When Night Falls(Pt9) Joe spent most of the midnight hours buzzing around the house, cleaning and straightening. Paying extra attention to their bedroom, replacing old candles with new ones, dusting, vacuuming and as an after thought he would get Crystal to gather some freshly cut flowers from the gardens. She had looked at him strangely upon that request. A huge smile graced her lips when Joe told her why he wanted them. He would brage into Nick's room every time he went by the door, to make sure he was up and packing. "I want you out of my house in two days. No arguments, snide remarks, threats, persuading me to let you stay...nothing...nada...your out...gone...got it." With that Joe spun on his heels out of Nicks room. "I don't get to stay for the happy reunion?" Nick called after him. "NO!" Joe reappeared in the doorway. "You can make up with Rick another time. You will not be here when he comes home in a few days to try and mess it up for us. I mean it Nick, no joking around and no games. I want you gone. Go back to that lonely castle you call home." "Your point is very well taken Joseph. I'm surprised you allowed me to stay this long." "Yeah whatever....you..outta here, two days." Joe disappeared again, only to reappear in the door. "Nick, when was the last time you took blood from Thomas?" Nick straightened from the task of making his bed. "About six months, I think. Why?" "I'm getting...something from him, likes he's off kilter, worried maybe..." "Perhaps he and Amanda had an argument before he left for the office." "Can you feel him?" Nick stared into the distance, a frown passed across his face, "He does seem worried about something. Give him a call, put your mind at ease about whatever you are feeling." "Maybe I will." Joe said softly. "Do you ever feel the others when they are around?" "The others, as in, Rebecca, Vivian, Steve...sometimes. I'm not their favorite person you know. Besides, I'm not sure how you are feeling them anyway. It doesn't make any sense." Nick moved closer to Joe. "Are they here now?" "No, but they have been. On the flight home from LA they were. Off and on since then." "Rebecca has never been very far from you. She comes closer whenever you and Sav have a fall out." "Yeah, she does." "That's why you've felt her more lately." Nick reached up to softly caressed his cheek. "I suppose so." Joe smiled wanly. "I better go call Thomas." Going downstairs Joe made his way to the living room phone. Dialing the number to Thomas' office, he waited as the call clicked over the lines and began to ring. After the eighth ring, he hung up and dialed again, thinking that maybe he had dialed wrong, again the same results. "There's no answer." "Try again." Nick called from upstairs. "I did." "He maybe out of his office, in a meeting." "I'll try again later." Joe replied and flopped down on the sofa. Grabbing the pillow he hugged it to his chest. His eyes landed on the picture of Sav on the shelves beside the TV. He hadn't changed at all since that picture was taken in late '92. '˜Well in the way he looks anyway.' Joe sighed heavily. 'This is going to be a long few days.' He reached for the remote and flipped the TV on scanning the channels. "News, why not, see what's going on in the world today." "... city of Legaspi in the Philippines, is still drying out from a late season monsoon last week. 18" of rain fell on the already saturated ground from early rains. Area's in and around Legaspi were flooded up to 8 feet. Supplies of water, food, and clothing have been pouring in city." The announcer paused in his commentary and quickly read the paper that was handed to him. 'Breaking News' flashed on the bottom of the screen. "We have just received word from our affiliates in New York City, that there has been some sort of an explosion at the de Brabant Foundation building just over an hour ago. Debris falling from the 5th or 6th floors has injured an estimated 40 pedestrians on the street below...." Joe sprang to his feet to stare at the TV, as he fumbled with the volume control on the remote. A window popped up in the upper right hand corner of the screen. A live shot of the building, smoke billowing from the floors, fire trucks lined the street, lights flashing, several ambulance's were parked beside them. "... Lynn can you give us any more information? From what we can see from our monitors in Dublin, looks like the building is on fire." "There have been confirmed reports of an explosion from employees coming out of the building, Mike. At this time the firemen are unable to enter the building, there is a lot of smoke, but no reports of flames can be seen. Several witnesses also said that about 6 men dressed in black, carrying assault rifles entered the building around 10:30 am, taking the elevators to the upper floors. Shortly after 11:15 am the explosion occurred. An unconfirmed total of 16 employees have been injured, 23 of those are in critical conditions, 3 fatalities. These do not include the pedestrians on the street, just the employees and are unconfirmed numbers at this time Mike." "The men in black with assault rifles, are their where-about in the building known?" "Not at this time Mike, employees that I've talked to have told me that no one from the 28th floor have been seen since this all began a few hours ago." "Can you hear it Joe!" Nick yelled over the volume of the TV. He hadn't been paying attention to what was being said by the news cast. He finally looked at the screen. "That's the Foundation build...ing..." he looked at Joe's pale face. "What is going on?" he asked him, then looked back to the TV. "...the 28th floor is the executive floor." "Lynn can you tell us if this is a hostage situation?" "No one has come forward with any demands, but thats' not to