Part 9
Ruben woke up. He was still at Kim's apartment. He'd insisted on staying there. Kim however, wasn't comfortable with sharing a bed. He understood that, so he slept on her couch.
He got up and walked over to Kim's room. She was awake, sitting up, running her hands through her hair. Ruben got the impression she didn't get much sleep, if any. 'Poor girl.' He thought.
He knocked on her door. "Good morning." He said.
"I wish."
"Oh, Kim..." He sat down on the bed next to her and put an arm around her. "Dare I ask how your night was?"
"Let's see...I've been raped twice, the last time being just last night...by the guy who used to be my best guy and is now engaged to my best girl. I sure didn't have any sweet dreams if that's what you're asking."
"Poor thing." He said, kissing her forehead. "Well, if it makes you feel a little bit better, I'm going to have a talk with my boy, Clay today."
"Ruben-"
"Now don't tell me no, Kim. You've got to remember I'm doing this for you. See, I don't know what's going on with Clay...but doing whatever I may do today should set him straight, even if only for a while. I am not going to let him get away with this without dealing with me."
"Ruben, I...I just don't want you to get hurt. I mean, if he can do what he did to me...who knows what he's capable of?"
"Well, I'm ready for him no matter what. I just want to make sure he never even thinks of hurting you again."
"If anything, he might want to hurt me more once you get done with him."
"Kim, look at it this way. What do you think would have happened if I hadn't come along?"
"I don't know. Maybe he wouldn't have raped me the second time."
"Well, I don't know about that...but I do know one thing."
"What's that?"
"You would have had to go through this mess all alone. And that wouldn't have been good for you at all. Just like when you said you'd had it under control before...yeah, guess what? The son of a bitch did it again. Look where you would have been right now. Angry, depressed...and ready to do God knows what."
Kim sighed. "I guess you're right."
"You know I'm right." He said. "I swear to you, as long as I'm around...I'm going to make sure Clay never even comes near you. I care about you, Kim. I'd do anything to make sure you're safe."
Kim smiled and put her arms around him. "Thanks, big man."
"Anytime, girl."
"Just promise me one thing."
"Sure."
"If you do anything to Clay...make sure he can still sing. That's the one thing he's good for now."
Ruben just smiled and shook his head. "Hell, he'll be lucky if he can still breathe when I'm done with him."
Later that afternoon, Clay was just relaxing and writing thank you cards to everyone that came to his and Amber's engagement party.
He heard a knock on his door. He went to open it and saw Ruben standing there.
"Hey!"
"Hey, dawg." They shook hands. "How's it going?"
"Oh, I'm just chilling out. Last night was so much fun, wasn't it?"
"It sure was. I never knew you could throw a good party."
"Actually, it was all Amber's doing. All I had to do, according to her, was 'stand around and look handsome like you always do.' " He laughed.
"Well, it was great either way."
"Thanks."
"I just stopped by to give you a message for Amber from Kim."
"O.K."
"Tell her that Kim is doing much better."
"Really? That's great!" 'She should be after last night.' He thought.
"Yeah. All she needed was a good night's sleep and she's good as new."
"That's good." Inside, Clay began to panic. 'Does he know what happened? Did Kim tell him anything?' "So...did Kim happen to mention just why she wasn't feeling so well?"
"No. But don't worry. I took good care of her."
"You're a great guy. I wouldn't expect any less from you."
"Right. Listen, I've got to go. Could you pass that message along to Amber for me?"
"Sure, no problem."
"Oh, and I've also got a message for you too."
"O.K. What is-"
Clay never got to finish because Ruben suddenly punched him in the face, knocking him to the ground. He stood over his now former best friend.
"If I ever catch you anywhere near Kim, I'll make that punch look like your performance of 'Grease'. You got that, dawg? Good."
With that, he walked quickly out of the apartment.
'I took care of him, Kim. And I still left him able to sing, too.' He thought with a smile.
Back inside, Clay wasn't smiling at all.
'So she did tell him! I knew it!' He thought. 'Now he might just go and tell Amber. That's just great. Thanks a lot, Kim, for making this situation so much worse.'
He got up and got himself and ice pack. Then he picked up the phone and dialed Kim's number. He knew from past experience that she'd be home licking her wounds.
Back at Kim's apartment, Kim was watching soap operas.
"Well, this sucks! Even these losers have better lives than I do!" She laughed to herself.
Suddenly her phone rang. She muted the TV and picked up the phone.
"Hello?"
"Hello, sweetheart." It was Clay!
"What do you want, Clay?" She asked angrily.
"I just wanted to give you a quick message-"
"I don't need this." She started to hang up.
"Now, now, Kimmie. If you hang up on me...I'm going to have to pay you a visit...and you know what happened the last time I paid you a visit."
Unfortunately, she did know. That's what started this mess in the first place.
"Say what you've got to say, then hang up." She stated firmly.
"That's my girl. I'm gonna make this short and sweet. Tell Ruben to stay out of this."
"Stay out of what?"
"Stay out of our business. This is between you and me. Not him."
"He's my friend, and yours too. He's now as much a part of this as we are."
"So is Amber. But you haven't told her yet, have you?"
"No, but-"
"Good girl. Pass that message along to Ruben for me, will you? It shouldn't be that hard for him to do. He is the American Idol, after all." With that, he hung up.
Kim hung up the phone. But to her surprise, she wasn't angry. She actually felt proud of herself. She was able to talk to Clay without sounding weak. She was able to maintain her composure. She now knew for sure that she can handle Clay anytime, anywhere...just like he'd said.
Kim felt so good...she felt like celebrating! She picked up the phone and dialed a number...
"Amber? Hey, girlfriend! Feel like a girls' night out?"
