Winds of Destiny (Pt8)
Rachel smiled brightly at him. “I thought that was…” She didn’t get anymore out as Sav crushed her to his chest. “It’s so good to see…” Again her voice trailed off when she clearly felt the tremble in his entire body, the slight pain as his fingers dug into her back, and lastly, the fear that rolled from him.
Rachel dropped her porcelain white mask, in-lay with rich multi-colored sapphires, it shattered on the street at their feet. Confused at his state, she put her arms tightly around him.
“Richard what is it, what’s wrong?”
“Get me out of here.” Sav mumbled against her neck.
“I can’t do that unless you let go, my feet aren’t touching the ground.”
All the while people continued to pass them, some chided them for being in the way, as others bumped into them. His response to all of that, was to tighten his hold.
“Ethan…” Rachel with drew her arms as she tried to twist in his grasp. “Make a path for us.”
Pushing his fingers between Sav’s arm and Rachel’s back, Ethan gave a gentle tug to get him moving. Rachel whispered softly in his ear that everything would be alright, block out everything around him and let Ethan pull them to the sidewalk. He led them to a dark indention of a door in one of the shops. It took both of them several minutes to get Sav to relinquish his hold on Rachel enough to let her slide to the ground.
With his eyes closed, Sav leaned heavily on the stone wall, breathing fast to help calm his racing heart, he slide down before his knees gave out.
Rachel knelt in front of him, brushing the sweat dampened hair away that clang to his cheeks. She glanced up at Ethan and he quickly pulled out a flask from the inside pocket of his costume.
“Here, drink this.” Rachel urged him.
Sav took the flask, with a shaking hand took a deep drink.
Nick came to a skidding halt in the doorway and took in the scene. Having felt Sav’s fear through their bond, but unable to get to him in the throng of people, unless he used his alter ego and flew to him. That would have risen to much suspicion, so he followed the link until the trio emerged from the crowd several hundred feet from him. Nick quickly dropped to knees beside him on the ground and touched his cheek.
“Rick, what happened?”
Sav slowly opened his eyes to focus on him, his mouth working to form the words. “I…I…it was there again…so close…panicked…too many… people…mask everywhere…” Blowing out a haggard breath, Sav leaned against Nick.
“We should go back to the villa.” Nick whispered, dipping his head down to kiss the softness of his hair. Sav could only nod in agreement. Ignoring the questioning looks from Ethan and Rachel when he stood up, he gently coaxed Sav with him. Staying close to the buildings, the group slowly made their way further down, dipping into an alleyway. As they walked in silence, Nick could feel Sav starting to somewhat relax, although the fear still hummed in their bond.

Nick ran the cool cloth over his brow, tucking the hair behind his ear and pushing it over his shoulder, continuing with the cloth over the bare skin of his neck. Sav sat motionless on the bed, his eyes darting around the room from shadow to shadow, looking for any kind of movement. Laying the cloth on the carpet by his knee, Nick untied Sav’s shoe’s and slid them under the bed. Reaching up, he unsnapped his jeans and pulled the zipper down, reeling in his desire upon seeing the trail of hair down his stomach. Looking up, Nick found Sav staring back at him.
“As tempting as you are right now, I wouldn’t dream of taking advantage of you.” Nick told him.
“Someone is following me.”
“Rise up.” Nick told him so he could remove his jeans.
“You don’t believe me.”
“I didn’t say or think that at all.” Nick replied skimming the jeans from his legs and tossing them on the chair. “We can talk about it later. Right now I want you to rest.”
Sav slide under the sheet, lying on his back, Nick tucked the sheet around him. Bending over, he placed a soft kiss on his lips. “Get some rest. I’ll be in the sitting room if you need me.”
Sav watched him as he left, stopping long enough to dim the lights in the room to a soft glow, leaving the door cracked just enough so the brighter light streamed through. Sav sighted heavily, turning on his side to stare through the sheer curtains to the darkness beyond them.
Nick joined Crystal, Ethan and Rachel in the sitting area. He took the seat beside Crystal and warily ran his hand over his face. “Accept my apologies for not introducing you to them earlier Crystal.”
“I met Ethan at Thomas’ funeral. Rachel and I already exchanged introductions.”
“Nicholas, could you kindly explain to me why Richard would be so terrified not to move out of that crowd?” Ethan asked as he leaned forward to place his drink on the table.
“He firmly believes that someone is following him.”
“Why would he think that?” Rachel asked.
Nick’s smug expression didn’t go unnoticed by anyone in the room as he stared daggers into Rachel. “Your father.”
“My father is dead Nicholas.”
“Yes he is.”
“Then it is impossible to be him.”
“I didn’t say that it was him. I said someone.” Nick shot back. “What Armand put him through has instilled that fear in him.”
“Armand may have done some horri…” Ethan started.
“May have!?” Nick’s voice boomed in the room, then calmed to a lower tone when he continued. “Where were you when Armand started plotting his revenge? After Thomas’ death when I asked for The Elders assistants? Not one of you came as I stood by helplessly watching my family be cut down one by one!”
“Nicholas, please calm down.”
“I most certainly will not Ethan!” Nick growled and shot from his seat, stalking over to the bar he poured another drink, quickly gulping it down.
Rachel stood up and went over to him. “Nick, I’m sorry for what my father did to you and your family, but he is dead now he can’t harm you anymore.”
Nick stared at her a moment. “He maybe dead, but the damage he has caused to this family continues.”
“How so?” Ethan asked.
Nick’s brows shot up. “In all the years you have known Sav, have you ever seen him this distraught?”
