Josh looked down at the sleeping angel in his arms. He looked peaceful and content. He realized that the only time he
ever looked like that anymore was in his sleep. He knew something was wrong; but he couldn’t get him to tell him
what. It started on the last leg of the NSA tour, just before the Christmas break. Now here it was the beginning of
February and it was only getting worse. No one else thought anything wasng ong on. They all told Josh he was over
reacting. He knew better. They had been together as lovers, best friends and soulmates for the last three years; and he
knew something was wrong. The sleeping angel stirred and the peaceful look turned into a frown. Then the tossing and
turning started and he spoke.
“Please stop... don’t touch me... stop taking my picture...no you don’t love me, you don’t even know me...I quit.”
Josh was shaking him now. Willing him to wake up. He finally opened his big eyes and looked at Josh.
“I want to quit. I want a life Josh. I’m so tired of it.”
“What are you tired of?”
“I’m tired of being Justin Timberlake.”
Chapter 1
The next morning Justin carried on as if nothing had happened. This worried Josh more than his confession the night
before. Josh knew Justin well enough to know that he couldn’t force him to talk so he let it go. Justin knotted a towel
around his waist and wiped another over his newly shaved head. He walked over to Josh who was shaving and wrapped
his arms around his lover from behind. Putting his head on Josh’s shoulder he kissed his neck just behind his ear.
“Love you.” Justin said
“Love you too.” Josh told him.
The two dressed and went to the studio. They were staying at Justin’s Orlando home while they were recording. The
Grammy awards were in a couple of weeks and they were taking a week off after the show. Josh was glad hoping the
time off would be good for Justin.
The two entered the studio and noticed Lance was already there.
“Hey guys” Lance said
“Hey scoop.” Josh said
Justin just waved on his way over to the table with breakfast set up on it. A few minutes later the remaining members of
NSYNC showed up along with the producer and the day began. After five hours they took a lunch break. Justin was
starved but didn’t want to deal with the fans outside the studio. He sat on the couch and seemed to be in another world.
“Baby come on. We’re going to go for lunch.” Josh said
“I don’t feel like dealing with the fans today. I’ll just get something from the machine.”
“No. I’ll bring you something back. Ok?”
“Thanks Josh.”
The other four left the studio to get lunch. They all piled into Lance’s truck and headed out. They rode in silence until
Joey couldn’t stand it anymore.
“C what’s wrong with Justin?” Joey asked
“What do you mean?”
“Come on C. You think we haven’t noticed the way he’s been lately. He hardly says anything to us, he looks like he
ha sle slept in days, he avoids people as much as possible. So what is it?” Joey said
“I don’t know Joe. I mean he’s been like this since before Christmas. I told you guys something was wrong but you
didn’t believe me.”
“Has he said anything?” Chris asked
“No not really. Well last night he had a strange dream and he said he was tired of being Justin Timberlake.”
“Tired of being himself? That doesn’t make sense.” Chris said
“I know. Guys I’m really worried about him. I think everything is finally catching up to him.”
“You mean all the publicity and stuff?” Joey asked
“Yeah. I mean he’s under a lot of stress lately. Not to mention things are still a little tense with Lynn.”
“I can’t believe she freaked out. I mean you two getting engaged should not have been a shock. I mean you’ve been
together forever.” Lance said
“I know. She just keeps telling him that he’s too young. That he should wait before he makes that type of commitment.”
“Well I hope Justin feels better soon. I miss my buddy.” Chris said
Two weeks later the guys were on a plane heading for sunny California. They were performing at the awards and had a
few days of rehearsals ahead of them. When they arrived the limo took them to the hotel they were using and once they
had their rooms Justin went straight to sleep. Josh took that opportunity to talk to Joey.
“Hey man, where’s Justin?” Joey asked letting JC in.
“He’s sleeping.”
“So I can tell by your face you need to talk.”
“Yeah. I don’t know what to do. He’s barely himself.” JC said
“I’m sure it’ll get better. Don’t worry.” Joey said trying to reassure his friend.
“I don’t know Joey.”
“Well you know we have the next week off so he’ll get a chance to rest. Maybe he just needs a little break. You know,
recharge himself” Joey offered.
