*At the hotel*
It was a day in early September, and Lance and JC were sitting in the living area of their suite at the Hilton Hotel in San Francisco. *NSYNC had been in the city for two days to shoot the video to their latest single “That girl will never be mine”, and they’d decided to spend the next few days there to have some time in the city and give some interviews as well. It was late evening, and Joey and Chris were out, clubbing. JC didn’t know where Justin was, but after their fight a few hours ago he didn’t really care. Him and Justin were fighting a lot in the last weeks. To be exactly, it had started when they’d begun “fooling around”, as Justin always called it.
JC had always had a slight crush on the youngest member of the group, he’d realized it just a few month after *NSYNC had started. Well, it was difficult *not* to love Justin. He was sweet, kind, and very good looking, and JC was one of the million people from all over the world who adored him secretly. The other guys in the group knew that JC was bi, as well as they all knew that Lance was gay, and nobody had a problem with that. JC had always pegged Justin as straight, like Chris and Joey were, especially when he was in the relationship with Britney. Justin and Britney were together like all the time, and everybody – their friends, their families, their fans, the media – had thought they’d marry someday. And then they broke up.
JC was very surprised that Justin wasn’t really miserable after it. They had talked about it, and Justin had explained that the special feeling just wasn’t there anymore, that he didn’t love Britney anymore like sed sed to. Well, he still loved her like friend, but not like a lover.
The same evening, Justin had kissed JC for the first time. They’d been sitting on the couch in JC’s livingroom, close together, like they always did when they had one of their “serious talks”. One moment they were laughing hysterically about something, their legs and shoulders touching lightly, and the next moment Justin was sitting in JC’s lap, kissing him passionately. And JC could do nothing but kiss him back.
This night had been six month ago, and the first weeks everything had been fine. They didn’t spend all their time together, but every now and then they’d meet at Justin’s or JC’s house and – well, “fool around”. They didn’t tell the other about it. JC had hoped that it would become more serious after some time, but Justin made clear that for him it was just for fun. And from that moment on, it had become worse.
Now all they were doing was fighting, and JC was tired of it. He wanted his best friend back, even if it meant that they couldn’t kiss and make out anymore. Hell, he didn’t really want to make out with Justin anymore. It had never been more than a crush, he knew that now. Especially since they boy he really loved, with all his heart, was now siting in the same room with him.
JC hadn’t thought of Lance as attractive when he met him the first time about seven years ago. He thought Lance was funny looking, but that he had the “special something” and would grow into his looks with the time. He also was very sweet, a good listener and somebody JC could always talk to and rely on when Justin wasn’t around, especially in the last weeks. He didn’t realize how serious his feelings towards Lance were up until a month ago, when Lance told him about a guy he’d met at a club who’d asked him out on a date. JC had never in his life been so jealous; although he didn’t show it. He wished Lance good luck for the date and secretly did happy backflips in his mind when Lance came back and told him that the guy wasn’t exactly his type. So over the last few weeks, JC had tried to get closer to Lance, to show him how much he liked him, but the blond guy always shied away and tried not to be too close to his bandmate.
Like now. Lance was sitting on a chair in a corner of the room, reading a book about music business, while JC was standing at the opposite side of the room at the window, looking out on the pool ground beneath them. He was bored out of his mind, but he wasn’t in the mood to do something like clubbing. Lance wasn’t a big help, silently reading, every now and the casting a short glance at JC that he hoped the brunette didn’t notice.
Knowing nothing better to do, JC started beatboxing a random rhythm, tapping on the floor with his feet. He didn’t see Lance shiver and rub his arms in order to fight the goosebumps on them.
“Is it cold in here?”, Lance asked when JC started to sing the first tunes of ‘Gone’.
“There’s a thousand words that I could say..” JC stopped and sat down on the edge of the table beside him, still not looking at the other boy in the room.
“Um, no, I don't think so”, he answered, leaning his back at the wall.
“Oh... okay... I'll just pull this blanket on then.”, Lance said, grabbed a blanket from a nearby chair and pulled it over his body. JC had continued his singing, and Lance looked at his bare arms in doubt, wondering why his friends wasn’t cold.