say this is a hostage situation yet. The NYPD have no information on that." "Have names of the missing or presumed dead been released yet?" "We don't have the names of the dead, pending notification of relatives. Among the missing only a few names have been mentioned by employees that I've talk to." Lynn flipped through her notes. "Executive Vice President Scott McBain, Head of Security Todd Sanders, Sarah Wallace, Secretary to Mr. McBain, Thomas Elliott, CEO, Tamara Nichols, Susan Lamb, David Schuls. "Does any one know where these people you just mention are at this time?" "They are all presumed to be on the 28th floor." Joe sat heavily on the couch, staring numbly at the TV. Nick quickly made his way to the phone. He punched in the numbers overseas and waited for the connection to go through. He glanced back at the TV to see a commercial on. "Idiots." He cursed under his breath. Several clicks on the phone and he was connected, the line was busy. "Damnit!" he hung up and tried again. Slamming the phone down, he went around the couch and sat beside Joe. "Can you feel him?" "Yes...h.he's...channeled my mind to...to him, only him..." Joe quickly glanced at Nick, then back to the TV "...he's not scared though." "I can't feel him as well. Thomas is going to be alright." The news broadcast come back on, Mike glanced up at the camera. "If you are just tuning into our broadcast. I'm going to recap the top story of the hour. The multi-billion dollar corporation, The de Brabant Foundation based in New York City around 11:15 am EST in the United States, was rocked by an explosion on the 5th and 6th floors. The cause of the explosions are unknown. An unconfirmed report of 125 people walking in front of or working in the building have been injured by debris. 24 are in critical condition 5 fatalities, these numbers are unconfirmed. Witnesses reported that 6 men dressed in black clothes, carrying assault rifles entered the build around 10:30 am. An estimated 24 employees are unaccounted for at this time, many of those top executives from the 28th floor." "We going to go back Lynn Mathews who is standing by live in New York, not far from the where this is all taking place. Lynn, I was watching our monitors here in Dublin during the commercial break, there seems to be a little more activity there. Any word on what's happening?" "Yes there is. A few minutes ago, just before you went to commercial break, a flurry of police and medical personal gathered around the main doors. From where I am standing, I could see people coming out of the building. They could be some of the missing employees." "Can you give us a number of how many?" Mike asked, intently watching his monitor off to the side. "From here it looked to be around 8 or 9. All the information I'm getting is coming in rather quickly. At the same time as these people were leaving the building. A blue car with heavily tinted windows was seen barreling through the barricades on the other side of the building." Lynn paused for a moment, pressing the tiny ear piece with her finger. "That same car is reported to have raced into the parking garage under the building Mike. The police are taking no measure to go inside to apprehend the driver at this time. This information is coming from an affiliate of mine on that side." "We can assume the police aren't going in because they can't account for the location of the heavily armed men inside the building." "That's correct...." On the screen Lynn turned away to look behind her as the noise of the crowd grew louder. "People are being moved this way and I can...I can hear an officer asking them to move back. I'll try to get closer." Nick stared at the TV, vaguely listening to the reporter's constant account of what was happening. "Where did you say Sav called you from?" he turned to Joe when he didn't get a response, giving him a rough shake. Joe turned worried eyes to him. "Where did Richard call you from?" "Where...h-he's in New....York." Joe's voice trailed off as he looked back at the TV. "Sav was in that....car." "Bloody hell." Nick hissed and leaped to his feet, racing to the phone again. "We don't know that he was Joe." He quickly dialed a number, it rang several times before he tried another and yet another, getting no answer at any of them. At the same time he desperately tried to knock down the barrier with Sav. On the television screen, Lynn was quickly making her way to an officer, firing off questions. "Officer, can you confirm the 5 deaths that have been reported?" "No I cannot. Move back people, come on keep going." "Is there a hostage situation on the 28th floor?" "We don't know that yet. Keep moving we need this block cleared." "Why are we being told to move back?" Lynn thrust the microphone close to him. "Employees released a short time ago, reported to us that there is a bomb on the 28th floor. For precautionary measures we're moving people back. Please folks keep moving." "Oh shit." rushed from Joe's lungs, dropping his head in hand. "Thomas may have been one of the ones let go." Joe was shaking his head. "We both know that he wasn't." he felt the couch give as Nick sat beside him again. "You couldn't get through?" "No. I can't get an answer from any one." Nick glanced at the TV. "You're feeling the same thing from Thomas. He's worried for the safety of his friends and colleagues." "Any luck getting through to Sav?" Joe looked back at the TV. "No. He's thrown up a barrier that I cannot break through. What about you? Can you get through to him?" Joe shook his head. "He's in the building...trying to get to Thomas. That much I know."This idea came to me a few years before 9-11 while staring at a large album cover on my wall for Pyromania and has NO barring what-so-ever of the events from 9-11.