“Joe I feel like I’m losing him. I’ve never felt this kind of distance between us.” JC said
“Try not to freak I’m sure it’ll pass.” Joey said
“I hope so.”
The next morning they woke up for their rehearsal. Justin wasn’t in bed when JC reached for him and that was unusual.
“Justin?” he called out
“Yeah Josh. I’m in here.” He called from the living room.
JC walked into the other room and noticed Justin dressed and ready to go. He walked over and tried to kiss him but
Justin turned away. He only med ted to kiss his cheek.
“Are you ok Justin?” JC asked
He didn’t say anything only shook his head. JC left the room to get dressed. They met up with their friends and headed
to the arena. Justin barely said good morning to the guys. He seemed to be lost in his own thoughts. They finally made
it to their destination and the crowds lining the performer entrance to the staples center was loud. As soon as Justin
exited the limo the shouts for pictures and autographs began. Josh noticed the tense set of Justin’s muscles as he put on
the patented smile andetedeted the fans. The five entered the center and were shown to the dressing room they would use
for the show. Rehearsal went well, but Josh could sense Justin was more distracted than usual.
When they arrived back at the hotel Justin went to his room without a word to anyone. Each of his band mates
exchanged looks of concern.
“C I’m worried man. J hasn’t really said much that wasn’t work related all day.” lance said
“I know. He’s not ing ing to me either.” JC said
“What? You two always talk. Even when you’re mad at each other.” Chris said.
JC just nodded his agreement before going to his room. He arrived to find Justin on the bed with his back to the door.
He walked over and touched Justin’s back.
“Could you just leave me alone please?” Justin said shrugging off Josh’s hand.
“Please talk to me. What can I do to help?”
“Nothing. There’s nothing anyone can do. Ok.”
“You don’t mean that Justin. I just want to help.”
“Then leave. me. alone.” he said standing quickly and leaving the room. Slamming the door behind him.
Josh just watched the closed door sagging down to the bed in confusion.
When Justin hadn’t come back to the room a couple hours later Josh became worried. He called Justin’s cell praying he
would answer.
“I’m fine JC!!!” he said
JC flinched at being called by his nickname.
“Are you alone?” the older man asked cautiously
“No. Lonnie’s with me.” Justin answered.
The next thing JC heard was a click as Justin hung up on him.
Later that night JC could hear Joey knocking and calling for him and Justin. JC finally came to the door since it didn’t
look like Joey would stop.
“Yeah Joe, how can I help you?”
“C what’s wrong man?” Joey asked
“Justin’s gone. Has been for a while and when I called he hung up on me. Now he has his phone off and I don’t know
where he is.” he said dissolving into tears.
“Damn Jayce. It’ll be ok.” Joey said pulling his friend into a hug.
“He’s mad at me and I don’t know why.”
“He’s just stressed. He’ll be ok. He always is. You know that.” Joey said.
“This is different Joe. He never blamed me
before.”
JC finally cried himself to sleep. Joey, Chris and Lance waited in the outer living area of Justin and JC’s suite. They
agreed to wait and talk to Justin when he returned.
At four in the morning Justin walked in to be met by his three band mates.
“What are you all doing here?” Justin asked
“Waiting for you. Where the hell have you been? We’ve been worried sick. Especially C.” Chris said.
“Yeah well I’m fine so you can leave. Where is JC any way?” Justin asked
Three mouths dropped at the name. Justin never used the nickname anymore. Not even in interviews.
“What did you say?” lance asked him
“I. Said. Where. Is. JC. Anyway?” he said slowly and with some anger.
“Cried himself to sleep” Joey said.
There was a slight break in Justin’s stony gaze but it was gone just as quickly as it came.
“You can go. I need to get some sleep. We have a long day tomorrow.” Justin said practically pushing his friends out of
the door.
With that the others left and Justin got a pillow and blanket and went to sleep on the couch.
The next morning all of JC’s attempts to talk to Justin were met with silence. He finally gave up. Tension was thick
between the friends, but like the true professionals they are the performance was great. To the outside world they were
still NSYNC. But to the five that couldn’t be further from the truth.