JC pulled his legs up on the table, tears filling his eyes. He had to think about Justin and himself whenever he heard or sang this song, and the friendship they used to have.
“Man, that song...”, he sighed and finally looked up when he heard Lance’s weak reply.
“Yeah...”, the younger boy shivered again.
“Lance, are you sure you're alright?” JC asked concerned. “You're pale, man. Even for you.”
Lance shrugged. “ I don't know....I'm just kinda cold...” He looked around in the room and caught sight of his sweatshirt that was laying on the table JC was sitting on. “You maybe wanna toss me that sweatshirt over by you?” JC immediately grabbed the shirt, hopped of the table and went over to him.
“Any other signs of possible illness?” he wanted to know.
“ I'm fine. I'm just cold”, Lance said irritably. “Just toss me the sweatshirt and I'll warm up.” JC reluctantly handed him the sweatshirt, and his hands touched Lance’s skin for a moment.
“ Lance, you're burning up!”, he exclaimed. “You’re not just tired, you’re sick!” He put his hand on Lance’s forehead, and Lance sighed and weakly pushed the hand away.
“I'm fine...”, he stated, “your hand is just cold...” JC shook his head.
“No, you're not!” Lance swallowed weakly.
“I'm fine...I'm probably just tired...” he trailed of. JC shook his head again.
“My hand is not cold, you're burning up!”, he exclaimed. “You're not just tired, you're sick!”
“I'll be fine” Lance repeated stubbornly. JC sighed.
“Lance, Wade could easily kick your butt right now.”
“So?”, Lance replied. JC went down on his knees beside him.
“You're weak. I could pick you up and you could even make me let you go.”
“I'm just tired. That's all.” Lance repeated, trying to brush JC off. “I'll be fine “ JC again shook his head.
“I know tired, after all I put you guys through. That ain't it.” He was referring to all the extra-hours they’d spent in the studio in the last weeks, because they were working on some songs for their new album, and JC just wasn’t satisfied with the way everything sounded. Lance sighed again.
“Fine. Go get a thermometer if you think I'm so sick. That'll prove I'm *not* sick.” He watched as JC went into the bathroom and heard him rumbling around, then JC came back, a thermometer in his hands.
“I still say I'm not sick”, Lance said stubbornly, and JC countered “Then open up and prove it.” So Lance opened his mouth and closed it down again on the thermometer before he leaned back in the chair and closed hies wes with a slight frown. JC stood beside him, waiting impatiently until Lance opened his eyes and looked at him in question after tapping his watch and the thermometer. JC carefully took the thermometer out of Lance’s mouth and looked at it.
“Lance, dude, it's 101!”, he told his friend. “Your temp, man.”
Lance groaned. “I can't be sick...”
“Sorry, but you're telling the wrong one”, JC answered, even more concerned than before. “You *are*.” Lance let out another tired sigh.
“I guess I better go to bed then...”
“You shouldn’t be alone”, JC interrupted him. “I'll stay with you.” Lance smiled at him weakly.
“You don't have to you know...” He shoved off the blanket and tried to stand up. In an instant JC was by his side.
“Hey, wait, no, don't you try to walk!” Lance rolled his eyes.
“I can walk! I'm not crippled! Just a little sick...”
“You're sick. Therefore you shouldn't try to exert yourself”, JC explained. “I can carry you.”
“Okay”, Lance heaved a sigh and plopped down on the chair again. JC bent down and picked him up by putting his arms under his knees and around his back. He held the blond boy as close as possible without putting him in any discomfort and was a bit shocked about how light he was. Nevertheless he loved holding him so close.
“This is nice”, he mumbled. Despite his concern about the boy in his arms he smiled a bit when he heard Lance murmur a dazed “Mmmhmm...”
“Okay, now I know you're delirious”, JC said.
“No I'm not”, Lance moaned. “I'm fine...”
“That's why you're cuddling up to me, right?” JC stated.
“Mmhmm”, was all Lance answered as he put his arms around JC’s neck, closed his eyes and nuzzled his face into JC’s shoulder.
“Shit.” JC whispered and made a decision. “I'm calling an ambulance.” He tried to pick his cell phone from his pocket without having to put Lance down again, and only succeeded by sitting down on the chair together with Lance. Lance protested.
