’s been getting some action!”
Stef put his hand to where Ryan was pointing. Oh shit, Brian had given him a hickey. He could only hope that his friends wouldn’t remember it hadn’t been there an hour ago.
“Who’s the lucky girl?” Matt teased.
“Nobody special, just uh… some chick I picked up last night.”
‘God Stef is a bad liar,’ Brian thought to himself. ‘they won’t buy that.'
“You need a girlfriend, bro. A real one. Popular guy like you shouldn’t have any problem.”
“Yeah, sure…” Brian heard the voices fade as they left the change rooms, breathing a sigh of relief.
STEFAN.
He hated it when his “friends” tried talking to him about girls. It was so hard to fake interest. “Look, I’m just not interested in a relationship at the moment,” he lied. “I like my freedom.”
“Yeah,” Matt said, clapping him on the back. “But if you have a girlfriend you can have that sweet thing whenever you want, man! Think of the possibilities. And besides, there are plenty of girls here who would date you.”
“Yeah, well-“
“I’ll find you one.”
Stef looked at him, mouth opened. This couldn’t be good. “That’s really not necessary, Matt.”
“Don’t worry, she’ll be hot.” He winked as they walked into the main building. It was then that Stefan realized they were one person short.
“Where’s Ryan?” he asked.
Matt smirked. “Went to find that poofta.”
“What!?”
“He was obviously hiding in there somewhere. Went back to give him what he deserves.”
Running back to the change rooms, Stef didn’t know what he was going to do once he got there. But he wouldn’t let them use Brian for a punching bag. Not again.
“What are you doing?” Matt called, running after him. He was no match for Stefan’s long legs.
BRIAN.
After waiting a few minutes to make sure they were gone, Brian put his gym clothes back on. They stuck to his wet body, but thankfully his uniform outside would be dry. He opened the cubical, dragging his feet when he was met by a familiar face.
“Sup, loser?” Ryan grinned, blocking Brian’s way.
Oh shit, Stef wasn’t here to protect him this time. He had no chance against this boy who was at least three times his size. “Leave me alone, Ryan.” He said, with fake confidence. His classmate just laughed.
“Or what? You’ll blow me? Fucking little fag,” Brian backed up as Ryan opened the door further, trapping him inside the shower cubical. “go back to wherever it was you came from. You’re not wanted here.”
“Just leave me alone!” it took all Brian’s self control to stop his voice quivering. He was sick of being a victim. “I’ve never done anything to you, piss off!”
“Ooh, you’re a fighter. I see your face is looking a bit red there, freak. How about we even it up on the other side?”
Brian didn’t know what to do. He lifted his arms to defend himself from the fist pelting towards him. He was pushed off his feet and back into the shower, drenching his shorts. Cowering in the corner, he looked up as the larger boy stood over him, grinning. “This is what we do to freaks.” Ryan raised his fist again, his other hand holding Brian by the collar of his singlet. Brian braced himself for another hit, but much to his surprise…
“Stop!” Stef yelled, sprinting into the change rooms. He grabbed Ryan from behind, forcing him to drop Brian back in the shower. “What the fuck are you doing!?”
“What the fuck, Stef? Shit, calm the fuck down!” Matt yelled, finally catching up.
“I told you guys to leave him alone! Jesus!” he held his hand out to help Brian, who was still shivering in the corner, up.
“Stef, what is wrong with you? Why do you care so much about this freak? You never had a problem in the past when we’d give shit to the weirdos. Hell, you even helped!”
Brian saw Stef’s face sink, shame drowning his beautiful eyes. “Look, that was the past. Just grow the fuck up.”
“You know you don’t have to defend him just because you’re doing some fruity music project together.” Matt grumbled. It was then that Brian realized who the ringleader of the group was. All the other boys he’d seen Stef hanging around with, at least half a dozen, looked up to him.
“Yeah I do. Without him, I fail, ok? Just drop it at least for now. The two of us should go to music class anyway.”
“Whatever man.” Ryan rolled his eyes, obviously disappointed. “You got lucky, faggot.” He spat.
As they were leaving, Matt yelled back, “Stef make sure you turn up at recess. I’m finding you a total babe!” Their laughs echoed throughout the change rooms even as they walked further away.
Brian looked up at Stef who was clearly shaken. He looked as though he was going to cry. “Stef… are you ok?”
“No. It’s my fault, again!” Stefan stepped away from the shower area and over to the lockers, resting his head against one of them, eyes closed. “I do nothing but hurt you!” he slammed his fist into a locker, causing a sizeable dent to appear. Brian cringed, it must have hurt.
“No you don’t. You’re the opposite of that. You’re my guardian angel.” He smiled. “Look, it’s not that bad anyway. He only hit me once and it wasn’t that hard, I just slipped.”
“Once too many,” Stef turned to look down at his friend, still wet and bruised. “I said I wouldn’t let them hurt you.”
Brian bit his lip and walked over to his school clothes, pulling off his wet ones. “I can’t rely on you all the time.”
“But this is my fault! If it weren’t for me, you wouldn’t have been in there.” Stefan replied sadly.
“I can make my own choices, Stef. I chose to go in there with you.”
“I…” Brian could see tears welling up in his eyes as he sat down on the bench. “I just don’t want anyone to hurt you.”
