Part 9:
The past few months for Zack had been some of the hardest he had ever had to face. While he was still inside the hospital, he had been meeting with an eating disorder councilor almost every day for hour long sessions and had been attending an eating disorder meeting group that involved the majority of the people on his ward, slightly surprised that it was almost half and half for male and female participants. He continued doing this even after he left the sanctuary of the hospital.
He’d also been meeting with a nutritionist twice a week and had been keeping a diary to show her exactly what he’d been eating. She was satisfied that his calorie intake had dramatically increased over the last few weeks, his daily intake now a much healthier intake for someone of his age and height.
But as soon as he stepped outside of the hospital’s doors, old habits started to creep back into his life.
He still found, though, that he sometimes couldn’t help weighing himself at least a few times a week, his heart plummeting when he’d see his weight slowly start to creep up on the set of mechanical bathroom scales he had still hiding in his house. And he couldn’t help but head straight for the bathroom and force his stomach contents up into the white porcelain bowl.
He knew that what he was doing was bad, but he couldn’t stop. His weight still controlled his life, even after his stay inside the hospital. But he knew that he was never going to get any better when he continued to blatantly lie to his therapist about his dirty little habit.
The hardest thing but, was to try and hide it from Brian.
He had just spent the past thirty minutes bingeing on most of the junk food inside his house, the empty packets of chips and cookies were among some of the carnage. He looked at the clock and cringed, knowing he had barely ten minutes before Brian would be walking through the door.
His heart was racing as he ran to the bathroom and after forcing his fingers roughly down his throat, watched as the contents of his stomach landed in the bowl beneath him. He repeated the process another several times before he was certain that all of it was now gone and out of his system, ignoring the blood that mixed in with the vomit.
He had just finished brushing his teeth when he heard the doorbell ring. He tossed his ratty old toothbrush back into its holder and opened the door, satisfied that it was only Brian standing there. “Hey.” He said, behind a fake smile.
“Hey, I brought lunch over.” Brian said with a large smile as he held up two bags of take away food that was no doubt covered in grease.
“I just brushed my teeth.” Zack muttered as the taller man forced his way through the doorway and into the large living room while he closed the door.
“I’m not taking ‘no’ for an answer.” Brian replied as he placed the bags of food onto the coffee table. “Eat, now.”
Zack let out an inward sigh before taking his seat on his plush leather lounge next to the slightly taller lead guitarist. He opened his bag and couldn’t help the obvious sound of disappointment when he saw a greasy burger and a carton of fries sitting at the bottom of the bag.
He turned to Brian with a look of absolute disgust on his face. “I can’t eat this.”
“There’s nothing wrong with some junk food every now and then, Zack.” Brian tried to reason as he took a large bite out of his own burger, ignoring when most of its filling landed on the wrapping below. He turned to look at Zack, who was still staring at the burger as if it was about to eat him. “It’s not going to hurt you.”
“It’s going to make me fat.” Zack responded without even a second thought, his arms tightening their grip across his stomach.
Brian let out a groan, placing his almost half eaten burger onto its wrapping. “Zack, you told me that your weight wasn’t the most important thing anymore.”
“It’s not.” Zack replied quickly, although it was an obvious lie. “But I don’t want to be fat.”
“But you’re not!” Brian tried to protest. “If you don’t eat the food I’ve brought you, I will personally ring Dr. Cross and Dr. Riley and tell them that you are now refusing to eat and they will not be happy with you.”
Zack’s eyes narrowed slightly before he turned his attention to his burger that was sitting in front of him. He reached down slowly before he carefully unwrapped the burger. “Fine.” He grumbled as he pressed it up to his mouth and took a smile bite out of it.
He chewed the food in his mouth, enjoying the taste of the cheap meat, processed cheese and the slightly salty tomato sauce that were all inside the sugary bun. He took another bite out of the burger, this time a lot bigger and he swallowed it a lot quicker as well. Before he knew it, the burger had disappeared from his grasp, leaving only a few crumbs on his fingers.
He reached into the bag and one by one ate the deep-fried chips in the small carton. He found himself eating the fries much faster then he had eaten the burger, the copious amount of salt on each individual chip was beyond addictive as he shoveled more then three into his mouth at once.
After he had finished the carton of fries, he put the rubbish into the bag and wiped his hands on the serviette. Only then, did he turn his head to his left and see Brian watching him with a smile on his face. “What?”