“No! Just put me in bed! I'll be okay. Just let me get some sleep, and I'll be fine in the morning.”
“Lance”, JC answered calmly. “You're over here *purring* cause I'm holding you. You're delirious.” There was a moment of silence, then Lance opened one eye and asked
“Is it a good thing when your body hurts?” JC softly pushed back some sweaty hair from Lance’s forehead.
“No, babe, it's not.” Defeatedly, Lance closed the eye again.
“Oh. Just wondering.” He shivered, and JC quickly dialed a number on his cell phone.
“Um, J, babe, this is Jace”, he spoke into the phone when someone on the other end of the line picked up. “I'm about to take Lance to the hospital.” He listened for a few moments to what Justin had to say to this, then he hung up abruptly.
“Prick.” He muttered.
“Why?”
JC looked at Lance. “What?”
“Why prick?” Lance wanted to know.
“Who? Justin? It's nothing.” JC brushed off.
“Oh...okay “ Lance shivered again. “Listen...why don't you just put me in the bed, where I can get warm...” JC watched him for a while, then he dialed again and brought the cell phone to his ear.
“Um, I need an ambulance”, he told the operator who picked up. In the next few minutes he told the symptoms Lance had and the address of their hotel, and listened to what the women on the other end of the line had to say, before he hung up and put the phone back into his pocket. Lance shifted uncomfortably, what caused his hipbone to press into JC’s groin. JC hissed quietly.
“Lance, could you be still? - What's wrong?”
“Sorry”, Lance replied. “I just hurt... hurts all over...” JC shifted him a bit, so that Lance could lay back in his arms comfortably.
“Bed...”, Lance mumbled weakly, and his blue eyes friend gently ran his hand through his blond hair.
“Shh, babe, it's alright”, he soothed. “The ambulance will be here soon.”
“Tired”, Lance whispered. JC watched him with a loving and a worried eye ancidecided to call Lonnie to tell him that he should let the paramedics in when they arrived. When he hung up, Lance offered him a weak smile.
“I think my temp has gone up or something, I guess I am sick...” JC leaned down and kissed his forehead.
“It's going to be just fine, baby.”, he tried to calm not only Lance, but also himself. Lance continued to smile weakly.
“I like that...”, he whispered.
“Like what?”
“What you were just doing...” Lance answered.
“What, you mean kissing your forehead?” When Lance nodded and said “Yeah... that's really nice”, JC leaned down and kissed him again, very softly.
“If only Justin still thought that”, he said quietly, more to himself than to Lance, who had his eyes closed and a weak, but happy smile on his face.
“God, I wish I could be with you...”, he continued as sirens could be heard in the background.
“Then break it off with him”, Lance said as softly, causing JC to go pale and nearly drop him.
“What? “
“If you don't want to be with him anymore, then break it off.” Lance repeated.
“I...who?” JC stuttered.
“Justin”, was Lance’s weak reply.
“Lance, how do you...” JC was interrupted by his sick friend.
“I'm not blind. And they don't call me scoop for nothing.” A shiver ran through his body the same moment when two paramedics came into the room and took Lance out from JC’s arms. JC sat stock still for a few seconds, then he stood up and followed the paramedics numbly.
*At the hospital*
Lance was laying in his hospital bed when JC entered the room. An IV was dripping into the arm of the sleeping boy, and JC smiled a bit at the sight of Lance.
“Oh, baby”, he whispered. “You look so angelic like that... My beautiful little slice of heaven...” He didn’t notice that Lance stirred slightly and walked over to the side of the bed. He sat down on the edge of the bed and touched Lance’s face softly.
“I was so worried about you...” He shut his mouth when Lance slowly opened his eyes.
“Josh?” He asked hoarsely.
“Hey, there, handsome”, JC replied gently. Lance smiled weakly.
“Where?”
“Right here lying in front of me”, JC replied and tried to avoid looking at the needle in Lance’s hand. He was afraid of needles; just looking at them made him sick.
“Where am I?” Lance wanted to know.
“In the hospital, babe.” Lance swallowed.
“Oh...why?” JC looked at him curiously.
