Part 9 – Summerboy 2:
“We’ll still have the summer after all”
- Lady GagaFive years later...
The bright sun shone through the windows, creating its very own rainbow as the man sitting at his computer at work stared longingly out of it. He watched the people in the park below sprawl themselves across their blankets as they started to soak in the start of summer’s warm rays. The man envied them as he was cooped up inside at his desk, perspiring slightly due to the lack of air conditioning.
This warm weather brought back so many memories, both good and bad. Each summer seemed to get hotter and it pained his heart each time he thought of his original home, California. His family had probably forgotten he even existed anymore, lack of contact on both parts made that painfully clear. Not that it really bothered him so much anymore. He had his own family in New York that made the pain almost disappear.
When he thought of California now, he thought only of one other; Brian.
Brian was perfect in every way possible. He was very attractive, incredibly charming, had an amazing sculpted body and was very caring. The man sighed as he remembered all the time and heartache he had spent on him. But it had been just over five years since he had last spoken to Brian. It became apparent that neither of the two men wanted to be the one to make the first move, both worried about appearing too desperate.
“Zack, what are you doing?” A strong, deep voice broke his thoughts as he turned to see his good friend and newly appointed supervisor Matt standing there, arms folded tightly across his chest.
“Sorry, just got a little distracted.” Zack mumbled as he looked away from the other man and started to concentrate heavily on his work, trying to catch up on entering the data that he should have been doing hours ago. An icon flashed up down the bottom of the screen, indicating that he’d just received a personal email. He checked quickly over his shoulder and almost stopped breathing when he saw Matt still standing there, waiting impatiently. “When are we getting this air-conditioning fixed? I’m sweating like a pig here!” He laughed awkwardly but Matt looked anything but amused.
“Zack.” He said shortly. “You know what company policy on receiving personal emails is. I suggest you close that program immediately unless you wish to jeopardize your employment.”
“Yes, sorry, sir.” Zack said quickly as he closed the email, checking over his shoulder and seeing that Matt was finally gone, he took a deep breath before concentrating solely on his work, knowing he couldn’t risk being caught doing something he wasn’t supposed to be again.
The rest of his day at work seemed to go on forever. His heart yearned to be outside instead of mindlessly entering data into the computer but he put up with it, realizing immediately that without this job he wouldn’t be in the financial position he was in. The thought of his next paycheck seemed to give him the motivation and concentration to finish off the rest of the day.
He’d completely forgotten about the email he’d received while working until he arrived at Matt’s house later that evening. “Hey, sorry about before, you know I was just doing my job, right?” Matt asked hopefully as he took a sip of his beer.
“It’s okay, I understand.” Zack said with a slight smile.
“So who was that email from anyway?” Matt asked, perhaps a little too excited.
“I dunno. I forgot to look.” Zack said absentmindedly as he pulled out his BlackBerry and logged onto his email account. He only had to wait a moment for it to load before he felt himself stop breathing for a second when he saw that he had an email from Brian. “It’s from Brian.” He said softly as he hovered over the small icon, warily deciding whether or not he was going to read it, his heart racing.
“Well, open it.” Matt said with a grin as he finished his bottle of beer, standing up as he went to go fetch another one.
Zack clicked open on his phone and waited what felt like an eternity but was really only a few seconds, his heart beat increasing severely as he read the small text on the screen.
Dear Zack;
I should have known that you wouldn’t be the first to contact me and that you wouldn’t return to California without me first asking. I’ve had a lot of time to think about and assess what it is I want in life. I know that I made the stupidest mistake by letting you walk out of my life five years ago all because I wasn’t ready to settle down with someone. The truth is, I still don’t know if that’s what I want. But I know that I want you. This summer it will be six years since I first met you. The best three weeks of my life. I don’t know if we are really meant to be anything other then each other’s summer flings, but I would love to see if that amazing spark we have it still there. The offer is wide open for you to come stay this summer for as long as you like but if you choose not to, then I will just remember you as the best I’ve ever had. Please let me know sooner rather then later. Brian.Zack stared at his phone in his hands for a few minutes, reading the email over and over again. He thought about what the consequences would be if he did go to California one last time to see Brian. He couldn’t deny that his heart skipped a beat when he thought about seeing Brian, let alone touching him. A smile crept over his face as he remembered Brian’s smell and that cheeky little smirk he got on his face.
But then he realized that maybe he shouldn’t be doing that.
His heart sank as he looked at the email through a negative light and as he read it another couple of times, the underlying context of the email became clear that Brian wanted to have sex with him one last time. He sighed as he realized that even after five years that Brian still hadn’t changed and was still heavily into the clubbing scene and being a bachelor.
He didn’t know if he was willing to put his heart though all the torment of it again.
“What’d he say?” He heard Matt’s voice break his train of thought.
“He wants me to go see him.” He said plainly, finally tearing his eyes away from the screen to look at his best friend.
“What are you going to do?” Matt asked as he took another sip of beer.
“I would love to see him one more time.” Zack answered as he watched his friend’s face turn to a look of disapproval before he added, “But he doesn’t say that he wants something permanent from me.”
“Zack, you guys broke up for a reason.” Matt said bluntly. “If he isn’t willing to give you what you want then you shouldn’t even be considering going to meet him. He’s only go to break your heart again if you do.”
“Yeah, I guess your right.” Zack sighed as he looked at the screen on his phone intently.
“Come on, dinner’s ready.” Matt said offhandedly as he stood up once more.
“Yeah, yeah, I’ll be there in a minute.” Zack replied, earning a concerned look from his friend who left the room.
Zack knew he was being naughty as he hastily clicked the reply button on the email and began typing a response.
Dear Brian;
After some thought, I have decided to decline your offer of coming to California for the summer. I found it difficult to finally decide not to but according to your words, it seems you still don’t want the same things I want. I don’t mean to be cruel but I can’t put myself through all the pain if it’s not even going to be worth anything. I hope that one day you will want what I do but until that day I see no point in wasting your time as you try to figure it out. I doubt I’ll ever meet anyone that’s half as amazing as you are but I can always smile, knowing that even if we don’t spend the rest of our lives together, we have the memories. We’ll still have the summer after all. Zack.Zack clicked send before discarding the phone onto the couch as he headed towards the dining room where his dinner was waiting. He smiled to himself as he sat down at the table. He knew that while he was bound to have regrets about turning Brian down, he knew that his decision would be worth it in the end.
He still had his memories, after all.
The end.