Chapter2
It was the next morning and the beginning of their week long vacation. Justin was still being a jerk but JC was willing to
forgive him that. He walked into the living room of their suite to talk to him.
“Justin are you awake?” JC said walking towards the couch.
“Yes.” Justin answered.
“I called for a car. Are you ready to head home?”
“JC I’m going to go back to Orlando.” Justin said
“What? Justin I don’t understand? What have I done? Ye bee been treating me like shit for the last week. Calling me
JC, I mean what the fuck is going on?”
“I’m sorry. I just have a lot on my mind.” Justin said
“Let me help you. I’m your fiancé for gods sake. I love you.” JC
said
“Don’t you think I know that? But like I keep telling you. You can’t help me. None of you can. I need to work on this
alone. Please try to understand that.” Justin said.
“Justin what are you saying?” JC asked feeling sick to his stomach.
“I just need some time. Just give me this week. Please? I need this time alone to think and sort out my feelings.” Justin
said
“Your feelings about what?”
“About everything. NSYNC, my mom..... you.” Justin said looking down at the
floor.
Josh took in a sharp breath. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing. He didn’t just say that he wasn’t sure of his
feelings for him.
“Me? Are you telling me that you don’t love me anymore or is this because of Lynn?” JC asked.
“Josh, I love you. I’ll always love you. Nothing will ever change that. I just.... I just need some time. I just need to take
care of me for a while.”
JC just nodded his head. He walked over to Justin kissing him. Justin put his hand behind JC’s neck and deepened the
kiss. The kiss was full of everything that until a few weeks ago had been their relationship. Love, trust and security.
When the kiss ended they were both breathless and crying. It felt like a good bye kiss and neither of them could deny
that.
“I love you Justin. Don’t ever doubt that. Ever.” JC said going to the room to get his suitcase. He headed to the elevator
not bothering to look back. He couldn’t because it hurt too much.
Justin pulled himself together and went downstairs to the limo he called to take him to the airport. He was doing the
right thing. He was sure of it. He needed a little time to see if Justin was still there. If there was anything left for
himself. He knew Josh loved him, but that was a part of the problem. Because he loved him, he always took care of him
and before that it was his mother. His mother with whom his present relationship was strained at best. She accepted that
Justin was gay. But when he said that he and Josh had gotten engaged she snapped. She kept telling him he wasn’t old
enough. That he needed to take his time. That maybe there was someone else. He’d told her that Josh was his soul mate
and he didn’t need to wait because he knew he had the right one, but the truth was he missed his mother and the
relationship they had. Then there was NSYNC. It was everything he ever wanted. He got to sing and entertain people but
it was too much. He didn’t have any privacy and everyone wanted something from him. He needed to be alone to decide
if he could just be Justin and not Justin Timberlake. He needed to know that he could take care of himself if he had too.
This was the only way to do it. He just hoped that in the end everyone would understand.
Joey, Lance and Chris had left for their separate destinations before the other two. Joey and Lance were waiting for their
planes. Chris had just taken off.
“Lance, do you think J and C are going to be ok?” Joey asked
“I’m sure they will be. I mean they are like the perfect couple. I just think they need some time away from everything. I
hope.” Lance said.
“I hope it’s enough time.”
“I guess we’ll know when we’re back together in Orlando.” Lance said
“I guess.”
Josh walked into his LA home feeling like a drowning man. He looked at the pictures of he and Justin everywhere. It
felt like his heart was being torn in two. He never thought that they wouldn’t make it, but the kiss they shared that
morning felt like the kiss of death. He dropped his bag by the door and went to the bedroom where he fell to the bed and
began to cry.
When Justin’s plane touched down he was grateful that he managed to get through the airport un-noticed. He hailed a
cab to take him home. When he arrived he felt instant loneliness something he hadn’t expected at all. “This is what you
wanted” he told himself, but now he wasn’t so sure. He walked to the bedroom and un-packed his suitcase. Then he
went out back and sat on the edge of the pool. He went over his plan for the week in his head. He had a lot to think
about and only a week to do it. He wanted to have control of his life again by the end of the short break. He heard the
phone ring and decided not to answer. The machine picked up.
