Chapter 9- Sins of the Father
Darren moaned against the softness of Daniel’s lips. It took him a second to realise that Daniel’s weren’t responding. His eyelids fluttered open to be confronted by Daniel’s confused green. No! He pushed Daniel off him and scrambled to his feet. “I’m sor…sorry!” He stammered gathering his things he began to walk then run away from the scene. How could you? He’s your friend! The thoughts swirled madly around Darren’s head as he ran. Accusations, insults, laughter all uttered in his father’s voice. In the midst of the chaos raging inside his mind he thought he heard Daniel shout his name as he ran but he dismissed it. There was never meant to be hope in his life.
As soon as he was sure the distance between him and Daniel was great howedowed down, replaying the scene. Daniel had been leaning over him, so much remorse in his eyes and something more. Something Darren had taken as affection and had acted upon. Daniel must hate him! He fought the tears as they threatened to reign. He wasn’t meant to be happy, he didn’t even know how to keep his only friend! There was only one place for him. Home. His father knew what a worthless person he was he’d know how to treat him.
A lump of self pity rose in his throat as he reached the top of his street and doubt laid its first seed. What if it had been what Daniel wanted? Or what if he could forgive him? Maybe they could laugh about it in years to come or something The optimistic voice sounded hollow and insincere. He turned the key in the lock and sighed heavily.
This was where he belonged.
*~*~*
“Darren!” Daniel yelled as the boy took off. “Darren wait!” He willed himself to stand up, to run to catch him and explain everything was okay but his legs refused to obey. Instead he sat there stunned. Just as stunned as he had been when Darkisskissed him, so much so he didn’t react. Idiot!
He fought back tears of frustration. He’d finally had Darren, had the chance to show him how he cared and he’d ruined it all. He had to find him and explain, he couldn’t leave it like that, he just couldn’t. He rose slowly and grabbed his bag.
Darren probably hadn’t gone back to school, not in that state, he’d probably gone home. Home, where that manic hurt him. Daniel’s fists clenched in anger. The thought of anybody hurting Darren, whether it be Robert or his father consumed him with rage. If he got there and Darren’s father had laid one finger on him…he wasn’t sure he’d be accountable for his actions.
I think about you all the time Daniel thought as he covered the distance to Darren’s house. I want to spend every moment with you He had to find the perfect thing to say to Darren to let him know how much he cared, to chase away the fears and protect him from the dark in in the world. I love you That said it all.
He reached Darren’s door. Fear and excitement making his heart beat ten to the dozen. He was going to do it! He was going to tell Darren! Nervous yet breathless with happiness he rose his hand to knock upon the door and noticed it was already ajar.
Puzzled he pushed slightly and the door creaked open. The place was a mess, plates were smashed on the floor, the furniture lay in ruins and in the middle lay a broken frame. A young Darren and his parents smiling happily at the camera, unaware of the violent debris that surrounded them. He carefully bent to pick the picture up, amongst the cracked glass swam a river of blood. “Darren… he whispered, fear snatching his heart in a vice like grip. “Darren!” he was shouting now. He stopped, above him a quiet child like sobbing could be heard.
“Darren, I’m coming!” He yelled storming up the stairs. Please God, don’t let him be hurt, please! He prayed as he reached the bathroom door, shoving it open in his panic to get to the boy.
On the floor lay a still body, surrounded by empty pill bottles. The body’s hand was clasped in that of his sons who leaned over him, crying silently.
“He’s dead.” Darren whispered without looking up.
Daniel kneeled down and covered their hands with his own. Darren looked up his eyes an ocean of grief so much so Daniel tore his eyes away. Next to the body of Darren’s father lay a note. The last words of the man that lay between them read “I’m so sorry.”