“Yes, on many occasions, but the feelings I’m getting from him now are very different from those times. But it doesn’t explain what you meant by the damage continues.”
“Armand was able to screw with his mind the entire time he was stalking us. It grew worse when he took Sav for those months, threatening to kill us all if he didn’t do what he was told, what was demanded of him.”
“Much the same way you did Nicholas.” Ethan reminded him.
“Don’t you dare compare me to Armand. I never carried through with my threats!” Taking a deep breath, Nick scrubbed his face with his hand. “Never mind that he blew up my building, taking away a valuable resources, reduced my home to rubble, those can be rebuilt in time. Armand managed to do something I’ve been trying to do for years and always failed.”
Ethan gave his last sentence some thought. He glanced around the room, then stood up to search the rest of the villa. “He broke them apart.” He announced once he rejoined them.
“Permanently.” Nick told them.
“I don’t believe that for one minute.” Rachel spun back to Nick.
“Do you see Joseph here?”
“That doesn’t mean anything. You and Richard go off together all the time.”
“It’s far different this time, we have your father to thank for that.” Nick glared at Rachel, then stormed past her. “Excuse me.”
“Nick…” Crystal called after him as he left the room. She turned back to Ethan and Rachel and smiled politely. “I guess he was a little upset.”
“And left us with very little answers.” Ethan leaned back in his seat to look to Rachel.
“I can tell you almost everything you want know about the past year. But, before we get started...Rachel, your father was an evil, old asshole and I’m glad he met a painful, violent end.”
Rachel furrowed her brows. “Thank you…I think.” She glanced at Ethan, then back to Crystal.
“We know some of it, but you can fill in the gaps.” Ethan informed her.
“All right, let me change my clothes and get something to drink, maybe a snack.”
Crystal came back in a short time later, dressed in a light blue cotton sleep ware and bare feet. Taking the same chair, she curled her feet under her. Over the course of a few hours, she told them everything she could remember about the past year. Questions she couldn’t answer, she told them to ask Nick. It all lead up to what led her to follow Nick and Sav on this vacation or getaway of sorts. Covering her mouth to hide the yawn, she waited for them to ask another question.
“Well, I think we should take our leave Rachel. The young lady is up past her bedtime.” Ethan smiled and stood up.
“It’s not past my bedtime.” Crystal said. “But I am a little tired.”
Taking her hand Ethan brushed his lips across the back. “Thank you for taking the time to fill us in.”
“You’re welcome.” Crystal smiled.
Rachel approached her at the door and took her hand in both of hers. “I hope we can be friends, despite what my father did to you.”
“Just because your father was a total jerk, doesn’t mean it runs in the family. But, I’m sure we can be friends.”
“Great.” Rachel leaned forward to kiss her cheek. “Maybe we can get together for some girl talk before we leave at the end of the week.”
“That sounds like fu…” Crystal was cut off by Sav’s muffed yell. Turning toward his room she made to head that way. “He hasn’t had a bad dream in weeks.”
Rachel grabbed her arm to stop her. “No, let me go. You can’t be sure of his state of mind.” Releasing her, she hurried to his bedroom, closing the door softly behind her.
“Would you like me to stay until Nick returns?” Ethan asked her.
“If you want to.” Crystal replied with a shrug, her eyes never leaving Sav’s door. Without another word, she went to her room, leaving Ethan alone in the sitting area to await Nick.
Rachel cautiously approached the bed where Sav was sitting up, knees drawn to his chest and his head resting on top. Gently touching the silky smoothness of his hair, Rachel sat on the edge of the mattress.
Sav jerked his head up to stare at her, his eyes red rimmed and gold flaked. Sniffling, he wiped away the wet tracks of tears. “Rachel.”
“Hi.”
“I…I wasn’t expecting….where is Nick?”
“He stepped out and hasn’t returned. Ethan is in the sitting area room with Crystal. I believe she has gone to bed though. We were just about to leave when we heard you yell.”
“It was…was a bad dream.” Sav straightened his legs out and stared at his fingers.
“Would you like to talk about it?”
“No.” Sav whispered. “No one understands my dreams, no one but Joe.”
“You can tell me. I will understand.”
“No.” Sav glanced at her, wiping his face again he lay back down, tugging the sheet over his shoulders.
“All right, try to go back to sleep.” She stood up to leave.
“Rachel…wait…will you lay with me for awhile? Someone always did after I had a bad dream.”
Rachel smiled in the dim light. ‘He looks so much like a frightened little boy right now.’ She thought kicking her high heeled shoes off, then struggling out of the costume she still wore to reveal the tight fitting lace up bodice and ruffled knee length knickers. “Do you have a shirt I can borrow to sleep in?”
“Second drawer on the left.” Sav told her gazing at the swell of her breast over the top of the bodice.
Rachel took one out and went into the bathroom to finish changing. When she emerged she tossed the garments with the rest and left the bedroom to tell Ethan that she would be staying the day. He agreed and remained in the sitting room, getting comfortable on the sofa.
Going back into the room, she closed the door with a soft click and dimmed the lights more. She felt a little nervous about lying with him again. It had only been a few years since they had last seen each other. As with their past tryst, they would always spend days on end together, satisfying a need they both craved from each other. She knew that was not on his mind as she slid beneath the sheet. She heard him sniffle again and the mattress moved when he scooted closer to her, his arm going across her waist. Rachel lifted her arm so he could lay his head in the crook of her shoulder.
Softly rubbing his arm that lay across her stomach, Rachel turned her head to breathe deeply of his scent. Bringing forth memories that were never very far away in her mind of their times together.