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen you eat like that.” Brian said with a slight laugh as he continued to eat his own food. “Its inspiration for me to hurry up and finish.”
But Zack didn’t find that comment funny at all. Instead, a wave of insecurities washed over him and his stomach started to drop when he realized how much of a pig he’d been while scoffing his food down. He knew there was only one course of action for what he’d done. He stood up abruptly, getting a strange look from the other man. “Just gotta go to the toilet.” He mumbled before running off and into the bathroom.
Brian didn’t really think too much of it as he heard the bathroom door lock behind the other man so he kept eating the food in front of him. He knew he should have done something earlier when he heard the sound of vomiting coming from the bathroom. He dropped the burger onto the table, not really caring as it went everywhere. He ran to the bathroom door and tried to open it, and tried to barge it down but was unsuccessful.
He stepped back from the door and ran a hand through his longish hair. He had no idea what to do. “Zack! Open this door NOW!” He roared through the door as he continued banging and kicking but the heavy door wouldn’t budge. “FUCK!” He screamed loudly, punctuating it with a hard kick to the door.
That was when he remembered his phone was in his pocket. He quickly pulled it out and scrolled through his contacts, before finally settling on the number for Dr. Riley. He took a few steps back from the door and held the phone up to his ear as he pushed dial.
The phone only rang a few times before it was answered by a woman with a slightly nasal tone in her voice. “Dr. Catherine Riley speaking.” She said professionally into the phone.
“Dr. Riley, its Brian. How are you?” Brian said nervously into his phone.
“Hello Brian, I’m good thank you. What can I do to help you today?” Dr. Riley said into the phone.
“I’m worried Zack has relapsed.” Brian said bluntly. “I’m at his house and we just ate lunch. But now he’s in the bathroom throwing it all back up and I can’t get in to stop him.”
Dr. Riley stayed silent for a moment on the other end of the phone and Brian could hear his heart beating faster and faster with every second that passed. “Bring him here immediately.”
“Where are you?” Brian asked, his heart still thrumming erratically.
“I’m at my house.” Dr. Riley responded calmly. “I’ll text you the address but please get him here as quickly as you can.”
Brian let out a slight sigh of relief. “Thank you.”
“No problem. See you soon.” Dr. Riley said still in a calm tone before she hung up the phone.
Brian slid his phone back into his pocket, ignoring the vibration that meant he’d gotten a text and tried one last time to get into the bathroom. He kicked hard against the door, and the heavy door finally gave way and it swung open, Brian’s heart stopping beating for a moment as he looked at his friend, who was hunched over the toilet, still heaving away.
Brian quickly ran the few short step distance between him and Zack and pulled his friend away from the toilet and forced him to sit up against the cool, tile wall. His heart absolutely dropped when he glanced into the toilet momentarily and saw the bright red blood that was mixed in with the rest of the contents. He flushed the toilet and closed the lid, trying to hold back the tears that were threatening to spill from his eyes.
He walked over to the tap and poured a glass of water before handing it to Zack, who looked both physically ill and exhausted. “Please drink this.” He said quietly, squatting down next to the other man as he pulled the glass to his lips and slowly drank the contents of the small glass.
Brian reached down and took the glass from the other man’s hand after he finished. “We’ve got to go.” He said plainly.
Zack slowly stood up and moved over to the vanity where Brian was standing. “Where?”
“We’re going to see someone.” Brian answered. “C’mon.”
“Can I brush my teeth first?” Zack asked, slightly annoyed.
“Fine, just hurry up please.” Brian said assertively.
Zack narrowed his eyes at his friend before he turned on the tap and quickly brushed his teeth. He rinsed the toothbrush before he put it back into its holder and followed Brian out of his bathroom and out of his house and into the pouring rain before they climbed into Brian’s car.
Brian pulled out his phone and quickly read the address, knowing exactly where the place was before he started up the car and started driving south along the Pacific Coast Highway to Newport Beach. As he got closer and closer the therapist’s house, he was more then a little bit impressed by the size of some of the houses along the way.
He could definitely feel the tension in the car as he pulled into Dr. Riley’s extravagant drive way that only lead to an even larger house but he knew that he was doing the right thing, even if Zack did get wildly cranky at him. The pair exited the car once Brian had turned it off and approached the large door, happy that they were once again out of the rain.
The door creaked open after a few moments and Brian turned to see the look of horror as he realized that it was Dr. Riley answering the door. “Hello boys, please do come in.” She smiled and gestured them inside her lavish home.