“You were sick....you don't remember?” Lance frowned slightly.
“Sorta... I remember being cold, and reading a book....” JC felt his heart falling to the pit of his stomach. Had Lance forget everything he’d said?
“Nothing else?” He asked in a small voice.
“And I sorta remember you taking my temp, and picking me up and holding me”, Lance continued, smiling. JC bit his lip in hope.
“Anything else?” Lance shook his head.
“Sorry...I just remember you talking to me while you were holding me, and I remember I liked that a whole lot...” JC felt tears well up in his eyes and moved his hand to pick at the comforter with his fingers, his eyes on his hands.
“Um, yeah, I did too...”, he stuttered.
“I'm sorry I can't remember”, Lance said weakly, and JC shrugged.
“It's...it's okay.” Lance shook his head slightly and looked at the brunette singer with worry.
“No...it's not. You're about to break down into tears because I can't remember what happened!”
“I'm fine, ba- Lance.” JC noticed his second slip early enough. Lance didn’t believe him and struggled to try and sit up.
“No...tell me what's wrong!” He demanded.
“No, no, don't get all agitated. It's nothing, I promise”, JC soothed him, and Lance tiredly fell back into the pillow.
“Fine...I'll let it go. But once I'm out of here, I'm not going to let you get away.” He closed his eyes and therefore couldn’t see JC tear up again.
“I'm so tired...”, he murmured, and JC took his free hand.
“Go to sleep, baby, I'm not going anywhere.”
“You aren't?” Lance tiredly asked.
“No, never”, was JC’s answer.
“Why not?”, Lance wanted to know, yawning. JC’s answer was simple.
“Because I love you.” Lance smiled weakly and squeezed his hand.
“You do?”
“Yeah, I do... Does that bother you?” Lance shook his head and looked into the other boy’s eyes.
“Not at all.” JC was relieved.
“Good.”
“What about Justin though?” was Lance’s next question.
“What about him?” JC asked back.
“Aren't you still with him?” JC softly caressed Lance’s hand with his thumb.
“Not as of about five minutes ago...” Lance’s eyes widened, and he struggled to sit up.
“You did? You...broke up with him?”, he asked surprised. JC put a hand on his chest and softly pushed him back down.
“Don't you dare try to get out of that bed. - Yes, we did.” Lance reached for his hand again, and if JC wasn’t mistaken, a small smile was tugging on his lips.
“But why?”
“We weren't working”, JC stated and smiled at Lance’s simple ”Oh”. Lance closed his eyes, and for the next minute JC simply sat there and took the opportunity to look at him. Suddenly Lance jerked back up, then yawned tiredly.
“Now, go to sleep”, JC said gently.
“I'm not tired....”, Lance replied, and JC grinned.
“Lance, if you're going to lie, at least stop yawning.” Lance looked back at him sheepishly.
“I suppose maybe I am a little tired...” JC shook his head amused.
“You're going to fall asleep on my declaration of love?” He tried to act hurt. Lance yawned once again.
“Would it help if I told you that I loved you too?” JC felt his heart beat faster in his chest, but nevertheless he said “Not while you're droopy and asleep.” Lance’s eyes searched his.
“Like I said earlier, I'll be fine. All I need is a little sleep. I'll be fine in the morning - So when I wake up tomorrow, can I”, he broke up for a moment to yawn, then continued “tell you that I love you?” JC couldn’t believe his luck. Was it possible that the blond haired angel laying in front of him loved him back?
“If you're coherent”, he whispered, and Lance nodded.
“Okay. - Sing me to sleep?” he asked, and JC nodded.
“'This I Promise You'?” Lance smiled weakly.
“Sure. Sounds fine to me.” JC cleared his throat and started to sing, and Lance closed his eyes, a content smile on his face. JC sang the whole song, and when he finished, he noticed that Lance had finally fallen asleep. He stood up and looked down at the younger boy, smiling. A happy feeling spread out in his chest when he thought of his conversation with Lance, and suddenly he was sure about what Lance would say to him when he’d wake up in the morning. He bent down and pressed a soft, long kiss on Lance’s forehead.
“I love you.”
Then he left the room.
