Part 1
Justin and his best friend Lance were unpacking. They had just arrived on campus and were set to start their lives away from home and parents. It was August and the Florida sun was shining brightly outside.
“Come on Lance lets go outside and enjoy the sun” Justin said
“Not now. Let’s get unpacked first.”
“You’re no fun.”
“I know you hate doing the practical thing Justin, but trust me. Let’s get unpacked and then we’ll walk around town. We still have to get jobs. I mean if we want to get an apartment off campus that is.”
“I know. The money I saved from working before is nearly all gone. Maybe while we’re out we’ll find some place thats hiring.”
“Maybe so. Are you going to try being a waiter again?”
“I guess. I did make great tips. What about you?”
“I don’t know. We shouheckheck that board with jobs we saw downstairs. What do you think?”
“You’re so smart. I want to be just like you when I grow up.”
“Very funny Justin.”
The two friends finished unpacking and then went to check the job board. They each found a couple of things that grabbed their attention. Lance was excited to see that a local record company was hiring for interns. He really wanted to get involved in music and so he was hoping he could get on. He knew he was basically going to be a gofer but it didn’t bother him. It was a start. Justin found tons of listings for restaurants looking for wait staff. Since it was Saturday they decided that Monday after class they would go and apply. They headed to the parking lot to start their exploring.
“My car or yours?” Justin asked
“Yours is fine.”
“Of course. I always have to drive. Do you have the map in case we get lost?”
“Yeah. I have it.”
“Ok lets go.”
The two friends spent the next few hours driving around. They saw lots of clubs they wanted to visit as well as found the places they were going to apply for jobs. One of the restaurants on Justin’s list was called Fatone’s. When they drove by there was a line of people waiting to get in. Justin noticed this and knew he could make a killing in tips if he could get hired there.

Joseph Fatone was in the kitchen of his family’s restaurant. He was busy with several meals going at once. When he decided to become a chef he had no idea it would be this hard. It didn’t matter he loved it anyway.
“Hey Joey I have two number four specials. Extra cheese on one.” Britney said
“Coming right up. Is it real busy tonight?” he asked
“You know it. We’re going to have to turn folks away again tonight if we want to close at midnight. I gotta go.”
“Talk to you later.”
The orders kept coming at a fast pace until they locked up. It was after one before the last customer left for the night. Joey and his brother Steve were cleaning the kitchen when Nick, one of the waiters came in.
“What’s up Nick?” Steve asked
“Not much. I hope you guys get a new waiter in here soon. It’s too hard with just me, Britney and Christina here. If you could it might be a good idea to get two.” Nick said
“Stop complaining. I know you’re making killer tips.” Joey said
“That is not the point.”
“Yeah. Whatever.” Joey said
“I’ll see you two tomorrow.” Nick said leaving
“I’m leaving too Steve. I’m sure you can finish this up.” Joey said
“What, do you have a date or something?” Steve asked his younger brother
“No. You know I’m not trying to date right now.”
“Joe, when are you going to get back into life? It’s been over a year since Michael died.”
“I know how long it’s been. I don’t need you to tell me. I’m going.”
“I’m sorry bro, I just don’t want you to miss out on everything. You’re still young and you have your whole life ahead of you.”
“Well maybe my life died with Michael.” Joey said as he walked to his car.
*************************
Lance and Justin returned to their dorm room well after midnight. They had managed to see a lot of Orlando in their trip. They entered the room and fell to their beds.
“So J, what do you think of the city?” Lance asked
“I like it. It’s different from home.”
“I guess. So where do you think the gay population hangs out?”
“Why do you care?”
“I was thinking that it’s time for you to find yourself a new man. You know they aren’t all the same.”
“I know. I think I’m ready tI juI just want it to be someone who’s not in the closet and afraid of what others will think because he loves another man. What about you?”
“What about me? You know I’ll find some nice girl or guy to hang out with, but I’m not really looking for a lifetime commitment like you are.”
“I guess. So what do you want to do tomorrow?”
“I’m going to hit the net and see where there are some good clubs. We are going to party tomorrow.”
“Tomorrow is Sunday Lance.”
“I don’t care. So rest up.”
“Ok. I’m going to shower.”
While Justin was gone Lance found a couple of places for them to check out. He wanted Justin to find someone and they may as well get started on that.
*************************
The next morning Joey was awakened by his phone ringing.
“Hello” he said
“Wake up sleepy head. It’s like one in the afternoon.” Josh said.
“What do you want man?”
“We’re going out tonight. So be ready to go at nine.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Hello. It’s my birthday you moron.”
“I know. Happy Birthday by the way. So where are you dragging me out to this time?”
“I was thinking we could go to Rainbow’s End.”
“Ok, if you want to. I’ll see you at nine. Bye”
Joey turned to put the phone on the bed side table. He took a quick look of the photo siting there. He let a weak smile cross his lips before he went to the shower. He just hoped he wouldn’t be too bad of company for Josh. He didn’t want to ruin his birthday.
*************************
Justin rolled over and noticed the clock read one thirty. He noticed Lance wasn’t in bed but instead was at his computer desk.
“What are you doing Lance?”
“I’m finishing my resume. You know I might need it for when I apply for the job.”
“Oh. So what are we doing tonight? Have you decided?”
“Yeah. We’re going to a new club. It’s called Rainbow’s End. So you can do whatever until then. We’ll leave about nine.”
“Ok.” Justin said.
He got out of bed and found some clothes to put on. As he got dressed he couldn’t help but think that maybe tonight he would find someone new. He, unlike Lance wanted someone he could have a long term relationship with. That was very important to him and he had a feeling that tonight just might be the night.