“This is Justin. If it’s important leave a message.” the machine played
“Justin it’s me Josh. I was just calling to see if you made it home safely. I didn’t know what time your flight was. Just
call when you get in so I know you arrived. I love you.”
Justin could hear the pain and the tears in Josh’s voice and he knew he was responsible for them. He picked up the
phone to call him.
Josh reached for the phone hoping it was Justin.
“Hello.”
“Hi Josh. It’s me. I made in ok.”
“Good. Thanks for calling me back.” JC said
“I didn’t want you to worry.” Justin said
“Too late for that.” JC said quietly
“I’m sorry Josh, I need to go. I’ll see you
next week.” Justin said hanging up quickly.
Justin spent the rest of the evening planing his visit with his mother. He’d already called and told her he wanted to talk
and she agreed to meet with him. He was praying it didn’t turn into another fight where he had to defend his love for
Josh. He and his mother had always been so close. She supported everything he ever did until he told her that he and
Josh were engaged. She had been loving to Josh, treating him like another son until that day. After that she was cold and
hardly spoke to him. It had gotten so bad that Josh would stay home whenever Justin was going to visit her. Justin hated
this because he wanted the two most important people in his life to get along. He hoped against hope that tomorrow he
would at least be able to fix that relationship.
The morning sun greeted JC who simply rolled over and put a pillow over his head. Getting up was not an option. He
just wanted toy sly sleep and dream because when he was asleep Justin was with him and not on the other side of the
country. When that thought hit him the tears began anew and the day started just the way the last one ended.
Justin rang his mothers doorbell and waited for her to answer. When she did she smiled to see her son.
“Hi son.” she said
“Hi mom.” he replied kissing her on the cheek as he entered the house.
After they were seated and silence was thick around them he cleared his throat to speak.
“Mom I need to talk to you about our relationship.” he said
“What about it?” she asked
“I need to know what happened to it. We were always so close and you always supported me but lately it’s been
different.” he said
“Justin I don’t know what you want me to say.”
“I want you to tell me why we’ve drifted apart. I need to know. I’ve tried to understand but I can’t.” he said
“Justin, I
don’t know what you want. I’ve told you how I feed thd that’s that.”
“Why do you feel like that? I mean you treated Josh like a son and when we told you about the engagement you did a
complete three sixty.” Justin said
“I don’t think you’re ready for marriage. I think you’re too young and I think it’s a mistake. You’ve never even dated
anyone else. How can you be so sure that Josh is the man you want to spend the rest of your life with. I don’t want you
rushing into anything” she said
“I love him shouldn’t that be enough. What difference does it make that I never dated anyone else?” Justin said
“All the difference. Sweetie, when you were fourteen and you told me you were gay I was shocked, I never saw it
coming but I accepted it. When you turned seventeen and told me that you and Josh were together I accepted it because I
knew that you liked him. I just feel like Josh has taken advantage of your trust and love. He knew you would never turn
down his proposal even if it was too soon. I feel like he asked you because he was afraid that if he didn’t you would
find someone else. I think he’s afraid of losing you so to make sure he didn’t he asked you to marry him.” she said
“That’s not why. He loves me. He’s always there for me and he takes care of me when I need it. How can you say he
only asked to trap meustiustin said
“I don’t doubt that he loves you or that you love him. I just think that he’s older and he’s had a chance to explore other
relationships. I think he was afraid that you might want to do the same. He didn’t want to take a chance that you would
find someone else. Where is he anyway?” she asked
“He’s home in LA.” Justin said
“Why isn’t he here with you?” she asked
“Because I needed some time alone.” Justin said
“Maybe it’s because you need time away from him. If you were so
sure the two of you belong together wouldn’t you be with him now. All I ask is that you think about what I’ve said. I
still love you Justin and I always will. I promise to try harder.” she said
“Thank you.” he said leaving.
The drive home seemed endless. The talk had only served to confuse him more. He knew that he and his mother would
be better and he also knew she still didn’t accept his engagement any better. Maybe she was right, he should see other
people; or at the very least be free to think about it.