STEFAN.
“Stef, you were right yesterday. We can’t be friends at school.” Brian said sadly, buttoning up his shirt.
Stefan knew it was true, but it hurt him just the same. It wasn’t safe for them to hang about, not when his douchebag friends were always so close by. “Do you still… want…” he couldn’t finish the sentence. Who was he kidding? He didn’t deserve Brian.
Much to his surprise, he felt soft arms wrap around him, and quickly let go.
“Yes. I do. But I don’t want you to have to suffer for me. And I sure don’t want to get hit again. Look,” he let out a small sigh, almost completely dressed now, this wasn’t the conversation they should be having, especially not at school. “we’ll do music together and we can be ‘friends’ or whatever you want outside of school, but that’s all.”
Stef looked up. Wait, did he mean..? “So, just friends?”
Brian smiled, swinging his bag over his shoulder. “We’ll see. I’ll be in music in a minute, need to fix this first.” He added, pointing to his face and heading for the door.
‘Stefan, what have you done now?!’ Stef buried his head in his hands, he seemed to be doing that a lot this week. All these problems would disappear if he would just man up and tell everyone he was… no. He couldn’t do that.
BRIAN.
Sitting in music class waiting for Stef, Brian felt refreshed. He’d redone his make-up and although his face was stinging, he didn’t feel nearly as bad as he’d expected. Plus, he’d just remembered they had a half day on Fridays. School terms starting on a Tuesday always threw his week out of wack.
Stef walked into class late and Brian called him over into the corner where he was sitting, waiting with a guitar. “I have a new song.” He smiled. To his surprise, Stefan didn’t smile back. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.”
‘Still bad at lying.’ Brian thought to himself. Oh well. “Want to hear it?”
“Sure, but let’s go outside.
Music class came and went, and as usual, they got very little done.
“We should work on this on the weekend.” Stef said, just before leaving for recess.
Brian smiled. “Work?”
“No, I mean really work. We only have seven weeks left to do it. Five o’clock at my place tomorrow?”
“Sure, works for me.”
STEFAN.
Stefan headed off begrudgingly to the cafeteria where he knew his friends would be waiting for him, hoping Matt had forgotten about his threat to find him a girlfriend. Unfortunately, he had not.
“Yo, Stef! Congrats, buddy!” Eric yelled, smacking him on the back.
“What?” Stef was confused. Before he could ask someone else what was going on, he felt a pair of glossy lips pressed up against his. These weren’t like Brian’s though. They tasted wrong. Stef pulled away quickly. “Who…?” it was Mandy, a girl from his class. Oh shit, was SHE supposed to be his girlfriend!?
“Hi Stef,” she said, batting her eyelids, looking up at him. “Matt just asked me out for you! And of course I said yes!”
‘Oh no. What have you gotten yourself into now, Stef?’
“Isn’t it great?” Matt laughed, grabbing the new ‘couple’ in a group hug. “She’s hot, you’re the stud of the school, match made in heaven!” Several people laughed and applauded. Stefan couldn’t think of anything worse.
“Uh, listen, Mandy…” he started quietly.
“What’s wrong?” Ryan yelled out from a table on the other side of the room. “You’d have to be a total faggot not to want her!” Laughter broke out again, and suddenly Stef completely forgot what he was going to say. This was turning out to be a terrible day.
BRIAN.
Thank goodness it was the weekend. Brian needed time to recover. His first four days at his new school had been amongst the best and worst he’d ever experienced. Tossing his bag on his bed, Brian collapsed into his desk chair and opened IM on his computer. Almost instantly, a message popped up.
Mr. O says: Brian?
Bri: Hey Stef.
Mr. O says: Are you ok?
Bri says: Yeh Im fine. U feeling better?
Mr. O says: No. I have to go to some stupid party 2morro
Bri says: What do u mean u have to?
Mr. O says: Its kinda a big deal, Bri. Every1 is gonna be there
Bri says: I won’t be
Mr. O says: U know what I mean
Mr. O says: Besides, Mandy already told every1 wed be there
Bri says: Who is Mandy?
Mr. O says: My girlfriend apparently
Bri says: AHAHAHAHAHAAHAHA na seriously?
Mr. O says: I wish I was kidding
Bri says: So this means we can’t do work tomorrow?
Mr. O says: Yeah sorry
Bri says: So ur ditching me for ur fake girlfriend and a bunch of arseholes?
Mr. O says: Brian…
Mr. O says: Don’t say it like that
Brian couldn’t believe what he was reading. This had to be a joke.
Bri says: Please tell me ur not serious Stef!
Mr. O says: Im serious Brian!!!!!!
Bri says: So we can only fuck in secret and nobody can kno we r even friends, but youll go prancing around town with some girl even tho ur GAY just to impress some ppl u don’t even like!?!?! Did I miss something???
Mr. O says: Im sorry Bri. That’s just how it is
Bri says: Fuck u
Mr. O says is now offline.
Brian threw his keyboard off his desk. This wasn’t fair. Why did Stef think he could just do whatever he wanted? Use Brian for his own sexual gratification and then pose around with some GIRL? Fuck him, Brian thought. I can have plenty of fun without him. Searching through his closet, he found exactly what he was looking for.