“You’re an asshole.” Zack spat at Brian as he stepped into the house, following the doctor into one of the large living rooms that the house boasted.
Brian closed the door behind him and followed the other two into the lounge room, taking a seat on the plush leather lounge next to his band mate who looked like he was far from being happy about their current situation. He watched as Zack’s arms tightened across his chest and his gaze narrowed as it locked onto the doctor’s.
“Is there something you want to tell me, Zack?” Dr. Riley asked as he pulled her pad of paper up onto her lap.
Zack didn’t answer right away, instead turning to look at his friend, who looked anything but happy about their current situation either. He shook his head as he turned back to the doctor, choosing not to speak a single word.
“Brian told me what you did, Zack.” Dr. Riley said calmly, but found that the smallest man in the room wouldn’t look at her. “You told me that you haven’t been doing this to yourself. But you’ve been lying to me, haven’t you? How long has this been going on?”
Zack’s eyes slowly made their way up to meet with the doctor’s. “Since I was discharged from the hospital.”
Dr. Riley picked up her pen and scribbled down some notes. “Can you tell me why?”
Zack shrugged at the question. “I don’t want to be fat.”
“You’ve been out of the hospital for four weeks now. How long would you say you’ve been forcing yourself to purge like this?” Dr. Riley pressed, her pen poised and ready to scribble down the notes she needed to.
“Three to four times a week.” Zack answered simply, avoiding eye contact with his friend. “I didn’t want to continue doing this, but I just couldn’t stop.”
“Zack, I strongly believe that you need much more professional help with this battle then I can give you. It is completely your choice, but I believe that you need to go to an eating disorder rehabilitation clinic to get this problem sorted for good.” Dr. Riley started. “I have a former colleague that works at the Orange County Eating Disorder Treatment Centre* that would be more then willing to help you push through this. Would you be willing to do this, Zack?”
“Would there be men there as well?” Zack asked, his arms dropping from across his chest to rest in his lap.
“They do specific programs where it is either men or women only.” Dr. Riley explained. “The programs each take a minimum of three months to complete. Would you be willing to do this?”
Zack turned his head to look at Brian, who was quite clearly for the idea. He nodded mutely before he spoke. “Yes.”
“I’ll just go give her a ring and I’ll see when I can get you into this program. I will be back in a moment.” Dr. Riley excused herself, placing the pad of paper and pen on the seat she had just left.
Zack turned to look at Brian, who was smiling appreciatively at him. But the pair didn’t say a single word to each other.
A few minutes passed in complete silence before Dr. Riley finally re-entered the room, a slight smile on her face. “I’ve just spoken to my former colleague, Dr. Frazer and the good news is that the next all male program starts in two weeks.”
“That’s great news.” Brian said excitedly.
“But, I am worried about leaving Zack alone until he is admitted.” Dr. Riley said quietly. “I know this is asking a little much, but I think it would be best if he could stay permanently with someone until he does get admitted. I would recommend you Brian, if you were willing.”
Brian turned and looked at his friend. “Yes, that’s fine. As long as he’s willing.”
“Thank you.” Zack said quietly.
“Thank you both for coming today. I’m glad we have made some good progress.” Dr. Riley said in a final tone. “I will keep in touch and so will Dr. Frazer. She will let you the time and date when you will be allowed to be admitted to the treatment centre.”
Brian and Zack both graciously smiled at the doctor before they made their way out of the house and into Brian’s waiting Mustang. For the first part of the short car ride, the pair remained silent, both lost in their own thoughts. But it was Zack who finally broke the silence.
“Brian?”
“Yeah, Zack?” Brian asked casually, turning to his right to glance at the other man momentarily.
“Thank you.” Zack said with a long sigh that followed. “I don’t know how I’d be going if it wasn’t for you.”
“You know I’d do anything for you, man.” Brian said, turning his attention back to the road as he started going through the green light. “But, you’re welcome.” He added, mumbling slightly.
Zack nodded, not speaking for a moment. “Is Michelle going to be fine with me taking you away for two weeks?”
Brian nodded. “She’ll be fine, don’t worry about it.”
“Thank you.” Zack said quietly again. He turned his attention to the road outside, watching the angry ocean as the waves beat hard against the many cliffs that lined the Pacific Coast Highway. He almost envied them. He knew that the next few months would be even harder then the previous ones but he could only hope that he was ready for it.
